Akmal threatens to sue coaches over match-fixing allegations

Pakistan wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal has threatened to sue the team’s former coaches Intikhab Alam and Aaquib Javed if they don’t apologise for suggesting that he was involved in match-fixing during the disastrous tour of Australia.

Akmal said he wanted a public apology from Intikhab and Aaqib for raising suspicions about his performance on the tour earlier this year.

“I want an apology from them or else they should substantiate their claims that I deliberately left a run-out in the Sydney test. They must come up with evidence that I am linked with bookmakers,” Kamran said.

The wicketkeeper-batsman made it clear that he was fed up trying to explain that he was not involved in match-fixing.

“I go out everyday and they are people passing comments on me. My family is deeply disturbed with these fresh allegations,” he said.

Intikhab and Aaqib told a Pakistan Cricket Board inquiry committee that they had their suspicions about the performances of Kamran and all-rounder Rana Naved in Australia.

They specifically expressed suspicions about the performance of Kamran in the second Test in the lost Sydney during which the keeper dropped four catches and missed an easy run-out.

The video recordings of the former coaches caused an uproar and reignited the match-fixing issue and the ICC also stated it was examining Pakistan’s dismal tour of Australia this year when they were whitewashed in the Test and one-day series.

Though PCB Chairman Ijaz Butt has made it clear that the inquiry into the Australian tour is a closed chapter and they found no evidence of match-fixing, Kamran who left on Saturday for a film shoot in London said he wanted an apology.

“If they don’t apologise or don’t substantiate their allegations I will go to court. I wanted to go to court earlier also against a media outlet but the PCB persuaded me against do so,” he said.

“But this time since both Intikhab and Aaqib are PCB employees, when I return I will talk to the board Chairman about my intentions,” he added.

Kamran said that he was surprised at the statements of both the former coaches.

“They remained coaches since last year and if they had suspicions about my performance in Sydney why did they pick me for the one-day series that followed,” he stated.

Springborg apologises to Queensland Parliament

Queensland Deputy Opposition leader Lawrence Springborg has apologised for trying to release documents from a parliamentary committee.

Late last year, he aired claims against the Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC) using details from the Parliamentary Crime and Misconduct Committee.

The Privileges Committee found no contempt but asked Mr Springborg to say sorry.

“Thank you very much Mr Speaker, I refer to the report number 104 of the integrity, ethics and parliamentary privileges committee in relation to unauthorised tabling of committee documents in the legislative assembly,” he said in Queensland Parliament.

“I thank the committee for their deliberations and their findings and apologise unreservedly.”

Former MP Cleary to pay $630k for defamation

Former federal independent MP Phil Cleary has been ordered to pay $630,000 in damages after a jury found that he defamed a barrister in one of his books.

Dyson Hore-Lacy, SC, sued Cleary for defamation over comments in Getting Away With Murder, a book about the killing of Julie Ramage by her husband in July 2003.

Mr Hore-Lacy claimed his reputation was injured by the book, which implied he was guilty of a criminal offence and professional misconduct by concocting a defence of provocation for James Ramage.

Ramage was cleared of his wife’s murder but found guilty of manslaughter.

A jury of five women found the book had defamed Mr Hore-Lacy and ordered Cleary to pay damages.

Outside court, Mr Hore-Lacy said Cleary had previously refused to settle the matter.

“I think we can say now we made a formal offer of $50,000 to settle it four or five years ago. All I was interested in was an apology and a retraction,” he said.

But Cleary said he was fighting for free speech.

“My evidence was simple. I said I didn’t believe I had done anything wrong. I couldn’t apologise in all faith for something that I didn’t believe was wrong,” he said.

“I didn’t believe that the words should be explained or described or defined in the way that they have been.”

MIC chief to apologise to Dr Mahathir over ‘slipper garland’ insult

Kuala Lumpur, Sep 18 (ANI): Malaysian Indian Congress president S. Samy Vellu has said that he will personally apologise to former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad over the ‘slipper garland’ insult by a MIC member during the recent party congress.

He said he would seek an appointment with Dr Mahathir to tender his apology over the incident.

“I will meet him personally to explain the whole episode and extend my apology,” Samy Vellu said in a statement on Thursday.

The MIC chief said he and the MIC regretted the incident. “I have always had the highest respect for Tun Dr Mahathir. He is a great leader and a statesman.”

He said Dr Mahathir had brought tremendous development to the country and had united the people. “He will always be respected by us and all Malaysians,” The Star quoted Vellu, as saying.

Meanwhile, Dr Mahathir said he did not feel anything about the incident and added: “Nothing would have happened to me.”

Instead, he said he would have felt angry and saddened if Umno members had made such an insult.

“This is not the first time I have been insulted. People might have forgotten how Umno leaders had insulted me. Nazri (Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nazri Abdul Aziz) and the previous mentri besar of Kedah wanted me expelled from Umno.

However, then no one gave any reaction. No one dared to say anything,” he said. (ANI)

Wilson apologises for calling Obama ‘a liar’

Washington, Sep 10 (ANI): South Carolina Republican Joe Wilson has apologized for heckling and calling President Barack Obama ‘a liar’.

“This evening I let my emotions get the best of me when listening to the President’s remarks regarding the coverage of illegal immigrants in the Health Care Bill. While I disagree with the President’s statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the President for this lack of civility,” Politico quoted Wilson, as saying.

The comment from Wilson could be heard throughout the House chamber in response to Obama’s remark that his health insurance plan would not extend benefits to illegal immigrants.

“I’ve never seen anything like that before. We do not invite the president of the United States into the House of Representatives and hurl insults,” said Republican Earl Pomeroy.

According to Wilson’s office, he called the White House after the speech to apologise to Obama, speaking with Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.

The 62-year-old Wilson, who was elected to the House in 2001, previously found himself in the spotlight for attacking 2004 Democratic presidential nominee John F. Kerry over his 1971 testimony criticizing the Vietnam War. (ANI)

PML-Q supports Jamil Bugti’s decision to register case against Musharraf

Quetta, Aug. 31 (ANI): PML-Q chief Chaudhry Shujaat Husain has said that his party supports Jamil Bugti’s decision to register a case against former president Pervez Musharraf and prime minister Shaukat Aziz for conspiring his father Akbar Bugti’s assassination.

The Daily Times quoted Husain as saying that a fair trial would be conducted against the killers of the Baloch nationalist leader. He added that the PML-Q would not apologise to the Baloch people for the actions his party took while in power.

“The PML-Q made all efforts to negotiate with Akbar Bugti to resolve outstanding issues.

“We had won the confidence of Akbar Bugti to such an extent that he even agreed to nominate Mushahid Hussain as his representative in further dialogue,” Husain said.

The PML-Q chief also urged Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to visit Balochistan to see the plight of Baloch people, and address their grievances.

“The government and all stakeholders will have to work collectively to resolve Balochistan’s issues,” he said. (ANI)

Yousuf needs more time to be back to best in international cricket: Younis Khan

Lahore, Aug. 13 (ANI): Pakistan cricket captain Younis Khan has stepped in support of middle order batsman Mohammad Yousuf, saying he needs time to settle down after staging a comeback following a long lay-off from international cricket.

“He is back in the team and before that he was out of international cricket for quite a while. He just played in the Indian Cricket League and there is a difference between ICL and international cricket. He did not play international cricket for more than a year now and any cricketer staying out of the game for this long would need time to adjust,” Khan said.

Yousuf, who came back in the Pakistan team after the PCB lifted the ban on him which was imposed following his joining the rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL), failed to impress during the just concluded Sri Lanka series.

He hit a gritty century in the first Test match of the three match series at Galle, but looked awfully out of form in the one-day series.

Earlier, taking the responsibility for humiliating defeats both in the Test and One-Day series in Sri Lanka, Khan said he would not succumb to pressure to resign.

“I accept the responsibility of defeat, but will not apologise to anyone nor will I resign as captain because it’s part of the game to lose and win,” Khan said.

Khan, 31, lambasted critics and former Pakistani cricketers who have launched a relentless attack on him for team’s dismal performance during the Lanka series.

“I am trying my level best to lead the team and achieve the best results but some people want me to relinquish the captaincy, which I won’t. Am I not a good captain, or do I lack leadership qualities?” he said. (ANI)

Zardari says he discussed Indus Basin Water Treaty issue with Manmohan Singh

Islamabad, Aug. 9 (ANI): Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari has said that he discussed the issue of the Indus Basin Water Treaty during his first meeting with India Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New York.

Responding to a question about the alleged violation of Indus Basin Water Treaty by India, Zardari said the government was conscious of this very grave issue of water shortage and is taking steps for its conservation.

In 2008, Pakistan’s Indus Commissioner Syed Jamaat Ali Shah had alleged that India was filling the Baglihar Dam in clear violation of the Indus Basin Water Treaty, bringing the inflow in Chenab River down to a historic low of 20,000 cusecs.

According to The Nation, Zardari said that a special assistant to the prime minister on water had been appointed, which reflected the significance the government was attaching to the issue.

He also emphasised on the importance of water conservation and said modern technologies of irrigation should be utilised for conservation of precious water.

On the issue of militancy in Balochistan, Zardari said the government is moving in the right direction to address the problems faced by the people of Balochistan through dialogue and constitutional means.

He admitted that the people of Balochistan had been ignored in the past and the PPP government would like to apologise to them despite the fact that “We were not responsible for the past wrong doings.”

Addressing members of the youth parliament, Zardari said that Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani had raised the issue of foreign interference in Balochistan with his Indian counterpart during their meeting at Sharm El-Sheikh. (ANI)

BSP to Sonia Gandhi: Apologise to Mayawati in Parliament for Joshi slur

Lucknow, July 16 (ANI): The controversial arrest of Uttar Pradesh Congress unit chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi over her objectionable remarks on State Chief Minister Mayawati has taken the shape of a major political clash with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)-led State government here.

BSP State chief Satish Mishra on Thursday demanded that Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi apologise in the Lok Sabha for Joshi’s remarks against Mayawati.

Bahuguna’s house was set ablaze and some property at the premises was targeted by some unidentified hooligans here on Thursday.

The Congress party blamed BSP workers for the arson act.

Reacting to the incident, Congress party spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi said: “It’s a state-sponsored vandalism, hooliganism. We are certainly going to take a serious note of it and all possible legal recourse available to us.”

BSP leaders, however, claimed that Congress workers had set fire to Joshi’s house.

“Our workers did not torch Rita’s house. It was rather Congress workers who set it ablaze,” said Mishra.

State police later claimed to have detained four persons in connection with the incident.

Meanwhile, police prevented the burning of an effigy of Mayawati today. They also baton and cane-charged Congress workers and detained about a hundred of them while they staged a street demonstration against Congress leader Joshi’s arrest.

Police arrested Joshi on Thursday and a local court sent her to 14-day judicial remand for making remarks on Wednesday against the CM in an issue related to rape and murder of some Dalit girls in the UP.

The Samajwadi Party, the main opposition party in Uttar Pradesh State Assembly, blamed the police and offered the Congress party any proposal to carry out a joint protest against the state of affairs in Uttar Pradesh. They criticised the police for acting at the behest of State Government.

“Police are working on the directions of Mayawati Government,” said Akhilesh Yadav, Samajwadi Party’s U.P unit chief.

Bharatiya Janata Party leader Maneka Gandhi demanded the dismissal of the Uttar Pradesh government.

“Time has come for dismissal of the UP Government. In my constituency, about 50 political workers are detained every week. I have never seen a situation like this in India ever,” said Maneka Gandhi.

Joshi was arrested in Ghaziabad en route to New Delhi. She was charged under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989, for allegedly making derogatory remarks about Mayawati.

Joshi, however, has denied having said anything to offend Mayawati or Dalits.

“It was at a meeting in Moradabad that I had simply sought to draw the people’s attention to the fact that Mayawati’s dole of Rs.25,000 to every Dalit rape victim was quite ironical as the state police chief was spending lakhs on the helicopter ride that he undertakes to hand over that paltry amount to the victim,” Joshi told media persons. L A Galaxy’s Donovan refuses to apologise to Beckham

Los Angeles (US), July 10 (ANI): L A Galaxy skipper Landon Donovan has said that he will not apologise to David Beckham, as the England star’s commitment to the club has been questionable.

The two men meet today when Becks reports for training, The Sun said.

In a book called ‘The Beckham Experiment’, Donovan accused the midfielder of not giving his all both on and off the field.

And last night the LA Galaxy skipper insisted: “I won’t apologise.

“What I feel bad about is that I should have told David as opposed to telling a reporter.” (ANI)

‘I was an idiot for Hitler comments’, says Bernie Ecclestone

London, July 9 (ANI): Formula One head Bernie Ecclestone has for his support of Adolf Hitler’s style of functioning saying he was an “idiot” to discuss Hitler or Saddam Hussein.

Ecclestone apologised through a German tabloid saying: “I’m sorry. I apologise honestly and sincerely, not just superficially.”

“I would never support such people. I should never have been so foolish as to have been drawn into discussing these people but the fault was entirely mine, which I deeply regret,” he added.

Ecclestone had made the remark in an interview published in The Times, in which he also criticised the removal of Saddam Hussein in Iraq, The Telegraph reports.

In another article in The Times, Ecclestone had attempted to clarify his Hitler statement, saying that: “During the 1930s, Germany was facing an economic crisis but Hitler was able to rebuild the economy, building the autobahns and German industry.”

“That was all I meant when I referred to him getting things done. I’m an admirer of good leadership, of politicians who stand by their convictions and tell the voters the truth. I’m not an admirer of dictators, who rule by terror,” he added. (ANI)

I’m ready to own responsibility for Babri mosque demolition: Uma Bharti

Bhopal, June 30 (ANI): Former Bharatiya Janata Party leader Uma Bharti on Tuesday volunteered to own responsibility for the demolition of Babri mosque at Ayodhya and said that she would have no problem even if she was hanged on the issue.

Reacting to the submission of the Liberhan Commission report on the demolition of the mosque, Uma Bharti said: “Like a good commander, I am ready to own the responsibility of the Babri masjid’s demolition and I have no problem even if I will be hanged on the issue.”

“The report, which has been submitted to the Prime Minister after 17 years of the constitution of the Commission, is an attempt to appease Muslim community,” Bharati alleged.

“The UPA government led by Congress was unable to find a single person responsible for the massacre of 20,000 Sikhs at the behest of Congress after the death of the former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. By doing so they deliberately wanted to term us culprits with an intention to divide Hindus and Muslims for political gains,” Uma alleged.

Uma, however, appealed to the BJP leaders not to apologise for the demolition of Babri mosque as they themselves invited large number of people at Ayodhya for starting the ‘Karseva’. (ANI)

‘I’m no alcoholic, says Symonds

Brisbane (Australia), June 29 (ANI): Sacked Australian cricketer Andrew Symonds has denied that he is an alcoholic, but admitted to being a binge drinker.

In an interview on Nine Network’s Sixty Minutes last night, Symonds said: “I am not an alcoholic, I have been diagnosed as a binge drinker. I go out and drink hard all in one hit. Too fast, too much.

Everyone’s tolerance is different. I became not good to be around.

“I have let them (team-mates) down a number of times. I had to front up and apologise to them a number of times. They were embarrassing, difficult awkward situations. It is not ideal. I am not saying I am perfect but I am not setting out looking for trouble,” news.com.au quoted Symonds, as saying.

“I am not proud of the times I have drunk too much or been rude to people or broken team rules – it’s unacceptable. I am out of that environment and that won’t happen any more for those people,” he added.

Symonds wayward disciplinary record saw him sent home from the Twenty20 World Cup in England. Cricket Australia subsequently withdrew a new contract and Symonds international career is now considered over.

Symonds confirmed he had several drinks while watching the first State of Origin match while in England and thus broke the contract.

Symonds admitted the pressure of stardom thrust upon him in recent seasons and the stresses of a race row in which he was taunted by Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh had worn him down. (ANI)

Scottish Muslim rights lawyer charges UK with ‘criminalising minority groups’

Glasgow (Scotland), June 28 (ANI): A Scottish human rights lawyer Aamer Anwar has charged the British Government with criminalizing minority communities.

Speaking at the Ethnic Minority Achievement Awards here, Anwar said: “The fact that today’s racism takes culture or religion as its raw materials does not make it any less real for its victims. This government has exploited the politics of fear by bringing in tougher anti-terror laws, cracking down on asylum-seekers. The result of stop and search is the criminalisation of entire communities. In many communities, there is a growing climate of fear.”

“I am tired of our government lecturing on how my community has to integrate. I was born and bred in this country and am against violence, and do not have to apologise for each act of terror. I live and work in and walk in the same streets as the next person and am just as likely to be blown up by a terrorist bomb,” Anwar said.(ANI)

What air travellers hate most while flying

Melbourne, June 26 (ANI): A survey of Australian travellers has revealed that dirty toilets, overweight passengers and rude flight attendants are among what the passengers hate the most while flying.

The Travel.com.au survey, which involved over 1700 Australian travellers, revealed flight delays as the top air travel grievance.

Other annoyances included chatterboxes, poor passenger hygiene, and reclining seats.

“The days when airplane food was the biggest bugbear of passengers are obviously gone – it didn’t even score a place in the list,” News.com.au quoted Travel.com.au’s general manager Lisa Ferrari as saying.

“Instead, nowadays it seems the biggest flying frustration comes before passengers have even boarded the plane,” she added.

The report further reveals that lack of information about a delayed flight was found to be the most annoying part for passengers.

“As far as I am concerned they can apologise for a delay all they like, but unless you tell me what’s going on and how long it’s going to take to fix it, I’m gonna (sic) get annoyed,” a survey respondent said.

The fourth most frustrating travel experience, according to air travellers, was to sit next to an overweight passenger who encroached on their own seats.

The findings reinforced the findings of a survey conducted by travel.com.au last year, which found 53 per cent of Australians thought obese people should have to purchase two economy class tickets if they couldn’t fit into one.

“Evidently this remains a contentious issue for Australian travellers,” Ferrari said.

She said that she also agreed with the 48 per cent of respondents who were frustrated by people who reclined their seats all the way back on short flights.

“Given that it can severely cut into your already limited seat space, I’d throw my support behind a decision by the airlines to regulate when you can and can’t recline your seats,” she said

“Extenuating circumstances aside, I’m just not sure it’s necessary on an hour flight,” she added.

Australian Travellers’ top 8 Flying Frustrations

1. Flight delays

2. People putting their seats back during short flights

3. Being trapped in your seat by a sleeping passenger

4. Overweight passengers who encroach on your own seat

5. The poor hygiene of fellow passengers

6. Being stuck next to a passenger who won’t stop talking

7. Dirty toilets

8. Rude flight attendants (ANI)

Perez Hilton apologises to gay right groups over will.i.am outburst

Washington, June 24 (ANI): Homosexual celebrity blogger Perez Hilton has apologised to gay rights organisations for using an anti-gay slur during his recent confrontation with Black Eyed Peas star Will.i.am.

The flamboyant blogger came under fire from leaders of The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) over the way he tackled a row with the hip-hop star.

Hilton alleged that he was left bleeding and in shock when will.i.am attacked him at an afterparty for the MuchMusic Awards in Toronto, Canada.

However, the star responded by insisting that there was no violence, and accused Hilton of branding him a “f**got” as they argued outside a nightclub.

Bosses at GLAAD were angered by Hilton’s choice of words, and said that his comments were “vulgar”.

Although the blogger initially refused to apologise to the organisation, he has now issued a statement reaching out to the gay community in regard to the incident.

“Words can hurt. I know that very well, from both sides of the fence. The other night in Toronto, after feeling physically threatened by a verbally abusive will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas, I chose the most hurtful word I know to hurl at him. I was in an out-of-the ordinary situation and used a word that I would not utter under normal circumstances,” Contactmusic quoted Hilton as saying.

He added: “I wanted to hurt him with the word I chose, not anyone else. Unfortunately, the one who got hurt was me and, subsequently, a lot of other people.” (ANI)

Jordan accuses Peter of selling their kids’ pics

London, May 27 (ANI): Hollywood socialite Jordan has accused her estranged husband Peter Andre on Twitter of selling their kids’ pictures for money.

Jordan referred to photos of Pete playing with Junior, 3, and Princess, 1, after they returned from Maldives, and Twittered: “Mmmm, I smell set-up pictures.”

Peter, on the other hand, is not ready to swallow the accusations sitting back, as he has asked for an apology from his estranged wife.

An infuriated Peter has rebuffed Jordan’s claims, and has been spending time with top divorce lawyer Stephen Foster to hasten the divorce proceedings.

“Pete has been determined to maintain a dignified silence over his private life.

After spending an amazing weekend with his kids, he was hoping his relationship with Katie could get back on more cordial terms. But after discovering she had Twittered, suggesting he had tipped off the media as to his whereabouts with the kids, he went ballistic,” the Mirror quoted a source as saying.

“On the first day he refused even to go outside with them because he did not wish to be seen. On the second day, he only went out for two hours because Junior wanted to go to the beach. Pete has not sold his story, and does not wish to profit from divorce. He believes her comments are defamatory and is desperate for her to apologise,” the source added.

The source further said that Jordan knew deep down that Peter is a great father to the kids, and that her comments were “unwarranted”.

“She knows he’s a great dad and, privately, doesn’t have a bad word to say about him,” the source added. (ANI)

Morrissey cancels more shows due to illness after b’day gig

Washington, May 26 (ANI): Just two days after marking his 50th birthday with a homecoming set in Manchester, singer Morrissey has cancelled gig dates because of ill-health.

The ex ‘Smiths’ frontman cancelled his May 25th’s show at the Salisbury City Hall and May 26th’s concert at the Troxy Ballroom in Mile End, east London.

Labelled the “greatest lyricist of his generation” this week, the singer-songwriter has been warned not to sing by doctors, said a spokeswoman.

“Morrissey is on doctor’s orders to postpone the show, to ensure a complete recuperation,” Contactmusic quoted her as saying.

She added: “Event organisers would like to apologise to fans for the disappointment and are working to reschedule this show, so advise ticket holders to hang on to their tickets.”

Apparently, these are not the first on the 50-year-old’s world tour with shows at the Royal Albert Hall and Birmingham Academy called off while an appearance on ‘Later… With Jools Holland’ was also scrapped.

However, the cancelled Birmingham and Albert Hall shows have now been rescheduled as part of a small October tour, it was announced last week. (ANI)
