Kullu locals protest against hydropower project for illegal placement of power wires

Kullu (Himachal Pradesh), Mar 20 (ANI): The Alian Duhangan hydropower project in Kullu faced the agitation of the locals of Hirni village for placing power lines over their houses and across fields without their consent.

Work on the transmission line of the 192MW Alian Duhangan project from Prini in Manali to Nalagarh is almost 90 percent finished as the power plant is scheduled to generate power from April this year.

But angry locals are alleging that the transmission line that is being set up over the fields and houses is illegal and would lead to environmental degradation.

“These people are irritating us for no reason. We will let them set up the transmission lines but they should come to an agreement as they are doing this illegally without giving us any notice,” said Anita, a resident of Mashada village, whose house has come under the transmission line.

“I would say that if the company people forcefully try to set up the transmission line over my house with the help of administration, goons or police, I will burn myself to death,” added Anita.

The locals also say that the hydropower company has not yet paid their compensation as was assured in the agreement with the company.

The Executive Officer of the project, Rajesh Bhardwaj, has, however, denied the allegation and said that the company is trying to work according to the agreement as they have to pay four times actual loss of the farmer.

“The amounts of compensation these villagers are demanding are a bit high as per the agreement. We had a meeting with the local committee earlier in front of the deputy commissioner,” said Bhardwaj.

“As per the decisions made in that meeting, we are ready to pay four times the actual losses. Now again we are ready for a meeting and will obey whatever the deputy commissioner decides,” he added.

As many as 294 hydropower projects in the public and private sectors are coming up in Himachal Pradesh to generate 586 MW of electricity.

Most of the projects are located in Kullu, Shimla, Lahaul and Spiti, Mandi, Sirmaur and Kangra districts. Kullu alone has 83 projects.

Himachal Pradesh has abundant water resources, with five major rivers flowing from the western Himalayas.

It has a power potential of about 23,000 MW. Public sector units and private and joint venture companies have harnessed till about 6,480 MW now. (ANI)

Rural girls in Ludhiana drawn to professional education

Ludhiana, June 19 (ANI): Several girls belonging to rural parts of Ludhiana are eager to gain self-reliance and lead a professional’s life.

A college here has given them a hope that they can realise such a dream and for this it has opened many new courses which can be joined just after matriculation.

Home science, a holistic field of study, aims at improving the quality of life of families. In Ludhiana, it is empowering girls and enabling them to be professionals and self-employed entrepreneurs.

Established in 1966, the College of Home Science at the Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana has been empowering girls. With 305 students enrolled, it offers a number of study programmes with different levels and streams of education.

Girls from rural areas are eligible to join it after secondary education for one-year Diploma Course in Fashion designing, Interior Decoration, Management of Creche and Nursery Schools.

After completing their matriculation, they can take certificate courses in’Souvenirs and Handicarfts’ and Child Care.

“I believe that it is very necessary for women to be independent. Nowadays there are no government jobs. If we can learn and use fashion technology, we can stand on our feet. After getting a fashion designing certificate you can start your own unit and can earn handsomely,” said Baljinder Kaur, a student.

Keeping in view that many rural areas do not have adequate infrastructure and facilities to offer quality programmes of study at their level, the College has recently changed its admission criteria for B.SC (Hons.) Home Science six-year-programme.

Candidates can now enrol themselves after matriculation and this presents better opportunities for rural candidates.

The College has modified its curriculum and added new courses like convenience and health foods and apparel industry management.

It has certainly helped the rural girls by increasing their competence to work in the private sector.

“Being a girl also it has lots of benefit because tomorrow we are going to be the homemakers. So it is going to be really beneficial otherwise also since girls are striding forward in their career this is a very good option it is related to there household work also and gives them a good option to work,” said Jas Keerth, a student.

“Along with agriculture, development of rural families is very important and its main mandate is to improve the quality of the life of women. Be it in the form of giving residents instructions through teaching of various courses or taking up community directed research programmes, then extending the knowledge of teaching as well as research to farm families,” said Dr. Neelam Grewal, Dean of the College of Home Science, Panjab Agricultural University.

Ludhiana-based Anita is one of the many successful women who have graduated from the College of Home Science. After completion of one year Diploma Course in Fashion Designing in 2002, Anita launched her own fashion brand ‘Venenzians’. By Karan Kapoor (ANI)

Victoria Premier meets Indian envoy, reassures her about Indian students safety

Melbourne, May 29 (ANI): The Premier of the Australian state of Victoria, John Brumby today met with Indian High Commissioner Sujatha Singh and Consul General of India Anita Nayar to discuss the safety and security of the Indian community in Victoria.

In a statement issued after the meeting, Brumby said the discussions had centered on the safety and security of Victoria’s Indian student community and further measures that may be required to ensure their experience of living, studying and working in Victoria was a successful and enjoyable experience.

“It was a pleasure to meet Mrs. Singh and Ms Nayar, and our discussions were very positive and productive,” Brumby said.

“Our discussions were about safety and security within Victoria’s Indian community, including what measures our Government and police have in place to ensure safety and what further measures may be required to make sure that Victoria continues to be the first-choice destination for Indian students.

“It’s important to note that on the whole Victoria is a wonderful place for Indian students and we want every Indian student who comes to Victoria to have that experience.

“The vast majority of Victorians welcome Indian students to our state but, we do recognize that there are some times and places where Indian students are more vulnerable and that’s a concern we’ve been working to resolve.

“We agree that while the overall rate of crime in Victoria is low compared to other jurisdictions, any incidence of crime or violence against a member of Victoria’s Indian community is one too many, completely unacceptable and should not be tolerated.

“We are a community built on the understanding that we may come from different and races, follow many faiths and different cultures – but we are all equal and our community is richer because of our multicultural make-up. Any attack on an individual because of race, culture, gender or appearance is disgraceful and unacceptable.”

Brumby said attacking any individual is abhorrent to the values and principles that made Victoria among the world’s most successful multicultural communities.

“That’s why our Government introduced the Racial and Religious Tolerance Act and that’s why Victoria Police is working hard with our Indian community to tackle incidents of crime and violence,” he said.

“Last year our Government established an Overseas Student Experience Taskforce which examined a range of issues, including safety. The task force released a report in late December that included a number of recommendations that the Government is closely examining.

“But we recognize that there is more that can be done and we will look at whether there needs to be changes to make it easier to access information or legislative changes to ensure penalties are matching the severity of a crime.

“With this in mind we will be announcing new measures in the near future to improve the overseas student experience, particularly with respect to safety.”

In addition, Victoria Police is also working to tackle issues together with the Indian community, he said.

In a separate statement, Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Julia Gillard said she was deeply saddened and shocked by the attack on a group of Indian students in Melbourne over the weekend and condemned it unreservedly.

“I would like to extend my sympathies to the victims of this callous attack. I want to reiterate my statement before Parliament on Tuesday that the Australian Government will not tolerate victimisation and violence against international students. Such attacks violate the fundamental Australian values of tolerance and respect for diversity in our society,” she said.

“The Victorian Police are investigating this serious crime. On the information I have, two people have been interviewed and one has been charged with assault-related offences and is currently in custody on remand. I note also that two alleged attackers have been arrested in relation to an incident involving an Indian student on a train in Melbourne on 9 May 2009,” she added.

“I can assure you that the perpetrators of recent attacks in both Sydney and Melbourne will face the full force of the law and I will be working closely with the Victorian and New South Wales State Governments to ensure every effort is made to minimize the possibility of such attacks in the future,” Gillard said.

She said that the Australian Government would be convening a round table to discuss issues affecting international students and student safety soon. (ANI)

London, May 27 (ANI): Frank and Anita Milford, aged 101 and 100 respectively, celebrated their 81st wedding anniversary yesterday. And, in case, you’re wondering what’s keeping their marriage alive, well the answer is pretty ‘mundane’ – regular rows!

The couple, who became man and wife in 1928, met at a YMCA dance in Plymouth, where they still live.

However, as well as a little argument, “a little romance” is also essential.

“It’s our golden rule,” Mrs Milford said.
Couples these days don’t last long because they often don’t take enough time for each other. There isn’t enough respect – love is about give and take. Our advice to young couples would be to make time for a little romance every day,” she added.

Frank, a retired dockyard worker, said: “To win over your sweetheart you need a dose of old-fashioned chivalry and don’t let your standards slip.”

Their son, Frank Jnr, 74, said: “They spend most of their time together, with Dad almost completely deaf and blind, so it’s difficult for him. Mum is a chatterbox and nothing has changed there.” (ANI)
