“Salt” can’t shake “Inception” at box office

July 25 (Reuters) – Angelina Jolie’s new spy thriller “Salt” failed to take the North American box office crown from Leonardo DiCaprio’s “Inception,” which enjoyed a stronger-than-expected hold in its second weekend.

According to studio estimates issued on Sunday, “Inception” earned $43.5 million during the three days beginning on Friday, while “Salt” was at No. 2 with $36.5 million.

Pundits had predicted “Salt” might hit the $40 million range, although distributor Columbia Pictures said the opening was in line with its expectations.

The three-day estimate represents a significant drop from the $50 million openings for each of Jolie’s last big films, “Wanted” and “Mr and Mrs Smith.”

Jolie earned $20 million for “Salt,” a timely thriller about Russian sleeper spies preparing to bring the United States to its knees. The high-energy action role was originally envisaged for Tom Cruise, who went on to make the box office dud “Knight and Day” instead.

“Inception,” starring DiCaprio as a thief who steals secrets from deep within people’s subconscious, raced to $143.7 million after 10 days, thanks to a drop of just 31 percent from last weekend. Movies generally lose about half of their opening-weekend audience.

“It’s driven by word of mouth, it’s driven by repeat business already,” Warner Bros. domestic distribution president Dan Fellman said of the film’s strong hold.

The $160 million project was written and directed by Christopher Nolan, the English filmmaker responsible for the last two “Batman” movies.

Angelina Jolie jolts a man’s world: action films

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – The National Organization for Women should send Angelina Jolie a nice cheese basket (or vice versa).

The world’s most famous Hollywood humanitarian might not have single-handedly erased gender inequality in the movie industry, but she sure has struck a major blow for actresses. How else to explain her $20 million payout for Sony’s next big summer release, “Salt,” an action project that originally was written to star a man — no less than Tom Cruise?

“It’s definitely unusual that a female has become an action star,” “Salt” producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura says. “But it’s a funny thing. She’s not a female action star; she’s an action star. She’s really the first female to transcend gender. I don’t think it’s occurred before.”

To di Bonaventura’s point, a star must be in some rarefied atmosphere when a lead role in a big studio action movie is rewritten from male to female. It’s akin to the groundbreaking result when 25 years ago Jerry Bruckheimer had the white lead in the “Beverly Hills Cop” screenplay refashioned so it could star a 22-year-old black actor named Eddie Murphy.

Then again, given Jolie’s track record, it’s not so much of a stretch. In the past 10 years, she has starred in five action-dominated films that have averaged $124 million in domestic grosses. Worldwide, those grosses total nearly $1.5 billion. Again, that’s just her action roles — “Wanted” (2008), “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” (2005), “Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life” (2003), “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” (2001) and “Gone in 60 Seconds” (2000).

The Philip Noyce-directed “Salt,” in which Jolie plays a CIA spook accused of foreign espionage who must go on the run, looks prepared to push that total upward when it opens next Friday. Industry tracking a week out has it opening north of $30 million, but its only competition that weekend is the kid-friendly “Ramona and Beezus” and the second week of “Inception,” which means interest is likely to spike as it gets closer to opening.

“Wanted” opened at $50.9 million against “WALL-E” two summers ago, and “Smith” opened at $50.3 million in 2005.

Sony also has her next project, “The Tourist,” a reworking of the 2005 French thriller “Anthony Zimmer,” which will open in February. That film pairs her with one of the most bankable actors in the world, Johnny Depp. As Elise, a femme fatale, Jolie gets to show off her sensual side and her active one when killers start chasing the patsy she has put in harm’s way.

No actress in Hollywood history has been able to chisel out the supremacy Jolie has in a male-dominated genre. Actually, her achievement is bigger than that. Her standard deal, which she received for “Salt” and “Tourist,” is matched by only one or two other actors in the world, with $20 million up front, a hefty share of the profits plus other sizable ancillary benefits. She already was getting $15 million for “Smith” and “Wanted.”

“The fact that she is in the entertainment industry and can approach a male salary is an anomaly,” says Lori Watson, director of women’s and gender studies at the University of San Diego. “Maybe she can command a salary, but she can’t break through the expectations that women are supposed to be beautiful and sexualized and fit a certain mold and behave in a certain way.”

Over the years, mostly thanks to the efforts and vision of director James Cameron, audiences have been treated to a rare female lead who can handle herself in a gun or fistfight. Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley in “Aliens” in 1986, Linda Hamilton in “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” in 1991, and Zoe Saldana and Michelle Rodriguez in “Avatar” last year all represented strong, confident women ready to knock some heads.

Kate Beckinsale and Milla Jovovich carved out B-movie franchises as action heroines in the fantasy-horror genre — Beckinsale with “Underworld” and Jovovich with “Resident Evil.” And Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu and Drew Barrymore threw themselves into action camp with the successful “Charlie’s Angels” movies — but those were highly stylized three-handers, and all three thesps have since quickly retreated to more traditional roles. (Diaz did just jump on a motorcycle with Cruise in “Knight and Day,” but that has underperformed in North America.)

Television has been a better training ground for the female action archetype. Jessica Alba launched her career in “Dark Angel” (Cameron again!), Jennifer Garner was fierce as the college student/spy of “Alias,” courtesy of J.J. Abrams, and Joss Whedon birthed “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and “Dollhouse” (Eliza Dushku).

It’s notable that Garner dabbled in action on the big screen in “Daredevil” and its spinoff “Elektra,” but quickly returned to the world of romantic comedy when those failed. Alba suited up for the “Fantastic Four” movies but had very little to do. And while Scarlett Johansson’s turn as Black Widow in “Iron Man 2″ looked promising, that was a small part and no one expects her to spend much more time in the blow-’em-up genre.

Other top actresses still command huge audiences in less surprising contexts. Sandra Bullock has reminded everyone that she can draw major bank, in feel-good drama (“The Blind Side”) and traditional romantic comedy (“The Proposal”). And Julia Roberts is likely to clean up in “Eat Pray Love.”

Like those women, Jolie also has an Oscar on her mantle, and a genuine yen to tackle challenging parts in adult dramas such as “Changeling,” “A Mighty Heart” and “Girl, Interrupted,” which got her that gold statuette (and an asterisk for oddest acceptance speech). But Jolie has also contributed her voice to three cartoons — “Kung Fu Panda,” “Beowulf” and “Shark Tale” — that have grossed another $1.2 billion worldwide.

Jolie’s not bulletproof. She’s had her misfires and middling movies (“Taking Lives” and “Beyond Borders” come to mind), but she’s got the dramatic acting chops and the athletic prowess to sell herself in almost anything (though even her prestige movies don’t always bring in the big bucks).

So what, precisely, can’t she do? Well, just one thing, actually. Romantic comedy. She did try it once, in “Life, or Something Like It” in 2002, and the $14.4 million domestic gross sent a message she clearly noted.

“She’s too strong, she’s too forceful,” says Hollywood historian David Thomson (“Rosebud: The Story of Orson Welles”). “And that’s not just her screen character. It’s her public character, too. She’s not got that sort of availability for romance. She isn’t really sentimentally appealing. She needs to be doing strong things — crazy things, sometimes — to work on screen.”

Put another way, Jolie is tough for female audiences to get behind. She’s threatening. Whether accurate or not, many perceive even Jennifer Aniston to have been a victim of Jolie’s sharkish charm after husband Brad Pitt became smitten with Jolie during the shoot for “Smith.”

“My feeling on the ground is at the beginning of that relationship a lot of women viewed her as a homewrecker,” says Watson. “But since then, her charitable work, her adoption, her work with the U.N., and the work that they’re doing in New Orleans and her public face as a mother appeals to a lot of women as a kind of person who has A) a completely supportive partner that a lot of women would like and don’t have, and b) someone who can manage a family and a career and is committed to those mainstream values even if she lives in a very different, romanticized, Hollywood rich kind of way.”

But how long can her appeal last? Her fans are beginning to slide more heavily into the over-30 crowd, away from the male teens who want to see her bend bullets and look at the camera over a naked, tattooed back. Sooner rather than later, they’re going to want to see a new face (and naked back).

Perhaps Jolie is aware of this. Because now, at the pinnacle of her success, she is making noises that she might not be much longer for the business. “I’m very, very grateful, it’s a fun job. It’s a luxury,” she recently told Vanity Fair. “But I don’t think I’ll do it much longer.”

Jolie is only 35 years old. By the Indiana Jones standard, then, she’s got another 30 years of running, punching and flipping ahead. Although she’s trimmed her work commitments down to one film a year, she’s got sequels to “Salt,” “Wanted” and even, possibly, “Tourist” to consider. Also, there’s the “Sleeping Beauty” spinoff “Maleficent,” a new take on “Cleopatra,” the dark drama “Serena” for director Darren Aronofsky, and another potential franchise spun from the Patricia Cornwell character Dr. Kay Scarpetta, a sleuthing medical examiner.

If she did call it quits, is there anyone to carry the mantle if Jolie suddenly walked away?

“I don’t see anybody right now,” di Bonaventura says. “Will there be more female action heroes? There will be another one, yeah, I believe that. You look at these things as a progression. First they tried to mimic what a male action star was. And now with Angie, you’re just letting her be what she is. We’ve gotten away from that male classification of what is an action star. And that means that will open possibilities for somebody else. You just needed somebody to break the ground.”

New York, May 20 (ANI): Actress Angelina Jolie’s facial features appear to have been Photoshopped in Sony Pictures’ promotional poster for ‘Salt’.

Her nose appeared to have been altered to a thin line, her cheekbones accentuated and her famously pillowy lips touched up.

Celebrity endorsements of politicians don”t attract voters

Washington, April 27 (ANI): Celebrity endorsements do not help political candidates, a new American study has found.

According to two new studies from North Carolina State University, young voters are not influenced by celebrity endorsements of political candidates; in fact, sometimes voters like the candidate less as a result of receiving a celebrity”s endorsement.

Dr. Michael Cobb, associate professor of political science at NC State and co-author of a paper describing the studies, said: “Celebrities have been involved in politics for a long time, but there is an increasing interest in the role celebrities play in presidential politics.

“We set out to determine if celebrity endorsements influence voting decisions, particularly among young people.”

The researchers did two separate studies including more than 800 college students, evaluating whether endorsements from celebrities – including Angelina Jolie and George Clooney – would affect voting behavior if they endorsed a political candidate.

They found that celebrity endorsements do not help political candidates – but they can hurt them.

Cobb said: “In one of the studies, for example, we found that by exposing young people to a celebrity endorsement, they liked the candidate less and were less likely to vote for him.”

Moreover, the researchers found that a political endorsement can backfire on the celebrities themselves.

Cobb said: “Self-identified Democrats who were told in a study that George Clooney endorsed a Republican candidate reported that they liked him less and found him less attractive.

The researchers found similar results among self-identified Republicans when they were told that Clooney had endorsed a Democrat.

Cobb said: “The positive effects of a celebrity endorsement are minimal for politicians.

“Instead, it”s much easier for perceptions of a celebrity to be adversely affected by giving his or her endorsement.”

But while the impact of a celebrity endorsement is minimal, Cobb says that there are circumstances when such an endorsement may be helpful to a political candidate.

For instance, if a celebrity attends a political rally, it could boost attendance.

“Are you more likely to attend a political event if the candidate is slated to appear by him or herself, or if the candidate is going to appear with Madonna?” Cobb asked.

Endorsements may also help candidates distinguish themselves from a crowded field during primaries, Cobb pointed out, when party affiliation is not a factor, since all of the contenders are in the same party.

The research, “Seeing Stars: Are young voters influenced by celebrity endorsements of candidates?,” was co-authored by Cobb and NC State undergraduate Kaye Usry.

The paper was presented April 22 at the 68th Annual Conference of the Midwest Political Science Association in Chicago. (ANI)

Brangelina ‘planning small wedding’

Washington, Apr 27 (ANI): Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are reportedly planning to get married.

They are eyeing a low-key affair in order to avoid accusations of wasting money, reports Contactmusic.

The couple raises six children, Maddox, eight, Pax, six, Zahara, five, three-year-old Shiloh and 21-month-old twins Knox and Vivienne.

A friend of the couple told America”s OK! magazine: “Brad and Angelina are exceptionally private people, and they pride themselves on being humble and not wasting money.

“So some over-the-top, beachfront affair with hundreds of guests isn”t going to happen.”

A source close to Brad – who was previously married to Jennifer Aniston – and Angelina said: “First it was Maddox, who has begged his parents to tie the knot for years.

“Lately, Shiloh and Zahara have been chiming in, and Pax thinks it would just be the coolest thing ever to be a ring bearer.” (ANI)

Hollywood turns fashion on it’s head with back-to-front look

After Angelina Jolie, Amanda Seyfried has done it too. The Hollywood beauties have come up with a novel way to stand out on the red carpet, by wearing their dresses back-to-front.

At first glance, it looked like the ‘Mama Mia’ star Seyfried had accidentally committed a rather regrettable fashion blunder.

But as the actress sashayed down a Hollywood red carpet in a dress featured a forward-facing zip, it became clear that her back-to-front look was a very deliberate style statement, reported Daily Mail online.

The 24-year-old looked rather pleased with her choice of confection as she posed for photographers at the premiere of ‘Mother and Child’ at Hollywood’s Egyptian Theatre.

The unusual number featured purple satin trimmed with the exposed seam on one side and a photo-print design on the other.

Of course, in the sometimes topsy-turvy world of high fashion, front facing zips are a popular design feature among the likes of Alexander Wang, Narciso Rodriguez and Victoria Beckham.

Seyfried is not the first celebrity to do so. Angelina Jolie purposefully turned around her Max Azria dress for the Screen Actors Guild Awards last year to expose her tattooed back with its plunging neckline.

Though Jolie won plaudits for her fashion statement, singer Celine Dion was not as lucky. She was universally panned for wearing a white jacket back-to-front to the 1999 Oscars.

Jolie’s fave actor: Brad Pitt

London, Apr 17 (ANI): Angelina Jolie has revealed that her favourite actor is partner Brad Pitt.

“He’s my favourite actor to work with,” she tells US magazine Entertainment Weekly. “The complicated thing is to find the right project.”

The mum of six started filming her latest film, action thriller Salt, just eight months after giving birth to twins Vivienne and Knox, reports The Daily Express.

While talking about the film, she said: “The push to be strong was very welcome at the time. The funny thing is, now I am twice as motivated to do a cool stunt because my kids will like it.”

And her commitment impressed director Phillip Noyce.

“She doesn’t have to do it but she has absolutely no fear. Usually when an actor becomes more successful they play it safe,” he said. (ANI)

Jolie’s dad feels proud of his ‘spectacular’ grandkids

Sydney, April 16 (ANI): Angelina Jolie’s father Jon Voight has praised his daughter’s children, calling them spectacular.

The 71-year-old actor spoke about his six grandchildren at the Hollywood premiere of the movie Kick-Ass, reports The Sydney Morning Herald.

“The grandkids are quite spectacular, as everybody knows,” Voight told USMagazine.com.

The Oscar-winning actor reconciled with Jolie in February after years of alienation and met Jolie-Brad Pitt’s kids – Maddox, eight, Zahara and Pax, six.

He also met Jolie and Pitt’s three biological children Shiloh, three and 19-month-old twins Knox and Vivienne in Venice.

“It”s nice to have something that”s positive,” he said.

“Angie and I have been in contact on the phone and by email for some time now. We”ve been working towards a full reconciliation for a while. Angie had to feel it was the right time to bring me into the lives of her and the kids and after some work she decided the moment had arrived.I hope I get to see them again soon. I want to spend as much time with them as possible,” Voight said. (ANI)

Brangelina visits Montenegro

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have travelled to the former Yugoslav republic of Montenegro following a visit to Bosnian refugees earlier this week.

The owner of a hotel near the medieval coastal town of Budva says Pitt knows the area from when he shot one of his first films, The Dark Side Of The Sun, in 1988.

“Brad Pitt told me that he had wanted to show Montenegro to his wife as he had nice memories of Perast, Sveti Stefan and Kotor where he had shot one of his first movies at the beginning of his career in the 1980s,” Splendid hotel owner Zarko Radulovic said.

“He told me they could bring the kids here for a vacation as they like it and the nature is nice.”

The Hollywood power couple were in Bosnia on Monday visiting internally displaced Bosnians still living in collective centres, often in appalling conditions, 14 years after the end of the war.

Jolie is a goodwill ambassador for the UN’s refugee agency UNHCR.

The pair are due to fly back to Italy later today.

Jolie is filming The Tourist in Venice with Johnny Depp and director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, who was behind the critically acclaimed 2007 German film The Lives Of Others.

Megan Fox turns down Lara Croft role to avoid Angelina Jolie comparisons

New York, April 01 (ANI): Hollywood hottie Megan Fox has turned down the chance to be the next Lara Croft to dissuade more comparisons to Angelina Jolie, original star of the film ‘Tomb Raider’.

“The offer has been on the table for Megan for a while but she’s reluctantly turned it down,” the New York Daily News quoted an insider telling the entertainment Web site Showbiz Spy.

“She’s the logical choice to play Lara and she loves the character but the comparison with Angelina [Jolie] is too much,” the insider added.

Fox has been fighting comparisons with Jolie since she rose to fame in 2007 as the star of movie ‘Transformers’. (ANI)

Jolie a ”self-centered psycho”, claims ex-bodyguard

Melbourne, Apr 1 (ANI): Angelina Jolie is a self-centered psycho, according to her former bodyguard.

According to In Touch magazine, Bill, who once worked as a bodyguard for the actress, said she has two faces, reports The Daily Telegraph.

“Angelina has a public and a private persona,” and didn”t hold back on his true feelings.

“In my opinion, the real Angelina is self-centered and a control freak,” said Bill. “She has no patience at all. She doesn”t do things out of the kindness of her heart. And she’s totally psycho.”

Continuing with shocking revelations, he said that Jolie’s partner Brad Pitt was totally laid back, while Angie: “She screams and yells a lot, then walks away.”

He said her staff would often have to take care of the children because she would “disappear into her suite for hours. “She would punish them with silence,” said Bill, adding, “I think she could be abusive at times in a mental way.”

“She is not moved by tears,” he added. Bill also claims Angelina had “quirky habit” of “giggling when one of her kids would start crying.” (ANI)

“But it”s nonetheless notable that Jolie is actively engaging with the material, the source added. (ANI)

Seyfried, 24, says that she does not want her life to be an open book the way actress Angelina Jolie’s life is.

“I don’t want to become a brand and I certainly don’t want to have a persona,” the Daily Star quoted her as telling Vanity Fair.

“I don’t want to be in magazines everyday, because I don’t want people to get to know one thing.

“I feel like Angelina Jolie can still play a character and you can still get lost in it. Even though she’s all over the place, and that’s unfortunate for her.

“But luckily she still maintains enough anonymity for us to believe her,” she added. (ANI)
