Lee Dewyze beats Bowersox in ‘American Idol’ upset

Dark horse Lee DeWyze was crowned “American Idol” on Wednesday, beating front-runner Crystal Bowersox in an upset result on America’s most-watched television show.

DeWyze, 24, won the coveted title and a recording contract after millions of Americans cast their votes for the bluesy guitarist despite what “Idol” judges had deemed a better showing by Bowersox in Tuesday’s performance finale.

“I have never been happier in my life,” said an emotional DeWyze, who worked in a Chicago paint shop before auditioning for the Fox TV singing contest a year ago.

Initially shy and ill at ease, he blossomed in the later rounds and emerged as a serious threat to rocker and single mom Bowersox after he delivered an emotional version of the Leonard Cohen classic “Hallelujah” in the semi-final last week.

On Tuesday, “Idol” judges all but anointed Bowersox the winner. Outgoing judge Simon Cowell described her final song, “Up to the Mountain” as “outstanding.”

But Americans felt differently and after the counting of votes cast by text and telephone, DeWyze was pronounced the winner at the end of a two-hour finale that featured performances by Christina Aguilera, Janet Jackson and Joe Cocker.

Past “Idols” — as well as former judge Paula Abdul — returned to give Cowell an emotional send-off on his last appearance on the show. The British music executive is leaving to launch a U.S. version of his “The X-Factor” talent show on Fox in the fall of 2011.

DeWyze’s cover version of U2′s hit “Beautiful Day” will be released as his first single. His debut album, on a Sony Music Entertainment record label, will likely follow in the fall.

Now in its 9th season, “American Idol” is still America’s most popular TV show, but has seen audiences slip by about 9 percent this year to an average 23.9 million viewers per episode.

Simon Cowell’s shows are ‘dangerous’ and ‘cruel’, says Annie Lennox

London, May 11 (ANI): Oscar-winning singer Annie Lennox has blasted Simon Cowell”s TV talent shows – labeling the contests ‘dangerous’ and ‘cruel’.

The Eurhythmics star claims she would never like to be a part of the judging panel of shows such as ‘American Idol’ or Britain”s ‘The X Factor’ because of the devastating effect rejection can have on upcoming singers.

“I think those types of shows are dangerous and cruel – they”ll have a long-lasting effect on how people look at music,” the Daily Star quoted her as telling Britain”s Daily Mail.

“I understand their appeal, but there”s no chance I”d ever be a judge. You have a panel of people basically giving you the thumbs up or down, and there”s so much more to music than that,” she added. (ANI)

Here”s why Annie Lenox wore “HIV Positive” tee

London, April 29 (ANI): Annie Lennox says she sported a t-shirt emblazoned with the words ”HIV Positive” on American Idol to express solidarity with the people infected with the deadly virus.

The Eurythmics star, 55, triggered speculations about her heath after she wore the tee on the talent hunt show last week.

However, she has now explained her decision for selecting the outfit.

“The fact that I wore the t-shirt made thousands of people speculate whether I was was HIV positive or not. So many people responded, that it was the number one most discussed topic on Yahoo and MySpace. It”s such a simple thing, to wear a t-shirt with a message like that… yet it is highly controversial, and it forces people to confront an issue that is usually ignored, or kept at a distance,” the Daily Star quoted her, as writing on her blog.

Lennox added: “The t-shirt is a bold statement of solidarity with those of us who are HIV positive. It risks social chastisement, because it is accompanied by a load of fear and taboo. We want HIV to go away… but it”s currently the biggest killer of women of reproductive age around the globe. As a woman and a mother I intend to keep sending out the message.” (ANI)

Julia Roberts tops “World””s Most Beautiful People” list

On the list, Roberts, 42, the mother of 5-year-old twins and a 2 year-old son, is joined by Halle Berry, Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lopez, reports The Sydney Morning Herald.

Garry Marshall, who directed Roberts in Pretty Woman, said she was “as beautiful as ever.”

“She””s much more centered and calm now and not so stressed. She is quite the mom – very nurturing,” Marshall told People.

Ashley Greene, 23, who plays a vampire in the Twilight hit movie franchise, was among the newcomers to the widely-read list.

Robert Pattinson, as well as Canadian teen singer Justin Bieber and 2009 American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert made it to the male section of “world””s most beautiful”, while actresses Jessica Biel, Jessica Alba and singer Jessica Simpson were featured in a new “Beautiful Jessicas” section. (ANI)

Saucy lingerie ad banned from US telly for flashing too much flesh!

London, April 24 (ANI): A saucy lingerie ad has been banned from being aired on American television, as the model was showing too much flesh.

Network execs decided the commercial was too hot for TV saying its busty model, Ashley Graham, revealed too much cleavage.

Plus-size lingerie firm Lane Bryant had planned to air the advert this week during ratings hit Dancing with the Stars, but ABC network chiefs refused to screen it.

The move has prompted accusations of prejudice against full-figured models.

“The cleavage of the plus-size model, they said, was excessive, and we don”t think that”s the case,” the Sun quoted a source at Lane Bryant as saying.

“It certainly appears to be discrimination against full-sized women,” the source said.

The 25-second ad shows curvy Graham striking a series of sexy poses in Lane Bryant underwear.

“Mom always said beauty is skin deep. Somehow, I don”t think this is what Mom had in mind,” a voiceover said.

Lane Bryant said the Fox network also originally refused to show the ad during American Idol, insisting on re-edits that flashed less flesh, but finally agreed to feature it during the final ten minutes of the show.

“We knew the ads were sexy, but they are not salacious,” a Lane Bryant spokesman said.

“Our new commercials represent the sensuality of the curvy woman who has more to show the world than the typical waif-like lingerie model.

“What we didn”t know was that the networks, which regularly run Victoria”s Secret and Playtex advertising on the very shows from which we”re restricted, would object to a different view of beauty,” he stated.

A Fox spokesman insisted: “We didn”t treat them any differently than Victoria”s Secret.”

ABC declined to comment. (ANI)

Miley Cyrus delays flight for four hours to get her hair done!

London, Mar 26 (ANI): Pop singer Miley Cyrus is said to have reportedly kept the crew on her private jet waiting for four hours after she decided to get her hair done at a salon in New York before flying to Los Angeles.

Cyrus, 17, was in the Big Apple to promote her new movie ‘The Last Song’ and was due in L.A. on March 23 to film an appearance on TV talent show American Idol, reports the Daily Star.

According to People.com, she decided to get a last minute touch up before boarding the plane and dropped into Manhattan’s Gemini 14 Salon to get some highlights and hair extensions with her stylist Kristina Vidov.

The singer/actress helped mentor the final 11 contestants on American Idol before taking to the stage on March 24 to perform her new song ‘When I Look At You’. (ANI)

Madonna”s brother desperately eyeing ”Idol” spot

New York, Mar 5 (ANI): Madonna”s brother, Christopher Ciccone, is leaving no stone unturned to get Simon Cowell”s seat as a judge on ”American Idol”.

Ciccone, who has been his sister”s assistant, backup dancer, stylist and artistic director, launched a Facebook page — “Christopher Ciccone for American Idol! — in January.

However, the page has drawn only 602 members, but he is no mood to give up on his pursuit.

“I think I can bring a particular kind of credibility to the show. I”d be the only person sitting at the table who actually created a pop star from the beginning, and helped keep her there for 20 years,” the New York Post quoted him as saying.

“I know what it takes to make it,” he added.

And, Ciccone is not afraid of any competition for the Cowell seat.

The rumoured contenders for the position include Howard Stern, Interscope chief Jimmy Iovine, Warner Music CEO Lyor Cohen and former Sony Music boss Tommy Mottola.

“I think Howard is a great guy, but it”s difficult to see him sitting there, with the demographic he brings to the table,” said Ciccone.

“And I know producers are talking to Perez [Hilton], although he”s probably the only person who doesn”t realize how irrelevant he is,” he added.

Ciccone said that he hasn”t yet talked to Madonna about his quest, but, “I”m sure she”d be supportive,” he said. (ANI)

Lady Gaga says no to judging ‘American Idol’

Washington, Sep 14 (ANI): Lady Gaga has said that she does not want to be a judge on TV show ‘American Idol’, because it is difficult for her to criticise someone else’s talent.

The ‘Poker Face’ singer denied that she would be a judge on the show.

“I did appear on the show but I am not going to be a judge. I generally feel uncomfortable judging other artists anyway. I don’t feel that a musician’s life is a contest,” Contactmusic quoted her as saying.

The singer also slammed shows that push new artists straight into the limelight, claiming they should spend time nurturing their talent.

“It’s more about growing and struggling and playing live. It would be very uncomfortable for me to judge someone else,” she said.

Already, celebrities of the likes of Victoria Beckham, Shania Twain and Mary J Blige have appeared as guest judges on the talent show after Paula Abdul decided not to return for the new season.

Meanwhile, it was recently announced that US talk show host Ellen DeGeneres has replaced Paula on the judging panel, alongside Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi. (ANI)

Katy Perry calls Simon Cowell “honest a**hole”

Washington, Sept 2 (ANI): Singer Katy Perry has called Simon Cowell an “honest a**hole”.

The 24-year-old star is set to appear on American Idol as a guest judge and imitate Cowell’s brand of tough love.

“I might become a little bit of a buddy with Simon, because whenever I watch that show, as much as he’s an a**hole, he’s a very truthful, honest a**hole,” Contactmusic quoted her as saying.

“I’m not there to build them up. It’s weird, because I don’t want to break their hearts, but everyone knows someone who’s been doing karaoke and doing little gigs here and there, and nobody has told them that they can’t sing on pitch for, like, 15 years?

“And you’re like, ‘Someone needs to say something.’ And, unfortunately, I might be that gal, to tell you the truth. I always have been,” she added. (ANI)

Paula Abdul says Idol exit was not about money

Washington, Sept 1 (ANI): Paula Abdul insists her exit from American Idol judges’ panel was not about money.

In a recent interview, Abdul revealed the reason for leaving the popular talent hunt show.

People magazine quoted Abdul as telling TV Guide: “I had to stand on my principle…. I’m going to miss the experience of watching young talent evolve into a place where they get to take off and soar.”

The 47-year-old star said her paycheck was not the sole reason for her exodus.

She said: “I stand on principle where many people stand on money…I’m a hard-working artist. I’ve lasted in this business for 23 years. And you can’t do that unless you are good at what you do.”

Abdul is confident about her future and wants to do a talk show.

Brimming with confidence Abdul said: “I believe in myself and you have to have your own self respect.

“And sometimes decisions are very difficult to make, but I’ve always believed that at the core I’m a survivor. There’s not one thing I’ve done that I’ve really set my mind to that I’ve failed at.”

“I definitely want to do a talk show because it would be different,” she says. “It would be a lot of fun variety with a ton of unexpected stuff and tributes to everyday people getting their big chance,” she added.

The star says she had an “amazing experience” on the show and she’s still fond of it.

She said: “I had some really unforgettable moments that hit plateaus for me and I’m very blessed to have been a part of what made television history.” (ANI)

Paula Abdul in talks to headline revue-style stage show in Vegas

London, Aug 28 (ANI): Former American Idol judge Paula Abdul is reportedly in talks to bring a revue-style stage show to Sin City.

Abdul, 47, was rumoured last year to be in negotiations with executives at several Las Vegas casinos to headline a cheer-themed stage show in late 2009, reports the Daily Express.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Abdul is now seriously talking to The Venetian, the Wynn Las Vegas, and the Las Vegas Hilton to take residency in Sin City.

This is not the first time that Abdul has been in talks to star on the strip, she had also been on the verge of signing a deal with bosses at the Silverton Hotel in 2006 before talks fell through. (ANI)

Queen Latifah has no plans to grab Paula Abdul’s ‘American Idol’ job

Washington, Aug 27 (ANI): Queen Latifah has denied that she will be permanently filling in for Paula Abdul on ‘American Idol’.

The rapper-turned-actress is in talks to join regulars Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi for a few auditions of the show.

But the singer has claimed that she won’t become the fourth judge when the talent show returns to Los Angeles for a new season.

“I don’t want to replace Paula Abdul. I feel like she is irreplaceable,” Contactmusic quoted her as saying.

Abdul quit as a judge on the show earlier this month (Aug09), and stars of the likes of Victoria Beckham, Mary J. Blige and Katy Perry have filled her spot as special guests. (ANI)

Paula Abdul to host TV show

Washington, Aug 26 (ANI): After quitting American Idol, Paula Abdul is set to host a TV show about the world’s biggest female singers.

“This year’s VH1 Divas show will honour Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Jordin Sparks, Leona Lewis and Miley Cyrus – I am so excited!!” she added. (ANI)

Jordan named “Most Dangerous Cyberspace Celebrity ” in UK

London, Aug 25 (ANI): Katie Price, who recently split from hubby Peter Andre, has been named Britain’s “Most Dangerous Celebrity In Cyberspace’ by Internet researchers.

Computer protection company McAfee looked at popular search engines such as Google and Yahoo! in assessing the risk by clicking on celebrity-related website links.

The company has said that cybercriminals are using A-listers’ names and images to lure Internet users who surf the Web for the latest gossip, screen savers and ringtones to “fake” Web sites that look legitimate.

Such sites could be loaded with spyware collecting information about users without their knowledge, and viruses that can infiltrate computers, with the goal of making money and committing ID theft.

McAfee found that fans searching the web for the latest gossip on Katie, aka Jordan, and her newfound relationship with cage fighter Alex Reid have a one in six chance of clicking on a “risky” website.

Jude Law had the second highest percentage of related websites targeted by cybercrooks.

Victoria Beckham’s new role on American Idol made her the third most risky celebrities online in the UK.

Kate Moss came fourth in the list, while David Beckham’s fall out with LA Galaxy fans ensured that he secured the fifth position.

“Cybercrooks capitalising on the public obsession with celebrities and current events is nothing new…” the Telegraph quoted Greg Day, McAfee’s principal security analyst, as saying.

He added: “A quick flick across the front pages of the latest popular newspapers and magazines offers a fairly reliable snapshot of where the criminals will focus their efforts next.”

Here are the top 10 ‘risky’ British celebrities and the percentage of websites related to them, which were found to be potentially harmful:

1. Katie Price – 16.3 per cent

2. Jude Law – 15.4

3. Victoria Beckham – 13.6

4. Kate Moss – 12.6

5. David Beckham – 12.1

6. Daniel Radcliffe – 12

7. Kerry Katona – 9

8. Amy Winehouse – 8.6

9. Cheryl Cole – 8.5

10. Leona Lewis – 8.3 (ANI)

Bo Bice on why American Idol could suffer without Paula Abdul

Washington, Aug 21 (ANI): American Idol’s season four runner-up Bo Bice has revealed his views on why the show could suffer if Paula Abdul was not one of the judges.

Bice, 33, who got the chance to entertain troops in Afghanistan, said that the show would not make it if Abdul were not on it.

“If you took away Randy or you took away Paula or you took away Simon, you’re changing the dynamic of what made the show great,” Fox News quoted him as saying.

“I don’t think it could equally handle the loss on either end of which way the teeter tot goes, whether it be Simon or Paula. It’s like having a hit show, take Joey out of “Friends”… would it till be just as big of a hit?” he added. (ANI)
