Fujifilm comes out with its latest 10-megapixel FinePix Z30 Fujifilm has announced its new 10-megapixel FinePix Z30. The exclusive features include fairly basic ultracompact camera with a 3X optical zoom and 2.7-inch LCD.

There are some other features too which makes it quite different from other youth-oriented models.

Apart from having face detection and automatic scene recognition to help with fast shooting, the camera also has a Blog Mode (a carryover from the Z20fd) that apparently preps shots and video so they can go right online for sharing.

The users don’t even need to switch to a different mode, since there are separate buttons for the still photo shutter release and movie record. Furthermore, they can also stitch small movie clips together in camera to create a single, 60-second clip.

The device is available in three colors of pink, orange, and black and the users would be able to pick one for $179.95 in March.

Israeli airstrike kills Palestinian near northern Gaza border

Israeli airstrike kills Palestinian near northern Gaza border Gaza City – Palestinian medical staff said Monday that the Israeli military killed a Palestinian youth in the northern Gaza Strip.

They said they picked up the body of Khaled al-Kafarana, 22, from an area near the border between Israel and the northern Gaza Strip town of Beit Hanoun.

Al-Kafarana was killed by a missile fired by an Israeli helicopter overnight, as he apparently tried to infiltrate into Israeli territory.

Israeli aircraft also struck a police station of the Hamas administration in the southern Gaza town of Khan Younis.

The two overnight airstrikes came after the firing of some rockets by Palestinian militants from Gaza Sunday. A military spokesman in Tel Aviv confirmed both strikes.

The tension comes as regional efforts to broker a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel have accelerated. However, observers said no truce agreement was expected before the Israeli elections due on Tuesday. (dpa)

Multi-touch patent won by Apple

Multi-touch patent won by Apple It has recently been learnt that the American patent (number 7,479,949) for touch-screen control technology has been won by Apple. This will definitely mean some serious competition to its rivals while the users should prepare to get ready for cool surprises.

The Patent 7,479,949 has been awarded to Jobs et al and apparently, it will give Apple credit for detecting one or more finger contacts with the touch screen display.

Furthermore, the long-winded patent is also being claimed to the command system of iPhone and iPod, including finger or thumb swiping or twisting and spreading to enlarge pictures or rotate them.

It must be noted here that on 20th January, when the patent was issued; was just a day before the firm gloated over its seemingly recession-proof growing quarterly profits.

Tim Cook, the firm’s chief operating officer reported, “Apple can now legally stamp on any rival which tries to use its precious intellectual property without prior consent and lots of money changing hands. Not that Apple would want to crush its competition, oh no.”

Acer Aspire 10-inch to be out soon

Acer Aspire 10-inch to be out soonAcer’s most popular netbook, the 8-inch Aspire one, has been launched. However, as they say, every rose has a thorn, this incredibly small netbook too has some flaws. For starters, many feel that an 8-inch screen would apparently be too small and they expect a netbook with at least 10-inch screen.

But it would be really nice to know that soon Acer would come out with 10-inch version of the same model. Though there has been no word on pricing or availability, it has been learnt that the machines with 10-inches screen will run on the Intel Atom N280/N270.

Some of the features of the yet to come Aspire one with 10-inch screen includes 1GB of RAM, 160GB HDD, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, optional 3G connectivity, multi-touch track pad, Windows XP and a SDHC card reader.

Eleven Bolivians die after being intoxicated with pesticides

La Paz  – Eleven people died in southwestern Bolivia while they slept at a rural lodge that was also being used as a pesticide deposit, police said Tuesday in the Bolivian province of Chuquisaca.

The dead – including one boy and three women – were peasants from the Japo K’asa, some 720 kilometres southwest of La Paz, who had opted to sleep there en route to Sucre. They were carrying agricultural produce from the Nor Cinti valley to market.

The lodge held bottles of chemicals that are used as pesticides.

“Apparently a child took the lid off one of the bottles and the pesticide spread little by little around the place, killing the 11 people in their sleep, including the boy,” San Lucas local official Jorge Penaranda told the La Paz daily La Razon. (dpa)

Gov’t to take 25 per cent stake in Germany’s Commerzbank

Gov't to take 25 per cent stake in Germany's Commerzbank Berlin – The German government will take a 25 per cent cent stake plus one share in the country’s second biggest bank, Commerzbank, the bank announced Thursday.

Commerzbank said the move is in return for a fresh injection of capital by the state rescue fund Soffin, amounting to 10 billion euros (13.56 billion dollars).

Commerzbank, which is poised to take over rival Dresdner Bank at the end of January, has already received 8.2 billion euros in capital and guarantees of 15 billion euros from Soffin.

Analysts said Commerzbank was apparently in need of the extra cash because of higher-than-anticipated write-offs by Dresdner, which is owned by insurance giant Allianz.

Earlier Thursday, Commerzbank became the first German lender to issue a bond backed by state guarantees. The bank set the size of the bond at 5 billion euros. (dpa)

‘Too fat’ supermodel Karolina Kurkova suffering from thyroid disorder?

Washington, Jan 9 (ANI): Victoria’s Secret supermodel Karolina Kurkova has received a lot of criticism for her fuller-than-usual figure over recent months. But if rumours are to be believed, she is suffering from hyperthyroidism, a thyroid disorder that can slow down the body’s metabolism.

The 24-year-old was blasted by the Brazilian media for her “cellulite and love handles” after walking in Sao Paulo Fashion Week in June, and was then harshly dubbed “too fat” by fashion critics following the lavish lingerie show in November, reports Fox News.

The Czech-born beauty went on a crash diet, cutting out all carbs and working out for hours in preparation for last November’s Victoria Secret lingerie show in Miami.

However, a pal said, “She was exhausted and didn’t get down to where she wanted to be.”

Apparently, her weight woes may have more to do with the medical condition, hyperthyroidism, than with just a lack of willpower. (ANI)

Israeli’s use phone, SMS to warn Gazans of bombs

Tel Aviv – The Israeli Army has launched “roof knocking” operations by which the occupants of the buildings in Gaza they about to bomb are warned beforehand, Israeli media reports said Friday. Warnings, issued by telephone, voicemail or SMS, were intended as a means of limiting civilian casualties in the conflict, the Haaretz newspaper said. Civilians were given 10 minutes to leave the premises. An Israeli Army spokesman declined to confirm the reports or respond to questions about such tactics being used in its ongoing confrontation with Palestinian militants. “In some cases advance warnings are given to reduce the number of victims,” he said. The Israeli Army apparently used “roof knocking” in its killing of senior Hamas official Nizar Rayan on Thursday, Haaretz reported. His family had received warning that the building was about to be attacked, but they had decided to remain inside, the newspaper said. (dpa)

Nine Muslim passengers ordered off US plane, children too

Washington  – Airline officials ordered nine traditionally-dressed Muslims, including three children, off an AirTran flight that was to have left Reagan National Airport in Washington Thursday afternoon, the Washington Post reported.

Two passengers apparently complained to flight staff after overhearing a suspicious remark among the Muslim travellers, the newspaper reported Friday.

All but one of the group were US-born citizens, and they were headed to Orlando, Florida, for a religious retreat. The group included an anaesthesiologist and a lawyer. The children were aged seven, four and two.

Airport officials later cleared the group to travel and FBI agents saw the incident as a misunderstanding, an airport official told the Post. An AirTran spokesman agreed, but added that its pilot had acted properly.

Kashif Irfan, one of the Muslim passengers, told the Post that the problem unfolded after his brother, Atif, and the brother’s wife discussed the safest place to sit on an airplane. The brother apparently looked out the window and saw the jet engines next to his window.

Fellow passengers apparently felt threatened and complained to the pilot, and two federal air marshals on board then reported the matter to airport police.

AirTran spokesman Tad Hutcheson agreed that the incident amounted to a misunderstanding but said the incident had been handled properly.

“At the end of the day, people got on and made comments they shouldn’t have made on the airplane, and other people heard them,” Hutcheson was quoted as saying. “It just so happened these people were of Muslim faith and appearance. It escalated, it got out of hand and everyone took precautions.” (dpa)
