Motor racing-Ferrari fined $100,000 for illegal team orders

July 25 (Reuters) – Ferrari were fined $100,000 by stewards on Sunday for the use of illegal ‘team orders’ in winning the German Formula One Grand Prix.

The governing International Automobile Federation (FIA) also said in a statement that the case would be referred to its world motorsport council for further consideration.

The team, whose drivers finished first and second after Brazilian Felipe Massa allowed Spaniard Fernando Alonso to overtake him, were found to have breached both the sporting regulations and code.

Article 39.1 of the sporting regulations states that “team orders which interfere with the result of the race are prohibited”.

Hamilton leads McLaren one-two in Montreal

(Reuters) – Lewis Hamilton held off his McLaren team mate Jenson Button to win Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix and jump to the top of the Formula One drivers’ championship.

Sports

In a repeat of the last race in Turkey, Hamilton crossed the line just a few seconds ahead of his fellow-Briton to leapfrog Red Bull’s Australian Mark Webber and Button at the top of the standings.

Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso finished third to join the two McLaren drivers on the podium while Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel was fourth and Webber fifth after a thrilling 70-lap race.

Hamilton’s second win in a row took him from third to first place in the championship with a total of 109 points. Button remained second on 106 while Webber dropped to third on 103 ahead of Alonso (94) and Vettel (90).

While there were no major crashes the race, back on the program after being left off last year, lived up to its reputation as one of the most enthralling races on the Formula One calendar.

Five different drivers held the lead as teams were forced into a strategic battle to keep their tires from falling apart on the street circuit.

Nadal halts Federer’s run as world number one

(Reuters) – French Open champion Rafael Nadal toppled Roger Federer from the top of the ATP world rankings on Monday, leaving the ousted Swiss tantalizingly short of equaling Pete Sampras’s record time as world number one.

Sports

Federer, beaten in the quarter-finals by Sweden’s Robin Soderling at Roland Garros last Tuesday, dropped to second just one week short of matching the American’s record total of 286 weeks as number one.

Nadal last held the number one slot on June 29, last year.

The 24-year-old Spaniard’s 6-4 6-2 6-4 defeat of Soderling Sunday handed him a fifth French Open title and also made him the first player to qualify for the season-ending ATP World Tour finals in London in November.

Soderling moved up one place in the rankings to a career-high sixth while Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro, who missed the French Open while he recovers from wrist surgery, dropped to eighth.

Hispania F1 team and Dallara part company

Formula One newcomers Hispania (HRT) will take over development of their car after ending a partnership with Italian chassis maker Dallara, the Spanish-based team said on Wednesday.

“HRT F1 Team, Hispania Racing, and Italian chassis manufacturer Dallara Automobili S.p.A have together agreed on amicable terms not to pursue their collaboration,” they said in a statement ahead of Sunday’s Turkish Grand Prix.

“Hispania Racing will continue to develop and improve the Dallara designed F110 chassis via its own development program,” added the team.

Dallara completed the car driven by Brazilian Bruno Senna and Indian Karun Chandhok this season after a late rescue of the cash-strapped team.

The car had been commissioned by Campos Meta, which was renamed Hispania after a takeover by major shareholder Jose Ramon Carabante in February. The team have yet to score a point in six races.

Capello to experiment against Mexico

Fabio Capello will rest key players and experiment with England’s more marginal World Cup hopefuls in Monday’s friendly against fellow finalists Mexico at Wembley.

The Italian, whose squad have been at an altitude training camp in Austria, said his four Chelsea players and Portsmouth goalkeeper David James would definitely not play in England’s last home game before the World Cup in South Africa.

“I think absolutely these five players don’t play,” the England manager told reporters on Sunday.

Chelsea played Portsmouth in the FA Cup final at Wembley last weekend.

With John Terry, Frank Lampard, Ashley and Joe Cole ruled out, and Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry recovering from an ankle injury, the way is open for the likes of Adam Johnson, Michael Dawson, Ledley King and Jamie Carragher to remind the manager of their talents.

“Some players will be important for me to know their attitude on the pitch,” said Capello. “I will experiment against Mexico.”

That could mean Wayne Rooney being used as a lone striker or a switch to a 3-5-2 system.

Capello said he more or less knew the 23 players he will take to South Africa but there was still room for late changes.

He added that he had no concerns about the state of the playing surface at Wembley.

England also have a friendly against Japan in Graz, Austria on May 30 before the final 23-man squad is selected.

Webber on pole for Monaco Grand Prix

Australian Mark Webber made sure of Red Bull’s sixth successive pole position after qualifying quickest for the showcase Monaco Grand Prix on Saturday.

Poland’s Robert Kubica split the two Red Bulls by putting his Renault alongside Webber on the front row and ahead of Germany’s Sebastian Vettel.

Ferrari’s Brazilian Felipe Massa completed the second row in fourth place.

His team mate Fernando Alonso, a two times Monaco winner, watched qualifying from the garage after wrecking his car in final practice. The Spaniard, second in the championship behind McLaren’s Jenson Button, will start from the pit lane.

World champion Button, last year’s winner on the metal-fenced streets of the principality with Brawn GP, just sneaked through to the third and final phase of qualifying and secured eighth slot on the grid.

Fernando Alonso will miss qualifying for Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix and start the race in last place after crashing his Ferrari in final practice, the team said on Saturday.

Kovalainen bids big at Monaco charity auction

Lotus Formula One driver Heikki Kovalainen was the biggest bidder at a Monaco Grand Prix charity auction, shelling out 300,000 euros ($381,100) towards an AIDS project in Cambodia.

The auctioneer did not name the Finn but the former McLaren driver told Reuters after the event on Friday night that he had made the bid, although multi-millionaire team principal and Air Asia airline boss Tony Fernandes was also present.

“It is my money but Tony pays my salary,” said Kovalainen. “I have been looking to do something for a long time. This is a good cause.”

The sum will cover half the budget of a project to provide 320 permanent homes for 1,760 people living with AIDS/HIV in the country.

Organisers said the Elton John AIDS foundation would contribute a matching donation.

The seven lots at the Amber Lounge auction raised a total of 520,000 euros for the charity, including 50,000 splashed out by an anonymous bidder on a pair of black and white diamond cufflinks.

Formula One drivers, led by McLaren’s 2008 world champion Lewis Hamilton, took part in a fashion show before the auction, attended by celebrities including former tennis great Boris Becker and actress Elizabeth Hurley.

Man City turn to Hungary’s Fulop to solve ‘keeper crisis

Manchester City have lined up Hungarian international Marton Fulop on loan from Premier League rivals Sunderland to resolve a goalkeeping crisis threatening their bid for a Champions League qualifying place.

A spokesman for the Abu Dhabi owned club said the 26-year-old was expected to join City for training later on Wednesday once the deal had been finalised.

Ireland international Shay Given, the club’s regular goalkeeper, was ruled out for the season after dislocating his shoulder in a 0-0 draw at Arsenal at the weekend.

The club’s reserve keeper Stuart Taylor is recovering from knee surgery which left only 23-year-old Gunnar Nielsen, who stood in on Saturday as the first player from the Faroe Islands to appear in the Premier League.

City also have Joe Hart on loan to Birmingham City but said they had failed to reach an agreement to recall him after talks on Tuesday.

Fulop is used to playing on loan — having had stints at Chesterfield, Coventry and Sunderland while on Tottenham Hotspur’s books and then joining Leicester and Stoke from Sunderland.

The Hungarian is expected to play against Aston Villa at home on Saturday. City have three games remaining and are sixth in the league, a point behind fourth-placed Tottenham and Villa and one ahead of Liverpool.

Mercedes switch Schumacher’s car for Spain

Mercedes will switch Michael Schumacher’s car for next week’s Spanish Grand Prix to try and get the seven times Formula One champion back up to speed, team principal Ross Brawn said on Monday.

“It’s not a new chassis per se, it’s a chassis we used in testing,” Brawn told Reuters at a fund-raising event for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution on the banks of the River Thames.

“The one he had got damaged during the first few races and we repaired it as best we could at the races. But now we are back at base we are going to re-introduce the test chassis and he will be using that in Barcelona.”

Brawn said the wheelbase would also be changed to improve weight distribution, and Mercedes are also planning a major aerodynamic revamp for the first race of the European season after four in the Middle and Far East.

Schumacher, a winner at Benetton and Ferrari with Brawn as technical director, is making his Formula One comeback at the age of 41 and after retiring at the end of 2006 with a record 91 race wins.

The German has been outqualified and beaten in all four races to date by team mate and compatriot Nico Rosberg, with concern mounting that Schumacher is finding it hard to replicate his form of old.

Schumacher finished 10th in the latest race in China while Rosberg was third after leading early on.

Hull’s Vennegoor of Hesselink recovering after KO blow

Hull City striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink will miss the Premier League relegation battle at home to Sunderland on Saturday after being knocked unconscious against Aston Villa on Wednesday.

Hull said on their website (www.hullcityafc.net) that the 31-year-old Dutchman was recovering at home after being taken to hospital for a CT scan.

“We are pleased to report that the scan came back all clear,” the club said. “Vennegoor of Hesselink will now be monitored daily with the hope being that he will return to full training late next week.”

Hull are 18th in the 20 team league and will be all but relegated if they lose to Sunderland and closest rivals West Ham United, who have a vastly superior goal difference, win at home to Wigan Athletic.

West Ham are three points clear of Hull with three games remaining.

FA dash relegated Portsmouth’s Europa League hopes

Relegated Portsmouth’s hopes of competing in next season’s Europa League after reaching the FA Cup final were dashed on Thursday when they were ruled out because they had not applied in time.

The FA and Premier League said in a joint statement that they had told the club’s administrators they would “not consider any late application for granting of a UEFA Club Licence for the 2010-11 season.”

Despite being 119 million pounds ($183 million) in debt and in administration, Portsmouth would have qualified for the Europa League by reaching the Cup final against Chelsea, who are sure to be in the Champions League.

However, the south coast club cannot take up the place without a UEFA licence and the FA had set a March 1 deadline for clubs to apply for one.

Portsmouth administrator Andrew Andronikou had said earlier this month that the licence had not been applied for but the club intended to do so.

The fifth to seventh placed clubs in the Premier League will now be eligible for the Europa League.
