Malaysian man becomes first amputee to climb Mount Kinabalu

Petaling Jaya (Malaysia), May 20(ANI): A 25-year-old Malaysian man has got into the Malaysia Book of Records for becoming the first amputee to climb Mount Kinabalu.

Melvin Tong, who lost his right leg to a cancerous tumour eight years ago, climbed Mount Kinabalu from April 18 to 22 to raise awareness of child abuse.

A certificate honouring Tong’s mountain-climbing milestone was presented to him by Malaysia Book of Records’ founder and Managing Director, Danny Ooi.

“He made the country proud by being the first amputee to climb Mount Kinabalu,” The Star quoted Ooi, as saying.

Meanwhile, Tong said he was honoured to receive the award and hoped his achievement would inspire other people to achieve their dream.

“We all can do something to bring about change,” Tong said.

Mount Kinabalu is the fourth tallest mountain in the Malay Archipelago after Indonesian Papua’s Puncak Jaya, Puncak Trikora and Puncak Mandala. (ANI)

Scientists develop robotic hand that ‘restores sense of touch’

London, Sept 10 (ANI): The first robotic hand to give amputees a sense of touch has been created by Swedish scientists.

When pressed against an object the 40 sensors in the Smarthand get activated. It also has four motors, which move the thumb and fingers.

They stimulate nerves in the arm to activate the appropriate part of the brain. This allows patients to feel objects they are holding, reports Sky News.

“It’s a feeling I have not had in a long time,” said Robin af Ekenstam, the first amputee to try the hand.

“When I grab something tightly I can feel it in the fingertips. It’s strange since I don’t have them any more! It’s amazing,” he added.

The motors are connected to nerves in the arm that once moved Robin’s real digits. Thanks to the “hand”, he’s able to pick up a plastic water bottle, without crushing it, and pour himself a drink.

Professor Goran Lundborg, a surgeon at Malmo University Hospital, said the artificial hand was a significant advance.

“If you find the right spot the correct areas of the brain cortex will be activated. If you put pressure on the index finger of the artificial hand then the index finger area of the brain will be activated,” he said.

The research is funded by the European Commission. (ANI)

New gen of POWER KNEE can help amputees walk again

Washington, April 22 (ANI): Ossur, a global leader in non-invasive orthopaedics, has developed second generation of the POWER KNEE, the first technology to use sensors, power, artificial intelligence and actuators to provide amputees with the ability to walk naturally and safely without even thinking about it.

In 2006, working in partnership with Victhom Human Bionics, Ossur introduced the POWER KNEE, representing the most advanced technology of its kind with the ability to replace lost muscle function and provide increased safety.

Used mostly within the Department of Defense and the Veterans Healthcare Administration, the POWER KNEE marked a new milestone in amputee mobility, safety and advancing natural motion through a powered gait process.

After three years, working closely with Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) and in collaboration with partner Victhom Human Bionics, the next generation of the POWER KNEE has been developed.

“The second generation is smaller, sleeker, quieter, lighter and is expected to become widely used by both unilateral and dual amputees,” said Lt. Col. (Dr.) Paul F. Pasquina, chief, Integrated Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at Walter Reed and the National Naval Medical Center, according to Inside Nova.

Lieutenant Colonel Greg Gadson has become the first person in the world to receive the commercially-ready prosthetic knees and will soon be followed by other patients at WRAMC. (ANI)
