Swedish pilots strike after wage talks fail

June 16 (Reuters) – Nearly 2,000 pilots went on strike in Sweden on Wednesday after several weeks wage negotiations with employers collapsed, leaving thousands of passengers stranded across the country.

Industrials

The pilots’ strike, scheduled to start at 0300 GMT and last for eight hours on Wednesday, will affect all domestic flights and a significant portion of international flights, airports operator Swedavia said in a statement on the Stockholm Arlanda Airport website.

It said Scandinavian airline SAS (SAS.ST), still reeling from the effects of a volcanic ash cloud from Iceland which grounded airlines across the region, would see its Stockholm-based non-intercontinental flights affected.

At least four airlines would not fly for the rest of the day, the statement said.

The Swedish Airline Pilots Association (SweALPA), representing some 1,900 pilots in Sweden, said the union was unable to resolve a dispute over wages with employers.

The union had offered to take a 10 percent wage reduction while employers demanded wage cuts of 20 percent, it said in a statement.

No further negotiations are scheduled. (Editing by Hans Peters)

Airhostess rape probe: Police want to go to Delhi, Goa

Mumbai, June 6 — The Powai police on Friday told the Andheri metropolitan magistrate’s court that they want go to Delhi and Goa to investigate the rape case of a 22-year-old air hostess in which a Jet Airways pilot was arrested. The police told the court that the reason for this was because pilot Varun Agrawal (27) and the victim had travelled there.

The Powai police on May 29 arrested Agrawal for allegedly raping the victim over a period of two years. The police said Agrawal was first introduced to the 22-year-old airhostess with same airlines in the year 2007.

The victim told the police that Agrawal entered into a physical relationship allegedly after promising marriage. Later Agrawal allegedly backed off from the promise and even allegedly threatened to throw acid on the victim’s face.

European flights back to normal Thurs – Eurocontrol

European air traffic was likely to be back to normal on Thursday after the end of almost all restrictions related to the spread of volcanic ash from Iceland, European air traffic agency Eurocontrol said.

Eurocontrol said in a statement it expected 28,000 to 29,000 flights to operate, with a small number of cancellations due to some limited restrictions and logistical problems of airlines.

“At the current time, almost all European airspace is available, with a few exceptions in parts of southern Finland, southern Norway, northern Scotland, and western Sweden,” Eurocontrol said.

BA, Iberia seal long-awaited merger deal

MADRID, April 8 (Reuters) – British Airways (BAY.L) and Spanish carrier Iberia (IBLA.MC) signed a merger agreement on Thursday, sealing a long-awaited deal to create Europe’s second largest airline by passenger kilometres.

Industrials

The deal, which creates a group with a combined market value of around $7.8 billion, ends the British flag carrier’s long pursuit of Iberia, and will allow it to emulate rivals Lufthansa (LHAG.DE) and Air France (AIRF.PA) who have successfully acquired smaller peers.

“The terms and conditions of the merger agreement are in accordance with the memorandum of understanding signed by both airlines in November,” the companies said in a joint statement.

BA shareholders will have 55 percent of the combined firm, to be headquartered in London, while Iberia shareholders are to get 45 percent.

The two loss-making airlines hope to fly the merged entity with 408 aircraft and 200 destinations by the end of the year.

The paper did not specify whether the tally was for gross or net orders.

The aircraft manufacturer has delivered 122 aircraft to airlines, including three A380 superjumbos, the paper said.

U.S. competitor Boeing (BA.N) has won 83 net orders in the same period, the paper said.

Haase casts doubt over air route deregulation

The federal Member for Kalgoorlie says the deregulation of air routes to Exmouth will do little to bring down the cost of airfares.

The Western Australian Government is considering deregulating some routes, insisting smaller destinations will not be adversely affected.

But Barry Haase says people travelling to Exmouth will pay higher fares if the Government forces airlines to continue to provide stopovers in Kalbarri and Monkey Mia.

Mr Haase says Exmouth deserves a direct service from Perth because it has worked hard to raise its profile as a tourist destination.

“Small regional centres need quite frankly to paddle their own canoe just as the population of Exmouth have done,” he said.

“Other destinations need to do the same thing and the industries want to ply those particular routes rather than being forced to do so by the Government, by regulation.”

ANA upbeat on recovery in travel demand

(Reuters) – All Nippon Airways Co, headed for a $693 million loss in the just-ended financial year, said its profitability has started to bounce back thanks to a recovery in travel demand, particularly in the high-margin business class segment.

Hot Stocks

The airline, Japan’s second-biggest by revenue, is also considering starting a low-cost carrier, its president said, eyeing growing demand among budget travelers.

ANA, like other global airlines, was smacked down last year by a sputtering economy and outbreak of H1N1 swine flu that led to the industry’s sharpest decline in passenger traffic in decades and sent Japan Airlines (JAL) into bankruptcy.

But thanks to a recovery in passenger demand in the past few months, ANA is seeing more than 40 percent growth in business passenger bookings for May compared with a year earlier and higher sales.

“Passenger bookings are showing double-digit growth for international operations for April and also May,” ANA president Shinichiro Ito told Reuters in an interview on Friday.

“A stabilized economy is seen creating more business travel demand. Some (passenger) inflow from JAL is also seen,” he said.

ANA, the third-biggest airline by market capital in Asia after Air China Ltd and Singapore Airlines, surprised investors last month when it forecast a bigger net loss for the year ended March 31 after the weak global economy and swine flu hit its revenues.

To return to profit in the year that started April 1, ANA is stepping up cost-cutting measures including slashing 1,000 jobs.

“The year 2010 is strategically important for us. We aim to return to profit, Boeing Co’s 787 delivery is scheduled and the expansion for Haneda airport is planned,” said Ito.

The industry association IATA said last month that airlines are recovering strongly from the crisis, as passengers, freight and pricing power return, though the industry is still deeply in the red.

LOW-COST CARRIER

ANA, a launch customer of Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner, has been eyeing a global expansion to strengthen its ties with Star Alliance partner carriers such as United Airlines and Lufthansa.

It aims to boost its international travel revenues by 68 percent to 357 billion yen in the year ending March 2012 from the year just ended.

ANA is also “seriously considering” the possibility of starting a low-cost carrier (LCC), said Ito, who says he is too busy managing the airline to go fishing — his favorite hobby.

“But we would first need to see whether the LCC model would really work in Japan. To operate an LCC, we’ll also need find airports that are open 24-hours-a-day with low landing fees,” he said.

LCCs have been on the increase throughout the world, but Japan has always been a difficult market due to high labor costs, limited slot availability at key airports and expensive landing fees.

Shares of ANA have gained 6.7 percent since the start of the year, in line with the rise in the benchmark Nikkei average.

Brit MPs warn terrorists one step ahead of airport security chiefs

London, Mar 24 (ANI): British parliamentarians have condemned airport security chiefs for failing to keep ahead of terrorists, and said ‘overseas weak points’ in airport security posed a serious risk to the country.

The all-party Home Affairs Select Committee accused airport security chiefs of being reluctant of aggressively adopting new measures.

The MPs said the Government’s approach was “wholly reactive” and involved “waiting for terrorists to demonstrate their new capabilities before implementing improved security measures.”

They warned that “overseas weak points” in airport security posed a serious risk to Britain. The MPs criticised delays in introducing new security technology such as Electronic Trace Detection systems, The Daily express reports.

They backed the controversial full-body scanners, which allow security guards to see passengers naked, and said in their report that privacy concerns “are overstated” and “should not prevent the deployment of scanners”.

Airlines and airports worldwide have been in the front line of terror threats as security dramatically tightened after the 9/11 outrages.

The MPs called for “more stringent” international standards in aviation security and more work on tackling terrorism at source. (ANI)

Defence exercise may hamper flights

Flights into and out of Newcastle Airport could be delayed this week due to military exercises at the Williamtown RAAF Base.

Airport CEO Paul Hughes says the runway will be shortened for most of the week to allow for the exercises which involve loading live ordnance onto defence aircraft.

Mr Hughes is urging passengers to check with their airlines regarding any flight disruptions.

“The runway’s shortened but the aircraft can still come in from one direction only, so unless they have a significant tail wind which would affect their operations they will be able to land safely but if we do get winds which are not favourable there’ll need to be some adjustments to the schedule,” he said.

“We’ll be asking people just to check with their airline to make sure there have been no significant changes.”

Airline strike fails to halt BA

British Airways cabin crew have moved into day two of their strike in protest against job cuts and changes to work practices.

But the airline says many of its passengers have still been able to fly.

BA says it is the biggest contingency plan it has ever launched – leasing planes from other airlines to keep two-thirds of its passengers flying.

BA says it has got off to a good start at Heathrow and Gatwick, but the union Unite claims some planes are starting to “stack up” on the ground as a result of the strike.

It has accused BA of wanting to “go to war” after talks broke down.

British prime minister Gordon Brown has condemned the strike, saying it is in no-one’s interest.

Given railway signal workers also plan to strike in coming weeks, political commentators say the action could damage Labour ahead of the election that is tipped for May 6.

British Airways strike leads to cancellation of thousands of tickets

London, Mar. 20 (ANI): Thousands of passengers had their flights cancelled on Saturday following the launch of a strike by British Airways cabin crew.

It is first such strike in 13 years.

After talks over cost cutting between the airline and union Unite, which represents cabin crew, collapsed on Friday, the troubled airline said it hoped to keep flights running for up to 49,000 passengers on both Saturday and Sunday.

Unite said that its 12,000 members were supporting the three day walkout.

At Heathrow, which is the worst affected airport, screens were set up to protect the identities of BA staff who defied the strike.

BA said it expected 60 percent of its long-haul services and 30 percent short-haul services from Heathrow would be running over the weekend while short-haul flights from Gatwick would be halved.

In a bid to keep the service run normally going, BA chartered planes from rival airlines, drafted in volunteer crew from among its other work force and rebooked some passengers on other services.

“I am deeply sorry. This is a terrible day for BA. Thousands of our staff will be serving you over the weekend. I am confident that we will be able to deliver a good service,” News.com.au quoted BA CEO Willie Walsh, as saying in his apology to passengers.

However, Unite claimed that two of the planes chartered by BA as part of the airline”s contingency plans were delayed by technical problems and that more than 100 complaints had been made by passengers about catering.

“We don’t want to strike but the company has been totally unreasonable and given us no choice,” one Unite member said.

Analysts estimate that BA has already lost more than 25 million pounds because of cancelled tickets and contingency costs due to the strike. (ANI)

PNG-Queensland business council fosters trade: Fraser

Queensland Treasurer Andrew Fraser says the State Government will continue to develop trade links with Papua New Guinea (PNG) despite the appointment of a special trade representative and the setting up of a new business body.

Former Cairns mayor Kevin Byrne has been appointed trade representative.

Mr Fraser, who is leading a PNG trade delegation this week, has also announced plans to establish a PNG-Queensland business council.

It will be chaired by Skytrans and Airlines PNG director, Simon Wild.

Mr Fraser says Government support for business will be needed in a challenging environment:

“There are always challenges when you’ve got the sort of development phase that’s happening here in PNG,” he said.

“But that’s why it’s so important that there is government involvement [and] guidance about the way business is done – about the opportunities and also about the challenges.

“That really emphasises that we want the people on the ground with the links into the business community to be the conduit to provide the links to open the doors to get get decisions that will see business done between the far north and PNG.”

Airlines blamed for tourism dive

Tasmania’s Tourism Industry Council says airlines are partly responsible for a recent fall in visitor numbers to the state.

The latest visitor snapshot shows tourist numbers increased by 2 per cent in 2009 compared to the previous year, but fell to below 2008 levels in the last three months of the year.

Daniel Hanna from the Tourism Industry Council says recent cuts to the number of airline seats have contributed to the result.

“People just can’t get here when they want to, or they have to pay more to do so,” he said.

“So we need to focus on working with airlines and our airports to try and increase the seats.

“We know Tasmania remains a desirable destination and we hope that can resolve some of the issues we’ve started to see in the last few months.”

Need ID card info, pay: Nandan’s revenue model

You can count on Nandan Nilekani’s entrepreneurial spirit to build a revenue model in a project that was originally believed would only add to the government’s budget.

The co-founder of Infosys Technologies has weaved in annual revenues of Rs 288 crore in the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), of which he is chairman – money that will part-offset project costs estimated at Rs 3,000 crore, and make it self-sustainable.

The unique identification number will authenticate an individual to private companies and public sector entities for a small transaction fee. The UIDAI proposes to charge user companies Rs 5 to verify each address, and Rs 10 for every biometrics confirmation, once the system is fully in place.

The UIDAI may also explore the option of charging beneficiaries of the cards to offset enrolment costs. The Authority estimates it may cost Rs 20-25 to enroll each resident, adding up to Rs 3,000 crore.

Nilekani told The Indian Express that “by providing identity authentication, the UIDAI will be taking on a process that costs agencies and service providers hundreds of crores every year”.

“The Authority will charge a fee for its authentication services, which will offset its long-term costs. Registrars and service providers will also be able to charge for the cards they issue residents with the UID number,” Nilekani said.

A physical verification of an address and other information about an individual generally costs a company between Rs 100 and Rs 500. The basic identity confirmation will be provided free to firms, which would merely generate a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ response to confirm the identity based on the UID number, name and an additional parameter. This service could potentially be of use to airlines to check in passengers.
