Muslims in Lucknow offer ‘Alvida Namaz’ before Eid

Lucknow, Sep 18(ANI): Muslims gathered in huge numbers at several mosques of Lucknow on Friday to offer the ‘Alvida Namaz’ marking the last Friday prayers of the holy month of Ramadan.

“We prayed to the Lord to raise the financial status of Muslims and also eradicate all their problems. In India, Hindu and Muslims have been living together for several centuries and we want them to be like this in future,” said Moulvi Faizul Rehman, an Islamic cleric at a mosque in Lucknow.

Highlighting the significance of the ‘Alvida Namaz’, Mohammad Sayeed, a Namazi said that it is the reason why thousands of Muslim from across the city gather to offer prayers.

“During Ramadan if we participate in the ‘Alvida Namaz’ and offer our prayers, then we get a reward for it and it will usher prosperity to us,” Sayeed said.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Hijri lunar calendar, commemorates the revelation of Quran, Islam’s holy book, and has traditionally been a time of religious fervour, settling old disputes and behaving charitably towards neighbours.

Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. Considered auspicious for prayers, Muslims observe the month-long fasting named ‘Roza’.

They believe this secures them a place in heaven and also brings them face to face with Allah, the Almighty, on the day of ‘Kayamat’.

Clark hopes next generation of Oz cricketers value country above the dollar

Sydney, Sep.17 (ANI): Experienced Australian seamer Stuart Clark has warned that he can only hope the next generation of Australian cricketers values playing for their country ahead of chasing the almighty dollar on offer in the Indian Premier League and next month’s Champions League.

Skipper Ricky Ponting, who said he expected more people to follow in the footsteps of English all-rounder Andrew Flintoff and pursue the shorter version of the game, backed up Clark.

According to the Daily Telegraph, former one-day star Michael Bevan also weighed into the money-v-country debate when he questioned how much longer cricketers would be prepared to support the Test scene now that there were lucrative alternatives.

“What scares me the most is where does it leave the game if people just go chasing large sums of money for a bit of hit-and-giggle,” Clark told The Big Sports Breakfast.

“I think we as players all owe it to Test cricket to try and keep it afloat. I know the administration is working hard at it, but I personally hold grave fears for where the game is heading,” he added.

Clark said he had noticed youngsters at NSW getting excited about the money at next month’s Champions League in India, which offers a three million dollar purse to the winner and could earn the players 130,000 dollars each – the equivalent of a top-end state contract.

Ponting said more players could snub Test cricket to copy Flintoff.

“I think it probably could happen more and more especially with guys retiring from Test match cricket and wanting to play only the shorter versions of the game,” he said.

Bevan, who scored nearly 7000 runs in 232 one-dayers for Australia, told The Daily Telegraph: “I’d like to hope there is a strong allegiance shown by the players to Test cricket, but up until what point they continue to do that I’m not sure.” (ANI)

Zawahiri asks Pakistanis to support insurgents against US ‘crusade’

Islamabad, July 15 (ANI): In an apparent bid to garner the support of people against the US,Al-Qaeda has asked Pakistani civilians to help insurgents in their battle against the US-led ‘crusade’.

In a video released by Qaeda’s second in command, Ayman al-Zawahiri, Pakistanis have been urged to support the fight against the US, which according to him, is threatening the ‘country’s existence’.

The video titled “My Muslim Brothers and Sisters in Pakistan” showed Zawahiri asking the youth of the nation to join the fight against the US.

Zawahiri said the US intervention in Pakistan’s military and politics could break up the nuclear-armed country.

“The American crusader manipulation of Pakistan’s destiny has reached such an extent that it now poses a grave danger to Pakistan’s future and very existence,” the eight minute video showed Zawahiri, as saying.

“It is evident that Pakistan is deeply involved in a fierce internal struggle between two forces- one representing ‘Islamic values’ and the other being the US-led ‘crusade’ to neutralize fighters threatening Western interests,” he said.

The video which has been dubbed in English language was posted several jihadist web forums on Tuesday, The Nation reports.

“If we stand by passively without offering due support to the mujahedeen, we shall not only contribute to the destruction of Pakistan and Afghanistan, but we shall also deserve the painful punishment of Almighty Allah,” Zawahiri added.

Muslims in Bhopal offer special prayers for early rains

Bhopal, June 27 (ANI): Muslims in Bhopal offered Namaaz-e-Istasqa (Namaaz to ask for rain) as most of northern India reeled under drought-like situation due to delayed monsoon.

Thousands of Muslims gathered at city’s Eidgah (an open-air mosque) and offered special prayers seeking early rains.

“Our sins have risen…everyone is indulged in wrong and satanic activities, somebody is involved in gambling, another indulges in prostitution…none is giving ‘Zakat’ (a small percentage of savings as alms or charity that Muslims give)…everyone is running after the materialistic world…in this special prayer we have asked the Almighty to forgive us for our sins and bless us with rain,” said Qazi Ameerullah, a Muslim cleric.

The delay in the arrival of monsoon is becoming a cause of concern for the masses especially farmers, as nearly two-thirds of agriculture depends on the rains and two-thirds of the population is dependent on agriculture.

The monsoon is crucial for summer-sown crops such as rice, soybean, sugarcane and cotton. With only 40 percent of farmland irrigated, most of countries small farmers rely on the monsoon to water their crops.

The Meteorological Department has said that the total rainfall from the crucial June-September monsoon would be 93 percent of the long-term average, coming in below normal for the first time in four years. (ANI)

Politicians seek divine blessings for polls

Bhopal, April 5 (IANS) With the Lok Sabha polling dates fast approaching, many political heavyweights have descended at the well-known Pitambara Shakti Peeth temple in Madhya Pradesh to seek divine blessings for victory in the elections.

Several candidates in Madhya Pradesh whose tickets have been finalized have started performing religious rituals, including tantrik rites, hoping for success.

‘Most of the tantrik rituals are performed in secret as there is a strong belief that they don’t work if they are performed publicly,’ said a priest.

Several top leaders, including from the Scindia family, arrived a few days ago at Pitambara Peeth, located at the entrance of Datia town near Gwalior, for performing puja.

Prominent among those who arrived include former Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje and her sister and Gwalior MP Yashodhara Raje Scindia.

Their relative and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Dhyanendra Singh and his MP wife Maya Singh are also leaving no stone unturned in appeasing the goddess at the Pitambara Peeth.

‘All these leaders have shunned colourful clothes and are dressed in yellow attire. They are not only doing sewa (public service) at the temple but are not eating anything brought from outside. They are surviving only on home-cooked food in order to appease the goddess,’ said an official of the temple trust.

Others who visited the temple include BJP’s Madhya Pradesh president Narendra Singh Tomar, Madhya Pradesh PWD Minister Nagendra Singh, Water Resources Minister Anup Misra, who is the nephew of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and former minister Narottam Misra, who is contesting against Jyotiraditya Scindia from Guna.

‘They performed pujas to earn the favour of the almighty in the polls either for themselves or their party,’ the official said.

Leaders of the Congress, including Madhya Pradesh party chief Suresh Pachauri, are seeking the blessings of various deities for the success of the party.

‘Pachauri has already visited the Pitambara Peeth during Navratri. His supporters have organised yagnas in the towns of Dwarka and Ujjain though Pachauri’s candidature is yet to be finalized,’ a Congress leader told IANS.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s loyalists are reported to have fanned out to various religious places like the Lord Venkateshwara temple in Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh, the Guruvayur Krishna temple in Thrissur district of Kerala and the Sankat Mochan temple in Varanasi to pray for his victory.

Leaders from other states also visited the Pitambara Peeth. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati’s close aide Satish Chandra Misra and Minister Badshah Singh went to the temple after the announcement of the polls.

‘Candidates of all the parties are performing pujas and yagnas. Most leaders are opting for the Akhand Ramayana Path (recitation of Ramayana for 24 hours) or Durga Saptashati Path (recited for nine days),’ said Pandit Rajesh Sharma.

Some of the aspirants, hoping for sure success, have opted for a special prayer, the Shat Chandi Path, which takes 21 days, said Sharma.

Did a tentacle-shaped UFO destroy wind turbine in UK?

London, Jan 8 (ANI): A wind turbine in Conisholme, Lincolnshire, has been destroyed – and locals are blaming UFOs for it.

Locals have reported sightings of a bizarre tentacle-shaped UFO above a local wind farm, on the night before the wind turbine was mysteriously destroyed.

Several residents said that they were woken by the smash after strange lights were spotted streaking towards the 290ft-tall generator on a wind farm.

Dorothy Willows, who stays half a mile from the scene, was in her car when ‘strange lights’ loomed in the evening sky.

She was among dozens who spotted the mysterious flashing orangey-yellow spheres over Lincolnshire — where the turbine was left wrecked.

“The lights were moving across the sky towards the wind farm. Then I saw a low flying object. It was skimming across the sky towards the turbines,” the Sun quoted Dorothy, of Louth, as saying.

Hours later there was an almighty smash.

Dorothy said: “My husband Stephen was woken at 4am by the bang.”

John Harrison, another witness, described how he looked out of his landing window and saw a “massive ball of light with tentacles going right down to the ground” over the wind farm.

“It was huge. With the tentacles it looked just like an octopus,” he said.

Baffled power chiefs said of the smash, which left one of the wind turbine’s giant 65ft blades torn off, in Conisholme, Lincs: “We have a team investigating.”

There was no trace of the missing blade.

A UFO expert said: “We are very excited.” (ANI)
