Minsk sends delegation to Moscow for crisis gas talks

June 20 (Reuters) – Belarus said it was sending a delegation to Moscow on Sunday for emergency talks with Russian gas giant Gazprom (GAZP.MM) after the two failed to resolve a price row that has raised the spectre for European gas cuts. Russia has said it will cut 85 percent of gas supplies to transit country Belarus if its ex-Soviet neighbour fails to pay $192 million in debt to Gazprom, which Minsk denies it owns.

“The delegation leaves tonight for talks on Monday…the issue of debt will be discussed,” Belarussian Deputy Energy Minister Eduard Tovpenets told Reuters.

Exiled Kyrgyz leader Bakiyev denies role in riots

June 13 (Reuters) – Exiled former Kyrgyz president Kurmanbek Bakiyev denied on Sunday any involvement in a wave of ethnic violence in the south of Kyrgyzstan that has killed at least 82 people.

Bakiyev said in a statement that reports of his involvement were “shameless lies” and that the interim government that replaced him after an uprising in April were proving incapable of quelling the unrest.

Belarus parliament okays Belaruskali privatisation

June 10 (Reuters) – The parliament of Belarus on Thursday voted to lift restrictions on privatisation of Belaruskali, one of the world’s top producers of potash.

Basic Materials

State-owned Belaruskali owns 50 percent of the Belarussian Potash Co, a joint venture with Russian miner Uralkali (URKA.MM) (URKAq.L) that controls about 30 percent of the world potash market.

In May, Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko said Belarus may sell a minority stake in Belaruskali, but will retain a controlling stake. [ID:nLDE6432CB] (Reporting by Andrei Makhovsky, writing by Dmitry Zhdannikov; editing by Maria Kiselyova)

Russia to build world’s first fifth-generation combat, invisible helicopter

Moscow, May 19 (ANI): Russia is planning to build the world’s first fifth-generation combat helicopter which would be able to attack fighter jets and be invisible to radars, analysts have said

“We are working on the concept of the fifth-generation combat helicopter,” Russian daily Gazeta quoted Russian Helicopters CEO, Andrei Shibitov, as saying.

Shibitov did not specify the characteristics of the helicopter, but said the company was going to spend some one billion dollars on the project, with more investment expected to be allocated from the state budget.

First deputy head of the Russian Academy of Geopolitical Problems, Konstantin Sivkov, told the paper that fifth-generation combat helicopters have never been created before, although the US recently began working on a similar project.

He said criteria for a fifth-generation combat helicopter are that it must be radar invisible, have an extended flying range, be equipped with an intellectual arms control system, be able to combat fighter jets (existing helicopters are generally only intended to hit ground-based targets) and reach a speed of up to 500-600 km/h (310-370 mph).

The project cannot proceed, however, unless the government backs it.

“If the government does not sign a contract, the idea will die on the vine,” head of the Russian Academy of Geopolitical Problems Leonid Ivashov told Gazeta.

Ivashov said that with sufficient investment and good organization the new helicopter could be built within five years. Otherwise, the project may drag on for 20-30 years. (ANI)

China’s Xi promises Belarus $1 billion in loans

China will loan the former Soviet republic of Belarus $1 billion on favourable terms, the man widely seen as China’s next leader told Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko on Wednesday.

“China has taken a decision to grant Belarus favorable credits of $1 billion, which will be used for projects the nations have agreed upon,” Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said at a meeting with Lukashenko.

Xi, seen as the frontrunner to succeed President Hu Jintao in 2013, gave no more details.

Lukashenko on Wednesday offered to give Chinese companies wider access to the $50 billion economy of Belarus, which exports potash to China.

Putin writes column on retaining and firing people

Moscow, May 27 (ANI): Employers wanting to know when and how to retain or fire their employees, should contact Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

Turning his hand to writing, Putin’s first ever column for a Russian media outlet will be published on Friday, entitled “Why it’s hard to fire people”.

Written for a niche monthly magazine, Russian Pioneer, it reads as the first admission by Putin of the scale of infighting that raged in the Kremlin during his eight years as president.

“Conflicts within a team, especially within a big team, always arise,” writes Mr Putin, in extracts leaked to a Russian news agency.

“This happens every minute, every second – simply because between people there are always clashes of interest.”

Putin actually played out a delicate balancing act to stop two groups from descending into all-out war.

The scuffles are rarely aired in public and Putin himself has not made direct reference to them before. But now he seems to confirm the most radical of interpretations.

“I can say honestly that while I was president, if I hadn’t interfered in certain situations, in Russia there would long ago ceased to have been a government.”

The magazine’s editor Andrei Kolesnikov said he had not had to make any corrections as the article was written in excellent Russian, albeit with Putin’s famous idiosyncratic expressions in abundance.

For any corporate hotshots looking for tips on how to get rid of underachieving employees in times of economic crisis, the article lays out the “Putin method” of firing, which – on paper at least – sounds surprisingly humane.

“Sometimes from outside it seems like someone should simply be swept aside with a broom, but I can assure you that it’s not always like this. You should never bad-mouth someone behind their back, and it’s impermissible to fire somebody and toss them aside just because somebody has told you something bad about them,” The Telegraph quotes Putin, as saying.

Putin claims that he always gives people the right to fight their corner. (ANI)

Arshavin deals falls through – reports

Arshavin deals falls through - reportsLondon – Andrei Arshavin’s proposed transfer from Zenit St Petersburg to Arsenal fell through on Monday morning, according to Sky Sports News.

The Russian playmaker was in London to complete his move before the transfer window closes on Monday evening.

But sources suggest he left his Hertfordshire hotel a little after 9 a. m. (0900 GMT) to return to Russia after it became clear that Arsenal could not meet his salary demands.

It is understood, though, that the airport he was making for is closed because of snow.

Both Arsenal and Zenit confirm that no agreement had been reached as to a fee. (dpa)

Russian football star Arshavin joins Arsenal

London, Feb.3 (ANI): Russian football star Andrei Arshavin has finally joined Arsenal for 15 million pounds.

The Russian, 27, mercifully brought football’s longest-running saga to an end when he signed a 70,000-pound-a-week contract at the Emirates to 2012.
Arshavin made it in the nick of time, just minutes before the transfer window slammed shut, reports The Sun.
Alexei Petrov, a spokesman for Zenit St Petersburg, said: “The deal was signed for three years, all financial details will be disclosed tomorrow.”

Arshavin was so desperate to complete his move that he hired a private jet to fly him from Russia to London on Sunday night. And it was a good job he planned ahead because of the heavy snow which cut off London’s airports yesterday.

Arshavin arrived in England before a fee with Zenit was even agreed.

But the Russians blinked first, reluctantly agreeing to Arsenal’s 12 million pound offer with add-ons taking the deal to a maximum 15 million pounds. (ANI)

Arsenal may sign Russia’s Arshavin for 10 million pounds

London, Jan.7 (ANI): Arsene Wenger-coached Arsenal football club is on the verge of signing Euro 2008 star Andrei Arshavin for 10 million pounds.

The 27-year-old Russian playmaker is in London for talks with Gunners chiefs at the Landmark Hotel. His wife Yulia is accompanying him.

Wenger is ready to offer Arshavin a three-year deal as his club Zenit St Petersburg concede they can no longer command the unrealistic 20 million pound they had been demanding with the player’s desperation to quit the club so well documented.

Arshavin has even threatened to buy himself out of his contract earlier this week because Zenit wanted so much for him even though he is not eligible for the latter stages of the Champions League.

The Mirror quoted Arshavin’s agent Dennis Lachter as saying: “It’s like that famous movie ‘show me the money’ (Jerry Maguire). It’s just like that. The appetite of Zenit is huge. If they realize times have changed then the Andrei move (to Arsenal) could be very possible.”

Signing Arshavin will finally appease frustrated Arsenal fans who had been angered by Wenger’s stubborn loyalty to his youngsters and his refusal to dip into the millions available to him at the Emirates. (ANI)
