opportunities, suggesting the overall industry is on a path of gradual recovery.

previous month. Opportunities are now up 12 percent compared to June 2009 and
their highest level since February 2009.

Among industry sectors, production, manufacturing maintenance and repair
exhibited the sharpest monthly increase, whilst transport, post and logistics

overall upswing in European industrial activity and transport.

we are on the path to gradual recovery,” commented Andrea Bertone, head of

that are emerging throughout the year.”

And now, Madonna has picked D”Arcy to take on the role of King Edward.

Champion Kuznetsova back from brink to reach third round

Reigning champion Svetlana Kuznetsova held on by her fingernails at the French Open on Wednesday, saving four match points against Germany’s Andrea Petkovic to keep alive her hopes of defending the title.

The Russian sixth seed was on the brink when Petkovic served at 5-4, 40-0 in the second set of a rain-interrupted scrap on Court One but survived to win 4-6 7-5 6-4.

Petkovic’s nerves got the better of her as she wasted all her match points with unforced errors and Kuznetsova, who had been woefully off from, took full advantage.

Kuznetsova also wobbled serving at 5-3 in the decider as Petkovic broke back but sealed victory on her fourth match point in the next game when her opponent drilled a backhand long.

Mother reliving son’s horrific work death

A coronial inquest has started into the workplace death of a teenage apprentice in Adelaide.

Daniel Madeley, 18, was operating a horizontal borer at Diemould Tooling in 2004 when his dustcoat caught in a spindle and he was sucked into the machine.

He suffered horrific injuries and died the next day.

The company pleaded guilty in the Industrial Court, which meant no witnesses were called.

Mr Madeley’s mother Andrea says the coronial inquest allows those witnesses to be heard and she has been given permission to cross-examine them herself.

“Effectively through the criminal justice system you are nothing but a spectator,” she said.

“This is very different and there’s a lot of evidence to come but it is important I feel it is an opportunity that at least you can have some answers yourself rather than relying on someone else hoping they’ll get the questions asked.”

Ms Madeley hopes the coroner’s proceedings will make workplaces safer for others.

“What I’m hoping is that we’re going to see recommendations from the coroner’s court that will ultimately save lives,” she said.

The opening day of the hearing was told Daniel Madeley had been trained on the machine that killed him by another apprentice, Mark Remfrey.

Mr Remfrey told the court he was the one who pushed the emergency stop button when Mr Madeley got caught and who stayed with him until help arrived.

He believes his co-worker’s sleeve got caught as he was applying coolant to the drill bit.

Aussies ousted early in Miami

Australian pair Casey Dellacqua and Anastasia Rodionova have both suffered first round defeats at the WTA event in Miami.

Dellacqua went down 6-3, 7-5 to Russian Ekaterina Makarova while German Andrea Petkovic eliminated Rodionova 6-4, 6-2.

Meanwhile, Justine Henin cruised into the second round with a speedy 6-2, 6-2 victory over American Jill Craybas.

Former world number one Henin, who entered the tournament as a wild card, needed only 62 minutes to advance in the $4.5 million event on a bright, breezy day in Key Biscayne, Florida.

She will now face Russian Elena Dementieva, who Henin beat in the Australian Open this year en route to a runner-up finish after 16 months away from the game.

“It’s been good to be back on the courts,” said Henin, who lost in the second round at Indian Wells earlier this month.

“I didn’t live this life for almost two years, so that takes a little bit of time. I’ve worked pretty good between Indian Wells and here. Now I’m going to have a tough round, tough match. That’s what I want. So it’s going to be perfect to test myself.”

American Airlines Jet Diverts to Phoenix

PHOENIX — An American Airlines passenger jet headed from San Francisco to Miami made a precautionary landing at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport because of a generator problem.

Airline spokeswoman Andrea Huguely says the pilot of the twin-engine Boeing 767 decided to divert the plane on Tuesday afternoon because of a problem with one of two generators. Without the second generator, the pilot would have to run an auxiliary power unit.

Flight 476 was carrying 225 passengers and a crew of nine. Huguely says no injuries were reported and that passengers would be placed on a later flight.

Brit school bans sexually coloured ‘shagbands’

London, Sep 19 (ANI): A Brit primary school has banned its students form wearing coloured wristbands, after parents found out that they were called “shagbands”.

Parents of kids, attending Rayne Primary School near Braintree, Essex, discovered that each colour of the ‘shagband’ represents a different sex act.

“The children have been walking around with these rubber bands on calling them shagbands,” the Daily Star quoted mum-of-three Andrea Elward, 46, whose 10-year-old daughter studies in the school, as saying.

“My daughter said her friends had got them and could she have a set. Then she went red and giggled when she explained they were called shagbands.

“I had a word with the head and they banned them immediately,” she added. (ANI)

Mirren to star in big-screen remake of Graham Greene’s novel Brighton Rock

London, Aug 28 (ANI): Actress Dame Helen Mirren is set to star in new film Brighton Rock, adapted from Graham Greene’s classic 1939 novel of the same title.

The Oscar winner will play amateur detective Ida Arnold in the movie.

The plot revolves around teenager Pinkie, who seduces a young waitress after she stumbles on evidence linking him and his gang to a revenge killing committed by Pinkie.

Mirren will have the task cut out to find the truth behind the killing.

Rowan Joffe has written the script and will direct the film too.

And he intends to make it look as contemporary as possible.

“We’re making Brighton Rock as contemporary as we possibly can because the story feels ‘modern’. It’s too alive, too vibrant and too relevant to be contained in the late 1930s,” the BBC News quoted him as saying.

Also starring in the film, set in 1964, is Sam Riley, who will play the lead character Pinkie Brown apart from Pete Postlethwaite and Happy Go Lucky’s Andrea Riseborough.

Shooting is scheduled to start in October this year. (ANI)

Beyonce’s Vienna museum look-a-like tour was a radio prank

Washington, May 1 (ANI): After the humdrum over a look-a-like of American R and B singer Beyonce Knowles doing a VIP tour of Vienna, staff of a radio station in Austria have come forward to own up and apologize for it.

Knowles, 27, had come under fire from bosses at the Austrian capital’s Albertina art museum, after they accused her of shunning a planned visit on April 28, and sending a body double instead.

But now the incident has been revealed to be a prank set up radio station Kronehit Radio, and the museum chiefs were among hundreds of people fooled by the stunt.

Staff at the radio station had hired a Beyonce look-a-like to coincide with the singer’s Vienna concert, and they took her to various tourist attractions and famous locations in the city.

They even sent her on a shopping trip, and then phoned the Albertina posing as her management to arrange an exclusive visit.

Andrea Hilber, marketing manager at Kronehit Radio, has confirmed the station was responsible for the stunt.

“We’ll call the Albertina to say we meant no harm. It was a great museum tour,” Contactmusic quoted her as saying. (ANI)

Mel B has not talked to mum and sister for 5 months

London, Mar 29 (ANI): Former Spice Girl Mel B’s mother and sister have claimed that the singer has not talked to them since five months, blaming her hubby Stephen Belafonte for the feud.

Mel B’s mother Andrea and sister Danielle have claimed that the pop star, popular as Scary Spice, has cut all ties with them because she’s too involved with her husband and kids.

“She is wrapped up in her own little world,” the News of the World quoted them as saying.

Former Emmerdale actress Danielle said: “Mel hasn’t spoken to her own mother in months! She has a husband now so she just doesn’t find the time. He doesn’t help. To be honest, I don’t think he’s a very nice person.”

When asked whether Belafonte was a domineering character, Danielle said: “Yeah. It doesn’t help Mel’s situation.”

Mel and Stephen, both 33, married in June 2007 and renewed their wedding vows in Egypt during a four-day celebration last year.

And since then, Stephen has been at the centre of many cheating rumours.

But the mother-sister duo is angry over the silent treatment.

Andrea and Danielle are also devastated at losing contact with Mel’s kids Phoenix Chi, 10, and year-old Angel Iris.

“It’s hard not hearing from her. But I’m getting used to it now,” admitted Danielle. (ANI)

Pammie’s ‘boob popping’ fashion show

London, March 7 (ANI): Pamela Anderson gave an eyeful to those attending the Vivienne Westwood show when her boob popped out of her dress.

The actress strutted down the ramp while modelling for the designer’s 2009-2010 ‘ready-to-wear’ collection in Paris.

The busty blonde showed off different looks including a tutu-inspired outfit and a peculiar blend of tight jacket, shorts, socks and killer heels.

“We have done the casting around Pamela,” the Sun quoted co-designer and husband Andrea Kronthaler as saying.

“I think the feeling is of playgirls, but not in the bodies. It’s not like that necessarily. It’s an attitude,” he added. (ANI)

Sheryl Crow gives up defending her song writing from critics

Washington, Feb 2 (ANI): American singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow has given up defending herself from critics who accused her of having used the words from a poem for her hit song.

Crow, who had taken the words for her 1994 Grammy Award-winning song “All I Wanna Do” from a Wyn Cooper poem, says that her struggle with cancer helped her to overcome the critics’ accusations.

The singer had found Cooper’s work at a Los Angeles-area used bookstore, and inculcated the words into her song, but she insists that the poet has since received credit as a co-writer on the track and has even been awarded royalties for the song.
Crow has, in an excerpt in Andrea Buchanan’s inspirational book ‘Note to Self’, given credit to her battle with breast cancer in 2006 for helping her get over the critics accusing her of not acknowledging the poet.

“I hold no grudges against anybody for anything, and my days are better lived that way,” Contactmusic quoted her as saying. (ANI)
