Swat Taliban claims responsibility for Timergara suicide bombing, target killings

Peshawar, Apr 26(ANI): The Swat Taliban has claimed responsibility for Saturday’s suicide bombing in Timergara, and the recent killings of five anti-Taliban activists in different parts of the region.

Ten cops were injured in the suicide attack on April 24, when an explosives-laden car rammed into the police vehicle transporting Swat Police personnel on the Timergara Bypass.

Pak team can retain T20 title with fans’, media’s support: Afridi

Karachi, Apr.24 (ANI): Pakistan T20 captain Shahid Afridi has said that his squad is all geared up for defending the World T20 Championship in the West Indies, adding that it needed support of both people of the country and the media.

Afridi said his boys are well prepared to tackle world’s best teams during the coveted tournament but they needed fans support to transform their talent and will into performance on the field.

“My team and I are geared up to, tactically and technically, live up to the expectations of the nation for accomplishing the task of winning in the West Indies,” Afridi said in an interview prior to departure to Caribbean.

The 15-member Pakistan contingent would leave on Saturday (today) and reach St. Lucia via Dubai and London.

“Without the prayers of the nation and supporters across the world, the Pakistan cricket team cannot achieve anything. Besides playing patriotically for Pakistan we need support of countrymen and the media. My appeal to the national media is to go for healthy criticism while keeping Pakistan’s interest above everything,” The Dawn quoted Afridi, as saying.

Afridi denied being under any pressure to perform, and stressed that players would have to lift their fielding standards if they have to repeat last year’s success.

“Fielding is crucial area in this fastest version of the game, and a lot of hard work was done to raise the standard. We are ready give our best and rest with Allah,” he said.

Afridi said his team has good mix of youth and experience that can create trouble for even the world’s best teams.

“T20 cricket is altogether different. We got a lot of firepower in our batting.
We have experienced Misbah-ul-Haq, Abdul Razzaq, young Umar Akmal, Khalid Latif and Salman Butt,” he said. (ANI)

Al-Qaida declares Iraq ‘curfew’ to stop elections: SITE

WASHINGTON: Al-Qaida in Iraq today declared a country-wide “curfew” in a bid to stop Sunday’s elections from going ahead, the SITE monitoring agency said.

“The Islamic state declares for the time a curfew on election day… from six in the morning until six pm, throughout Iraq and especially in Sunni areas,” the group said in a message posted on its website, according to SITE.

“For the safety of our people, any of those who learn of this, report it to those who do not know and supply yourself with needs for the curfew.”

The Islamic state of Iraq, the Al-Qaida front in the country, added in the statement that anyone who defies the curfew will “unfortunately expose himself to the anger of Allah and then to all kinds of weapons of the mujahedeen.”

Muslims in Lucknow offer ‘Alvida Namaz’ before Eid

Lucknow, Sep 18(ANI): Muslims gathered in huge numbers at several mosques of Lucknow on Friday to offer the ‘Alvida Namaz’ marking the last Friday prayers of the holy month of Ramadan.

“We prayed to the Lord to raise the financial status of Muslims and also eradicate all their problems. In India, Hindu and Muslims have been living together for several centuries and we want them to be like this in future,” said Moulvi Faizul Rehman, an Islamic cleric at a mosque in Lucknow.

Highlighting the significance of the ‘Alvida Namaz’, Mohammad Sayeed, a Namazi said that it is the reason why thousands of Muslim from across the city gather to offer prayers.

“During Ramadan if we participate in the ‘Alvida Namaz’ and offer our prayers, then we get a reward for it and it will usher prosperity to us,” Sayeed said.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Hijri lunar calendar, commemorates the revelation of Quran, Islam’s holy book, and has traditionally been a time of religious fervour, settling old disputes and behaving charitably towards neighbours.

Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. Considered auspicious for prayers, Muslims observe the month-long fasting named ‘Roza’.

They believe this secures them a place in heaven and also brings them face to face with Allah, the Almighty, on the day of ‘Kayamat’.

Country’s largest Ramadan congregation held in Kerala

Malappuram (Kerala), Sep 17(ANI): Around six people from across the country attended the country’s largest Ramadan prayers congregation at Swalatha Nagar in Kerala’s Malappuram district on Thursday morning.

The Lailat Al Qadr (the Night of Power), which is held at the Ma’din campus on the 27th night of the holy month of Ramadan, is thought to be largest congregation outside Mecca and Medina.

This annual conclave has attracted attention from believers across the country and from abroad as well and the discipline with which people arrange themselves for prayers is another amazing aspect of the event.

The prayers, which started on Wednesday evening, lasted till 3 am on Thursday and many Muslim dignitaries gave special speech to the gathered congregation.

“Most of our sayings believe that on the 27th Lord Almighty gives blessings. So, we congregate here to take the blessings on this date. When you have one prayer it has only one value. When you pray in a congregation, then it is accumulated, it is accumulative and it is proponent and in large you get pure bonding. The whole night we pray and this is why we congregate here,” said Hajee K.M Mustafa Kamal, Programme convenor of Swalatha prayer conference.

“This started in a very small way and this itself shows that Allah has given so much of success to this. When every other movement has failed over the years but every year this congregation grows and today this year this has become the largest Muslim congregation after Mecca and Medina,” Mustafa Kamal added.

Apart from the main venue, people were accommodated in 10 other grounds, which were spread across 10 km on either sides of the NH-213. Of these, 5 were specially designed and prepared for women. (ANI)

Pakistan’s rocket-shelling plunges market price of land beyond border

Chak Allah Bakhash (Punjab), Sept. 15 (ANI): The prices of farming land have plunged following past week’s rocket-shelling incident in the India-Pakistan border villages.

Local farmers say that it was already quite tough to find buyers for the land situated beyond fencing and the latest rocket-shelling incident has caused the prices to drop further.

Fenced from three sides, Village Chak Allah Bakhash at the International border has nearly 150 acres of land beyond fencing.

Balwinder Kaur, one of the natives in village Chak Allah Bakhash, said that it was already difficult for her to meet the daily expenditure.

Sucha Singh, another villager, said: “My family owns a piece of land across fencing and has been facing many difficulties while cultivating the land at the border. There are no takers for our land.”

Nearly 553 km long barbed fencing of the Punjab border along side Pakistan resulted in thousands of acres of land being left beyond fencing.

The price of the land spread before fencing line is nearly three times higher than the vast land spread beyond the fencing.

An acre of land, located before fencing, is available for approximately 600,000 to 10,00,000 rupees whereas more fertile land, located beyond the fencing, is worth about 200,000 to 300,000 rupees per acre.

Mandatory frisking by security men at the border gates of the fence and restricted working hours and few objections could be some of the reasons for a lesser price of land beyond fencing.

The farmers are worried that it would be difficult to find buyers for their lands. By Ravinder Singh Robin (ANI)

Chinese firm angers Iranians by creating jeans line with Islamic expression

London, Sep.16 (ANI): A Chinese clothing company has angered Iranians by creating a line of jeans bearing the Islamic expression “In the name of God, the compassionate, the merciful”.

The marketing ploy backfired because the phrase “Bismillah-ir-Rahman-ir-Rahim” was prominently displayed on the pockets of the jeans’ backsides, something likely to be seen as disrespectful by devout Muslims.

The perceived slight, first reported in the Iranian media, prompted a firm response from the police who announced they had seized the garments and arrested three businessmen said to have imported them, The Guardian reports.

“In Islam, Allah is a respected word that you need to have ablutions before saying. Now it is embroidered on the sitting place of these jeans. Worse, they are sold in Tehran, which many would like to call the heart of the Islamic world,” a pro-Iranian government body said. (ANI)

Fasting Muslims count on rosary meter

Varanasi, Sep 9 (ANI): Fasting during Ramadan, the devout Muslims have got Japanese digitised rosary meters to help them keep a count of Allah they chant during the fast in India’s northern Varanasi.

The gadget is the latest attraction among an assortment of things, which are being sold during the ongoing fasting month.

The hand-held tiny rosary meter is becoming popular among Muslims who pray and chant the name of Allah as it would help them remember the number they have counted.

“Earlier we used to use a rosary made of 100 plastic beads for chanting the name of Allah. If we would talk to someone while chanting, we would get confused and forget the last number we counted. But this rosary meter shows the last number we stopped at to talk to someone while chanting…So we would know which number to restart the chanting from,” said Mohammed Wasim, a shopkeeper.

Theses handy meters, available at Rs 250 each.

“This rosary meter is good. I had bought about three of them. When people saw these rosary meters they asked me to buy for them as well. So I have come here to buy these high-tech rosaries for them,” said Mohammed Israel, another shopkeeper.

The rosary machine is very light and comes with a digital meter. The faithful can chant the name of Allah 10,000,00 times without making an error in the number of counting. They can stop in between to do other chores and then pick up from the number they had left at. (ANI)

Lockerbie bomber set to cash in from ‘tell all’ book

Tripoli (Libya), Aug 25(ANI): The Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al Megrahi, who was released on compassionate grounds by the Scottish Government, could cash in on his notoriety by publishing his ‘tell all’ autobiography.

According to reports, Megrahi has begun writing the memoir, despite his insistence that he is suffering from terminal prostate cancer and has only three months to live.

It is believed that the book could earn a fortune for his family and provide a final insult to his victims’ families.

Abdurrhman Swessi, Colonel Gaddafi’s envoy to Scotland, has said that Megrahi wanted to write the book to “proclaim his innocence”. Insha’Allah [God willing], he has his mind set on writing it,” The Daily Express quoted Swessi, as saying.

A former Libyan intelligence officer, head of security for Libyan Arab Airlines, and director of the Centre for Strategic Studies, Megrahi, was convicted of 270 counts of murder for his part in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie in Scotland on December 21, 1988.

Now, the autobiography is expected to detail his life in jail and what he knew about the bombing, in which he claims he was made a scapegoat for the outrage. (ANI)

Eunuchs cricket team comfortably beat local club in Pakistan

Islamabad, Aug 22(ANI): In a first of a kind cricket match played between a team of eunuchs and a team of young men from a local club in Pakistan’s Sukkur city, the eunuchs emerged victors.

Eunuchs are seen as social outcasts by Pakistan’s largely conservative Islamic society, which has ignored them over the years.

They are forced to eke out a living at the fringes of society, such as by begging, or by flaunting their difference as dancers or sex workers.

The match was held in front of a sizeable crowd, which had turned out to cheer both teams.he local club ‘Olympians’ won the toss and elected to bat first, and eventually managed to score 65 runs in their allotted eight overs.

While, the eunuchs’ team ‘Sanam XI’ comfortably overhauled the target, with Allah Rakhi top scoring 20 runs to win the ‘man of the match’ award.

The match was allowed to take place after Pakistan Judge Iftikhar Chaudhry ruled that eunuchs must be given greater rights. Chaudhry ordered the government to stop discrimination against eunuchs and grant them special medical and public facilities.

“I want to dedicate our victory to Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry. It is only due to him that things are changing for eunuchs in Pakistan,” The Telegraph quoted Sanam Khan, the captain of the eunuchs’ team, as saying. (ANI)

Zawahiri asks Pakistanis to support insurgents against US ‘crusade’

Islamabad, July 15 (ANI): In an apparent bid to garner the support of people against the US,Al-Qaeda has asked Pakistani civilians to help insurgents in their battle against the US-led ‘crusade’.

In a video released by Qaeda’s second in command, Ayman al-Zawahiri, Pakistanis have been urged to support the fight against the US, which according to him, is threatening the ‘country’s existence’.

The video titled “My Muslim Brothers and Sisters in Pakistan” showed Zawahiri asking the youth of the nation to join the fight against the US.

Zawahiri said the US intervention in Pakistan’s military and politics could break up the nuclear-armed country.

“The American crusader manipulation of Pakistan’s destiny has reached such an extent that it now poses a grave danger to Pakistan’s future and very existence,” the eight minute video showed Zawahiri, as saying.

“It is evident that Pakistan is deeply involved in a fierce internal struggle between two forces- one representing ‘Islamic values’ and the other being the US-led ‘crusade’ to neutralize fighters threatening Western interests,” he said.

The video which has been dubbed in English language was posted several jihadist web forums on Tuesday, The Nation reports.

“If we stand by passively without offering due support to the mujahedeen, we shall not only contribute to the destruction of Pakistan and Afghanistan, but we shall also deserve the painful punishment of Almighty Allah,” Zawahiri added.

Zawahiri’s latest video comes nearly a year after he had announced a ‘jihad’ (holy war) against the South Asian nations in August 2008. (ANI)

Resentful Afghans unlikely to welcome, support government, foreign troops or Taliban

Lashkar Gah (Afghanistan), July 3 (ANI) Incoming American forces are likely to continue to face a hostile Afghan population, even as they seek to reverse their military losses to a resurgent Taliban.

So hopeless is the prevailing situation in the landlocked country; that observers say that Afghan civilians are unlikely to take sides or offer unconditional support to either the foreign troops, the Afghan Government or the Taliban.

Villagers in some districts have taken up arms against foreign troops to protect their homes or in anger after losing relatives in air strikes, the New York Times quotes several community representatives, as saying.

Others have been moved to join insurgents out of poverty or simply because the Taliban’s influence is overtly pervasive.

Taliban control of the countryside is so extensive in provinces like Kandahar and Helmand that winning districts back will involve tough fighting and may ignite further tensions, residents and local officials warn.

The government has no presence in five of southern Helmand’s 13 districts, and in several others, like Nawa, it holds only the district town, where troops and officials live virtually under siege.

In rural areas, the local population has accepted Taliban rule and is watching the United States troop buildup with trepidation.

The southern provinces of Afghanistan have suffered the worst civilian casualties since NATO’s deployment to the region in 2006.

“Now there are more people siding with the Taliban than with the government,” the NYT quoted Abdul Qadir Noorzai, head of the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission in southern Afghanistan, as saying.

“People are hostages of the Taliban, but they look at the coalition also as the enemy, because they have not seen anything good from them in seven or eight years,” adds Hajji Abdul Ahad Helmandwal, a district council leader from Nadali in Helmand Province.

Foreign troops continue to make mistakes that enrage whole sections of this deeply tribal society, like the killing of a tribal elder’s son and his wife as they were driving to their home in Helmand two months ago.

The infusion of more American troops into southern Afghanistan is aimed at ending a stalemate between NATO and Taliban forces.

The extra forces will be critical to create confidence among the locals and persuade insurgents to give up the fight.

In parts of Helmand and Kandahar, resentment and frustration are rampant.

“They come here just to fight, not to bring peace,” said Allah Nazad, a farmer.

Many do not side with the Taliban out of choice, however, and could be won over, community leaders said.

Fazel Muhammad, a member of the district council of Panjwai, an area west of Kandahar, said he knew people who were laying mines for the Taliban in order to feed their families.

He estimated that 80 percent of insurgents were local people driven to fight out of poverty and despair. Offered another way out, only two percent would support the Taliban, he said.(ANI)

Hindus, Muslims pray for rains in Patna

Patna, June 27 (ANI): Following a delayed monsoon, people in Bihar have turned anxious and want the God to bless them with rains.

On Saturday, various Hindus and Muslims held special prayers to invoke divine powers of the Rain Gods who, they believe, have decided to give the region a miss.

Residents said while incessant rains are lashing western parts of the country disrupting normal life, it played truant here.

Many Hindus participated in a Yajna, or the holy fire ritual whereas members of the Muslim community offered Namaz for rains.

Priests chanted shloka and hymns that reverberated in the entire vicinity during the Yajna ceremony.

“We are pleasing the rain God by offering this prayer. We are praying here in a hope that the rain God accepts our wish and grants us with rain. This rain will bring smile on the faces of the farmers and would help bringing back greenery in the state,” said Prakash Malakar, a Hindu priest.

Members of the Muslim community, took part in prayer session and said they had full faith that the Gods would be pleased and rains would soon touch not only Bihar but other parched lands as well.

“The intense heat and lack of rain is not only causing serious problems to the people of Bihar but to other states as well. We wish that Allah blesses not only Bihar with rains but also the other drought hit regions,” said Mohammad Kalimuddin, a Muslim priest.

The delay in the arrival of monsoon is becoming a cause of concern for the masses especially farmers, as nearly two-thirds of agriculture depend on the rains and two-thirds of the population is dependent on agriculture.

The Meteorological Department has said that the total rainfall from the crucial June-September monsoon would be 93 percent of the long-term average, coming in below normal for the first time in four years. (ANI)

Taliban bombs girls’ school in South Waziristan

Peshawar, June 25 (ANI): In what may be seen as a show of defiance against the military which has launched a major offensive against the Tehreek-e-Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud in the region, the Taliban has blown up a girls’ school in South Waziristan.

The incident took place in Shin Warsak town situated about 13 kilometres away from Wana, the capital of South Waziristan, The Nation reports.

Sources said the blast was so powerful that is destroyed the school building completely.

“A girls’ high school was blown up in Shin Warsak town, 13 kilometres west of Wana, the main town in South Waziristan’s tribal region,” said local government official, Allah Bagh Khan.

Khan confirmed that there was no casualty in the incident.

This was the third such attack on a school building in less than a week. The extremists had destroyed two other schools, one in Peshawar and other in Bajaur earlier this week.

The Taliban has destroyed over 200 girls’ schools in the Swat Valley, and bombed at least 100 in the troubled northwest tribal region of the country. (ANI)

Turkish writer Gursel rejects allegations of insulting Mohammed

Istanbul – Turkish writer Nedim Gursel appeared in court Tuesday to reject allegations of insulting Islam in his latest novel, “Allah’s Daughters.”

Gursel, who makes his home in France, called the court proceedings regrettable and irritating and insisted that his book did not undermine religious values.

The proceedings were adjourned until June 26.

After the Tuesday session, he told the German Press Agency dpa in Istanbul that “I had expected an acquittal…I have come to defend my novel.”

He conceded that after the court adjournment, there was “reason for concern.”

Gursel, is along with Yasar Kemal and Nobel Prize-winning novelist Orhan Pamuk is among the leading contemporary Turkish novelists. His works have often been censored in Turkey, especially during the period of the military dictatorship in the 1980s.

“I thought those times were over,” he commented about the censorship. If Turkey wanted to be accepted into the European Union, it must respect the freedom of opinion, he said.

“Allah’s Daughters” takes place in the 7th Century and raises questions about faith and violence in Islam. Gursel said the book is done with respect shown to the faithful.

In the court proceedings, Gursel is also accused of insulting the Prophet Mohammed and his wives. (dpa)

A Hindu girl eyes world record by penning Quran

Hyderabad, May 18 (ANI): Tejasri, a 15-year-old Hindu girl from Hyderabad, is on her way to create a world record by penning down a 9999-ft long Quran in Arabic.

Tejasri began writing the text on April 23 and is about to finish the last six chapters in 20 days time eyeing a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Moulana Abdul Kadir Razvi who is helping her believes that he is fortunate to see a Hindu girl replicate the holy book with so much dedication.

“It’s not even a month that this girl has started writing Quran. Everyday she writes for 10 hours. This is an achievement. This is a great blessing from Allah to this girl.” said Moulana Abdul Kadir Razvi, a Muslim priest.

Tejasri who just gave her 10th class exams is now earning appreciations from all around.

“I started from April 23, I will complete the book in another 20 days I have already completed 24 chapters. I write for almost 10-12 hoursveryday,” said Tejasri

Haj pilgrims in Uttar Pradesh to be chosen by computerised lots

Lucknow, May 6 (ANI): The Haj Committee for Uttar Pradesh has come up with a novel mode of computerised system through which the aspiring devout Muslims will be chosen by lots for the pilgrimage to Mecca and Madina, known as the Haj.

The first list of pilgrims chosen through such lots was released in Lucknow on Tuesday.

Thousands of aspiring pilgrims waited anxiously to hear their names confirmed from the data that was compiled by the Haj Committee and uploaded on its website, prior to the draw of lots.

Sheikh Mohammad Khan, an applicant contended that it is the Lord Almighty’s call when one’s name gets selected through the online system of lots.

“What a better moment of happiness can we get? This is such an opportunity, which only a fortunate person can get. A lot of this fortune depends on the blessings of Lord Allah. A person experiences a divine feeling when he gets selected through the computerised system of lots,” he said.

According to official figures of Central Haj Committee, the total number of Haj seats allotted to India during 2009 is 1,60,000 of which 45,000 will be earmarked for Haj trips organised by private operators.

Out of the 160 thousand, 27,378 Haj pilgrims are from the state of Uttar Pradesh itself.

Another applicant Haleem Farooqi mentioned that his family and friends have been praying for him so that he gets an opportunity to undertake this holy pilgrimage.

The escalated number of applicants in India had created a problem for the respective Haj Committees in various states in finalising the list of pilgrims.

To overcome this bottleneck and crisis, the choosing of names through computerised lots was introduced in 2007.

Saudi Arabia grants Haj visas to countries based on certain strict ratio of quotas but has increased the numbers over the past couple of years.

Haj, one of the largest manifestations of religious devotion in the world, retraces the path of Prophet Mohammad 14 centuries ago after he defeated pagan forces in Mecca. (ANI)

They were speaking at the conclusion of a three-day congregation near here, The News reports.

“Shariah cannot be enforced at gunpoint,” declared Haji Abdul Wahab, Amir of the Tableeghi Jamaat, Pakistan.

The scholar cited the example of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), and said the Prophet never used force. Instead he spread the word of God only by peaceful means.

Haji Abdul Wahab also condemned extremism and militancy in the name of Islam.

Maulana Jamshaid, Maulana Mohammad Ahmed and Mualana Fahim also addressed the congregation of tens of thousands of people. (ANI)
