PPP-S chief urges Pak Govt. to use surgical strikes against Punjab terrorists

Peshawar, Mar. 22 (ANI): Pakistan People’s Party-Sherpao (PPP-S) chief Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao has said that surgical strikes should be conducted on the basis of credible intelligence against terrorists in the Punjab province.

“Denying the presence of terrorists and ignoring the local facilitators of the terrorists in the country would not help the elimination of terrorist organisations in any way,” the Daily Times quoted Sherpao, as saying.

Sherpao also urged the Pakistan Government to produce all suspects arrested under the Anti-Terrorism Act before the courts.

“Security personnel had arrested thousands of people including the top leadership of the Taliban under the Anti-Terrorist Act 2009, but had yet to be produced before courts of law,” he said. (ANI)

SC extends stay on Kanshi Ram memorial construction

New Delhi, Sep. 18 (ANI): Expressing dissatisfaction over the Mayawati Government’s plea, the Supreme Court on Friday extended the stay order on its earlier ruling for stoppage of work at Kanshi Ram Memorial Sthal in Lucknow.

“The affidavit is not satisfactory. The question here has many, many burning issues,” it observed during a brief hearing in the case,” a Bench comprising Justices B N Agrawal and Aftab Alam noted.t said the question was whether one could spend so much of money from the state or public exchequer for the purpose.

“Suppose today the legislature decides that 80 per cent of budgetary allocation should be spent on such works of memorials and statues…is it not justiciable,” the Bench asked.

“Serious questions arise in this petition…the cabinet and the legislature have to act under the Constitution,” the Bench added.

The next hearing in the case is on October 5th, and the parties are asked to file their responses to the affidavit by September 29th.

In a detailed affidavit filed in response to the show cause notice issued on September 11, the state government had claimed it had the highest regard for the apex court and that it believed in carrying out its directions in “letter and spirit.”

However, media reports said construction activities were going on in full swing despite the court’s directive, following which the bench had issued a show cause notice. (ANI)

Sporting ties with India not possible right now: Jillani

Lahore, July 6 (ANI): Pakistan’s Sports Minister Aftab Shah Jillani does not foresee a restoration of sporting ties with India in the near future.

“I don’t think it is possible to restore bilateral sporting ties with India at this stage and in these existing circumstances,” Jillani told reporters in Karachi.

He said the government level ties between the two countries determined the sporting ties.

“As soon as conditions improve and official contacts are made the sports ministry will seek advice from the foreign ministry,” the Daily Times quoted him, as saying.

The Pakistan foreign office didn’t allow Pakistan cricketers to go and play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) this year due to the tense relations with India following the Mumbai attacks in November last year. (ANI)

Qadir summoned by Pak NA committee to explain reason for his sudden resignation

Karachi, July 4 (ANI): Former Pakistan chief selector Abdul Qadir has been summoned by the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Sports to explain his sudden resignation from the post.

The committee has asked Qadir to appear before it on July 14 to explain the reason behind resigning suddenly from the chief selector’s chair.

Sources said the committee would also discuss the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ijaz Butt’s decision to dissolve the national senior and junior selection committees.

Sports Minister Aftab Shah Jillani said that fingers have been raised on the PCB’s working in the recent past, and that the government was concerned about the matter and would take necessary action regarding it.

“What can I say on the performance of the Board. It is before everyone and everyone is worried and has pointed out flaws. What more can I add to this?” The Dawn quoted Jillani, as saying.

Jillani said he does not want to comment more on the issue, as allegations have also been made against him for interfering in PCB’s internal matters.

“I was offered the post of PCB Chairman but I turned it down. I don’t want to hold any position in the Board. But definitely I would like to see improvement in its working. Hopefully when the new constitution is implemented it will reduce discretionary powers of the chairman and give more authority to the governing council members,” he added.

Meawhile, Qadir has blamed team manager Yawar Saeed and coach Intikhab Alam of ruining Pakistan cricket.

Qadir said that both Saeed and Alam were taking the team towards disaster.

He also revealed that captain Younis Khan had told him that Alam should not be a part of the team selection procedure, during the one-day series against Australia in the United Arab Emirates (UAE),. (ANI)

Now, Sarfaraz bays for PCB boss Butt and his cronies’ blood

Islamabad, July 1 (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairperson Ijaz Butt is under attack from all spheres.

After the sports minister Pir Aftab Jilani held the PCB’s top brass responsible for losing the hosting rights of 2011 World Cup, former Test cricketer Sarfaraz Nawaz has now criticized Butt and his close aides for the persistent mismanagement in the board.

Nawaz said Butt and his associates were trying to cash on Pakistan’s World T20 win for their own benefit.

“Ijaz Butt and his cronies are trying to misuse the Twenty20 World Cup victory to save their seats. There is no role of Ijaz and his management in the victory of the national team but they are trying to take credit,” The Daily Times quoted Nawaz, as saying.

Nawaz also lashed out at coach Intikhab Alam and manager Yawar Saeed, and said both of them are involved in ‘dirty politics’ in the team.

He claimed that captain Younis Khan has problems with the coach and asked for a change.

“As far as I know, Younis has asked for a change of coach and his demand should be accepted now especially when he has proved his leadership abilities by gifting the nation the World Cup,” he said.

Nawaz was particularly furious over the PCB’s failure to save 2011 World Cup matches from being shifted out from Pakistan.

“The PCB could not save the World Cup 2011 matches and presently it has no support in international cricket community. Even countries like Bangladesh and India, which were our allies in the past, have deceived us. What else the present management wants to give to Pakistan cricket,” he said.

Nawaz urged the government to replace the PCB’s top management with ‘young and energetic’ professionals. (ANI)

Pak govt. holds PCB responsible for losing hosting rights of 2011 World Cup

Islamabad, July 1 (ANI) : The Pakistan government has blamed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for the International Cricket Council’ s (ICC) decision to shift 2011 World Cup matches from the country.

Pointing fingers towards the PCB chief Ijaz Butt, Sports Minister Pir Aftab Jilani said those who run the matters of PCB are responsible for losing the rights of hosting World Cup 2011 matches.

“Of course, the one who is running the show of Pakistan cricket is responsible for this shift,” The Daily Times quoted Jilani, as saying.

The ICC had decided not to host any World Cup matches in Pakistan following the brazen terrorist attack on the visiting Sri Lanka cricket team in Lahore in March.

Later, the apex cricket committee awarded all the 14 matches, which Pakistan had to host earlier, to the other three host nations India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. (ANI)

Taliban to return to carry on its fight as Pak Army’s offensive lacks credibility: NYT

New York, June 28 (ANI): The Pakistan Army has been boasting of success against the Taliban and other extremists, and claims that it has flushed the insurgents out, besides killing scores of them during its offensive in the Swat and Malakand Divisions, but a closer look at the region where the military operation purportedly resulted in death of several militants presents a different picture, casting serious questions over the Army’s claims.

While the military has been claiming being engaged in a stiff battle with the Taliban, no such signs are visible in the region, which clearly suggests that the insurgents have just melted into the local population here, only to remerge and fight another day, The New York Times reports.

Analysts also believe that amid the claims of the military of sanitizing scores of militants, it has failed to provide any proof of it, which raises serious doubts.

The military operation which has rendered over three million people homeless in the region, and has won strong support from the United States, has amazingly failed to destroy the Taliban’s leadership.

The military has also failed to kill or capture even one top Taliban commander, experts pointed out.

“It was very disappointing that none of the commanders had been eliminated,” said a senior politician of the region, Aftab Ahmed Sherpao.

Then, there are also fears that the Taliban insurgents have sneaked into the rehabilitation camps set -up for the displaced people, and would in all possibility return to the valley.

“Most of the Taliban shaved their beards, and they are living here with their families in the camps set up for those displaced by the fighting,” said the mayor of Mardan, Himayatullah Mayar.

While the military is ready to initiate a fresh offensive in South Waziristan to target the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) chief Baitullah Mehsud, the Pakistan government is yet to announce a comprehensive plan to establish peace and normalcy in the Swat Valley to facilitate the return of the displaced people.

Experts believe that the military and the civilian government lack mutual trust, which raises serious questions about whether the authorities can secure Swat and other areas and keep them from being taken back by the Taliban, the report said.

“I’ve told the president and the prime minister and the chief of the army this is the time to act. Just take basic things and implement them. This is not talking rocket science,” said General Nadeem Ahmad, the commander of the Special Support Group of the Pakistan Army.

“If you don’t deliver, it will be trouble. You will come back and do the operation again,” Ahmad warned

The displaced people also want a surety from the military that they will be safe if they return home, as they are aware of the repercussions of the past episodes of deal-making with the Taliban.

Displaced people are angry by the indiscriminate shelling in civilian areas by the military, and have also raised questions over the success of the offensive.

“We had no problem with the Taliban. We’re here because of the military shelling. I’m a trader, and the thing that affects my life is the curfew,” said Umar Ali, a poultry trader from Qambar in Swat. (ANI)

PCB ‘restructuring’ shows 250 of its 544 employees redundant

Lahore, May 26 (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) may sack 250 of its employees out of the 544 employed by it at present.

The PCB officials said the lay-off is being carried out to cut expenses and restructure the organization.

“At present we have around 544 employees in the board and the idea is to cut the expenses of the board which means we will be laying off some employees,” said PCB chief operating officer Salim Altaf.

Now, the big question is that if the PCB could do with half of the staff employed by it currently, then what was the need of keeping them on board till now?

It almost seems to imply that almost half of the PCB staff is redundant, and had no work.

According to the Daily Times, the restructuring comes after Sports Minister Aftab Shah Jillani complained to PCB’s patron President Asif Ali Zardari, that the board’s chairman Ijaz Butt was not restructuring it despite being instructed to do so by higher authorities. (ANI)

PCB sends new constitution to Zardari for approval

Islamabad, May 23 (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) constitution has been sent to President Asif Ali Zardari for approval.

Confirming the reports, Pakistan Sports Minister Pir Aftab Shah Jilani said, Zardari, who is also the PCB’s patron, has been requested to approve the constitution as soon as possible.

Talking to media persons, at the sidelines of a domestic Twenty20 tournament’s post match presentation ceremony, Jilani denied having any differences with the PCB, saying he had never interfered in the board’s working and its management.

Commenting on the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) decision to shift the 2011 World Cup matches from Pakistan, Jilani criticised the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) for influencing the ICC’s decision.

“The BCCI’s role in this whole affair has been deplorable. The ICC should do justice with the PCB,” The Dawn quoted Jilani, as saying.

Terming players like Mohammad Yousuf and Abdul Razzaq as an ‘asset’ for the Pakistan cricket, he said they should be included in the national squad as they have terminated their contract with the rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL).

“Players like Yousuf and Razzaq are an asset for Pakistan and they must be saved. All those cricketers including these two and Imran Nazir who have revoked their ICL contract, must be inducted in our national team,” Jilani said. (ANI)

Pak Sports Ministry at loggerheads with PCB over arbitrary ICC legal notice act

Islamabad, May 13 (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) did not consult the government before sending a legal notice to the International Cricket Council (ICC) challenging its decision to shift 2011 World Cup games from Pakistan.

Pakistan Sports Minister Pir Aftab Shah Jillani said serving a legal notice to the ICC was purely PCB’s decision, and the government was not involved in it, as the board did not inform the ministry prior to taking such an ‘important’ decision.

“I would not comment on the legality of this issue but they should have sought our opinion before taking this big step,” Jillani said.

“Even if the PCB thinks that this step was a must, they should have taken it when the decision of shifting World Cup matches was announced,” he added.

Jillani criticized the PCB for its laid back attitude on the issue, and held it responsible for losing out the opportunity to host World Cup games.

“The board should have done their complete homework before attending that crucial ICC meeting,” The Daily Times quoted Jillani, as saying. (ANI)

Pak senators want review of peace deal with Taliban in Swat

Islamabad, Apr 23 (ANI): Pakistani senators have asked the PPP-led Government to revisit the NWFP Government’s peace agreement with the Taliban in Swat and also review Islamabad’s role in the US war on terror.

Debating on President Asif Ali Zardari’s address to the joint sitting of Parliament, the lawmakers said the federal government should ensure implementation of the recommendations of Parliamentary Committee on National Security.

The members also demanded of the government to review its foreign policy in the light of recommendations of the Parliamentary Committee, The Nation reported.

He said that the foreign policy of the country was changed under pressure of the US. “We have to transform our policy in the national interest if we want to save the country,” Fazl added.

“The US President has given statement that they could not win the war on terror, then how we could win it?” he asked.

He said that the writ of government had been put to an end in Swat as well as in the entire NWFP due to military operation.

Khawaja Muhmad Asif of PML-N said that his party supported Nizam-e-Adl Regulation for peace in Swat, but now the activities of the Taliban were being expanded from Swat.

He said that the country was facing extremism and terrorism due to wrong policy of Pervez Musharraf, and stressed on holding All Parties Conference including all stakeholders to address the issues of the country.

Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao demanded the government to ensure implementation of the recommendations of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security.

“The entire tribal region has become ‘No Go Area’ and there are several Parliamentarians who did not visit their respective constituencies as yet,” he said, adding that the government had totally failed to establish its writ in any part of FATA region. (ANI)
