Kiwis far safer in India than Indians in New Zealand

Wellington, Apr 20 (ANI): Indians are facing a tough time in New Zealand and are more victims of crime here in comparison to Kiwis in India.

New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said that in 2009 a total of 31 New Zealanders sought consular help from the New Zealand High Commission in New Delhi.

A spokesman said of these, four were categorised as “victims of crime” and none of them violent.

Stuff.co.nz reports that over the same time, four Indian nationals were homicide victims in New Zealand including a 78-year-old Jastmatbhai Patel, who was hauled out of his van and mortally beaten on the roadside.

The latest incident occurred in January this year when Indian national and father of two, taxi driver Hiren Mohini, was stabbed to death in Auckland.

In the time New Zealanders were complaining about bag snatching in Delhi, two other Indians were killed, including bottle store worker Navtej Singh and sixteen year old dairy worker Sai Krishna Naidu.

Indian Weekender magazine, making its first anniversary as a publication, noted that it had been a depressing time for Indians in New Zealand. (ANI)

Former magistrate snapped over neighbourhood dispute

A court has been told a former Victorian magistrate completely snapped when he used a key to scratch a neighbour’s car.

Sixty-year-old Raffaele Barberio of Brighton resigned from the bench after pleading guilty to assault and criminal damage.

He was a serving magistrate last year when he became involved in a dispute with a neighbour because he did not pick up his dog’s droppings.

The court heard Mr Barberio threatened to punch his neighbour and approached the man’s car to reach inside the open window.

After Mr Barberio was charged over that incident, he used a key to scratch the man’s car, causing more than $9,000 damage.

The court was told the assault happened on the anniversary of his mother’s death and he completely snapped when he scratched the man’s car because he was under severe stress.

He will be sentenced this afternoon.

Muslim Aid’s links to banned terror organisations being probed

London, Apr. 4 (ANI): A widely acclaimed British Muslim charity is being probed by the Charity Commission for allegedly channelling hundreds of thousands of pounds to a banned terrorist organisation.

According to its accounts, the Muslim Aid paid 325,000 pounds to the Islamic University of Gaza, where leading Hamas figures teach, and 13,998 pounds to the al-Ihsan Charitable Society, which is described by the US government as a “sponsor of terrorism” and a front for the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorist group.

Security sources said that Muslim Aid has helped channel a further 210,600 pounds to six other Hamas-linked organisations in the Gaza Strip since July 2009.

“We take very seriously allegations of links between charities and terrorist activity, and consider funding of terrorist organisations to be a ‘zero tolerance’ issue,” The Telegraph quoted the Charity Commission, as saying.

“The Commission has opened an investigation into Muslim Aid in light of these allegations and is working with the charity to address the issues raised,” it added.

Meanwhile, the Muslim Aid has refused to deny these claims.

The group, banned from the West Bank by the Israeli Government, has been praised by Prince Charles and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown for its “valuable work”.

“I wish the Muslim Aid and its passionate and committed staff and supporters the very best for another 25 years of achievement,” Brown said in a video address to Muslim Aid’s 25th anniversary last month.

The Prince also sent a message saying that “our country is incredibly fortunate to be able to count on organisations like Muslim Aid, who bring not only help, but hope to those most in need”. (ANI)

London, March 22 (ANI): Jade Goody’s widower Jack Tweed reportedly showed disrespect after arriving at the star’s memorial service in London more than half an hour late.

405th installation anniversary of Sri Guru Granth Sahib

Agra, Sep 19(ANI): People of all religions and communities gathered to celebrate the 405th anniversary of the installation of the Sikh holy scriptures, Sri Guru Granth Sahib, at Gurudwara Maithan in Agra.

This was a significant landmark for the Sikhs, as the 275-year-old handwritten scripture, whose front pages are written with gold, was put on display for the devotees.

“The Guru Granth Sahib has the preaching or ‘bani’ of famous poets like Kabir ji, Guru Ravidas ji and Baba Farid ji. It is symbol of humanity and so people of all the religions have gathered here to celebrate the ‘Prakash Parv’, the installation ceremony together,” said Kanwldeep Singh, President of Sri Gursikh Sabha.

Also on display was a miniature scripture of Guru Granth Sahib, which has been preserved at the Gurudwara Maithan for the past 15 years.

“We have Guru Granth sahib of 1 X 1 inches long. The British for the convenience of Sikh soldiers especially designed the holy book during the First World War, as they could not carry a normal sized book in the battlefield. The miniature Guru Granth Sahib was printed in Germany. It was kept in a silver box,” said Gyani Kashmir Singh, head Granthi of Gurudwara Maithan.

To mark the anniversary of the installation of Guru Granth Sahib, special prayers were also held in the Gurudwara premises, which once the house of Mai jassi that was visited by Guru Sri Tegh Bahadur.he gurudwara is currently undergoing renovation and will be expanded to facilitate the large number of devotees visiting the shrine.

A total of 20 million dollars will be spent on renovation and construction of new Gurudwara, a 100-bed hospital and a community hall.

Gurudwara Maithan also upheld the tradition of Langar, which has been followed over the centuries. Guru Arjan Dev and Mata Ganga set the precedent of preparing and serving food to the hungry, in the langar hall, where all social, economic and religious barriers collapse and all – the laborer, the lord, the peasant and the prince, are treated alike and served the same food in the same manner.

This is a practice of great social significance, and it is the key to the understanding of Sikhism. By Brijesh Sharma (ANI)

Malaysian PM okays Tamil content for 1Malaysia website

Kuala Lumpur, Sep. 16 (ANI): The 1Malaysia website will include content in the Tamil language, as it celebrates its first anniversary today.

According to Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak what made the anniversary even more special was that it coincides with Malaysia Day, which commemorates the day Sabah and Sarawak became part of the nation 46 years ago.

“In the past year, I have posted more than 70 blog entries, and more than 6,000 comments and e-mails have been received through the website,” The Star quoted him, as saying in his latest entry at www.1Malaysia.com.my yesterday.

In recognition of both anniversaries, Najib said the website would undergo a transformation to make it more engaging to the public.

Osama declares decades of war on ‘powerless’ Obama

Islamabad, Sep 14 (ANI): Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden has said that US President Barack Obama is “powerless” to stop the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to a transcript of a tape released by the terrorist organization’s media wing.

Al Qaeda’s As-Sahab Media released a video featuring a still image of Osama and audio statement entitled “A statement to the American people,” said the organisation IntelCenter.

SITE Intelligence Group, a terrorist-monitoring firm that translated the address, says Osama blames the wars on the “pro-Israel lobby” and corporate interests.

IntelCenter, another company that monitors terrorist propaganda, reports that the 11-minute video is an address to the American people, two days after the eighth anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

The group described the release as an address to the American public. Osama usually releases a statement around September or October each year, The Times reports.

In his last previous known message in June, Osama said US President Barack Obama had planted the seeds of “revenge and hatred” towards the United States in the Muslim world and warned of decades of conflict to come.

That audiotape aired on Qatar’s Al-Jazeera news channel less than an hour after Obama landed in Saudi Arabia.

Obama “has followed the steps of his predecessor in antagonizing Muslims… and laying the foundation for long wars,” Osama said in the June release, referring to deadly clashes in Pakistan between the US-backed government and Islamist militants.

“He gave his orders to (Pakistani President Asif Ali) Zardari and his army to prevent the people of Swat from applying Sharia (Islamic) law,” he said.

“Obama and his administration have sowed new seeds of hatred against America. Let the American people prepare to harvest the crops of what the leaders of the White House plant in the next years and decades,” said the Al-Qaeda leader. (ANI)

World’s first patient implanted with smallest rechargeable neurostimulator completes one year

Washington, Sep 12 (ANI): The world’s first patient to have been implanted with the smallest ever neurostimulator for chronic pain is celebrating the one-year anniversary of his procedure today.

One year ago, former U.S. Army parachutist Adam Hammond became the first patient in the world to have been implanted with an Eon Mini neurostimulator.

Adam got the chronic pain after a skydiving accident when his parachute deployed incorrectly, leaving him in a coma with life-threatening injuries, including a severed spine, broken femur, fractured pelvic bone, and torn aorta.

Although Adam recovered from his accident, he battled chronic pain that left him dependent on a wheelchair.

But, today, the picture has completely changed and Adam is active and exercising, studying for his law degree and no longer in need of a wheelchair.

Adam also went to Washington, D.C., recently to meet with representatives and advocate for pain legislation.

However, Adam is not the only chronic pain sufferers who have been helped with neurostimulation, an FDA-approved therapy that uses electrical pulses to interrupt pain signals to the brain.

Over 60,000 St. Jude Medical neurostimulation devices have been implanted in patients in 35 countries around the world. (ANI)

MJ Vienna tribute gig postponed

London, September 12 (ANI): The concert in honour of Michael Jackson slated to take place in Vienna this month has been rearranged for London in June next year.

The singer’s brother Jermaine previously named a host of artists who would perform at the tribute that was set to take place in front of former imperial Schoenbrunn Palace on September 26.

But the former ‘Jackson 5′ member revealed many top artists were unavailable for the date due to prior commitments.

“Numerous stars were just not able to change their schedules to make a live appearance at the Vienna event possible,” the BBC quoted him as saying.

He added: “Many artists and performers who I have spoken to personally told me that it would be a great honour to be part of this memorial concert for my late brother.

“However, due to the short time-frame it was not possible for many of them to change their schedule so that they could be on stage in Vienna on 26 September, therefore we decided, after careful consideration, to change the date of the tribute concert to June 2010 – just a few weeks before the first anniversary of his untimely death.

“Now we have eight months to put this monumental show together and not just eight weeks.”

Organisers World Tribute Productions promised a refund to all ticket holders for the Vienna concert.

Spokeswoman Nina Elland also said: “We need time to confirm the location. We are definitely moving to London and Wembley Stadium is our favourite location.” (ANI)

US marks eighth anniversary of 9/11 terror strike

New York, Sep 11(ANI): The eighth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center twin towers in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, which killed nearly 3,000 people, was observed here on Friday.

On September 11, 2001, four hijacked planes crashed into the twin Towers, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania.

Memorial ceremonies are to be held at these sites and four moments of silence are observed, at 8:46 a.m., 9:03 a.m., 9:59 a.m. and 10:29 a.m. ET, as these were the timings when the attacks took place.

President Barack Obama attended the wreath-laying ceremony at the Pentagon, where 184 people died.

The names of more than 2,700 victims from the site were also read by family members and volunteers at the New York ceremony, which was attended by U.S. Vice-President Joe Biden.

For the first time, the anniversary was designated as a National Day of Service. On Thursday, Obama issued a proclamation honouring those who died and had urged Americans to mark the anniversary with acts of community service.

Remembering those who lost their lives on the tragic day, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, said: “It is the sacred duty of the living to carry within us the memories of those we lost. While there is pain in remembering the loss, there is sweetness in remembering their lives.” (ANI)

Britain, France feared Berlin Wall fall would mark return of Nazi era

London, Sep.10 (ANI): Britain and France feared the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 would return Nazi-era ambitions to Germany.

East German border guards demolished a section of the wall on November 11, 1989

Secret British government documents to be published on Friday reveal the deep anxieties felt by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and President Frangois Mitterrand, following the fall of the wall.

According to The Telegraph, the documents, published by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, show that Mitterrand privately warned Lady Thatcher that a reunited Germany might “make even more ground than had Hitler”.

They also show that in January 1990, weeks after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Mitterrand warned Lady Thatcher that the prospect of reunification was turning the Germans into the “bad” people they used to be.

Thatcher’s deep-seated opposition to reunification, and her disagreement with the FCO over the issue, also emerges in the 500 published papers.

The Government’s decision to publish the papers, ahead of Germany’s 20th anniversary celebrations of the fall of the wall, will be seen as an attempt to show that officials were positive about reunification early on, despite Lady Thatcher’s personal concerns. (ANI)

Manchester City stadium ‘target of loner’s Columbine-style massacre plot’

London, Sep.8 (ANI): A teenage loner accused of plotting a Columbine-style gun massacre at his school also considered targeting Manchester City’s stadium.

According to The Sun, Matthew Swift, 18, was said to have sent his idea in a computer message to 16-year-old co- accused Ross McKnight.

A jury at Manchester Crown Court heard how he told McKnight: “I was thinking of targets to attack – like the City stadium.”

Both teens allegedly plotted a killing spree at Audenshaw High School, Manchester, on the tenth anniversary of the Columbine massacre.

Swift also wrote in a diary: “I cannot wait for Judgment Day. It is going to be awesome.” he friends deny conspiracy to murder and to cause explosions.

Obama to observe 9/11 anniversary at Pentagon

Washington, Sep 2 (ANI): President Barack Obama plans to observe the anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks with a visit to the Pentagon.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters about Obama’s plans on Tuesday. Obama, however, has no plans to visit New York in the eighth year since the World Trade Center was destroyed.

“I believe he will go to the Pentagon that day, and go to the memorial there and speak after that,” Gibbs said in his morning gaggle.

“But we have not announced more details than that,” Politico quoted him, as saying.

Asked after the gaggle if the president has any plans to visit New York City for the occasion, a White House official said he does not and that is unlikely to change.

President George W. Bush marked the 9/11 anniversary with visits to lower Manhattan in 2002 and 2006.

Last year, Obama and Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.), then Obama’s rival for the presidency, both attended a memorial ceremony at the World Trade Center site as Bush dedicated a memorial at the Pentagon. (ANI)

N. Korean delegation visit to China may tackle nuke issue

New Delhi, Sep 2 (ANI): A delegation from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) led by Deputy Foreign Minister Kim Yong-il has arrived in Beijing, China’s Foreign Ministry has confirmed.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement that positive signs were seen in August, suggesting tension had eased on the Korean Peninsula, the China Daily reported.

The DPRK has made a series of conciliatory gestures during the past month that analysts interpreted as an attempt to re-engage with the outside world.

But the ministry did not link the visit to the stalled Six-Party Talks, saying it was “part of regular exchanges to mark the 60th anniversary of the two countries formally establishing diplomatic ties.”

“The two sides will exchange views on bilateral ties and issues of common interest,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said at a media briefing.

Last Saturday, North Korea released four Republic of Korea (ROK) fishermen who were detained last month after their boat strayed into northern waters.

DPRK and ROK also agreed to hold reunions for families separated by the 1950-53 war, which was widely said to “be a new watershed in improving inter-Korean relations”.

“We hope that all sides concerned will grasp the opportunity so that the situation will develop with better prospects,” the statement said.

Last month, Chinese nuclear envoy, Wu Dawei, visited Pyongyang, a move that analysts thought was aimed at encouraging DPRK to return to the Six-Party Talks.

Fan Jishe, an expert on the DPRK at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said it was “very likely” that both China and the DPRK would exchange ideas about the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue during the delegation’s visit. (ANI)

Poland observes 70th anniversary of beginning of WWII

Warsaw (Poland), Sep.1 (ANI): Commemorations have begun in Poland to mark the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War.

The first ceremony took place at dawn on Westerplatte peninsula near Gdansk, where a German battleship fired the first shots on a Polish fort in 1939.

Poland’s president and prime minister led a sombre ceremony at the fort.

President Kaczynski and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk joined war veterans beside a monument to the heroes of Westerplatte at 4:45 a.m. local time.

The ceremony marked the exact time on September 1, 1939 when the German battleship Schleswig-Holstein opened fire at point-blank range on the fort, reports the BBC.

At the same time, the German Wehrmacht invaded Poland from east, west and south. The attacks triggered Britain and France’s declaration of war against Germany two days later.

Foreign leaders from 20 countries including Germany and Russia are expected in Gdansk later in the day as ceremonies continue.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin will speak later. (ANI)
