‘Credit crunch-ed’ Bollywood to unveil its ‘thrifty’ side at Cannes

London, May 13 (ANI): This year round the Cannes Film Festival will witness the “thrift” side of Bollywood. Host of producers from the sub-continent have descended on the Riviera to woo global audiences with cheap Indian movies -flavoured with dashes of Western talent.

Among the titles looking for distributors is Teen Patti, a thriller featuring Sir Ben Kingsley, the British actor best known for playing Gandhi, and Amitabh Bachchan, the Indian superstar, as mathematics professors.

The film has been made on a meagre budget (in terms of Hollywood) of 5 million pounds, reports The Times.

The film’s producer Ambika Hinduja, a member of India’s wealthy Hinduja family, shot it in Mumbai, London and Cambridge.

According to Ambika, the project is “globalised cinema” – a genre epitomised by the darling of last year’s festivals, Slumdog Millionaire, made for 15 million pounds, but which went on to take 225 million pounds at the box office.

Other modestly budgeted Bollywood films like ‘Kites’ featuring Hrithik Roshan and Barbara Mori, an actress who has a massive following in Latin America, have equally soaring desires of broaching cultural walls.

Several other East-West collaborations likely to be discussed at Cannes, include Kambakkht Ishq, a rom-com starring Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor.

The film has a special highlight – it marks the Bollywood debut of Sylvester Stallone, who appears along with Brandon Routh and Denise Richards. (ANI)

Aamir Khan next on the list to be waxed at Tussaud’s

According to information from a source close to Bobby Khan, who supervises the ‘Bollywood’ segment at Madame Tussaud’s in London, the next Indian actor likely to be ‘waxed’ at the famous wax museum is Aamir Khan.

The source said: “Aamir is popular and a Bollywood A-lister. He is definitely next!”

While two of Aamir Khan’s contemporaries, Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan, already have their wax figures put up at Tussaud’s, Aamir, who had earlier refused the offer, might agree this time round, with Tussaud’s coming to India. Other well-known Bollywood stars on the to-be-waxed-at-Tussaud’s list include Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif.

A few days back, a wax structure of the Indian cricketing icon, Sachin Tendulkar, was installed at the museum.

The source also updated the news about Tussaud’s in India saying that Bobby Khan plans to bring the museum to Delhi first, before Mumbai and Hyderabad. The source said: “Bobby is working out the terms and conditions with people in Delhi. He may choose either Saket or Gurgaon. Work on it is slow right now because it’s election time and talks have been put on hold. But after May 20, things are going to move fast.”

Multi-talented actor Akshay Kumar has topped the list of income tax payers in the Bollywood industry.

On the celebrity tax payer list, the third position goes to Salman Khan with a payment of Rs 14 crore, while Saif Ali Khan was on fourth place, who paid Rs 8.6 crore as income tax.

More surprisingly, veteran star Rajesh Khanna remains to be among Bollywood’s highest tax payers, stood at No 5 rank after paying Rs 6.87 crore, ahead of Amitabh Bachchan (Rs 1.25 crore), who slipped to the 10th place from No 7 during the last year.

Single screens caught in the crossfire

Single screen theatres are not part of the on-going impasse between multiplexes and the United Forum of producers. Nevertheless, they will be hit as
hard, if not harder, by the strike. India has around 12,000 single screens, of which 11,000 are functioning. But with most producers unwilling to release their films only in single-screen theatres, the latter will not have any films to screen after the middle of April. “After April 17 even single-screen theatres will not get any new software to run,” says a trade source.

As of April 4, single screens across the country are running Anurag Kashyap’s Gulal, Bobby Deol-Nana Patekar flick Ek-The Power of One, the Bipasha Basu-Neil Nitin Mukesh starrer Aaa Dekhe Zaara; and Akshay Kumar’s Tasveer.

The manager of Chandan cinema in Juhu, who preferred not to be named, Mumbai said, “We got a decent initial for Tasveer. If the film sustains we will let it continue into its natural second week run that will go till April 16.”

But single screens and the Shringar chain of multiplexes will get two films on April 17, Kamal Haasan’s Hindi dubbed version of Dasavatharam and Paramount’s Monsters vs Aliens.

Another single-screen theatre manager says, “If this face-off continues we will also lose revenue. Along with the wheat the chaff also gets pounded. As it is, were having a tough time surviving and have to screen soft-porn flicks to survive.”
