Work saved Emma Thompson from depression

London, March 29 (ANI): Actress Emma Thompson says work saved her from depression during difficult times.

The Oscar winner, 50, has opened up about her life and how she began suffering from depression.

“I think my first bout of that was when I was doing Me and My Girl, funnily enough,” the Telegraph quoted her, as saying on Radio 4”s Desert Island Discs.

Thompson went on: “I really didn”t change my clothes or answer the phone, but went into the theatre every night and was cheerful and sang the Lambeth Walk.

“That”s what actors do. But I think that was my first bout with an actual clinical depression.”

When asked about a five-year period during the 1990s, when she starred in seven films, was nominated for five Academy Awards and split with her husband Kenneth Branagh, she replied: “I don”t think I did stay sane, actually. It was tough. I think I probably should have sought professional help long before I actually did, for all sorts of reasons.

“Yes, divorce, ghastly, painful business but also fame, in some ways a ghastly, painful business as well. You become slightly more public property in a way that”s not necessarily always comfortable.”

According to Thompson, scripting the movie adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, wherein she starred alongside Wise and Kate Winslet, helped her beat another period of severe depression when her first marriage broke down.

Thompson explained: “The only thing I could do was write. I used to crawl from the bedroom to the computer and just sit and write, and then I was alright, because I was not present.

“Sense and Sensibility really saved me from going under, I think, in a very nasty way.”

She said acting as “an escape from myself, which I”m ashamed to say I enjoy very much.”

Asked what she was escaping, Thompson said: “Oh, you know, the voices in my head. The constant “must do better”, “must try harder” plus “you”re too fat and not really a very good mother”.

“That punitive conscience is part of my psychiatric problem.” (ANI)

She said: “The truth is I’d just like to pretend that it (the money) doesn’t exist. It’s amazing how many children are aware from such a young age about money being important or supposedly impressive.

Watson is preparing to take a break from her acting career in order to pursue education.

She added: “It’s going to sound dramatic, but I feel like it’s going to be my life over as I know it. My whole life has been about Harry Potter and then all of that will shut down and I don’t know what it will be like.

The niece of acclaimed actress Julia Roberts said that she found the scene to be thwarting.

“It was kind of awkward and embarrassing. It was kind of an honest first time kind of scene, I guess. I think seeing it onscreen is more awkward actually. I saw it when I was with one of my really good friends, one of my best friends who I’ve known since I was in kindergarten and she couldn’t even watch.

She was burying her face in my shoulder,” Contactmusic quoted her as saying.

Emma also revealed that she wanted to get through with the scene in one go itself.

“When we shot it I was thinking, ‘This is really embarrassing.

I don’t know if I can do this. I don’t know if I’m ever going to do this again.’ But then, when you’re actually on the set, you just want to do it in one take and you just want to get it over with. So you just go out there and do it. I think that anticipation is almost worse than the actual scene itself,” she said. (ANI)

‘Sex symbol’ tag embarrasses Emma Watson

London, Feb 2 (ANI): Actress Emma Watson feels embarrassed being seen as a sex symbol.

The 18-year-old star, who rose to fame with her role of Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films, admits that she’s struggling to come to terms with the ‘sexy’ tag.

She said that stylists had tried to put her in mini-skirts, and she had been flooded with offers to strip off in films, but she vowed never to get into it.

“I’m not just getting my kit off for anyone,” the Telegraph quoted her as telling the Mail on Sunday’s Live magazine.

For the teen sensation, the idea of ‘sexiness’ is that the less one reveals the more people can wonder.

Watson said that paparazzi would never see her in revealing clothes.

“I find this whole thing about being 18 and everyone expecting me to be this object. I find the whole concept of being ‘sexy’ embarrassing and confusing,” she said.

“If I do a photo-shoot people desperately want to change me – dye my hair blonder, pluck my eyebrows, give me a fringe.

“Then there’s the choice of clothes. I know everyone wants a picture of me in a mini-skirt. But that’s not me. I feel uncomfortable. I’d never go out in a mini-skirt. It’s nothing to do with protecting the Hermione image. I wouldn’t do that.

“Personally, I don’t actually think it’s even that sexy. What’s sexy about saying, ‘I’m here with my boobs out and a short skirt…have a look at everything I’ve got’?

“My idea of sexy is that less is more. The less you reveal the more people can wonder,” she added.

The only arty director she would strip for is Bernardo Bertolucci.

“I have no plans to do anything for the sake of it, or to shock people,” she said.

“I might be willing to take my clothes off for a Bertolucci film, if it was a part that really made sense as part of my character.

“But I wouldn’t do it just to make a point, to move on from Hermione. I’d hate to be so tactical. I’m not just getting my kit off for anyone,” she added. (ANI)
