NASA concludes tests for prototype Moon rovers

Washington, September 16 (ANI): NASA has concluded two weeks of technology development tests on two of the agency’s prototype lunar rovers.

“These tests provide us with crucial information about how our cutting edge vehicles perform in field situations approximating the moon,” said Rob Ambrose, Human Robotic Systems project lead at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.

“We learn from them, then go back home to refine the technology and plan the next focus of our research,” he added.

The annual studies featured an intensive, simulated 14-day mission.

Two crew members, an astronaut and a geologist, lived for more than 300 hours inside NASA’s prototype Lunar Electric Rover.

The explorers scouted the area for features of geological interest, then donned spacesuits and conducted simulated moonwalks to collect samples.

The crew also docked to a simulated habitat, drove the rover across difficult terrain, performed a rescue mission and made a four-day traverse across the lava.

Throughout the test, the crew provided updates via Twitter and posted pictures and video online.

Prior to the test, NASA’s K10 scout robot identified areas of interest for the crew to explore.

NASA’s heavy-lift rover Tri-ATHLETE – or All-Terrain Hex-Legged Extra-Terrestrial Explorer – carried a habitat mockup to which the rover docked. (ANI)

1988 pic shows US Fritzl, wife as loving couple

London, Sep 1 (ANI): A picture of American Fritzl, Phillip Garrido, and his wife Nancy, taken in 1988, has portrayed them to be a loving couple.

The picture of Garrido, then 37, and Nancy, 34, shows them hugging one another as they posed for the camera, soon after he had been released from jail on parole for kidnap and rape.

Both had met at Leavenworth prison, Kansas, where he was serving his sentence and she was visiting a relative, and they got married in the jail.

After Garrido got out they had the picture taken to send to his father Manuel, who refused to attend the ceremony.

It was signed on the back: “All our love, Phillip and Nancy Garrido”.

“You can see that he is a very handsome man and you can imagine him dominating Jaycee,” the Sun quoted Manuel as saying.

“Nancy was extremely attractive and would have and did do anything for Phil.

“They look like the typical All-American couple – but when you know Phil like I do you know there is something terrible under the surface,” he added. (ANI)

Flintoff says he could never have been a Tendulkar, Botham, Sobers or Imran Khan

London, Aug.26 (ANI): Former England Test player Andrew Flintoff has said that he could have never achieved greatness and didn’t profess to.

“I was asked have you been a great cricketer and the obvious answer is no. They’re the Bothams, the Sobers, the Imran Khans, the Tendulkars, the Ricky Pontings who achieved greatness over a long period of time, playing Test after Test after Test,” The Mirror quoted him, as saying.

“I have performed at times and I am proud to have done that. For the bulk of my career I have played through pain and with injury so to be out on the field was an achievement in some ways – but as for greatness? No,” he said.

Flintoff has never betrayed his beliefs on how the game should be played and how the crowd should be entertained.

Captain Andrew Strauss sought out Flintoff and told the all- rounder that he really would miss him. (ANI)

Dad prefers cutting grass to watching an all-Williams Wimbledon final

London, July 2 (ANI): Richard Williams has said that he would rather cut the grass than watch the expected final at Wimbledon between his two daughters – Venus and Serena.

Venus and Serena are each one game away from a repeat of last year’s final, and if they both come through their games today, against Dinara Safina and Elena Dementieva respectively, their father will be on the first plane home.

Throughout their careers, Williams Senior has never wanted to watch his children fighting.

It is a good job too, as in last year’s final they were slamming 120mph serves into each other’s bodies and putting so much venom on their passing shots it was lucky nobody got hurt.

He hopes to applaud his girls to success one after the other on Centre Court this afternoon then head straight down to the travel agents and book his flight home.

“I’m sure it will be a rematch. I’ll go home because I can’t watch.

But I believe they will both definitely make it to the final. When they play each other I will never watch.

And I always tell the captain on the flight home when Venus and Serena are playing each other, ‘Please don’t tell me’,” the Daily Express quoted Richard, as saying.

“Last year, as soon as I got off the aircraft, I was walking through the terminal when someone said, ‘Heh, Venus beat her sister’.

“I would like to be back on that airplane again. That would be real good for me. It means I can drive my boat, I can get on my motorcycle, I can cut my grass – I love to cut my grass – and I can work around the house,” he said. (ANI)

Sharif’s “kept in dark” over Kargil claims “an absolute lie”: Musharraf

Lahore, June 27 (ANI): Former Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf has rejected former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s claims that he was kept in the dark regarding the Kargil issue.

In an interview to a private television channel, Musharraf claimed that he had shared all details with Sharif regarding the Kargil conflict.

Terming Sharif’s statement as “an absolute lie”, Musharraf said he gave Sharif a detailed presentation on the Kargil situation just two days before the former left for the US.

He said that Sharif repeatedly enquired about whether the troops could be withdrawn from Kargil, to which he claimed to have replied that it had to be decided by the country’s leadership.

“I said I have informed you about the military situation but the withdrawal of forces is a political decision which has to be taken by the political leadership,” The Daily Times quoted Musharraf, as saying.

The former military general also claimed that he came near to resolving the Kashmir dispute with India during the infamous Agra summit in 2001.

Musharraf said that he and the then India Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee had even agreed to draft a joint declaration regarding the Kashmir issue, but blamed New Delhi for ditching Islamabad at the last moment.

“The Indian leadership changed their mind at the last minute and did not support the joint declaration, saying that the cabinet had not approved it,” said Musharraf.

Musharraf said he tried his best to resolve the issue which is pending for years, and in that context even held talks with all the stakeholders such as All-Parties Hurriyat Conference and various leaders of the Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK).

He, however, said the meetings did not yield substantial results, as the leaders ‘failed to guide him in the right direction’.

Musharraf also rejected the notion that the country’s Army did not want a resolution on the Kashmir issue.

He said all such reports were primarily aired to malign the image of the security forces, and a part of a “vicious propaganda” against the country. (ANI)

“Carefree” Symonds successfully holds on to self-imposed booze ban

Brisbane, June 24(ANI): Three weeks after being sent home from the Twenty20 World Cup following indiscipline charges, Australian cricketer Andrew Symonds successfully held on to a self-imposed booze ban before playing for Wynnum-Manly in an All-Stars rugby match in Brisbane.

Symonds showed more discipline preparing for his league outing, and revealed that not one drop of alcohol passed his lips for four days before playing in the rugby league match

“The night before the game I was very excited and sort of struggled to get to sleep. And a few days leading up to the game, it was strictly lots of vegies and a fairly lean diet, and I swore myself off alcohol for about four days. I was pretty keen for this game,” the Fox Sports quoted Symonds, as saying.

Despite being axed from the national side, the 34-year-old cricketer sounded like a relieved man, who is ready to move on.

“I am enjoying life. I can be my own person and do what I want to do. I feel like I’ve had a huge weight lifted off my shoulders and I’m enjoying life,” Symonds said.

“It (rugby match) was a great experience and I had a ball. I much prefer to do something that only takes a few hours of your weekend than a whole week of your life. I’d love to play again, that was just to get the cobwebs out. It would be great to have another run because a lot came back to me after playing the other night,” he added.

Though, his name won’t be on Queensland Cricket’s list of contracted players when they announce it Thursday, but he’s still considering turning out for the Bulls next season.

“Now I have to clear my head and make up my mind how much cricket I want to play and who for. Obviously I’ve got other interests, I’m passionate about my league and fishing and that so hopefully in the next little bit I’ll have a clear plan as to what I want to do,” he said. (ANI)

Phelps should get Olympic gold for marathon love-making, says lapdancer!

London, May 10 (ANI): Michael Phelps has had his fantasies with a pair of strippers, boasted about taking dope and cries a lot after getting drunk – these are some of his secrets spilt by a lapdancer.

Theresa White claimed the Olympic swimming star is far from the all-American boy everyone thinks he is.

The 25-year-old, who first met the champ at a strip club on a drunken night out last November, revealed the gold medallist turned into a cry baby after his controversial marijuana pictures surfaced.

“I saw Michael after the photos were published in February and he got really upset. He turned to me and said, ‘I can’t believe that happened. I’m terrified my career will be over.’ He was almost in tears,” News of the World quoted her as saying.

Theresa further claimed that the star, who was put on a three-month ban following the scandal, indulged in marathon love-making with two beauties at the same time, and even bragged about his dope-smoking exploits.

She said: “He said he liked short girls and I thought that was funny because he’s so tall. At his place we started playing drinking games.

“Two hours later I was pretty drunk and I went up to Michael and said, ‘If you were to have a threesome tonight, who would you like it to be with?’ He told me he’d never had one before but said it would be with me and then pointed at another girl.

“Everybody else stayed put while we went upstairs and jumped into bed. The sex lasted for about three hours. Michael should get another Olympic gold for marathon love-making!”

She continued: “When I ran into another girl called Jen at a party it turned out he was sleeping with both of us. And I’ve heard that there are at least five or six girls he can call on any time to come over and be with him.

“Michael’s not the all-American boy the public thinks he is. I never saw him smoke marijuana but he was into booze-and chewing tobacco. When he’s been drinking that’s usually when he starts crying. He cries a lot.

“And he chews tobacco like a sailor. It’s disgusting. All over his house are plastic bottles that he spits it into.”

The stunner further said the ace swimmer is a complete mummy’s boy and would not go against her to have a future with Theresa. (ANI)

Ford sues Next for poaching leggy model Kendra Spears

New York, May 7 (ANI): Model Kendra Spears has emerged as a serious bone of contention between two rival modelling agencies, with Ford Models suing Next Management over the leggy stunner who is billed as “the next Cindy Crawford”.

Ford has accused Next of poaching the “All-American beauty”, who was a finalist in its Supermodel of the World competition last year.

“Kendra Spears is one of the shining stars of the Ford development system. Signed as a prospect while still a teenager in braces, for more than a year, Ford has painstakingly cultivated Spears – literally, taught her how to be an international fashion model,” the New York Daily News quoted the suit, filed in Manhattan Supreme Court, as saying.

The suit also accuses Spears of breaching an exclusive contract with Ford so that she could follow three other lovelies who jumped ship to Next in recent months.

The 20-year-old Seattle college student has modelled for Gucci and Hermes following her splashy debut in Ford’s supermodel search.

She bagged a three-year deal with Ford on the back of her showing in the contest.

“She is a beautiful, fresh, all-American ‘face’ who, having been discovered by Ford, trained by Ford, and professionally developed by Ford, is at the precipice of a breakthrough. She is about to become one of a handful of the world’s most sought-after high fashion models,” the suit says.

The court papers say that before signing the deal with Ford, the 5 foot, 10-and-a-half inch beauty was little more than raw talent.

“She was not a high-fashion model. In fact, she was an unknown – a teenager with braces, with no modeling experience to speak of,” the suit says.

“Ford literally taught Spears how to walk a catwalk (an advanced skill requiring dedicated coaching),” it adds.

A spokeswoman for Ford Models declined to comment, and a call to Next Management’s Manhattan office was not returned. (ANI)

Faith Hill goes incognito in Redbook mag’s May issue

Washington, April 23 (ANI): Country singer Faith Hill has posed as three other iconic blondes for the May issue of Redbook magazine.

The 41-year-old has posed as actress Brigitte Bardot, model Twiggy and actress Grace Kelly, reports Fox News.

On portraying Grace Kelly, Hill said: “Grace is probably the one that I relate to the most in my life and the one that I have most in common with.”

“I have this seemingly high-profile life, like Grace did, and we were both the mother of three children. She epitomizes the all-American girl with a quiet class and inner strength. She was like everybody’s girl-seemingly comfortable and accessible-yet untouchable,” she added.

On portraying Brigitte Bardot: “To be completely candid, I felt least like Brigitte of all three of the women. To me, sexuality is very different from sensuality. And Brigitte possesses this sensual essence that is so powerful. If I could possess that kind of sensuality, I would want to possess it like she does,” Hill said.

On portraying Twiggy: “It was hard for me to look at myself as Twiggy,” admits Hill. “I think she was in her late teens when the original photo was taken. And there’s a very big difference between a teenager and a 41-year old,” Hill said. (ANI)

1ST LEAD: German and Ukrainian clubs make up last four of UEFA Cup By George Burns, dpa

Hamburg – SV Hamburg set up an all-German UEFA Cup semi- final tie against Werder Bremen despite losing 2-1 to Manchester City Thursday while Ukrainian clubs Shakhtar Donetsk and Dynamo Kiev will meet in the other semi after prevailing in their quarter-final ties.

Leading 3-1 from the first leg, Hamburg looked to have one foot in the last four of the competition when Paolo Guerrero took advantage of City’s failure to clear a low cross from Jonathan Pitroipa to fire a low shot low into the corner after 12 minutes.

However, City had a stroke of luck five minutes later when Piotr Trochowski was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area and Elano slotted the subsequent penalty home to make it 1-1.

Elano nearly put City in front on 43 minutes but the Brazilian’s free-kick came back off the woodwork. However, within five minutes of the restart the home side deservedly went in front when Felipe Caicedo collected a pass from Stephen Ireland before firing home.

Another Elano free-kick four minutes later came off a post as City looked to level the tie on aggregate but City’s hopes of a comeback died when Richard Dunne was sent off for a second bookable offence after bringing down Ivica Olic.

Martin Jol’s side will now meet Bundesliga rivals Werder Bremen, who fought back to draw 3-3 with Udinese and move into the last four 6-4 on aggregate.

Gokhan Inler opened the scoring for the Italians and although Diego equalized for Thomas Schaaf’s side on 28 minutes, a brace from Fabio Quagliarella made it 3-1 for Udinese to level the tie on aggregate.

Diego’s second of the night on 60 minutes reduced the deficit and although the Brazilian subsequently missed a penalty, Claudio Pizarro managed to get on the scoresheet to leave the match at 3-3 on the night.

Dynamo Kiev booked their place in the semi-finals thanks to a 3-0 defeat of French side Paris St Germain to progress by the same scoreline on aggregate.

The tie was finely balanced at 0-0 after the quarter-final first leg in France but the Ukrainians took control from the start at the Valeri Lobanovskiy stadium in Kiev, scoring twice in the opening 16 minutes.

Ismael Bangoura opened the scoring after just four minutes with a low shot and PSG goalkeeper Mickael Landreau punched the ball into his own net 12 minutes later to hand the home side a two-goal lead.

Ognjen Vukojevic completed the scoring for Kiev, slotting home after Landreau could only parry an Olexandr Aliyev free-kick into his path.

Kiev now meet Donetsk after Mircea Lucescu’s side beat Marseille 2-1 to progress 4-1 on aggregate.

Fernandinho put Shakhtar in front on the half-hour mark an although Ben Arfa pulled one back for Marseille two minutes before the break, Luiz Adriano netted a last-minute winner for the guests.

The semi-finals take place on April 30 and May 7 with the final scheduled for May 20 in Istanbul. (dpa)

Home grows sweeter for Cavs in rout of Celtics

CLEVELAND (Reuters) – LeBron James scored 29 points and the Cleveland Cavaliers crushed the Boston Celtics 107-76 on Sunday to move within one win of the league’s record for home victories in a season.

Cleveland, 39-1 in its home arena, can equal the 1985-86 Celtics’ NBA record of 40-1 with a home victory over Philadelphia in Wednesday’s regular-season finale.

“Whenever you can get a record as a team or as an individual, you should be proud of it,” James told reporters. “We should be proud of what we did today.”

Although Sunday’s contest was a meeting of the Eastern Conference’s top two teams, the outcome was never in doubt after the league-leading Cavaliers (65-15) raced to a 31-9 first quarter advantage over the Celtics (60-20).

“It was really fun,” said James, who had 10 points in the quarter. “I looked up at the scoreboard and they were shooting 15 percent. It was unbelievable.”

The lead grew to 30 points on a James free throw in the second quarter.

James also had seven assists and four rebounds in 30 minutes of play. He scored his final basket on a three-pointer with 28 seconds remaining in the third period.

Four team mates joined the All-Star forward in double figures. Daniel Gibson had 15 points, Mo Williams and Delonte West scored 13 each and Zydrunas Ilgauskas contributed 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Paul Pierce led Boston with 14 points. Only two other Celtics finished in double figures. Glen Davis had 12 and reserve Mikki Moore scored 10.

Boston’s starting guards wound up with 11 points between them. Ray Allen scored six and Rajon Rondo had five.

Celtics coach Doc Rivers said he thought his players forgot how to play as a team.

“Every guy thought, ‘You know what? I am going to win this game for us tonight,’” Rivers said. “I told our guys I understand that you want to win, but that’s not how you win.

“You win by playing together. We have been such a great ball movement team, but we were not tonight.”

Stability, less inequality top wish list for polls

New Delhi, April 9 (IANS) Some leading public figures and intellectuals in India are hoping the coming elections will produce a government that can provide security and stability and also be more sensitive to social inequality.

Veteran journalist and political commentator Kuldip Nayar says he is ‘exasperated by the way elections are being conducted’.

‘Parties are highlighting trivial issues and campaigns are degenerating into personal abuses. I find no issues, no all-India party and no leaders. It’s all hotch potch – the money, criminalisation and the controversies,’ said Nayar, a former Rajya Sabha member.

‘The country desperately needs stability, but the whole process is about how to get seats and grab power. Real issues are not relevant.’

But he adds: ‘There are too many players this time. I think we are going through a churning process out of which something good will emerge.’

Mark Tully, writer and BBC’s former bureau chief in India, wants the April-May polls to throw up a government that will be stable.

‘I would like to see a stable government that would concentrate on improving the administrative system and follow a policy of inclusive development. The development policy should benefit all – and not just one particular segment of the population,’ said Tully, now a New Delhi resident.

The author of books like ‘No Full Stops in India’ and ‘The Heart of India’ said even if the elections produced a coalition government, ‘there is no reason why it should not last’.

Former army officer Mukul Deva, whose new book ‘Salim Must Die’ hit the bookstores this week, hopes the present United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government will stay. ‘What are the other alternatives available?’

The military thriller writer feels that political parties should focus on ‘economy and security as the key issues. And on education, health and defence service’.

Deva has been voting regularly since he left the army in the mid-1990s. He said the new government needs to strengthen the police and ‘enlist forces of better calibre as the police were a frontline defence against terror’.

‘One of the major tasks the politicians have on hand is to bring back all the money idling in the tax havens abroad. And those who channelled it abroad must be taken to task,’ Deva said.

Said veteran journalist and novelist Tarun Tejpal: ‘The new constellation must be far more sensitised to inequality and injustice. The country has deep inequalities. Millions are poor in our country.

‘Those representing the country should stop talking about Shining India because even 60 years after independence, our children are not being fed, not clothed and not sent to school,’ Tejpal, editor-in-chief of Tehelka weekly, told IANS.

Rama Krishnan, a professor of international relations at the Jawaharlal Nehru University here, hopes the election verdict will reflect the country’s diversity.

‘I want the diversity of the country to be represented in a variety of forms. And the parties must have a secular and democratic vision. The rule of law should not be questioned by any political party, and human rights should be respected even while battling terror. That is also the image India must project abroad after the polls,’ Krishnan said.

Fergie would like to play Barcelona in Champions League final

London, Apr.7 (ANI): Manchester United coach Alex Ferguson says that while he would be happy to see three English clubs in the Champions League semi-finals, he would like to play Barcelona in the finals.

The Manchester United boss rejected thoughts of another all-England final like last year’s in Moscow when his team overcame Chelsea in a penalty shootout.

The Blues and Liverpool meet in a quarter-final showdown with the winner facing Barca or Bayern Munich in the last four.

Arsenal could lie in wait for United in the semis if Fergie’s arch-rivals beat Villarreal.

But in a snub to Chelsea and Liverpool, Ferguson is only contemplating a showdown with the Spanish giants in Rome next month.

he Sun quoted him as saying: “Hopefully, we will get through to meet Barcelona in the final – and what an unbelievable match that would be. (ANI)

TN colleges pull out stops to retain talented faculty

CHENNAI: Self-financing engineering colleges and deemed universities in Tamil Nadu are breaking new ground in compensating competent and talented
faculty members. Moving on from a scenario where the teaching staff was grossly underpaid, many premier institutions are now rolling out incentives to attract, motivate and retain highly qualified faculty members.

From offering rent-free accommodation, free lunch and conveyance allowance, colleges are now luring qualified staff with special skill allowances, laptops at subsidised rates and shares in companies. All these and much more in addition to paying a handsome compensation package as per the revised pay scale fixed by the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), based on the Sixth Pay Commission’s recommendations.

The skill allowance or professional development allowance is a princely sum ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 25,000 a month. While some institutions pay Rs 25,000 to all professors with PhDs, others pay the skill allowance only to a core group pursuing research. A few colleges distinguish between engineering stream professors and science and humanities stream faculty by offering a lesser professional development allowance for the latter.

SSN College of Engineering, a leading self-financing institution near Chennai that is owned by HCL head honcho Shiv Nadar, is even offering shares from the company to faculty members. Sponsorship for higher studies and group medical insurance are other sops.

At G20, matters of economics and faith

AS THE heads of the nations and CEOs get together for the G20 summit in London on Thursday to discuss and find a way out of the global economic crisis, they will also turn to religion for help. Aside from the ministerial brainstorm, a string of “imaginative events” will be held to address the crisis, including a special interfaith session at the UK Parliament’s House of Commons, with “Role of Religion in Solving Global Problems” as the theme.

Spiritual gurus, including a cleric from India, will address what many consider the meltdown beast: greed. The speakers will include Anil Bhanot of the Hindu Council, UK, Maulana Umair Ilyasi, secretary general, All-India Association of Imams, and Bishop Riah Abu El-Assal, former Anglican Bishop of Jerusalem.

“Moral and ethical underpinnings are crucial for the stability of our society. Ethical practice is important in all walks of life.

That is why it was decided to have an interfaith series. It will be attended by politicians and business people alike,” Robin Marsh, head of UK-based Universal Peace Federation, which is facilitating the religious session, said.

Financial follies triggered the sub-prime crisis in the US, marked by tax-dodging, bonus-guzzling and pension-pinching activities. At last year’s G20 summit in the US, a Washington Declaration was passed.

Among other proposals, a 47-point action plan included strengthening transparency and promoting integrity in financial markets. The G20 was set up after the Asian crisis wrecked several so-called tiger economies in the 1990s, prompting world leaders to have a forum involving more countries for wider economic debate.

New Delhi-based Ilyasi said he would speak on Islam’s views on greed for wealth, while Bhanot will speak on Hinduism’s perspective of moral codes of conduct in daily life.

The 24-year-old, who appeared in US show The Bionic Woman in 2007, is said to be top of the list to star in the biographical movie that will focus on Jade’s meteoric rise to stardom.

The flick, which could rake in millions, will follow her through the years of being a dental nurse, applying for Big Brother and later bagging TV deals, writing books and getting her own perfume, reports The Daily Star.

It will also feature her bittersweet wedding to Jack Tweed and her christening alongside sons Bobby, five, and Freddy, four.

Other big names being considered are Ugly Betty star Ashley Jensen, 39, while Danny Dyer, 31, and Sean Maguire, 32, are being tipped to play husband Jack, 21.

Danny Hayward, who is a trustee of Jade’s estate, said: “Her story lends itself to a biographical film. She has captured the mood of the nation. We want to tap into raising awareness of cervical cancer.”

Producers on the project are said to be keen to keep an all-British cast.

A source said: “Nothing has been decided yet. But a number of names have been put forward, including Michelle and Ashley.” (ANI)
