NHAI to widen Delhi-Agra highway into six-lane road

New Delhi, May 27 — Drive along the National Highway 2, commonly known as the Delhi-Agra highway, is all set to get better. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has signed an agreement with Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group-led Reliance Infrastructure to widen and improve 180-km long stretch of the highway. The project, which would cost Rs 2,960 crore, includes widening the road to six lanes and constructing service roads, pedestrian facilities and bus bays along the stretch. This will not only improve the drive along the highway, which is important from tourism point of view, but will also reduce travelling time between the Capital and the historic city, NHAI officials said. Senior NHAI officials said the concession period, during which the construction agency would charge toll from vehicles using the road, would be of 26 years and will also include the construction period.

As this road connects Delhi with Faridabad, Mathura and Agra, and also leads to Mumbai and other southern parts of India, more than 30,000 vehicles use this stretch every day and vehicular population on this highway grows by six per cent annually, an NHAI official said.

Philippine massacre suspects cleared of rebellion charges

The patriarch of a Philippine political clan and four relatives were cleared of rebellion charges on Monday but remain in custody on 57 murder charges connected to a massacre in the south in November.

Datu Andal Ampatuan, his three sons and a brother were among 24 people cleared by a Manila court due to a lack of evidence they had taken up arms to resist arrest after the government linked them to the killings.

Thirty local journalists, 20 civilians and seven members of a rival clan of the Ampatuans were killed by about 100 armed men while on their way to witness the filing of nomination papers of a candidate preparing to stand in elections, the country’s worst election violence.

Justice Secretary Alberto Agra told reporters the government would appeal against the decision of the Quezon City regional trial court.

Presidential spokesman Gary Olivar said more than 2,000 weapons and an undetermined amount of munitions and armoured vehicles were seized from the Ampatuans and their followers during eight days of martial law, giving witnesses confidence to testify against the clan.

“We continue to stand by the decision to declare martial law in Maguindanao, not only because there was credible evidence of rebellion, but also to expedite apprehension of suspects,” he told reporters.

Ampatuan, whose family has ruled the poor and troubled southern Maguindanao province for nearly a decade, was one of 196 people ordered arrested on murder charges related to the massacre by a different Manila court last week. (Reporting by Manny Mogato; Editing by John Mair)

Now, a permanent record of the dead in cyber space

Agra, March 17 (IANS) Dead bodies found along railway tracks, at road accident sites and in village wells in this region shall not be cremated without a record. They will now have a permanent abode in cyber space.

An NGO in the Taj city, ‘Help Agra’, Wednesday launched a website, www.unidentifieddeadbodies.in, which will show all available details culled from police records, along with photos of unidentified bodies.

What usually happens is that police do not wait long enough for the relatives or make extra effort to contact people who would know something about a dead body, Ashok Goyal, head of the Kshetra Bajaja Samiti which looks after the Taj Ganj cremation ground, told IANS.

‘For many years we have been collecting data and seeking assistance from government agencies but they did not respond,’ Goyal said.

‘If even one family benefits from our service, we will feel our mission has been accomplished. Our aim is to maintain a register of unknown and unclaimed bodies kept in mortuaries.’

The organisation will perform the last rites of unclaimed bodies according to their religion, if known.

405th installation anniversary of Sri Guru Granth Sahib

Agra, Sep 19(ANI): People of all religions and communities gathered to celebrate the 405th anniversary of the installation of the Sikh holy scriptures, Sri Guru Granth Sahib, at Gurudwara Maithan in Agra.

This was a significant landmark for the Sikhs, as the 275-year-old handwritten scripture, whose front pages are written with gold, was put on display for the devotees.

“The Guru Granth Sahib has the preaching or ‘bani’ of famous poets like Kabir ji, Guru Ravidas ji and Baba Farid ji. It is symbol of humanity and so people of all the religions have gathered here to celebrate the ‘Prakash Parv’, the installation ceremony together,” said Kanwldeep Singh, President of Sri Gursikh Sabha.

Also on display was a miniature scripture of Guru Granth Sahib, which has been preserved at the Gurudwara Maithan for the past 15 years.

“We have Guru Granth sahib of 1 X 1 inches long. The British for the convenience of Sikh soldiers especially designed the holy book during the First World War, as they could not carry a normal sized book in the battlefield. The miniature Guru Granth Sahib was printed in Germany. It was kept in a silver box,” said Gyani Kashmir Singh, head Granthi of Gurudwara Maithan.

To mark the anniversary of the installation of Guru Granth Sahib, special prayers were also held in the Gurudwara premises, which once the house of Mai jassi that was visited by Guru Sri Tegh Bahadur.he gurudwara is currently undergoing renovation and will be expanded to facilitate the large number of devotees visiting the shrine.

A total of 20 million dollars will be spent on renovation and construction of new Gurudwara, a 100-bed hospital and a community hall.

Gurudwara Maithan also upheld the tradition of Langar, which has been followed over the centuries. Guru Arjan Dev and Mata Ganga set the precedent of preparing and serving food to the hungry, in the langar hall, where all social, economic and religious barriers collapse and all – the laborer, the lord, the peasant and the prince, are treated alike and served the same food in the same manner.

This is a practice of great social significance, and it is the key to the understanding of Sikhism. By Brijesh Sharma (ANI)

High pollution level in Yamuna River kills thousands of fish

Agra, Sept 18 (ANI): High level of pollution in the Yamuna River is killing thousands of fish in Agra.

The river is already in a pathetic condition with its water unfit for even bathing, leave alone drinking. Adding to its deplorable state are the hundreds of dead fish floating on the surface of the river.

Residents are concerned as some have been collecting these fish and selling them in the market which could lead to hazardous results and even spread of diseases.

Due to the discharge of untreated effluents upstream from open drains and barrages, the quality of water has deteriorated drastically.

“The chemicals mixed with the river water are the cause for the fish dying in the river in large numbers. It is unfortunate that the residents living on banks of the river are taking these fish and selling them in the market. This could lead to spread of diseases,” said Deepak Kahre, a counselor.

Some of the fish that have died are really big in size, luring the residents more into taking and selling them.

“We have been seeing that numerous fish are dying, Some of them are really big, that could weigh two to two and half kilogram even,” said Danish, a resident.

According to a Central Pollution Control Board report, around 70 per cent of the pollution in the Yamuna is human excrement.

A major pollutant of Yamuna is Delhi, which contributes 3,296 MLD (million litres per day) of sewage falling into the river. Only half of the sewage produced in Delhi is treated effectively.

Sewage discharge from Delhi and major towns like Mathura, Vrindavan and Agra has irreversibly altered its ecology. The river has been termed as incapable of supporting any aquatic life whatsoever.

Environmentalists have also been highlighting the damage caused to human health by allowing the discharged sewage to re-enter the human food chain via the agricultural produce watered by it in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.

The Yamuna Action Plan started in 1993 with the aim of conserving the river has met with little success, despite billions being spent on it. By Brijesh Kumar Singh (ANI)

Hundreds take part in ‘Ram Baraat’ in Agra

Agra, Sept 17 (ANI): Hundreds of people here took part in ‘Ram Baraat’, which is a part of the Ramlila celebrations.

Jeetander Chauhan, a worker, who erected the decorations for the celebrations, said that people were happy that god was among them.

“We are feeling that Lord Ram has appeared among us. Hundreds of people have come to witness this famous god’s marriage,” said Chauhan.

Maya Sharma, a devotee, said that women were also excited about this deity marriage.

“I’m really feeling good that ‘Baraat’ procession of Lord Rama and Sita is taking place. We are feeling good that god himself is present here,” said Sharma.

Every year, a new locality is chosen in Agra and festivities last for three days and the area is elaborately decorated with lights and flowers. The area is given a major face-lift befitting the venue for the divine marriage.

The marriage procession sees marriage between saint Shaligram who represents Lord Ram and holy Basil plant, which represents Sita, his wife.

The place is lit up with thousands of lights and non-stop music. The cinema theatres run film shows throughout the night to accommodate the migratory crowd.

These three days are like a carnival when people from all walks of life come together to have a great time.

The history of Ram Baraat is said to be around 125 years old, when Lala Kokamal, a cloth merchant, started the tradition of three-day festivities, revolving around the royal wedding. (ANI)

“Nearly 160 USAF personnel and about 200 IAF air warriors will participate in the exercise,” said IAF spokesperson.

Samajwadi Party targets opportunistic Congress, but says will support UPA

Agra (Uttar Pradesh) Aug.21 (ANI): Concluding a three-day National Conference here on Friday, a sulking Samajwadi Party leadership accused the Congress of being “opportunistic” and announced a mass agitation programme against UPA government, but ruled out withdrawal of outside support to it for now.

Having lost in four Assembly seats where bypolls were held in Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party in a resolution also targeted the Mayawati Government in the state, saying it and the UPA were pursuing “anti-people” and “anti-national” policies.

It said that the Samajwadi Party had supported the Congress-led coalition at the Centre to weaken communal forces.

“But the government after announcing revolutionary steps to end unemployment, educational reforms and foodgrains support in 100 days, had done nothing so far in this regard,” it alleged, while announcing the agitation against the Centre and UP government in January next year.

However, party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, asserted that “there is no question of withdrawing support from UPA as of now.

“We will take to the streets against both Congress and BSP. We will launch a ‘Jail Bharo’ agitation between January 19 and 23, 2010 against BSP, during which both me and Kalyan Singh will court arrest,” Yadav told reporters on Friday.

The political and economic resolution cleared by the party’s national executive made no reference to SP withdrawing support from the UPA.

Asked about the results of bypolls to four assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh, where two seats were wrested from it, Yadav said, “this is not the people’s verdict. State government officials ensured BSP’s victory. They had arrested our cadre to ensure our defeat.”

The results are being seen as a setback for the party, which is trying to regain its position in the state after the 2007 assembly polls and the recent general elections.

“We want to make people aware why there is a need for an agitation against BSP in Uttar Pradesh. During this period, our party workers will hold meetings with the people at grassroot levels where they will highlight the weaknesses of the BSP government in UP,” Yadav said.

He also cited the ongoing farming season as a reason for the timing of the agitation.

The SP lamented India “kowtowing to foreign powers and sacrificing the country’s economic interests”.

The government, the party resolution alleged, had failed to boost agricultural production, control prices, take action against food adulteration, tackle unemployment and give Indian languages their rightful place in official and court work.

It criticised the US and other developed countries for their “double standards” on the issue of greenhouse emissions.

It also referred to the alleged attempts by China to disturb the flow of Himalayan rivers which could result in environmental disaster for India. (ANI)

India, US to hold joint air force exercise in October

New Delhi, Aug.21 (ANI): The Indian Air Force on Friday said that India and the US will hold a joint military exercise, involving transport aircraft and helicopters, in October.

“We are going to hold ‘Exercise Cope-India’ in October this year with the US Air Force in Agra and Chandigarh involving transport aircraft and choppers from both sides,” IAF officials said.

During the exercise, officials said, India would be represented by its Russian manufactured transport fleet of IL-76 heavy lift and An-32 aircraft along with its Mi-17s and Mi-8s.

The USAF is expected to include its C-17 Globemaster heavy lift and C-130J ‘Hercules’ medium lift transport aircraft besides the tandem rotor Chinook heavy lift choppers in the exercise.

“Indian and American Special Forces personnel will be air dropped during the war games,” they said.

The exercise can be a platform for the US to showcase its military hardware to India as the C-17 Globemasters and the Chinooks have been offered to the IAF to meet its purchase plans to augment transport fleet.

“C-17s and Chinooks have been offered to the IAF whereas we have already acquired six C-130Js for Special Operations,” the IAF officials said. (ANI)

‘I covered up for Advani on Kandahar,’ says Jaswant Singh

New Delhi, Aug.21 (ANI): Breaking his decade-long silence over the hijacking of an Indian Airlines plane to Kandahar in Afghanistan, former External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh on Friday sought to embarrass senior BJP leader L K Advani further by saying that he (Jaswant Singh) “covered” up for him (Advani) when he said that the former Home Minister was not aware that he was going to Kandahar with three terrorists in 1999.

He also said Advani was aware of the decision to release of the terrorists in exchange for freedom of over 160 hostages kept in the Indian Airlines plane that was hijacked.

“Yes, he did,” Singh told the NDTV news channel on Friday when asked whether Advani knew that Singh was going to Kandahar with three terrorists.

It maybe recalled that Advani had claimed a few years ago that he did not know that Jaswant Singh was on the plane with the three dreaded terrorists to Kandahar.

Singh was asked why he said during the election campaign that Advani did not know that he was going to Kandahar with the terrorists and whether he covered up for Advani.

“I’m sorry I did. I tried to cover it. I treated it as part of my continuing sense of commitment and loyalty,” he said.

Asked whether he regretted covering up for Advani, Singh told NDTV: “I don’t regret because that is the step I had taken. But it was part of an election campaign. How should I put it? I was being very conservative with truth.”

He said Advani could not have not known about the decision to fly to Kandahar.

“I announced it in the Cabinet. Yes, Advani was there, how can they (terrorists) be released from prison without the Home Minister consenting and signing pieces of paper? he asked.

Singh said he felt very hurt when Advani said what he did and he went.

“I went and told him. I was really hurt. Look I have travelled this route to Pakistan in every possible fashion, the Lahore bus, to Kandahar, to Agra, Chhatisinghpura, Parliament attack. But I have never tried to transfer responsibility. I have never spoken, it was very hurtful,” he said.

Singh also made a veiled criticism of Advani when he asked why the aircraft was allowed to leave Amritsar because once it left the “game was lost”.

“Who would be responsible for the aircraft leaving Amritsar. For 45 minutes the aircraft was on ground at Amritsar. All of you are fixated on Kandahar. I didn’t go to Kandahar because there was a good night club there. I went there because 166 lives were involved and the officers there asked me to consult if a decision was to be made,” he said.

He even asked Advani what the latter wanted him to say.

“He said you say whatever you want to,” Singh said.

Asked whether he would have expected Advani to stand up for him, Singh said “He (Advani) was not required to cover any misdeed. My going to Kandahar was not a misdeed. And I was not going on a holiday jaunt. 166 lives were involved.”

He said it was a sense of commitment to India that required to save whatever another colleague has done.

“You know what the comment means. I didn’t know. It’s a comment not on Jaswant Singh. It’s a comment on Atalji because there is a sense of collective responsibility of the Cabinet. We forgot ssentials.” (ANI)

Buddhist Circuit to be developed in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar

New Delhi, Aug 19 (ANI): Union Tourism Minister Kumari Selja has said that her Ministry will take along Uttar Pradesh and Bihar while promoting Buddhist Circuit for tourists.

She said that Buddhist Circuit is popular both among foreign and domestic tourists and all efforts will be made to make it a star attraction.

The issue came up during the meeting of Uttar Pradesh Tourism Minister Vinod Singh with Selja here today when the former called on her.

During the meeting, Uttar Pradesh submitted a project on the Buddhist Circuit to the Union Ministry for consideration.

Both the leaders discussed tourism related issues and Selja stressed the need to provide cleanliness and hygienic atmosphere at tourist spots in the state as the feel good factor among tourists will provide the state a chance to have more visitors.

She said, Public Awareness Campaign about cleanliness must be started in places like Agra where tourists come in large numbers.

She suggested that the help of corporate sector may also be taken in creating such awareness.

Selja also suggested to provide skill upgradation training to waiters, cooks, taxi drivers and other stakeholders to provide better experiences for tourists during their stay.

She said her Ministry is willing to provide training to instructors of the state in this regard, if such a request is put forward.

She also urged the state to work towards seamless travel for the comfort of the tourists as Uttar Pradesh is one of the key state in the Golden Triangle (Delhi-Agra-Jaipur), which attracts most of the foreign tourists visiting India.

Singh enlisted the efforts of the State Government in providing training to waiters, cooks and requested the Union Ministry to sanction a scheme of the State Government under which stipend for such training will be given to the beneficiaries.

He also sought help to have international airports at Agra and Kushinagar. (ANI)

Gilani regurgates Kashmir, spoils chances of a rapproachment

Sharm-el-Sheikh (Egypt), July 15 (ANI): Barely into the second paragraph of his speech at the 15th summit of the Non-Aligned Movement at Sharm-el-Sheikh, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani brought up the topic of Kashmir by saying “long standing unresolved disputes” were putting stress on international systems.

And, as if this hint was not enough, Gilani later in his speech said: “Durable peace in South Asia is achievable” and that it could only be “facilitated by the resolution of all outstanding disputes, including Jammu and Kashmir.” his was not a soundbite or an off the cuff remark, which a Zardari or a Musharraf might have made. It is a well thought out and planned statement made by the Paksitani Prime MInister, knowing fully well what the repurcussions would be.

He is well aware that relations between India and Pakistan are just about limping towards a restart and to use the ‘K’ word in such a situation is nothing short of twisting of the arm like the one seen during the Agra summit of 2001.

At that time, President General Musharraf came with all his bluster and confidence that he could convince the then Prime Minister of India, Atal Behari Vajpayee to put into the joint declaration that Kashmir was a disputed territory.

The then Pakistani delegation was all but convinced that they had been able to soften the Indian Prime Minister and even his powerful aide, Brajesh Mishra. And then, all hell broke loose when India apparently made clear to the Pakistani side that Musharraf was mistaken in making this assumption.

While most people on either side of the border believe that the “unknown hand” that worked to scuttle the Agra talks, was the then home minister L.K.Advani, it is still unclear who managed to withstand the enormous international pressure and tell Pakistan where to get off.

In the past two days, it has become apparent that the war of words over how and in what format India and Pakistan should begin talking is what is vexing both sides. Pakistan hasn’t forgotten the rap on the knuckles delivered by Prime Minister Singh to President Zardari at Yekatarinburg last month, when he said in the presence of the media that his mandate was to tell Pakistan not to allow its soil to be used by terrorists to wage war on India.

It was uncharacteristic of the Indian Prime Minister to make such a stringent remark, and sure enough, within a few weeks, the reasonable Dr Singh said: “Let me say that what I had said to Zardari Sahib, I had not intended to say that in the presence of the media. I simply forgot that the media were present there. It was not my intention to hurt Zardari Sahib’s feelings.”

But that kind of grace is not visible here at Sharm-el-Sheikh. Gilani is scheduled to meet the Indian Prime Minister for the first time tomorrow morning and a reasonable attitude could have furthered the cause of a fruitful dialogue at the very top.

But this speech of Gilani is a spoiler for sure. With the Pakistani press already saying that Foreign Secretary-level talks have hit a deadlock over the format for resumption of India-Pakistan talks, it is unclear what Gilani meant in his speech when he said, “There has recently been some forward movement in our relations with India. We hope to sustain this momentum and move towards comprehensive engagement.” By Smita Prakash (ANI)

Agra continues to simmer under intense heat wave

Agra (Uttar Pradesh), July 7 (ANI): Soaring temperature has made life miserable for people in Uttar Pradesh’s Agra city, as the city continues to reel under intense heat wave situation on Tuesday.

People who were earlier hoping to get some respite from the monsoon showers are now upset as there has been scanty rainfall in the region.

The scorching sun has aggravated the heat in the area and the temperature recorded in the past couple of days has oscillated between 43 and 44 degrees Celsius.

Tourists who frequent the city to visit ‘Taj Mahal’ have been forced to endure a tough time coping with the intense heat.

“It’s very hot and not so comfortable. Not so fine to stand here for few hours,” said Staniel, a tourist from Austria.

The unusual heat wave has forced people to remain indoors while the roads have been presenting a deserted look in the city. (ANI)
