UPDATE 1-Nyrstar H1 EDITDA beats hopes on zinc production

BRUSSELS, July 29 (Reuters) – Belgium’s Nyrstar (NYR.BR), the world’s biggest producer of zinc, reported forecast-beating underlying core profit boosted by higher zinc smelting production and first-time profits from its mining activities.

Over the past year, the group has expanded mining, which offers higher margins than its traditional smelting operations, buying mines or stakes in them in the United States, Peru and Greenland.

Nyrstar said on Thursday zinc production from its own mines was expected to reach 25 percent of zinc metal production by 2012.

Underlying EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation) tripled year-on-year to 93 million euros ($121 million). A Reuters poll of 7 banks and brokerages found an average forecast of 89.4 million euros.

With its Balen smelter back to full capacity, Nyrstar said first-half zinc market metal production rose 22 percent year-on-year to 530,000 tonnes.

A severe downturn in the construction and automotive markets at the end of 2008 and in 2009 led to lower demand for zinc and prices as low as some $1,100 per tonne, forcing Nyrstar to halt production at the Balen smelter and cut it at other plants.

Zinc is used to galvanise steel to protect against corrosion.

“Whilst in the short term markets are expected to remain volatile, the fundamental medium to long term outlook for zinc and other resources is strong, Chief Executive Roland Junck said in a statement.”

Zinc futures MZN3 ended 2009 at around $2,580 per tonne, and are currently trading at around $1,955.

A stronger US dollar also helped the group report higher profits. Nyrstar’s earnings are largely denominated in dollars, whereas a substantial part of operating costs are denominated in euros.

Nyrstar said it was on track to cut annual costs by 75 million euros by the end of 2010, compared with 2008 levels. ($1=.7684 euro) (Reporting by Antonia van de Velde, Editing by Ben Deighton)

The Antwerp-based brewer, which once produced 140,000 hectolitres a year but brews just half that today, is struggling to cope with a falling beer market in Western Europe, the paper said.

“We are looking for strategic partners,” the paper cited De Koninck managing director Bernard Van de Bogaert as saying.

He denied the brewer has been put up for sale, but had “asked colleagues to help” to enable it to increase production.

Van den Bogaert said the group has been in talks with both Heineken and Belgian specialty beer maker Duvel (DUVE.BR), De Standaard said.

Carrefour Belgium sales weaker on workers’ unrest- paper

BRUSSELS, April 2 (Reuters) – Turnover at Carrefour’s Belgian stores fell 15 percent in the last two weeks due to a drop in workers’ productivity as a result of announced job cuts in the country, the retailer’s chief executive for Belgium said.

Non-Cyclical Consumer Goods

“In the beginning, just after the announcement of restructuring, it wasn’t too bad. But now the stores are really suffering,” Gerard Lavinay told De Tijd in an interview published on Friday. “Workers are losing their motivation and customers are questioning what is happening.”

He declined to comment on how much in turnover a 15 percent drop represented.

De Tijd said the group lost 40 million euros in turnover due to blockades and strikes in the first week after the announcement in February, when it said it planned to close 21 stores in Belgium and cut 1,672 jobs.

Following talks with unions on Thursday, Carrefour said it could partially reverse that plan and keep nine of the 21 threatened stores open under certain conditions. (Writing by Antonia van de Velde, Editing by Ian Geoghegan)

Nicole Kidman’s baby sis looks older than her

Melbourne, Apr 22 (ANI): Nicole Kidman’s sister Antonia is three years younger to her, but at a recent event she looked quite older than her famous sis.

Although the ‘Australia’ actress had earlier described her TV presenter sister as her ‘other half’, people witnessed a big contrast when Antonia appeared for a television awards ceremony this week.

Antonia, 38, a mother-of-four showed off her toned legs and slim physique in a short dress and towering heels.

But, her smiling face revealed a little too much maturity for her young age- the skin around her eyes and mouth bore the laughter lines typical of a woman nearing 40.

And although Nicole has crossed the benchmark, she looks as if she might have been frozen in time, reports The Courier Mail.

The actress’ unlined look has left many people speculating that she has had botox treatment to maintain her youthful glory, which Nicole denies vehemently.

Instead, she has put her youthful looks down to ‘drinking lots of water, eating fruit and doing yoga’. (ANI)

Butterflies use wings to send both ‘sexy’ and ‘repulsive’ signals

Washington, April 2 (ANI): The eyespots of some butterflies serve to both attract mates and ward off predators, according to new research by Yale University biologists.

The researchers say that butterflies seem able to both attract mates and ward off predators by using different sides of their wings.

“You want to be noticeable and desirable for mates, but other onlookers, including predators, are paying attention to those signals as well,” says Jeffrey Oliver, a postdoctoral associate in Yale’s Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.

Oliver joined forces with Yale biologist Antonia Monteiro to study whether the eyespots on the upperside of butterflies’ wings – specifically, those of bush brown butterflies – serve a different purpose than the ones on the underside.

The researchers used different evolutionary models for their study.

They found that the eyespots on the upperside of the butterflies’ wings appeared to evolve much more quickly than those on the underside, meaning they appear and disappear frequently through the course of evolution.

According to them, the finding is consistent with the theory that these are used to attract mates, as signals used for sexual selection tend to evolve faster than others.

Oliver claims that his group’s study is the first to employ evolutionary history models to show that a species can use the same signal on different areas of its body to communicate different messages.

He says that butterflies can flash hidden eyespot on their forewings to confuse predators and give themselves time to escape.

While the researchers have yet to find out how the upperside eyespots communicate with potential mates, it is thought that they might help butterflies identify each other and thus would help keep different species from cross-mating.

Oliver has revealed that his team next plans to use longer evolutionary timescales to study where and how eyespots evolved, as well as whether they developed all at once, or independently over time.

The study appears in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences. (ANI)

Stonemart in Jaipur

Jaipur, Jan 13 (ANI): Largest exhibition on stones, ‘India Stonemart 2009′ drew large number of curious people in Jaipur.

The exhibition showcased a wide range of natural stones and supplementary stone products.

The four-day-long trade exhibition from January 8 drew stone traders from around ten countries.

“It was one of the largest stone exhibitions to be organised in India. All the stake holders involved in the industry like processor, machine suppliers, technology suppliers, architects and builders, everyone who is related with this can assemble together, to share ideas and to take actions to promote it in times to come.” said R K Gupta, CEO, Centre for Development of Stones.

With India producing 27 per cent of the stones produced in the world and exporting 11 per cent of the total global share, it is uniquely positioned to stage an event which is slated to become the largest expo on stone industry, anywhere in the world.

Local manufacturers also do feel that such events are helpful in show casing their products at a common platform so that buyers may get an opportunity to compare their products.

“Even though all the countries, whole world is suffering from financial crisis, we saw that India is one that suffers less and has more possibility to grow. It will also give other nations business opportunities to grow,” said Antonia, businessman from Italy.

India stands third, next to China and Italy only in stone production. India’s green marble is the pride of marble industry. Rajasthan alone contributes to around 65 per cent of total national production. By Lokendra Singh (ANI)
