Android owners getting stiffed on OS updates, study claims

Android phones have a bad history of not getting the latest OS upgrades, often leaving them several versions behind, says a new study.

Tracking 18 different Android phones shipped in the U.S. through the middle of 2010, the Understatement’s Michae

l Degusta found that most have not received major OS upgrades or even minor support patches, even though they’re still under contract.

Pointing to one example, Degusta said that the Samsung Behold II on T-Mobile was supposed to be upgraded to Eclair, aka Android 2.1. But by the time the phone hit the market, it was already two versions behind, and then Samsung never bothered to upgrade it.

As another example, the Motorola Devour on Verizon was already one version behind on the OS when it debuted in early 2010. Less than a year later, it was three major versions behind.

Breaking down his study, Degusta uncovered several specific items:

7 of the 18 Android phones tracked never ran a current version of the operating system.
12 of 18 only ran a current version of the OS for a matter of weeks or less.
10 of 18 were at least two major versions behind within their two-year contract.
11 of 18 stopped getting any support updates less than a year after release.
13 of 18 stopped getting support updates before sales were halted or shortly thereafter.
15 of the 18 don’t run Gingerbread, which shipped in December 2010.
With the debut of Ice Cream Sandwich, every device tracked will be another major version behind.
At least 16 of 18 will almost certainly never get Ice Cream Sandwich.

Beyond not receving a recent version of the Android OS, many phones are also missing out on support updates, especially those that have been discontinued. That leaves such phones vulnerable if a security or privacy issue hits an older version of Android, contends Degusta.

In comparison, Apple has a strong history of supporting the last several models of its iPhones through iOS upgrades and updates, the study noted.

But therein lies the rub.

As both phone maker and OS supplier, Apple controls the entire process and can roll out major iOS releases or smaller security updates that most iPhone owners can quickly install.

Android is more a case of too many cooks in the kitchen. As Degusta notes, “a big part of the problem is that Android has to go from Google to the phone manufacturers to the carriers to the devices, whereas iOS just goes from Apple directly to devices.”

To try to remedy the problem, Google announced an effort this past May to create guidelines on how quickly Android devices would get updated. Dubbed the Android Update Alliance by some, this effort was presumably supposed to lead Google to work with the device makers and carriers to keep Android phones better updated.

But like Degusta, tech blogger site Android and Me found in August that only a small number of Android phones were running the latest version of the operating system, showing that Google still has its work cut out for it.

Google did not immediately respond to CNET’s request for comment.

World Cup helps Baidu score record Q2

Internet searches surged during the World Cup soccer tournament, helping Baidu.com score its best quarter ever in terms of revenue and net profit.

China’s largest Internet search provider said revenue surged 74 percent from last year to a record US$282.3 million, while net profit climbed 119 percent to $123.5 million.

Baidu credited healthy growth in its customer base and improved efficiency for the strong performance, but also noted the surge in Internet search related to the World Cup. The first game of the competition kicked off on June 11 and the final was played July 11.

“This quarter’s strong performance also underscores the vast Internet market opportunities for us and the growing appreciation for search engine marketing in China,” said Robin Li, Baidu’s chairman and CEO, in a statement.

Analysts have said that Baidu also gained from Google’s decision last March to re-route China-based searches through Hong Kong to avoid censorship laws in China. Some advertisers dropped Google and turned to Baidu.

Investors sent shares of Baidu stock up 3.2 percent, or $2.33, to $75.64 in after-market trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market, after the company reported its results.

During a conference call, one analyst asked Baidu about its plans for a mobile phone operating system to rival Google’s Android. News sources in China have reported that Baidu is working on a mobile OS, but the company declined to comment specifically on any project.

“Over the past few years, we’ve seen faster growth in mobile search versus PC search but it’s still a very small percentage of our search traffic,” Li said on the call. He noted that most people in China don’t have 3G mobile phones, making Internet search less popular than PC search, but that “going forward, we think the cell phone will take over and mobile traffic will take over.”

“We have a number of very exciting projects going on internally and obviously we are excited about the mobile Internet going forward,” he said.

The company expects its third quarter to be even better than its record-breaking second quarter, forecasting revenue of $324.4 million.

SK Tel to offer LTE in 2011, ups smartphone target

July 14 (Reuters) – SK Telecom Co (017670.KS), South Korea’s top mobile carrier, said on Wednesday it would provide next-generation networks from next year to support high-speed data services.

With rival KT Corp (030200.KS) enjoying strong appetite for Apple’s (AAPL.O) iPhone, SK Telecom raised its smartphone subscriber target for 2010 by a quarter to 2.5 million and will offer more than 20 models, most running on Google’s (GOOG.O) Android platform.

SK Telecom, which controls half of the country’s mobile market, also plans to offer unlimited data package services for subscribers paying 55,000 won ($45.36) and over in monthly service charges, as it seeks to fend off competition and retain heavy data users.

The company will provide commercial Long Term Evolution (LTE) services, also known as 4G networks, in 2011 with nationwide coverage by 2013. Handsets compatible for both 3G and LTE will be introduced in 2012, it said.

Global telecoms operators are betting on the prospects for LTE technology on surging data traffic as consumers increasingly surf the Internet on cellphones and smartphone sales boom.

Rival KT Corp (030200.KS) also plans to invest in LTE next year [ID:nTOE64F019]

Shares in SK Telecom fell 1.8 percent to 160,500 won by 0525 GMT, lagging a 1.7 percent gain in the broader market.

Mobile Facebook users hit 150 million

Facebook has about 150 million mobile users, up from just 100 million in April, and is counting on cell phones as the key platform for the future, according to the social-networking giant’s head of mobile products, Eric Tseng.

“Mobile is fast becoming our growth lever,” Tseng told attendees at the MobileBeat 2010 conference in San Francisco on Tuesday. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg had pegged the number of mobile users at 100 million at the f8 developer conference in late April. Facebook has about 500 million members overall.

Over the next six months, Facebook’s mobile platforms will “catch up” with its PC browser-based interface. Among other things, the company will soon update the application programming interfaces for its Android and iPhone apps, Tseng said. The company is also working to expand its “social graph,” which extends features of Facebook onto other sites, to take advantage of mobile use. For example, a lunchtime promotion for a nearby restaurant might become more effective if it incorporated ratings by a mobile user’s Facebook friends, he said.

But mobile may be even more important beyond the smartphone-heavy developed countries, according to Tseng. In many poorer countries, mobile devices are the first on-ramp to the Internet for most consumers, and Facebook is developing ways for them to become members and use the social network without ever starting up a PC.

Working with Indian carrier Airtel, Facebook set up a mobile-only user experience in which the carrier’s subscribers can join Facebook on a phone. The company is even experimenting with serving subscribers that don’t have data plans, running a trial in which one carrier is allowing subscribers to browse the stripped-down, text-only 0.facebook.com mobile service free of charge. This has drawn users into Facebook while also getting them into the mobile data world, Tseng said.

In what may be good news for Facebook users, Tseng said the company has no interest right now in putting ads on mobile Facebook, because it’s still focused on expanding mobile use. However, it would be fairly straightforward technically to do so, he added.

Mobile Developer`s Smartphone OS Preferences

iGR Finds iPhone OS Single Most Used Platform Among Developers
AUSTIN, Texas–(Business Wire)–
iGR, a market strategy consultancy focused on the wireless and mobile industry,
today announced the findings of a recent study on U.S.-based mobile developers.
The survey asked respondents a series of questions regarding the platforms for
which they currently develop and those for which they intend to develop in the
next 12 months. Other issues researched included which OEMs provided the best
support, the types of applications they were developing and which devices,
including tablets, they planned to support.

Fifty-three percent of the surveyed developers build applications for the Apple
iPhone OS. The next most popular platforms were RIM BlackBerry OS, Android and
Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.5. – this is a drastic shift from iGR`s 2009
developer study in which Windows Mobile was by far the most popular OS.
Developers generally develop for multiple platforms and are increasingly
developing for more. Respondents currently developed for 2.4 separate platforms,
a number that will increase to 3.4 over the next 12 months.

Apple`s iPhone OS also led in developers planning to develop in future, with
more than half of those not currently developing for the platform planning to in
the next 12 months. Google`s Android and BlackBerry OS were the next most
popular platforms that programmers were planning to start supporting.

When asked to indicate the five most important factors when choosing a mobile
platform, more than half of developers consider multi-touch to be important or
essential to application development, making a whole wealth of devices
inadequate by this standard.

“With each new feature and capability added to smartphone OSes, competition in
the space continues to heat up,” said Matthew Vartabedian, research vice
president of iGR. “Providing a solid developer experience and the ability for
developers to generate revenue and profits off of the platforms is a key aspect
of that competition.”

Google launches ‘smart’ TV

London, May 21 (ANI): Google has launched ”smart” TV, a service that integrates Internet and television.

The company has collaborated with Sony Corp., Intel Corp. and Logitech International to turn televisions into giant monitors for Internet browsing so it can make more money selling ads.

It generated nearly 24 billion dollars in revenue last year, mostly from Internet ads displayed on computer screens.

Google’s advertisements for regular television programming fetched them meager returns.

“I think this is going to be the biggest improvement to television since colour,” The Telegraph quoted Intel CEO Paul Otellini as saying.

At the demo session, the company showed how one can conduct searches for online videos and other content through a drop box displayed at the top corner of the TV screen.

Viewers can also check the thumbnail views of a game score and can make search requests by speaking into a remote that runs on Google”s Android operating system.

Although the concept may be baffling to customers at first, it has immense potential to take the market by storm by making Internet TV simpler and more appealing.

Sony will manufacture the TVs, while Intel will provide the microprocessors. Google will develop the software, including Android and the company”s Chrome Web browser. Logitech will supply a special remote control and wireless keyboard. (ANI)

Monitoring Mobile Content, Applications and Services

– Enhanced for Smartphones, Mobile Device Perspective 4.0 Provides 24×7
Monitoring on Leading Devices Including the Apple iPhone, Android G1, BlackBerry
Curve and Nokia N95

– New Add-On Feature, Mobile Device Perspective Interactive (MDPi), Provides
Real-Time Interactive Access to Smartphones in Remote Locations for
Troubleshooting and Validating the Performance of Mobile Applications in Order
to Improve the End User Experience

– MDP is Available on Keynote`s On-Demand Test & Mesurement Network and for
Private Test & Measurment Networks for Dedicated Use
SAN MATEO, Calif.–(Business Wire)–
Keynote Systems (NASDAQ:KEYN), the global leader in on-demand mobile and
Internet test & measurement solutions for continuously improving the online
experience, today announced Keynote Mobile Device Perspective 4.0, a complete
solution for mobile application monitoring and on-demand troubleshooting.

Today`s smartphone users customize their devices with downloadable applications
that provide access to the information and services they require most. And
enterprises rolling out new smartphone applications as part of their business
strategy need assurance that end-users can quickly and reliably access their
content. When service fails, the smartphone application is out of business.

With the release of Mobile Device Perspective 4.0, Keynote has added more
smartphones to its on-demand global test and measurement network and included a
powerful new add-on option called Mobile Device Perspective interactive (MDPi).
MDPi provides real-time desktop access to smartphones in remote locations for
interactive troubleshooting and diagnosing issues encountered while monitoring
mobile applications with MDP. With MDPi mobile operations and development teams
can interact with their mobile applications on the smartphone, get real-time,
instantaneous feedback of the LCD screen, as well as save and share results to
collaborate across teams.

Large organizations have an option to choose from a single private device or
multiple devices, at a fixed monthly fee, which can be accessed only by their
internal teams or choose Keynote`s shared device infrastructure, at an hourly
use fee, that Keynote has deployed for shared use between all customers. MDPi
provide users with pixel-perfect rendering of what is happening on remote
smartphones without any degradation.

With Mobile Device Perspective 4.0, users have access to a complete solution
that can remotely monitor the performance of mobile content, applications and
services, as well as provide real-time desktop access to smartphones in remote
locations for troubleshooting and diagnosing performance issues. With the
release of MDP 4.0 and the introduction of MDPi, enterprises are now able to
access the latest smartphones such as the Apple iPhone, Android G1, Nokia N95,
BlackBerry Curve and more.

“The explosion of smartphones and mobile applications has created a performance
monitoring nightmare for businesses developing mobile content and applications,”
said Carl Howe, director, consumer research for Yankee Group. “Businesses have
little time to monitor, troubleshoot and fix problems with their mobile apps to
avoid bad customer experiences. Hosted services such as Keynote`s allow
businesses to monitor the mobile application performance as seen by an end-user
and to troubleshoot smartphone performance issues from their desktops.
Timesaving services such as these can help IT operations teams improve mobile
app performance and reduce downtime.”

“With the enhancements to Mobile Device Perspective customers are now able to
conduct on-demand interactive troubleshooting with additional remote devices
hosted in the same global locations,” said Vik Chaudhary, vice president of
product management and corporate development at Keynote. “Mobile Device
Perspective interactive (MDPi) allows the user to interact with popular
smartphones from the desktop for real-time access. Immediate access to a popular
device is invaluable for operations professionals who are troubleshooting an
issue from a remote location. MDPi provides unsurpassed screen resolution and
virtually no latency while simultaneously allowing users to perform the
cutting-edge touch-screen features common on today`s smartphones. MDPi is also
the ideal introduction for our customers who simply wish to experience the rich
capabilities of Keynote`s real device monitoring platform,” continued Mr.
Chaudhary.

Prior to the launch of Mobile Device Perspective 4.0, mobile enterprises
interested in monitoring their mobile content, services and applications had
very few options available to them. Many of these enterprises manage large
libraries of smartphones accompanied by a similarly large staff necessary to run
through extensive testing cases. Other companies have used developer platforms
built for the feature phone and not designed for performance monitoring. These
other testing platforms lack the performance, screen resolution, features and
collaboration tools needed by the enterprise user. By optimizing monitoring with
tomorrow’s smartphone in mind, Mobile Device Perspective 4.0 becomes the leading
enterprise tool for monitoring mission-critical mobile applications and
services.

Who Will Use MDP and MDPi?

The target user for Mobile Device Perspective 4.0 and add-on feature Mobile
Device Perspective interactive (MDPi) include the following:

* Network Operations Center and Customer Support Personnel- Network operations
centers and customer support teams often need the ability to replicate issues
that are seen at the operations center or experienced by their customers. They
require access to remote devices connected to network operators so they can
replicate the issue and check its impact on other core applications and
services.
* Mobile Business Unit Owners and Managers- Most enterprise companies have
dedicated mobile business units that are responsible for the start-to-end
execution of their strategy to go mobile. Mobile Device Perspective 4.0 provides
them with a platform to monitor and troubleshoot problems with their content,
applications and services on their target devices.
* Mobile Enablers- These companies mobilize regular Web/rich media content and
enable companies to go mobile. Mobile Device Perspective 4.0 provides them with
quick access to content so they can quickly investigate issues when something
goes wrong.
* Operators/Device OEMs- Every operator and device OEM has a device
certification team that is responsible for certifying devices based on testing
mobile content and applications.

How MDP and MDPi Work–

Mobile Device Perspective (MDP) 4.0 is a cost-efficient mobile solution for
performance monitoring and troubleshooting of mobile content, applications and
services. From any desktop with an Internet connection MDP can provide continual
insight, supporting all popular smartphones.

And with Mobile Device Perspective interactive (MDPi), the user can control
these devices as if they were in their own hands. With a simple USB cable, MDPi
users can immediately upload mobile applications from their desktop to a remote
device to begin interacting with the device-resident application. MDPi delivers
lightning fast interaction, superior screen resolution, and can use the advanced
features of the latest wireless devices such as swiping, pinching, multi-tap,
accelerometer rotation and much more. MDPi makes it easy to save results to the
desktop creating a central repository that can be shared with coworkers.
Operations, QA teams and managers get quick access to results. MDPi also lets
users simultaneously access as many devices as they choose, enabling them to
test more in less time.

MDPi also allows users to easily enter any text (characters and symbols)
directly by typing on the keyboard. MDPi sports a simple and easy-to-understand
interface that can be used by any team. The intuitive icons are optimized to
perform tasks with the fewest number of clicks.

MDP 4.0 provides access to popular smartphones to monitor mobile content,
applications and services. For interactive diagnostics MDPi users can control
devices in real-time and receive instantaneous feedback of the LCD screen right
on their desktop. MDPi provides users with a pixel-perfect LCD screen on their
desktops by capturing the entire LCD screen without any degradation, including
smartphones with high resolution LCD screens.

MDPi provides access to the latest smartphones to troubleshoot a slew of
different applications including: email, messaging (SMS and MMS), WAP sites,
HTML sites, games, native applications, streaming audio and video, mobile TV,
LBS/maps.

MDPi provides comprehensive support for all hardware functions of the device
enabling the tester to do anything that their end-user can do on the device
including: touch screen: multi-tap, pinching, swiping, accelerometer, mute,
power on/off, clamshell open/close, backlights, vibration, volume increase,
hardware compass, camera.

Google phone finally in India

NEW DELHI: Taiwanese cellphone maker HTC is all set to launch G2, or the second generation premier Google phone that runs on Google’s Android op
erating system, in India soon. It is likely to be priced between Rs 26,000 to 28,000.

The company is planning to sell the unlocked G2 Android phone through a large telecom service provider, most likely Airtel, according to sources.

However, it has no immediate plans to retail the same through Vodafone with which it has a tie-up to sell G1 and G2 in most other regions, including the entire Europe.

The phone is likely to be bundled by the telco with talk time, data plans, microSD card for storage and other offers which will make it a compelling buy for the consumer. But it being unlocked means that users on other networks too will be able to lay their hands upon the handset.

Android is based on the open source platform for mobile devices. Using these smart phones, a user can download a wide number of utilities and productivity applications from Android App Store, both priced and for free. For those who swear by Google’s apps, the phone is a good buy.

HTC partnered with T-Mobile and Google in the US to launch T-Mobile G1 in September 2008, followed by G2 recently. G1 never made it to the Indian market although T-Mobile claimed to have sold over a million pieces in the US. The phone, however, has been available in the grey market for around Rs 18-19,000.

The phone is being launched in India by HTC at a time when there are already a number of other smart touchphones vying for attention, including Blackberry Bold and Nokia N97 and its own Touch Diamond 2.

Branded as myTouch by T-Mobile in the US, G2 has the same hardware design as the Google Ion, which is also known as the HTC Magic. The device was introduced at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February and is now being sold by Vodafone in various markets around the world.

It is thinner than the G1 and slightly smaller than Apple’s iPhone. But it features a large 3.2-inch tactile touch screen with a resolution of 320 x480 pixels and no physical keyboard. The phone offers network support for 3G and Wi-Fi.

It also comes with 512 MB internal memory and has a microSD slot for external storage.

Apple owners call in 1 billion downloads for iPhone

San Francisco – Owners of Apple’s popular iPhones have downloaded over 1 billion applications for the must-have smartphones, Apple said Friday.

The landmark download was reached just nine months after Apple launched the App Store which allows users of the iPhone to download new programs for their devices. The program has proved so popular that thousands of companies and individuals are believed to be writing applications for the phone, which Apple then distributes via the online marketplace.

According to Apple over 35,000 separate applications, many of them free, are currently available over the online marketplace.

“The revolutionary App Store has been a phenomenal hit with iPhone and iPod touch users around the world, and we’d like to thank our customers and developers for helping us achieve the astonishing milestone of one billion apps downloaded,” said Apple executive Philip Schiller. “In nine months, the App Store has completely revolutionized the mobile industry and this is only the beginning.”

The announcement coincided with reports of disappointing sales for one of the iPhone’s most highly touted competitors in the US.

T-Mobile USA announced that it has sold 1 million units of the G-1 device – the first smartphone to run Google’s Android operating system. The phone took six months to reach that sales point. In contrast, the Apple’s iPhone 3G sold 1 million units on its launch weekend.(dpa)
