Wikimedia starts purging pornography following media expose

Washington, May 8 (ANI): Wikimedia, Wikipedia’s parent company, has started an online purging activity to get rid of sexually explicit content on the website following a report by an American TV news network.

The move followed a report by FoxNews.com, which asked a dozen donor companies, including Google, Microsoft””s Bing, Yahoo!, Open Society Institute, Ford Foundation, Best Buy, USA Networks and Craigslist Foundation, if they were aware of the highly pornographic material that was present on the website.

Wikipedia, an online encyclopaedia, is easily accessible to the scores of children across the world. The website could easily provide access to such pictures – including close-ups of genitalia and people having sex and masturbating. There””s even a “nude children” category.

“We have had a problem with images being placed into inappropriate categories, so that viewers were exposed in unexpected ways to sexual content. Image categorization should be done in such a way that readers are not exposed unexpectedly to content that may be offensive,” FoxNews.com quoted Jimmy Wales, the president of the Wikimedia Foundation, as writing in a post.

“I expect the board to issue a statement within a few days offering a general philosophical support for the serious enforcement of policy on this issue. The Board normally does not get involved with detailed content decisions; I don””t expect that to change,” he wrote elsewhere.

A report by FoxNews.com revealed that Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger had sent a letter to the FBI regarding the pornographic material being posted on the website.

The FBI has not commented on whether it will pursue an investigation.

Although the purging process is in full flow, there are still pictures that are available on the website, marked for deletion.

Wales himself marked hundreds of images for deletion, all of which involved graphic images of sex acts. (ANI)

Infidelity on the rise Down Under, confirms dating websites

Sydney, May 3 (ANI): Two new dating websites have confirmed that infidelity is on the rise in Australia, with more 293000 people signing up for their services.

More than 280,000 people, 36 percent of them women, have signed up to ashleymadison.com since it was launched three weeks ago, and about 13,000 people have visited gleeden.com in its first week.

They follow the basic structure of most dating sites, where members publish profiles outlining their interests, passions and sexual proclivities.

But instead of singles, the pay-to-join sites specifically cater for married people looking for secret dalliances or long-term affairs.

“It is not in anyone”s DNA to stay with the same person,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted ashleymadison.com founder Noel Biderman as saying.

“So this notion that [our site is] generating this kind of behaviour is wrong,” he said.

American TV host Dr Phil McGraw agrees. Last week, the clinical psychologist known as Dr Phil told female viewers how to tell if their man would cheat on them.

He said men with a ring finger longer than their index finger have higher testosterone levels and were more likely to cheat. He also said that men with a short gene, the vasopressin receptor gene, were predisposed to infidelity.

But University of Sydney professor of medicine and molecular genetics Ron Trent said proving that a “cheating gene” existed would be difficult.

“There may be some sort of connection but these are complex traits and a lot of these situations involve a combination of genes and environmental factors,” Dr Trent said.

“For one, we cannot prove infidelity runs in families,” he explained.

Running an adultery website has not made Biderman insecure about his marriage but it has made him more pragmatic.

“It has challenged the paradigm I grew up with, that you should just get married. But there is more diversity than that out there,” he said.

NSW Family First representative the Reverend Gordon Moyes said the popularity of such sites was disappointing, if not surprising.

“Infidelity solves nothing. It is not surprising that there are significant numbers of people who think they can get out of their rather boring malaise within their existing marriage by having an affair,” Moyes said.

“However, you only have to read the celebrity pages to realise that the other partner often responds badly,” he stated.

Biderman said the Australian site had higher levels of female participation than sites in the US and Britain.

“Women who use the service haven”t been paid attention to, these women who were once such objects of desire that someone married them,” he said.

University of Sydney behavioural scientist Dr Di Sansom said some people rediscovered the love they felt for their spouse after partaking in an affair.

“They find it is not as fulfilling as their marriage and so they end it,” he revealed.

Biderman said his website was allowing more than 5.8 million people internationally to test the waters.

“It is hard for people to shed that idea of monogamy. When they are tired of vanilla, they want to try different flavours,” he added. (ANI)

Gerrard passionate about American TV show Glee

London, Apr 30 (ANI): Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard has become a fan of the TV show “This side of Pineapple Dance Studios – Glee”. And his first exposure to the song and dance spectacular came courtesy his wife

The American series, which is broadcast on Channel 4, follows the ups and down of a High School Glee club, a choir that specialises in singing popular songs rather than classical works.

Alex Curran insisted her husband watch it with her when it was first aired and now he can’t get enough of it.

“Stevie has developed quite a passion for Glee. Alex loves it and made Steven watch it with her. At first he was always moaning about it as it wasn’t his kind of show.

“If he had his way he would have the footie on 24/7. But after a bit of perseverance from the missus now Stevie doesn’t miss an episode,” The Sun quoted a friend of the England ace, as saying.

“He can’t get enough of it. It’s all a bit cheesy but Stevie finds it funny, he has a good laugh about it. Even when he misses the show Alex always has it on Sky Plus so Stevie can catch up,” the friend revealed.

Such dedication is also a tactical masterstroke from the midfielder. “It has scored him major bonus points with the wife, so when he fancies watching a bit of Sky Sports Alex doesn’t mind,” the friend said. (ANI)

Explicit US TV show casts strippers as extras

Wellington, September 13 (ANI): Producers of ‘Spartacus: Blood and Sand’, promoted in trailers as “the boldest show on television”, have cast strippers as extras.

The American TV production, that stars Kiwi actors Lucy Lawless, Guy Parker and Manu Bennett, previously raised eyebrows in the local film industry for its raunchiness, including explicit orgies and naked battle scenes in bath houses.

Extras through Go Wild Adult Entertainment, a company which supplies erotic dancers and jelly wrestlers, were said to have been hired, reports Stuff.co.nz.

Auckland stripper Ryan Marston said nearly 20 male and female local strippers were employed to work on the series, based on Spartacus, a Roman gladiator, who later became the leader of a major slave uprising against the Roman Republic.

The producers cast strippers since many actors were unaccustomed to simulating sex and spending long hours naked on set. (ANI)

Ant and Dec horrified that audience were paid to laugh at their jokes

London, Aug 25 (ANI): Brit comedy duo Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, better know as Ant and Dec, have revealed that they were horrified to find out that an audience in the US was paid to laugh at their jokes.

American TV chiefs were desperate for the British unknowns to become instant hits with their version of You Bet, known as Wanna Bet, and so they paid audience members each 15 dollars an hour to cheer and laugh.

“We were virtual unknowns but we walked out to thunderous applause on the first night,” the Daily Star quoted Dec, 33, as telling Q magazine.

“The show went unbelievably well and afterwards we said to the producer: ‘What an incredible audience.’

“And he said: ‘Yeah, it’s amazing what you can get for 15 dollars an hour.’ They paid the audience to be there for three hours,” he said.

Ant, also 33, added: “We saw them afterwards, queuing up for America’s Got Talent.” (ANI)

‘Americans can’t understand Cheryl Cole’s Geordian accent’

London, July 10 (ANI): Cheryl Cole’s alleged plans to appear on US version of talent show X-Factor may suffer a setback due to her thick Geordian accent which Americans seem to fail to understand.

TV mogul Simon Cowell is reportedly keen on the singer to front the show but American TV bosses are worried about her strong accent.

In fact, NBC executives flew to Manchester to watch the Newcastle-born in action at the live auditions.

They were reportedly satisfied with everything except the harder edges of her North East tones.

“They were bowled over by Cheryl and thought she was sassy, smart, charismatic and beautiful. There was just one small problem – they couldn’t make head nor tail of her Geordie accent,” The Mirror quoted a source as saying.

The source said: “She was at her best at the weekend – witty, empathetic and really encouraging to some of the acts.

“But while her accent isn’t that thick, the Americans really seemed to struggle with it.”

There is also news that the Girls Aloud singer might take elocution lessons to solve the problem.

The source added: “Simon jokingly offered to pay for elocution lessons for her but, seriously, that may be the route she has to take if she is really considering breaking into television over there.”

TV chiefs have also taken copies of last year’s show back to America to test if audiences in US understand Cheryl talk. (ANI)

Jordan King accuses US of engaging in torture

Washington, Apr.25 (ANI): Jordan’s King Abdullah II has said in an American TV interview that there is enough evidence available to suggest that the United States had engaged in torture, a topic that has turned into a political firestorm since the release last week of Bush-era interrogation memos.

Abdullah, when asked in an interview with NBC News if he thought the U.S. had tortured, was quoted by Fox News as saying such accounts suggest “that is the case,” calling the CIA’s controversial interrogation techniques “illegal ways of dealing with detainees.”

“But there is still a major battle out there,” he said, adding that he thought President Obama was making improvements to the American legal system.

The interview, to air Sunday on “Meet the Press,” comes after Abdullah called on the United States to support peace between Israel and the Palestinians, and both sides are already testing President Barack Obama’s resolve.

Abdullah, who talked Mid East peace with Obama at the White House earlier in the week, said the United States should have a peace plan “for 2009 and beyond,” in which negotiations produce clear and quick results.

“Now is the time for the United States to lead,” Abdullah said. He warned that time is running out to establish a viable independent Palestinian state alongside Israel. That is the goal all sides have embraced and the outline of a deal is clear, but it will take determination and a push from Washington to make it happen, Abdullah said in an address at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

“The status quo is simply untenable,” Abdullah said.

The memos released last week by the Obama administration are from 2002 and 2005 and detail legal justification for the CIA’s interrogation techniques used on terror suspects after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on New York City and the Pentagon.

Obama plans to invite the Israeli, Palestinian and Egyptian leaders to the White House in the coming weeks for separate discussions on Middle East peace.

Abdullah welcomed what he called early signals from Obama that he will make Middle East peace a priority.

The White House named a special peace envoy but has made no bold moves three months into Obama’s term and during a period of political upheaval in Israel. (ANI)

Biden bearing brunt of Obama’s ‘non-jokability’!

Chicago, Apr 19 (ANI): Since US President Barack Obama is hard to mock, jesters are turning their aim to Vice President Joe Biden.

If you’re wondering why Obama is “non-jokeable”, well it could be that jokers are reluctant to riff on a man they admire, or he’s simply a “no-joke making” human being.

“As a comedian, I’m gonna miss President Bush. Because Barack Obama is not easy to do jokes about. He doesn’t give you a lot to go on. This is why God gave us Joe Biden,” The Chicago Sun-Times quoted American TV host Jay Leno, as saying.

According to David Letterman, Biden’s most important responsibility is to pick up Obama’s daughters at school.

As far as Craig Ferguson is concerned, the Scottish-American television host says Obama gave Biden 12 cupcakes for the vice president’s birthday – “which is a smart gift to give Biden because when his mouth is full of cupcakes he can’t say anything stupid.”

Former Second City member Jason Sudeikis, on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” portrayed Biden as, in the words of one critic, “a contained lunatic.”

Sudeikis has said he developed his impersonation by “watching a lot of YouTube,” but mainly his impersonation is “all teeth.” (ANI)
