Police pleased with holiday road blitz results

More than 7,500 drivers across Victoria’s Wimmera-Mallee were breath tested over the Easter weekend, but only nine people were caught drink driving.

Police say overall they are pleased with the results of Operation Aegis, one of the biggest ever operations targeting driving offences.

Police say four drink drinkers were caught at Mildura, two at Horsham and two at Stawell, as part of booze bus operations and random interceptions, but all had low blood-alcohol readings.

After testing 1,300 drivers at Swan Hill, Robinvale and Kerang, there were no positive tests but a 19-year-old man was charged with drink driving after he parked his car on the wrong side of the Borung Highway at Wycheproof and fell asleep.

Police say he returned a blood-alcohol reading of 0.185.

An Indian embassy release said the visit is taking place under the aegis of the Youth Exchange Programme between India and Kazakhstan. This was launched in 2008.

So far, three delegations from Kazakhstan have visited India. The first two delegations from Kazakhstan were from the prestigious Abai National Pedagogical University in Almaty. The third delegation comprised of students from the Seifullin National Agro-Technical University and Gumiliev Eurasian National University, both based in Astana.

The delegations from Kazakhstan have visited India for 15 days in the second half of January each year. They participate in the training and familiarization camp organized by the NCC under which they witness the Republic Day Parade and get an opportunity to call on the President and Prime Minister of India.

They also travel to places like Agra and Jaipur and acquaint themselves with the historical and cultural heritage of the country. This year, Professor Abdiraiym Bakytzhan, Rector of the Gumiliev Eurasian National University also visited New Delhi for five days and had an audience with the President and Prime Minister of India.

The current delegation is the second from India to have come to Kazakhstan. It comprises of students from 9 different states of India, including Sikkim, Jammu & Kashmir, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand and others. The delegation truly represents the ethos of “unity in diversity” of India.

Speaking at a reception hosted for the NCC delegation, India”s Ambassador to Kazakhstan, Ashok Sajjanhar, said the team should use the visit to expose themselves and interact with people from different cultural, economic and social strata of Kazakhstan including government officials, journalists, artistes, businessmen, singers, painters, political activists as well as members of the Indian community.

Ambassador Sajjanhar expressed his satisfaction at the successful manner in which the Youth Exchange Programme is being implemented. He said that such visits and interactions between the people of the two countries provide important and useful opportunities to strengthen people-to-people contacts and promote understanding and cooperation between the people of the two countries.

Ambassador Sajjanhar also spoke of the ancient, historical and civilisational links between India and Kazakhstan and said that the two countries are poised at the threshold of a significant upgradation in their relations in all spheres, including political, commercial, economic, cultural, social, scientific, technological, education and others.

NASA”s Mars rover gets smarter with age

Washington, March 24 (ANI): Reports indicate that NASA”s Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity is becoming smarter as it gets older, as it now has a new capability to make its own choices about whether to make additional observations of rocks that it spots on arrival at a new location.

Now, Opportunity”s computer can examine images that the rover takes with its wide-angle navigation camera after a drive, and recognize rocks that meet specified criteria, such as rounded shape or light color.

It can then center its narrower-angle panoramic camera on the chosen target and take multiple images through color filters.

The new system is called Autonomous Exploration for Gathering Increased Science, or AEGIS.

Without it, follow-up observations depend on first transmitting the post-drive navigation camera images to Earth for ground operators to check for targets of interest to examine on a later day.

Because of time and data-volume constraints, the rover team may opt to drive the rover again before potential targets are identified or before examining targets that aren”t highest priority.

The first images taken by a Mars rover choosing its own target show a rock about the size of a football, tan in color and layered in texture.

It appears to be one of the rocks tossed outward onto the surface when an impact dug a nearby crater.

Opportunity pointed its panoramic camera at this unnamed rock after analyzing a wider-angle photo taken by the rover”s navigation camera at the end of a drive on March 4.

Opportunity decided that this particular rock, out of more than 50 in the navigation camera photo, best met the criteria that researchers had set for a target of interest: large and dark.

“It found exactly the target we would want it to find,” said Tara Estlin of NASA”s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California.

“This checkout went just as we had planned, thanks to many people”s work, but it”s still amazing to see Opportunity performing a new autonomous activity after more than six years on Mars,” she added.

Opportunity can use the new software at stopping points along a single day”s drive or at the end of the day”s drive.

This enables it to identify and examine targets of interest that might otherwise be missed.

The developers anticipate that the software will be useful for narrower field-of-view instruments on future rovers.

Other upgrades to software on Opportunity and its twin, Spirit, since the rovers” first year on Mars have improved other capabilities.

These include choosing a route around obstacles and calculating how far to reach out a rover”s arm to touch a rock. (ANI)

Army hosts yacht training camp for school children

Nainital, Sep 18 (ANI): With an aim to revive yacht sailing in the country, a 15-day camp is being organised in Nainital district of Uttarakhand where in school children are being trained in yacht sailing.

Over 40 school students from the various parts of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh are taking part in the camp, which is being conducted under the aegis of Indian Army’s Central Command.

The Lucknow based Central Command is conducting such adventure camps for school children from over a decade.

The participants are receiving guidance in the yacht sailing by a team of 11 Army instructors.

“This yacht sailing is a great sport because these days it’s becoming extinct. Most of the people do not want to take part and people of Nainital are also not taking so much interest in yacht sailing. But I feel it’s a very adventurous sport and a great sport,” said Karel Caprini, a participant.

Many of the participants also feel that the training would open up new job opportunities for them.

“We have come here to revive this sport and as far as I can say it’s a very good sport and there is a lot of job opportunity in it. If we do well and learn the technique, we can make our career in the sports,” said Deep, another participant.

According to the Chief instructor of the camp, Mahip Singh the main motive behind the camp is to popularise the dying sport among youth.

“Basic purpose is that sailing is an international sport and the facilities available in Uttaranchal especially, which comes under the central command. We have got our sailors, who have participated in international levels and we got the expertise. So to give the young building up generation a chance to gain knowledge and finally if they have the interest, so excel in the sport. That’s why we have organised the camp,” said Singh.

Despite being considered as a sport at the international level, yacht sailing in India is still at its nascent stage. (ANI)

Police resort to cane charge to quell unruly youth seeking jobs in Chhattisgarh

Durg (Chhattisgarh), Aug 31 (ANI): Police in Durg district resorted to baton charge to quell an unruly protest by a bunch of youth seeking jobs at a local cement company.

Violence started when hundreds of local youth, under the aegis of the Chhattisgarh Swabhiman Manch (self-respect group), tried to storm the hotel where the company was holding interviews for various posts.

Police caned and chased away the unruly mob.

“Their way of protesting was against law. We asked them to protest in a lawful manner but they tried to barge into the hotel and when security personnel tried to prevent them they started bullying. In order to control them we used mild force and arrested some protestors,” said M. L. Kotwani, Additional Superintendent of Police.

Protestors accused police and local authorities of colluding with the representatives of the cement company.

“The manager of the JP Group is following a discriminatry against us and local authorities and police are cane charging instead of helping us. This is an injustice and we seek clarification from the state government,” said Mahesh, a protestor.

Lack of job opportunities for locals has in recent years triggered protests and even violence against outsiders in several parts of India. (ANI)

Chandigarh Research Institute develops medicine for clots busting linked to heart attacks

Chandigarh, Aug.8 (ANI): India has achieved a major breakthrough in medical research with the efforts of a Chandigarh-based Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH), a scientific research institute, in developing a medicine which prevents blood clots.

Its seven yeas of research recently led to the commercial launch of genetically modified recombinant streptokinase, a medicine that dissolves heart-attack causing clots inside blood vessels.

The drug is going through regulatory testing and expected to be commercialized by 2011.

Established in 1984, the Chandigarh-based IMTECH is the youngest among the 38 national laboratories functioning under the aegis of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research.

“This is a recombinant streptokinase which is much more economic as a result of the process by which it is made. So that the price of production of product is much lower than what it used to be previously. Therefore, this product has much more sustaining power and staying power in the market. The hope is that by the introduction of this drug the overall price the overall price of the clot buster drugs will go down. The clot buster drugs are extremely vital lifesaver drugs because when somebody gets a heart attack, within a few hours clot buster drug is given and about 30 to 40 lives can be saved. So it is a kind of SOS therapy, which before a patient can be wheeled into the hospital for bypass is done. This can save lives,” said Dr. Girish Sahni, Director, IMTECH in Chandigarh.

IMTECH scientists have also licensed an improved, new clot specific thromblytic to Nostrum Inc, USA and Symmetrics Biotech, India recently.

Another thrombolytic protein, Staphylokinase has been licensed to M/S Strides Arcolab Ltd., Bangalore.

IMTECH’s efforts have given India and the world four molecules that fight clots associated with heart attacks and prove that India does not lag behind in medical research.

“Actually in all research you get different kinds of problems. And if you are doing this work, then the challenge is to make it commercially viable. So you have to develop a system that can be used for marketing a product, so you have to optimize the cost. For example in case of genetic engineering, in case of developing fermentation process, in case of downswing processing. So lot of effort is required,” said Kanak Dikshit, a scientist with IMTECH in Chandigarh.

A study by California-based firm reveals that India has the highest incidence of heart related diseases in the world.

And if no initiative is taken to check the disease, the most predictable and also preventable among all chronic diseases, India will have 62 million patients by 2015, compared to 16 million in the U.S.

The percentage of people suffering from heart disease had increased from 1-2 to 3-5 per cent in rural India and from 2-3 to 10-11 percent in urban India.

IMTECH’s research in clot buster molecules will help provide an affordable treatment to heart patients. By Sunil Sharma(ANI)

Manipuri traditional dance form Goura Leela staged in Imphal

Imphal, July 12 (ANI): Goura Leela, a traditional performing art form was recently staged in Imphal.

The objective of this gala show, performed over four days, was to promote and conserve the unique dance from going into the oblivion.

Goura Leela, a traditional performing art of Manipur is based on the events that took place in the life of Gauranga Mahaprabhu, an ardent devotee of Lord Krishna and who lived in Nadia region of West Bengal, singing the praises of God and propagating Bhakti Yoga (devotion based worship).

Today, many Hindus in Bengal and Manipur revere him as a reincarnation of Lord Vishnu.

And the entire Goura Leela is based on the life and works of Gaurnaga Mahaprabhu.

Organised under the aegis of International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), Manipur chapter, the programme also aimed at infusing the ethos cultural understanding and love among the present day youth.

Many enthusiastic audiences from far-flung places came to witness the performance, which in the recent past had lost popular patronage.

“Children of our society nowadays, the freedom and happiness was taken away by the present atmosphere. So I feel in my mind immediately that … now is the right time to promote this Goura Leela, Sankirtan culture,” said Ajit Das, President, International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), Manipur chapter, Imphal.

One of traditional performing arts of Manipur, Goura Leela is believed to have originated during the reign of King Churachand during the 18th century.

The play can be categorised as an opera and is much influenced by Natya Sankritan (devotion through dance and singing hymns). (ANI)

Chennai hospital hostage drama involving ex-Guyana First Lady ends

Chennai, June 27 (ANI): The 48-hour-long hostage drama at Chennai’s Frontier Lifeline Hospital ended on Saturday after both the NGO and the hospital authorities reached an agreement to allow the ten children with heart-related ailments to return to Guyana on condition that the NGO would clear all medical expenses within the next six months.

The ten children were set to return to Guyana after heart surgeries. The West Indian republic’s former First Lady, Varshnie Singh, who is representing the NGO that sponsored the treatment, was earlier not permitted to leave the hospital following a dispute over the payment of bills.

Dr. K M Cherian, the hospital’s chairman, had earlier said that the patients would not be released. He said the patients had paid the money to the Guyanese NGO, but the latter had not forwarded the payments to the hospital.

The children and two adults brought by Singh under the aegis of the NGO, KidsFirst Fund, were about to leave the hospital on Friday night when they were stopped by hospital officials who insisted Singh settle the bills for surgeries before they left.

The Guyana-based NGO has been sending children to the hospital for heart surgeries for the last four years and used to settle bills after they return, Singh told reporters.

“We have come here five times before and have always paid later. This time, the hospital gave us a letter about a week after we arrived on June 9 asking us to pay,” she had said adding she had ignored it in view of the past practice.

Singh claimed that she could not meet Cherian as she was informed he had gone abroad for a meeting, but hospital authorities said she had avoided meeting him on arrival.

Hospital Chief Administrative Officer Jose Manavalan said a sum of USD 13,000 was pending from the NGOs last visit and the hospital had waived it. (ANI)
