Cynthia Nixon describes lesbian lover as “a short man with boobs”

Melbourne, May 11 (ANI): Cynthia Nixon has candidly described her lesbian fiancée, Christine Marinoni, as “basically a short man with boobs”.

“A lot of what I love about her (Christine Marinoni) is her butchness. I”m not saying I fell in love with her in a sexually neutral way. I love her sexuality – it”s a big part of what I love about her – but I feel like it was her.

“It wasn”t something in me that was waiting to come out. It was like, ”This person is undeniable”. How can I let this person walk by? Christine would probably kill me for saying this, but my daughter said one time that if you really had to break this down, (it looks like) she would be butch and I would be femme … but really once you get to know us it”s really the opposite,” The Daily Telegraph quoted the star as telling Advocate.

Nixon said her former publicist did not want her to come out of the closet.

“He just kept saying, ”It”s your life, and it”s private, and that”s it.” And we kept asking, ”That”s the whole thing? We never move past that? We”re at the playground with the kids, and pictures are taken of us, and we say, ”No, she”s my friend?””

Nixon said being gay was a political stance.

“If anybody, prior to my meeting and falling in love with Christine, had asked me about what I think about sexuality, I would have said I think we”re all bisexual. But I had that point of view without ever having felt attracted to a woman. I had never met a woman I was attracted to (before Christine). And maybe if I”d met her when I was 20, I would have fallen in love and only dated women. But maybe if I”d met her at 20, I wouldn”t have responded at all. Who knows?,” she added. (ANI)

Petition filed in LHC for Musharraf’s high treason trial

Lahore, Apr.24 (ANI): Yet another petition seeking registration of a high treason case against former President General Pervez Musharraf has been filed in the Lahore High Court (LHC).

The petition filed by an advocate Ilamuddin Ghazi requested the court to register a case against Musharraf on 15 different counts.

The petition states that Musharraf had violated his oath as an army officer by acting against the country’s Constitution and leading a coup to topple a democratically elected government.

In his petition, Ghazi also urged the court to prosecute Musharraf for removing judges of the superior judiciary in November 2007 and announcing ‘emergency’ in the country.

Ghazi also accused the former general of ordering the registration of false cases and torturing lawyers, The Daily Times reports.

In his appeal he also blamed Musharraf for planning and executing the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, and ordering the killing of Baloch leader Nawab Akbar Bugti.

Ghazi requested the court to direct the federal government to lodge a case against Musharraf under the Article 6 of the Constitution. (ANI)

Police say the former police officer died in his home last Friday afternoon, after falling ill during the day.

Mayor Campbell says Cr Gibbins was a strong advocate for people in local communities.

“He’s been a good worker for the Council – he worked tirelessly, he had a great interest in rural affairs, health services and sport and recreation. A strong advocate for better facilities for people,” he said.

Exploding deodorant cans spark fire

Police have warned a group of children after they were allegedly caught blowing up deodorant cans at a Kalgoorlie park.

Officers were called to Kingsbury Park yesterday after reports up to 30 children were causing small explosions by setting the cans on fire.

Police say the explosions started a number of small scrub fires in nearby bushland which had to be extinguished by fire crews.

Sergeant Matt Froude has described the children’s actions as extremely dangerous.

“We definitely don’t advocate this sort of behaviour, especially when you have members of the public go to the park because there is a skate park and slides and children’s equipment there,” he said.

“So the chance of injury to an innocent member of the public is certainly of paramount concern to us, so we certainly don’t advocate this sort of behaviour by anyone.”

Nepal’s decision to give MRP printing contract to India challenged in court

Kathmandu, Apr 7 (ANI): A writ petition was filed before Nepal’s Supreme Court on Tuesday against a government decision to award the contract for the printing of Machine Readable Passports (MRP) to an Indian government-owned firm.

Advocate Hem Mani Subedi filed the petition, stating that the decision to award the contract to India without bidding was illegal.

He said this decision would pose a threat to national security.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Nepal’s Parliament has already objected to the decision.

On Monday, Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal said the government has awarded the contract for political and diplomatic reasons.

He also said the government had failed to move ahead with a decision of the PAC tender process due to time constraints.

The PAC had quizzed both Nepal and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sujata Koirala over the decision.

Earlier, the PAC’s had directed the Foreign Ministry to call for a fresh tender bid to print the MRPs and hand over the contract on the competition basis.

Disregarding the PAC directive, the cabinet gave its approval to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to grant the contract to print MRPs to an Indian company on March 19, Nepalnews reported. (ANI)

Rail freight traffic returns

Rail freight traffic is being welcomed back to Tamworth, six months after fuel company Shell moved its freight onto road.

Tamworth Container Packing has secured a contract to ship 100,000 tonnes of softwood logs to North Asia.

The agreement will see two extra trains a week travelling from West Tamworth to Port Botany.

The independent Member for Tamworth, Peter Draper, says this re-establishes Tamworth as a hub for rail freight.

“This is really good news with five local jobs being created and a very large contract to carry timber from here down to the Port of Botany,” he said.

“However, there are other future opportunities in the pipeline as well. I’ve long been an advocate of getting freight and especially dangerous freight, and especially fuel, off our road systems and onto rail.”

Let in boat blast accused, says refugee group

A refugee advocate says three asylum seekers should be allowed to stay in Australia, even if it is found they were part of a plan to cause a boat explosion that killed five people last year.

The Opposition is calling on the Government to cancel the permanent protection visas granted to three Afghan men who the coroner said were part of a plot to disable the SIEV 36.

Coroner Greg Cavanagh found that crimes may have been committed in relation to the explosion, which occurred off Australia’s north-west coast, and referred his findings to the police and the DPP.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says it would be inappropriate to act before police have finalised their investigation.

Refugee Action Coalition spokesman Ian Rintoul says regardless of what police find, the asylum seekers should be allowed to stay in Australia.

“If there was a deliberately lit fire, they certainly didn’t intend for anyone to be hurt. It would have been the last thing on their minds,” he said.

“Desperate people do desperate things.

“It’s an absolute tragedy that lives were lost, but when you look at the whole picture the blame lies much more on the circumstances that those asylum seekers were placed in.

“So cancelling someone’s visa on the basis of that would be extraordinary.”

Euthanasia advocate Nitschke allowed into UK

Voluntary euthanasia advocate Philip Nitschke has been allowed to enter the UK after being held up at a Parisian transit stop by customs officials.

Dr Nitschke says he was held by British authorities after his passport raised an alert.

However he says he and his wife have now been released and are on their way to London to give workshops on assisted suicide.

“On review they’ve given us a strict 10 days in the country of the United Kingdom, and provided that we leave at the end of 10 days there won’t be any trouble,” he said.

“So I guess we’re pleased. It was a bit of a worry and a concern that we were stopped.

“It’s worrying that we were on the record, obviously, but nevertheless, now we’re in the country so that’s good.”

Euthanasia advocate Nitschke detained in Paris

Voluntary euthanasia advocate Dr Philip Nitschke says he is being held at a transit station in Paris, while British Customs officials decide whether to let him into the UK.

He is due to give some workshops on assisted suicide in London and interviews at the BBC in coming days.

Dr Nitschke says he is disappointed he has been stopped from boarding his train while authorities assess his status.

“They said it had come up as an alert on my passport and they needed to investigate,” he said.

“And that’s what’s going on now. They’re doing the investigation to see whether or not I can enter the country.

“This of course is a re-run of what happened a year ago, when we spent some 12 hours at Heathrow.”

Petrol bomb attack at court in Imphal condemned

Imphal, Sep 14(ANI): All courts in Manipur, including the Imphal bench of Gauhati High Court, had recently ceased work to protest against a petrol bomb blast inside the district and sessions judge court complex in Imphal.

The incident took place on August 27, when a petrol bomb hurled by some unknown persons exploded inside the Cheirap court complex.

However, no one was injured in the explosion as the complex was deserted at that time.

“I feel really bad. The court is a temple of justice and everybody expects justice from the court, but unnecessarily it should not be disturbed. If we are disturbed, how can we run the court?” said S. Jayenta Kumar Singh, a senior Advocate.

K. Manorama, another advocate, condemned the attack, and said: “We don’t want such incidents to happen again. This is a very bad and uncivilized. Throwing a bomb is not a solution to anything. We want to ask if this will help address their concerns. This is really shocking and we condemn the incident.”

Meanwhile, in an emergency meeting of the All Manipur Judicial Officers’ Association, it was resolved to press the state government’s law enforcing agencies to take up measures to ensure safety at the court complexes to prevent the repetition of such incidents in future. (ANI)

World’s first patient implanted with smallest rechargeable neurostimulator completes one year

Washington, Sep 12 (ANI): The world’s first patient to have been implanted with the smallest ever neurostimulator for chronic pain is celebrating the one-year anniversary of his procedure today.

One year ago, former U.S. Army parachutist Adam Hammond became the first patient in the world to have been implanted with an Eon Mini neurostimulator.

Adam got the chronic pain after a skydiving accident when his parachute deployed incorrectly, leaving him in a coma with life-threatening injuries, including a severed spine, broken femur, fractured pelvic bone, and torn aorta.

Although Adam recovered from his accident, he battled chronic pain that left him dependent on a wheelchair.

But, today, the picture has completely changed and Adam is active and exercising, studying for his law degree and no longer in need of a wheelchair.

Adam also went to Washington, D.C., recently to meet with representatives and advocate for pain legislation.

However, Adam is not the only chronic pain sufferers who have been helped with neurostimulation, an FDA-approved therapy that uses electrical pulses to interrupt pain signals to the brain.

Over 60,000 St. Jude Medical neurostimulation devices have been implanted in patients in 35 countries around the world. (ANI)

Bihar court issues warrant against Bal Thackeray

Bhojpur (Bihar), Sep 5 (ANI): A Sub divisional magistrate in Bhojpur in Bihar has issued a non-bailable arrest warrant (NBW) against Shiv Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray on Friday for his alleged uncharitable and inflammatory remarks against the Biharis.

Thackeray has made these remarks in his one of articles in Shiv Sena’s mouthpiece ‘Samna.’

Judicial Magistrate Rakesh Pati Tiwari issued NBW against Thackeray, after the later failed to appear before him in compliance with his July 7 order.

Earlier on July 7, Judge Tiwari issued a bailable warrant against Thackeray, but Thackeray failed to comply the orders by presenting himself or by his lawyers before the court to explain the stand.

Delhi High Court says judges asset declaration covered under RTI

New Delhi, Sep.2 (ANI): The Delhi High Court has on Wednesday said that the Chief Justice of India is a public authority under the RTI Act, which means that asset declaration is covered by the RTI under Section 8 1 (A).

This comes after SC judges had decided tp make their assets public. The only question was whether judges would entertain questions from the public under the RTI act.

A petition was filed by the apex court in the Delhi High Court challenging the Central Information Common Order which had questioned whether the judges revealed their assets to the Chief Justice of India.

Political parties and legal experts last week had welcomed the move of the Supreme Court judges to make public the details of their assets.

Union Law and Justice Minister M. Veerappa Moily said: “If they have come forward to disclose it, it is welcome. It is for the judges to decide how it should be done because what is best in the interest of the judges, they are the best judge.”

Welcoming the move, BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said: “I am afraid that this decision could have been taken earlier and the unfortunate controversy over the last couple of months could have been avoided.”

Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said the judiciary has avoided “further needless controversy”, but it could have been avoided if the decision was taken earlier, he said.

“It is a question of public perception and public confidence, trust, faith and in that light it is a step in the right direction,” he said.

Describing it as a very good decision taken by judges, Former Attorney General and constitutional expert Soli Sorabjee said: “I think it is a very good development. It”s better late than never.”

“I am sure their initial reluctance not to declare assets was not because they had anything to hide. They had misgivings that it may be misused,” he added.

Senior lawyer Harish Salve said: “The whole controversy had become very unsavory with this kind of suggestions that judges have something to hide they want to be above the law. I am so happy that the Supreme Court has risen to the occasion.”

Senior advocate Prashant Bhushan said the move would also now encourage the High Courts judges to make public their assets.

“It is absolutely a welcome move and I am sure it will also encourage the judges of the High Courts to publicly declare their assets and force the government to put up assets of government servants on public website which can be accessed by the people,” Bhushan said.

Terming the decision as “excellent”, senior advocate K K Venugopal said: “I think it is the greatest step that the judiciary could take because it has cleared all the clouds which have been hanging over the issue.” (ANI)
