Beckham rallies England squad to win World Cup for Brit soldiers in Afghanistan

London, May 26(ANI): England footballer David Beckham has called on Fabio Capello’s men to secure World Cup glory in South Africa to honour the British soldiers serving in Afghanistan.

Beckham, who was recently in Afghanistan for a surprise visit to boost the morale of thousands of British troops serving in the country, delivered a dressing room speech to his England team-mates before Monday’s friendly 3-1 victory over Mexico.

England captain Rio Ferdinand said that Beckham told the squad to be inspired by the troops in Afghanistan.

“Becks came in the changing room and he was talking about his trip. He told us about the experience he had going over there and what is was really like. He said the lads do a great job for us,” The Mirror quoted Ferdinand, as saying.

“It is great that we are getting support from the boys in Afghanistan. With them being so far away they probably think we don”t really care about what is going on, but we do,” he added.

Earlier, Beckham, who is recovering from an Achilles-tendon injury, had spoken about his respect for the armed forces.

“I have nothing, but admiration for these young men and women and it makes me very proud to be British,” Beckham said.

Britain has around 10,000 troops in Afghanistan as part of an international force, largely fighting the Taliban. (ANI)

Beckham will be England’s cheerleader

London, May 24 (IANS) David Beckham will not be an apprentice to manager Fabio Capello, but his role will be that of a cheerleader on the England bench at the football World Cup being held in South Africa June 11-July 11.

Capello made it clear that Beckham, who has been ruled out of the World Cup after rupturing his Achilles tendon, will not be a coaching staff.

‘He is not coaching staff, absolutely not,’ the England manager was quoted as saying by The Daily Telegraph.

Capello was almost dismissive when mention was made that Beckham could contribute to tactical plans.

‘He will stay with us during the World Cup, but no coaching. You have to respect the coaches. He will not be like a coach. We have different projects for him, he is an ambassador for the 2018 World Cup and can go one or two times around South Africa. But it is important that David stays with us. He is one of the really important players who played with us. He is dedicated,’ Capello said.

Beckham’s role will now revolve around helping team spirit on a goodwill safari and, in dressing-room parlance, working as BBC – Balls, Bibs and Cones.

Capello wants Becks to join him in S. Africa as `England coach’

London, May 14 (ANI): Coach Fabio Capello wants David Beckham to join him on the coaching staff at this year’s World Cup.

Becks is currently out of the squad with a ruptured Achilles tendon, but Capello believes he could be of great help behind the scenes, The Sun reports.

Beckham, 35, however, will not be going to the squad”s pre-World Cup training camp in Austria, as he continues the rehabilitation from his injury. Instead, he will fly out with the 23-player party to South Africa on June 2.

The England 2018 bid team want to use the former skipper to help promote their campaign to host the World Cup in eight years” time.

Capello, though, will release Becks, for only one or two events and the coaching job will be his main focus. (ANI)

Vinnie Jones plans remake of cult soccer movie ‘Escape To Victory’

London, April 24 (ANI): British footballer-turned-actor Vinnie Jones is said to be planning a big-budget remake of cult soccer movie ‘Escape To Victory’.

Jones, 45, is hoping to use his contacts within the game to lure star players including David Beckham, Thierry Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo, Rio Ferdinand, and Lionel Messi to join his next project.

The actor wants to remake the 1981 movie, which starred Michael Caine and an array of top footballers – including Pele and former England captain Bobby Moore – as World War II POWs who take part in a propaganda-led match.

Jones aims to update the film by setting it in Afghanistan or Iraq – and hopes interest in the remake will rocket after the World Cup in South Africa this summer.

“We’re in pre-production, and I’m in the process of buying the rights to the title off Paramount films, so hopefully you’ll be able to see it in cinemas by Christmas,” the Daily Express quoted him as writing in his column for Loaded magazine.

“I’ll be in it, of course, but I’ll also be producing it, which is more exciting.

“The names being bandied around include Henry, Rio, Beckham, Wayne Rooney, Ronaldo, and Messi.

“I can tell you that I’ve approached some of the biggest names in world soccer… Is Beckham going to be involved? I certainly hope so,” he wrote.

And Jones has even devised a plan to accommodate Beckham’s Achilles tendon injury, which ruled him out of the World Cup.

“If Becks agrees, we’ll write it into the film that the enemy crock him, because he wouldn’t be fit for filming,” he added. (ANI)

Becks helping kids with homework, reveals Posh

London, April 24 (ANI): Former Spice Girls member Victoria Beckham has revealed that her husband footie ace David is helping their sons with homework as he recovers from his foot injury.

Posh, 36, who was attending a glitzy charity event, told GMTV that Becks, 34, is in “great form” after a torn Achilles tendon shattered his World Cup dreams.

“He’s doing really great. I left him on homework duty- so he’s there right now finishing off the homework, as I had to rush out,” the Mirror quoted her as saying.

“He’s doing really great. It’s incredible to have him home, he’s happy to be home.

“He’s on really great form, really great form. He’s hobbling around the house, poor thing,” she added. (ANI)

Serbia’s Dragutinovic set to miss World Cup with injury

Serbia defender Ivica Dragutinovic is likely to miss the World Cup with a torn Achilles tendon.

The 34-year-old, who has won 49 caps, sustained the injury in training for his Spanish club Sevilla and the initial scan revealed he would be out for the rest of the season at least.

“The preliminary result does not look good, he will undergo further examinations but as things stand now it is unlikely he will recover in time for the World Cup finals,” Serbian Football Federation (FSS) spokesman Aleksandar Boskovic told Reuters on Thursday.

“Of course we are hoping he will be fit because players can sometimes come back from injury more quickly than expected but it is a slim chance.”

Dragutinovic was an automatic starter for Serbia at left back and centre back in their unsuccessful Euro 2008 qualifying programme but lost his place for the World Cup campaign that followed.

Lazio’s Aleksandar Kolarov has become first choice left back and Real Zaragoza’s Ivan Obradovic, who has recovered from a knee injury, has plenty to offer as cover.

The Serbians also have a plethora of players to choose from in the centre of defence, led by Manchester United’s Nemanja Vidic and Udinese regular Aleksandar Lukovic.

Their Group D rivals in the June 11-July 11 tournament in South Africa are Germany, Australia and Ghana.

Kisnorbo set to miss World Cup

Australian defender Patrick Kisnorbo is set to miss the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa due to an Achilles tendon injury, according to his Leeds United club manager Simon Grayson.

The Socceroos defender was carried off in the early stages of his side’s 2-0 defeat to Millwall at Elland Road on Monday.

Grayson said the 28-year-old former Hearts and Leicester defender, who has been on the fringes of the Australia squad, now had little chance of featuring for Pim Verbeek’s team in South Africa.

“Unfortunately for Paddy, he has got a severe Achilles injury, which will rule him out of the rest of the season and probably the World Cup as well,” Grayson said.

“He’s been outstanding for us all season and I’m gutted for him because his dream was to play in the World Cup and it looks like it has been shattered.”

Australia has been drawn in Group D with Germany, Serbia and Ghana for the June 11-July 11 finals in South Africa.

Doctor prayed to God to heal Beckham”s Achilles tendon

London, Mar. 20 (ANI): The surgeon who operated on David Beckham”s Achilles tendon has revealed that he prayed to God to help him heal the former England skipper’s wounds.

Dr Sakari Orava said he begged for the Lord”s help in healing Becks” Achilles tendon, which he ripped playing for AC Milan.

“It wasn”t so easy to get back to sleep. But I”m a devout Christian, so my wife and I prayed. We said it is not up to us, it”s in bigger hands to see if things go fine,” The Sun quoted Orava, as saying.

Milan bosses made a frantic phone call to the world renowned Achilles expert on Monday.

Becks, 34, tore his tendon last Sunday.

He was operated at the orthopaedic surgeon”s clinic in the Finnish city of Turku the next day.

Beckham has been ruled out playing in the World Cup.

“There is mental stress and pressure, but you can”t show it. The job needs to be done. My hands were not trembling,” he said. (ANI)

Beckham back in England after surgery

David Beckham has arrived in England to start his recovery from an Achilles tendon injury that appears certain to rule him out of the World Cup finals.

“He’s in London for the next few days, then he will travel to Los Angeles to continue his recuperation,” Beckham’s spokesman Simon Oliveira said.

The 34-year-old midfielder tore the tendon in AC Milan’s 1-0 win over Chievo and flew to Finland for surgery performed by one of the world’s top specialists

“He is recovering fine, he has been walking with crutches. He can move around a little bit more every day,” doctor Sakari Orava said before the player left the western Finnish city of Turku.

“[His recovery]) is as expected.

“I said maybe it is not wise to fly over the Atlantic right now, to stay somewhere for two-three days,” Orava added.

“But the risk is small.”

Former England captain Beckham thanked everyone for their messages of support in a statement on his website.

“The operation was a success and I’d like to thank Dr Orava and all the medical staff who looked after me during my time in Finland,” he said.

“I’m feeling positive and now concentrating on getting back to full fitness over the coming months.”

Despite the surgery being hailed as a success, Beckham has all but been ruled out of the World Cup starting in South Africa on June 11 and FIFA president Sepp Blatter expressed his sympathy in a letter to the player.

Wishing him a speedy recovery, Blatter said he was sure Beckham would “get through this tough situation with your trademark dignity and courage”.

Milan said on its website that Beckham’s rehabilitation plan had been drawn up and would start immediately.

“For the first two weeks the footballer must not put pressure on the injured limb, and then he will do so progressively and partially for six weeks before doing specific therapy in the swimming pool,” the club said.

“The plan foresees a complete recovery in six months, after which he will be able to play again.”

Capello wants injured Beckham to join England squad

London, Mar 19 (ANI): England manager Fabio Capello has confirmed that injured David Beckham has been invited to the World Cup.

Beckham, 34, was ruled out of the finals after snapping an Achilles tendon injury while playing for AC Milan last Sunday.

England still wanted their former skipper to join the camp, but Beckham has still to decide whether to take up the offer.

“We have already asked David to come to South Africa,” The Sun quoted Capello, as saying.

“It could well be he is with us at the World Cup. It totally depends on him,” he said.

Capello also reminded Wayne Bridge that the door is still open, after the Manchester City star ruled himself out of contention following John Terry’s affair with his ex-partner.

The Italian said: “There is still time for Wayne but the whole issue remains very heated and recent.” (ANI)

Injured Beckham can heal in time to play World Cup

London, Mar 19 (ANI): The Achilles tendon injury of ace midfielder David Beckham can heal in time to enable him to play his fourth World Cup in South Africa, according to a top sports professor.

Beckham’s hopes of making the England squad for South Africa in June looked over after he tore an Achilles tendon while playing for AC Milan last Sunday.

Professor Greg Whyte, who helped fix Beckham’s metatarsal injury before the 2002 World Cup, said massive doses of collagen in pill form could dramatically speed up his recovery.

Ex-World Championship pentathlon silver medallist Whyte has used collagen, a protein, to aid tissue regeneration in the past, The Sun reports.

Pentathlon teammate James Greenwell feared his career was over after rupturing an Achilles tendon in 1994. But he was running in 22 days and three months later did a personal best.

Prof Whyte, who was once an injury adviser to Manchester United, runs a business selling collagen.

“It is definitely something I would recommend for David. It can help heal quickly. The World Cup can be done,” Whyte said.

A spokesman for Beckham, 34, said: “David has leading care and advice.” (ANI)

Becks ‘to soothe WC miss by planning baby daughter’

London, Mar 17 (ANI): David Beckham might have been ruled out of the World Cup, but he has set a new goal to battle back from his injury hell —a baby girl with wife Victoria.

The football ace, with a snapped Achilles tendon, is desperate to give the couple’s three sons Brooklyn, 11, Romeo, seven, and Cruz, five, a new sister.

David, 34, is expected to be out for at least six months after he was injured playing for AC Milan on Sunday night, reports The Daily Star.

And it is believed that wife Posh, who yesterday flew 6,500 miles to be at his bedside, is game for it.

Friends have said the couple will begin trying for a baby girl soon after he leaves the clinic in Turku, Finland, later this week.

“This injury is a nightmare for David, but he is not the kind of man to buckle under the strain. He knows some good must come out of it,” said a pal.

“A baby girl would make their family complete. They are both so excited and have decided: ‘Let’s go for it!’” added the friend.

Earlier, Posh spoke about her desire for a daughter, saying: “I’d love to dress a little girl up.” (ANI)

Beckham ‘no chance’ of Cup comeback

The surgeon who operated on David Beckham’s ruptured Achilles tendon in Finland on Monday (AEDT) has ruled out any possibility of the England star recovering in time for the World Cup.

Beckham twisted his left ankle during the final minutes of an AC Milan Serie A game against Chievo at the San Siro and limped off the field before being stretchered away in pain and in tears.

The 34-year-old midfielder flew to the western Finnish city of Turku in a private plane on Monday and was walking on crutches when he arrived at the sports injury clinic of Mehilaeinen hospital, where Dr Saraki Orava operated on him.

“The operation was done, it went well and it will take many months for him to recover,” Dr Orava said.

He added there was “no chance” of Beckham making the June 11-July 11 showpiece in South Africa for what would have been an English record fourth World Cup finals appearance.

“That is quite clear,” he said.

Beckham would stay in Finland overnight and could travel to either England or Italy either on Tuesday or Wednesday, the doctor said.

Earlier England manager Fabio Capello said he had spoken to the star midfielder to offer his my support.

“David is a great professional and has worked very hard to be ready for the World Cup, so missing it will be a big blow,” he said.

Capello later tried to give Beckham some encouragement by saying the player was in his thoughts for England’s Euro 2012 World Cup qualifying campaign, which is due to start in September.

“I hope he will be fit for the Euros because he is always one of the best players,” he said.

Beckham had admitted earlier on Sunday he was far from certain to win a place in England’s squad for the World Cup finals.

He joined AC Milan on loan in January in an attempt to convince Capello he could still make an impact at the highest level, but he has been left on the bench several times during his spell at the San Siro.

However, an injury crisis meant he was handed a rare start on Sunday only to suffer the major injury.

Beckham is England’s most-capped outfield player with 115 caps.

The injury could be the final twist in his football career but Beckham’s former Manchester United team-mate Andy Cole said the free-kick specialist would not want to retire in such circumstances.

“He’ll come back from the injury, I don’t think he’ll want to retire on this note,” former England striker Cole told BBC Radio Five Live.

Upset Beckham says he will be back

London, Mar.16 (ANI): An upset England mid-fielder David Beckham has vowed to bounce back from his Achilles injury, which has ruled him out of this year”s World Cup in South Africa.

“I am upset but want to thank everyone for their messages of support. I hope to make a swift and full recovery,” The Mirror quoted the 34-year-old, as saying on his web site.

Meanwhile, Dr Sakari Orava, who operated on Becks at the Mehilainen Hospital in Helsinki, has said that there is no chance of Beckham making it to the World Cup.

When asked, Orava said: “No, I don”t think so. Healing takes a long time. Beckham”s Achilles tendon was torn completely off, and we had to put together the two parts. He will probably be discharged on Wednesday. The operation was successful. Everything is fine.”

Becks picked up the injury while playing for AC Milan on Sunday.

Becks hobbled off his private jet on crutches as he touched down at Turku airport yesterday. He was then whisked to the hospital in a SUV.

Posh decided to make the 16-hour, 5,400-mile trip from LA after speaking to her distraught husband.

The 35-year-old scrapped a host of work engagements to be there.

A source said: “The entire family is absolutely broken by this.

Posh is expected to stay in Finland for 48 hours before returning to LA to finish a commercial shoot.

She will then fly to Milan with children Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz, to Milan for the Easter reunion.

England boss Fabio Capello gave the stricken star a boost by declaring he would not close the door on his international career.

He even hinted that he could be handed a place in the squad for the 2012 Euro qualifiers. (ANI)

“No chance” of Beckham playing in World Cup: Finnish surgeon

Turku (Finland), Mar 16(ANI): The leading surgeon who operated on England and AC Milan midfielder David Beckham, has said that there is “no chance” of him playing in this summer’s FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Beckham was operated on less than 24 hours after rupturing his left Achilles tendon during AC Milan’s Serie A game against Chievo at the San Siro on Sunday.

Talking about the injury, Dr. Sakari Orava said: “The tendon was totally torn.”

Even though the operation to fix it went “smoothly”, the 34-year-old will still be undergoing rehabilitation when the England squad flies out for their camp in Rustenburgto.

Beckham, who had been hell-bent on appearing in his fourth successive World Cup finals, will not even be able to kick a ball for three months.

“This is probably the lowest point he has ever encountered in his professional career. Words cannot express how devastated David is,” The Sun quoted a family friend, as saying.

“Mentally this is disastrous. He thinks he”s being punished for something he must have done wrong in life, which of course is ridiculous,” the friend said. (ANI)

Posh on her way to be with ‘shattered’ Becks

London, Mar 16(ANI): Injured England midfielder David Beckham’s wife Victoria is on way to Helsinki to be with the shattered star.

Beckham had a successful two-hour operation in Finland on Monday, less than 24 hours after rupturing his left Achilles tendon during AC Milan’s Serie A game against Chievo at the San Siro.

The 34-year-old is likely to head back to Milan once he has recovered from his operation, while Victoria will return to Los Angeles to pick up their three sons.

Victoria had already planned to take Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz to Italy for an Easter holiday with their dad.

The injury has come as a big disappointment for Beckham, who clearly wanted to be part of England manager Fabio Capello’s squad for this summer’s World Cup in South Africa, and had worked very hard to have a chance.

“David has been crying and is in deep shock. Football is his life and he feels like it has been unfairly taken away from him. He”s just so low,” The Sun quoted a friend, as saying.

“The only reason he carried on playing so hard in Europe and was away from his family for so long was to get to his last World Cup. He thinks it”s all been for nothing,” the friend added. (ANI)

Capello wants Beckham for England’s World Cup camp in South Africa

London, Mar 16(ANI): England manager Fabio Capello has told injured midfielder David Beckham that he can still be with the team for this summer’s World Cup in South Africa.

Capello has told Beckham that he is welcome to be a guest during the England camp in Rustenburg, as he believes the midfielder can have a positive influence on his World Cup squad by being around.

Beckham is out of the tournament after rupturing his left Achilles tendon during AC Milan’s Serie A game against Chievo at the San Siro on Sunday.

The 34-year-old had a successful two-hour operation in Finland on Monday, but he is not expected to play before September.

Capello also suggested that Beckham could recover in time to participate fully in the European Championship qualifying campaign, which will begin in September.

Beckham will be 37 by the time the tournament in Poland and Ukraine comes around in the summer of 2012, but the incentive of playing for England again has been spelt out to him as he begins his rehabilitation.

Doctors are optimistic that he can make a full recovery, and certain media reports have suggested that the setback will not force Beckham into retirement.

“David will play football again. There is no doubt in his mind about that. He is devastated he”ll miss the World Cup, but this isn”t the end of his career,” The Sun quoted a close friend, as saying.

Beckham will spend a couple of days in Finland before flying to London, where he will stay for around a week before his departure for Los Angeles. (ANI)

Achilles injury hurts Beckham’s Cup dream

David Beckham’s World Cup hopes hung in the balance after the England midfielder went off with a suspected ruptured Achilles tendon late in AC Milan’s 1-0 Serie A win over Chievo on Monday (AEDT).

Beckham was getting ready to kick a ball unchallenged when he suddenly pulled up and signalled to the bench despite second-placed Milan having used all their substitutes.

Beckham told the San Siro bench “It’s broken, it’s broken” as he came off. Team-mates said he was in tears in the dressing room.

“When the Achilles tendon goes you feel it straight away,” Milan coach Leonardo told reporters after his side moved one point behind leaders Inter Milan with 10 games left.

“The injury to David is upsetting. This injury lets me enjoy the win less.”

The 34-year-old Beckham, on loan at Milan from Los Angeles Galaxy chiefly to try to safeguard his England squad place for the World Cup in June, now faces a race to be fit for the tournament in South Africa.

Television analysts said Achilles injuries can take up to three months to heal, sometimes more.

England is well-covered on the right wing with Theo Walcott, Shaun Wright-Phillips and James Milner among the players able to play there. Tottenham Hotspur’s Aaron Lennon is currently injured.

Beckham, a former captain who played at the 1998, 2002 and 2006 World Cups, is England’s most capped outfield player with 115 appearances.

Seedorf strikes late as Milan cuts gap

Substitute Clarence Seedorf fired in a thunderous strike in stoppage time to give AC Milan a 1-0 win over Chievo and slash the gap with Serie A leaders Inter Milan to a point.

Inter lost 3-1 at Catania on Friday and second-placed Milan looked to have wasted its chance to put huge pressure on the stuttering leaders until the Dutchman found the top corner from the edge of the box.

Mid-table Chievo hit the post and had a goal debatably ruled out for offside and Milan’s David Beckham suffered a suspected ruptured Achilles tendon which threatens his World Cup with England.

“I’m very happy because tonight was tough. Inter know we are only a point away and we’ll fight for the championship until the end,” Seedorf told Sky TV after Milan got over their Champions League elimination by Manchester United in midweek.

“Inter’s loss allowed us to quickly forget the Champions League defeat,” added a jubilant Seedorf, who has not always been a favourite of the San Siro crowd.

Inter has won just one league game in six and held a nine-point lead in mid-February.

Third-placed AS Roma was held 3-3 at Livorno amid a flurry goals in the afternoon kick-offs, which summed up the poor standard of Serie A rather than its great excitement.

A Cristiano Lucarelli hat-trick for third-bottom Livorno meant Roma could only move to within six points of champions Inter with 10 games left.

Simone Perrotta and Luca Toni helped put Claudio Ranieri’s side 2-1 up and David Pizarro made it 3-2 before the Chilean hit the post with a penalty and Lucarelli levelled the scores from the spot on 71 minutes after Juan’s handball.

Palermo stayed fourth despite a 3-2 defeat at Udinese, which went seven clear of the drop zone largely thanks to goals either side of the break from striker Antonio Floro Flores.

Juve struggles

Juventus, enduring a nightmare season, could have gone above the Sicilians into the fourth and final Champions League qualifying spot but blew a three-goal lead to draw 3-3 with bottom side Siena in Turin.

Alessandro Del Piero scored his 300th and 301st career goals inside the first seven minutes with a close-range finish and superb volley before Antonio Candreva thumped in a third.

Siena hit back through Massimo Maccarone and Abdelkader Ghezzal, who then netted a leveller from the spot on 74 minutes after hapless Juve defender Zdenek Grygera fouled Maccarone.

Sampdoria is a point behind fifth-placed Juventus after a 1-1 draw at Bologna, whose injury-time equaliser looked offside.

Samp’s city rival Genoa, two points further back, enlivened its hopes of Europa League football next season with a thrilling 5-3 victory over Cagliari.

Parma beat second bottom Atalanta 1-0 while famous Roman club Lazio remain in deep trouble, two points above the relegation zone, following a harrowing 2-0 home defeat by Bari.
