Defensive Jagan in Delhi to meet Sonia

New Delhi, May 31 (IANS) Under fire for violating the party leadership’s directive and going ahead with a rally in Andhra Pradesh’s volatile Telangana region, Congress MP Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy is here hoping to meet party president Sonia Gandhi.

The Kadapa MP, whose rally last week led to violence in the Telangana region, defended himself, saying he organised it was for his father, the late chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy who died in a helicopter crash last year.

‘Whatever I’m doing is for my father. I’m sure the Congress president will understand my point,’ the MP, known as Jagan, told reporters here.

Jagan, who reached the capital Sunday to attend a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance, has sought an appointment with Gandhi and other senior party leaders, said party sources.

The central leadership of the party had asked him not to conduct the rally in Telangana in view of the tension prevailing there over the separate statehood issue.

Congress leader and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee Friday asked Jagan to call off his rally.

Defying the directive, Jagan embarked on the rally May 28, triggering violence between his supporters and opponents as he was taken into preventive custody while on his way to Mahbubabad in Warangal district.

Jagan reiterated that the rally was to console family members of those who committed suicide or died of shock following the death of his father, then chief minister, in a helicopter crash last year.

Maoists threaten supporters of bauxite mining in Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam, May 13 (ANI): Maoists in Visakhapatnam district released a letter on Wednesday explaining why they killed Somalingam, the vice-chairman of Visakhapatnam Zilla Parishad.

They said in the letter that they killed Somalingam due to the huge support he extended to bauxite mining in the area. They also warned that other political leaders who support bauxite mining would face the same fate.

Chalasani Prasad, Secretary of Viplava Rachaithala Sangham of Andhra Pradesh, an organisation supporting the Maoist movement, said that the government had no right to deprive the tribals of their livelihood and accused them of harassing the tribal people.

“Government is looting them and government is depriving them. They are playing with fire, so fire naturally burns,” said Prasad.

Prasad added that the government”s industrialization policy is a false policy and that the country belongs to its people.

Calling the Central government “fascist” and “brutal”, Prasad demanded that Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and Home Minister P Chidambaram should visit the area and see how tribals live.

“What will happen if bauxite is taken out from there? The entire Andhra will become dry like the Sahara desert. Do you like it? We forecast it because we see the problem for the people, and government is sitting in their AC (air-conditioned) rooms at Delhi. They don”t know how people live in India,” he said.

In a joint operation of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Combat Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) on Sunday, eight hideouts of Maoists were destroyed in Dhakanchuan jungle of Gaya district.

One of the hideouts was their manufacturing unit of arms and ammunitions.

The joint forces also seized arms, detonators, hydrogen lights, water tanks, electric wires and daily items used by the Maoists.

According to the CRPF personnel, the Maoists were using these hideouts as training camps. The cache of arms and their belongings were seized from only six hideouts.

“We have destroyed many caves of theirs but we have received this huge cache from only six caves. These caves here are their hideouts, where they used to stay along with their daily use products,” said Vijay Kumar, Commandant, 159 battalion of CRPF.

Kolkata, Mar 27 (ANI): Scores of Communists took to the streets in Kolkata on Friday to protest against the Central Government”s anti-Maoist ”Green Hunt” operation.

Gathering under the banner of the ”Struggling Left Consolidation”, the protestors took part in a rally that demanded the suspension of ”Operation Green Hunt”.

“We are opposing it because this is aggression against the people,” said Communist Party of India (Marxist-Lenin) General Secretary Santosh Rana.

“The government wants to hand over a large area of land and forest and what-not to multinationals and, for that purpose, it is being launched. So, we are opposing it,” Rana added.

Earlier this week, the Maoists had called for a 48-hour shutdown in the states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh, and three districts of Maharashtra, protesting against the Union Government”s operation.

Most Maoist rebels have ignored repeated calls from the government to renounce violence and negotiate. Instead, they have stepped up their attacks in recent months, prompting the government to go after them in a concerted manner.

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram had on February 12 defended the use of force against the Maoists, saying it was the legitimate right of the government to establish law and order, build infrastructure and set up welfare measures.

He expressed confidence that the Centre would be able to get rid of the Maoist menace over the next four years. Once the areas are cleared of Maoist elements, development work would be pursued expeditiously.

Referring to a reported offer of talks made by the Maoists through the media recently, Chidambaram said, “Why aren”t the Maoists making a simple statement that we abjure violence?” (ANI)
