Clarke wins Wisden award

Australia vice-captain Michael Clarke has been named as one of the Wisden Almanack’s Five Cricketers of the Year in the 2010 edition of cricket’s ‘bible’.

Clarke was Australia’s leading run scorer in last year’s Ashes with 448 runs at 64 but suffered the disappointment of finishing on the losing side as hosts England triumphed 2-1 in an intriguing series.

Clarke is joined in winning the accolade this year, an award a player can only receive once in his career and which is in the sole gift of the Wisden editor, by England Ashes heroes Stuart Broad, Graham Onions, Matt Prior and Graeme Swann.

Meanwhile India batsman Virender Sehwag becomes the first player to retain Wisden’s Leading Cricketer in the World award since it was inaugurated six years ago.

“In 2009, Sehwag broke Test cricket’s sound barrier by scoring at more than a run a ball,” explained Wisden editor Scyld Berry.

Sehwag also opens in Wisden’s 2009 Test XI, led by his India captain, MS Dhoni in a side also containing five players who featured in the 2009 Ashes.

But Australia captain Ricky Ponting, England batsman Kevin Pietersen and South Africa skipper Graeme Smith were among those dropped from the Wisden XI.

This year marks the 147th edition of Wisden which has been published continuously since 1864.

Army cadets put through paces

More than 100 of the country’s top army and air force cadets are battling for honours in southern Tasmania.

They’re taking part in a week-long event chasing the Adventure Training Award, the highest accolade a cadet can achieve.

The teenagers face a gruelling six-day test of their fitness, leadership and teamwork skills at the Buckland Military Training Area, north of Hobart.

It’s a tough task, but these cadets aren’t ones to shy from a challenge.

They were specially nominated by their local units, and had to pass a barrier test to assess their strength, skills and character, just to qualify to take a shot at the award.

Over the week, they’ll take part in communications, marksmanship, abseiling and endurance tests.

Shaunna Francis from Maitland, followed her father and brother into the cadets and it’s taught her skills she can use in her civilian life, such as navigation and first aid.

She’s looking forward to taking the award home to show her family.

“It’s been a bit tough, but it’s been enjoyable,” she said.

“There’s been a lot of people help me get through it.”

Harry Stevenson, from Perth, joined his local cadet unit as an after school activity.

“I’ve learnt how to push myself, learnt how to push through the pain barrier and if I can achieve this, what can’t I achieve,” he said.

He says he’s not looking to go into the armed services, but hopes he’ll learn more about team work and how to be a good leader.

Award co-ordinator Lieutenant Colonel Don Shearman says not everyone will pass the test and achieve the award but they’ll learn valuable life skills along the way.

“They do develop strong team skills, strong people management skills and strong values associated with community and volunteering,” he said.

The award assessment will finish on Friday.

England women’s star batsman Claire Taylor has been selected along with four male players as the magazine’s Five Cricketers of the Year for 2009.

It is the first time since the highly respected accolade started in 1889 that it has been conferred on a female player, the Daily Express reports.

Washington, Mar 24 (ANI): Ever since Reese Witherspoon has voiced a character in animated movie ‘Monsters vs. Aliens’, she has got a “cool” status in the eyes of her kids, who no longer think of her as a “gigantic dork.”

Although the ‘Walk The Line’ star has won critical accolade and an Oscar for her previous work, she hasn’t really impressed her kids, Ava and Deacon.

But after she lent her voice to a giant woman in the family film, she has suddenly become “cool” at home.

“They are rabid, and they wake up in the morning, like, ‘When can we see this movie? When is this movie going to come out?’ My daughter goes, ‘Just how many people can I bring to the screening? I invited the entire third grade!’” Contactmusic quoted Witherspoon as saying.

And the actress has confessed that she loves the attention the film has brought her.

“I’m really enjoying this moment because usually my kids think I am a gigantic dork, and they are so in love with me right now. It’s great,” she said. (ANI)

It’s official; Scotland has the world’s oldest golf course

Edinburgh (Scotland), Mar.19 (ANI): The Guinness Book of World Records has officially recognized the Old Golf Course at Musselburgh Links as the oldest in the world.

According to the Account Book of Sir John Foulis of Ravelston, the earliest game played on Musselburgh Links took place on March 2, 1672. He also mentions that “Mary, Queen of Scots reputedly played here in 1567″.

This documentary evidence was included in The Golf Book Of East Lothian, published in 1896 and written by John Kerr, the minister of Dirleton.

The Old Golf Course, which is now managed by SportPlus on behalf of East Lothian Council, was originally a seven-hole course. The eighth and ninth holes were added in 1838 and 1870 respectively.

Musselburgh Links also hosted the original Open Championships six times between 1874 and 1889.

Throughout the centuries it has been linked to golfing legends, such as Willie Dunn, who won the first unofficial US Open in 1894. John Gourlay, the feather ball maker, and John Carey, arguably the most famous caddie in the history of golf, are also associated with Musselburgh Links.

Robin McGregor, the secretary of the Musselburgh Old Course Golf Club, said all the staff was thrilled about the accolade. (ANI)

Upswing in foreign tourists’ at Assam’s popular Kaziranga National Park

Kaziranga National Park (Assam), Feb.23 (ANI): Assam’s popular Kaziranga National Park, which is home to the endangered one-horned rhinoceros, continues to be a major draw for tourists, both domestic and foreign, despite travel advisories issued by several countries against visiting Assam following blast incidents in the recent past.

While domestic tourists have increased from a million to over 3.4 million, the number of foreign tourists’ has risen from 7,000 in 2001 to 13,000 at present.

The national park is listed as a world heritage site.

The fact that today thousands of tourists visit Kaziranga is an indication of the park’s popularity.

Besides, the tourist influx has created new employment opportunities and helped the local people earn more money.

“Our elephants have been engaged here. All tourists who come here, get elephant rides. There is a great demand for it. Earlier, the seat rate was less, but now, we have increased it to Rs. 300 and with that amount we offer one hour safari rides,” said Diganta Baruah, an elephant owner.

“I’ve been in this business for the past two years. The government scheme is going on well here. Tourists are increasing day by day and it is benefiting the business of the local people. We hope that the government would come up with more new schemes and is going to be even better,” said Hari Gogoi, one local shop owner.

To conserve and protect Asiatic elephants, the park organizes an annual elephant festival, which is considered to be the biggest in the country.

The festival draws hordes of domestic and international tourists who are enthralled by the elephants and cultural programmes that are performed here.

The event is aimed at raising awareness about eco-tourism and the elephant’s struggle for limited resources with man. The objective is to spread the message of peaceful co-existence between man and animal.

“We must come forward to preserve these kinds of animals otherwise if we lose these kind of species day by day from this world we will be blamed by our coming generation. So they also have equal right to live in this world,” said D.D Bora, a forest ranger.

“This elephant festival, which is organize by the government is a good initiative. This is to preserve the wildlife. My wish is to take such programme to carry forward outside northeast as well to promote our region to other parts of the country. That ways people will visit our place and I’m very happy to attend this festival,” said Hashmi, ONGC.

Sixty elephants and over 20 cultural troupes from the state participated in the festival organised by Forest, Environment and Tourism Department in association with Golaghat District Administration.

Kaziranga has earned worldwide accolade and it has received several international wildlife awards for its exemplary conservation efforts. By Vaschipem Kamodang / Peter Alex Todd (ANI)

Online video advertising is now a critical part of the media mix; we’re delighted to be working with Media Contacts who are ahead of the game in their understanding of how online video can extend TV campaigns.” (ANI)
