Hungary bond yields jump as IMF/EU talks shelved

July 19 (Reuters) – Hungarian government bond yields jumped by 20-25 basis points across the curve in illiquid trade at the open on Monday after government talks with international lenders ended inconclusively at the weekend.

Dealers said yields could rise further still and prevailing uncertainty in the absence of an agreement with the International Monetary Fund and the European Union would continue to weigh on the market. [ID:nLDE66G0AP]

UPDATE 1-Kumba sees higher H1 headline EPS on prices, exports

JOHANNESBURG, July 9 (Reuters) – Kumba Iron Ore Ltd (KIOJ.J) said on Friday it expects first-half headline earnings per share to rise due to higher export iron ore prices and sales volumes.

Kumba, a unit of global miner Anglo American Plc (AAL.L) and the world’s 10th largest producer of iron ore, said headline earnings per share were expected to be between 1,900-2,055 cents, up from 1,076 cents in the comparable six-month period.

“The increase in earnings is largely attributable to an increase in export iron ore prices and a 10 percent increase in export sales volumes in the period,” Kumba said in a statement.

Kumba, currently involved in an iron ore supply dispute with ArceloMittal’s South African unit (ACLJ.J)(MT.N)(ISPA.AS), said it had accounted for revenue at plus 3 percent of cost to the steelmaker in determining earnings for the period in the absence of agreement on an interim price.

Kumba in February terminated the long-term deal under which it sold ore to ArcelorMittal South Africa at a discount and said it would then sell to the steelmaker at market rates from March. [ID:nLDE61P15S] (Reporting by Shapi Shacinda)

Russia,Kazakhstan agree customs union minus Belarus

Russia and Kazakhstan agreed to launch a customs union from July 1, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said on Friday, cutting Belarus out of the first stage of the union.

“We agreed to launch the customs regulations for the… union on a bilateral basis,” Putin told reporters at a briefing in Russia’s second city, St Petersburg.

The absence of Belarus at the first stage of the customs union indicates worsening ties between Moscow and Minsk, though Putin said Russia and Kazakhstan would be open to talks on Belarus joining the union at a later stage.

It was not immediately clear how the customs union with Kazakhstan would affect Russia’s talks on joining the World Trade Organisation.

Parents of Indian-appearance toddler unaware of his absence for 6 hours

London, May 19 (ANI): The callous parents of the three-year old boy who was found wandering on Sydney’s streets in a visibly distressed state, failed to register his absence for a full six hours.

The poor kid who was too young to even tell the police his name, had to go from street to street with child welfare workers in the hope of identifying his house.

Police assiduously searched for his home the entire day canvassing schools, pre-schools and childcare centres in the vicinity, but to no avail.

They drove around for 2½ hours before the toddler was able to point out his house, The Telegraph reports.

It has emerged that the parents of the boy both thought their son was with the other, and were unaware that their misconception could have cost them their son’s life. (ANI)

Woods can’t put timetable on recovery

Tiger Woods says the neck injury hindering his game has his schedule “up in the air,” but said he was trying everything he can to get healthy.

Woods also insisted his current neck pain has “no connection” to the car crash outside his home in November, a mysterious accident that heralded the start of a sex scandal that drove him off the golf course for five months and left his reputation in tatters.

“Zero connection, absolutely zero,” Woods said as he spoke to reporters at the media day for July’s Philadelphia National tournament scheduled for July.

Woods had said before that the crash had left him with a “busted-up lip and pretty sore neck”.

But he said his current problem, which forced him out of The Players Championship on Sunday in the first mid-round tournament withdrawal of his professional career, began when he returned from a five-month absence.

“It started bugging me two weeks before the Masters,” Woods said.

“It was just on and off. I thought it was just sore, no big deal. But as I kept practising it kept getting worse.”

Woods had said he feared the injury could be a bulging disc, but he said he has yet to have any further examination or treatment.

However, he said he was “trying everything I can” to get healthy and continue his pursuit of Jack Nicklaus’s record of 18 major championship titles.

“A lot is up in the air, which I don’t like,” Woods said, adding that he still wants to defend his title at the Memorial tournament next month, and play the US Open at Pebble Beach later in June.

Mandela may miss FIFA World Cup opening ceremony

Johannesburg, Apr 29 (ANI): Nelson Mandela, possibly South Africa’s most famous citizen and the country’s unofficial brand ambassador to the world, may not attend the World Cup opening ceremony on account of his old age.

Asked if the 91-year-old former South African president would attend, Chief Mandla Mandela replied: “Certainly not. My grandfather at this age is very elderly and we are not trying to intensify his programme. He”s said he would prefer to be at home.”

His family will take the final call at a date closer to the June 11th opening ceremony.

According to The Telegraph, his absence would be a setback for the organisers. Last week, Sepp Blatter, the FIFA president, said he was hopeful that Mandela would be strong enough to open the finals.

His decision to stay away from the ceremony has raised concerns over his deteriorating health, though his family members have reassured that he is in good shape. (ANI)

Capello can take England to World Cup glory without Rooney: Nistelrooy

London, Apr 28(ANI): Former Manchester United striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy reckons that England manager Fabio Capello can guide the Three Lions to World Cup glory despite Wayne Rooney’s absence.

“There is no one better in England than Wayne in his position. Wayne is a massive influence for England and can make the difference between the quarter-finals and scoring a goal and the semis,” The Sun quoted Nistelrooy, as saying.

“But if for one reason or another he can’t play, you know that Fabio Capello will find a way,” he added.

The 33-year-old, who had played under Capello at Real Madrid, believes Capello is one of the best managers in the world and he will prove his worth in England as well.

“I was so disappointed when he left. I told him that. I felt there was so much more in there for us if he had stayed. I really had that sensation and that”s what he has proven with England as well,” Nistelrooy said.

“I spoke to some of the English lads before he got to work and I told them, ‘He is going to turn it around, he is going to be unbelievable for England’. That’s what he does. He’s a successful manager and he achieves things,” he added. (ANI)

Pak team balanced enough to defend T20 World Cup title: Afridi

Lahore, Apr 26(ANI): Pakistan Twenty20 skipper Shahid Afridi believes the national team is balanced enough to defend their Twenty20 World Cup title in the West Indies, despite the absence of their most experienced fast bowler, Umar Gul.

Gul, Pakistan’s leading wicket-taker in the previous two editions of the Twenty20 World Cup, has been ruled out the tournament after he hurt his shoulder during a training camp at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore earlier this month.

“Umar is an expert of reverse swing. He could have been lethal on the slow pitches in the West Indies, but all the other available players are also equally good and eager to perform in the mega event,” The Dawn quoted Afridi, as saying.

He believes that spinners would be Pakistan team’s major weapon, and would play a crucial role on the slow pitches.

“Saeed Ajmal, Mohammad Hafeez and Abdul Rehman are all talented spinners and can play the role of match-winner against any team,” Afridi said.

He further admitted that being the defending champions, Pakistan would be under pressure to perform well and win, but said: “We have to learn to handle that kind of pressure to give hundred per cent.” (ANI)

Tiger Woods thanks Masters fans for support

New York, Apr 24 (ANI): Tiger Woods has thanked his followers for cheering him on during his return to golf at The Masters.

The New York Daily News reports, in a posting on his website Friday, Woods wrote: “I honestly didn”t know what to expect from the fans, but they were absolutely incredible from Monday through Sunday.

“It was unreal. They definitely helped me mentally to be more comfortable out there. I was hoping for the best. To get that type of warmth is something I did not expect and will never forget.”

Woods also talked out using “bad language” and adding that he”s “not perfect.”

“It”s tough when you”re in a competitive environment and in the flow of a tournament. I”m not perfect,” Woods wrote. “All I can say is I”m trying to do everything I can without losing my fire and competitive spirit.”

The sportstar also referred to his fellow PGA Tour golfers and the “distractions” that he caused them.

“It was also great to see all the guys,” he wrote. “They had been asked a lot of questions in my absence and handled the distractions very well. I appreciate their support, but it felt good to try and beat them again.” (ANI)

Pak suffer double blow as Gul, Arafat ruled out of Twenty20 World Cup

Lahore, Apr 19(ANI): Defending Twenty20 World Cup champions Pakistan have suffered a major blow, as fast bowler Umar Gul and all-rounder Yasir Arafat have been ruled out of the Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies due to injuries.

Gul, Pakistan’s leading wicket-taker in the previous two editions of the Twenty20 World Cup, hurt his shoulder during a training camp at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore earlier this month, while Arafat is struggling with a calf injury.

Both players failed to clear their final fitness tests conducted at the Gaddafi Stadium here.

“In mutual agreement with captain and coach, we have decided that we will not take a chance with half-fit players,” The Daily Times quoted Mohsin Hasan Khan, Pakistan selector, as saying.

“We have recommended the names of fast bowlers Mohammad Sami and uncapped Mohammad Irfan as replacements for the injured players. We have picked Sami from the list of five reserves we had kept for the World Cup,” he added.

Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi admitted that the absence of Gul is a major blow, but stressed that the team will manage with the players they have.

“Umar is our best bowler, but we have to cope with it and now Sami has to replace him and perform,” he said. (ANI)

Riewoldt to miss at least 12 weeks

St Kilda captain Nick Riewoldt has confirmed he is likely to be out of action for a minimum of 12 weeks with his hamstring tendon injury.

The Saints had been careful not to put a timeframe on the recovery period for their most important player, only expressing confidence he would return in the latter part of the season.

St Kilda and Riewoldt are more than hopeful he will be ready for the finals.

Riewoldt needed surgery on Monday to repair a hamstring tendon after he tore it just before half-time in last Friday night’s 28-point win over Collingwood at Docklands.

“Probably 12 (weeks) is something like the minimum for this sort of injury, but again they haven’t had too much experience with this particular type of injury,” Riewoldt told Channel Seven.

“It’s not a tendon off the bone, as some people were reporting, or a tendon off a muscle junction, it’s a pure tendon injury.”

His absence will mean a massive challenge for the Saints, but Riewoldt has faith they will be able to reorganise their attack and remain competitive.

The Saints narrowly lost an epic grand final to Geelong last year and have started this season with three straight wins.

Before his successful operation, there was plenty of speculation about how long Riewoldt would be sidelined, including fears that the injury might end his season.

Riewoldt admits he was nervous before receiving the good news that the surgery had gone well.

“It’s pretty nerve wracking, to be honest, when I did it originally,” he said.

“I haven’t had much experience with hamstring (injuries) … so I didn’t know what to expect.

“There were a lot of doomsdayers, I suppose, who were saying ‘off the bone’, and then some were saying regulation four to six (weeks).

“So I just threw my arms up in the air and really was willing to accept whatever happened, providing I could get back later in the year, which is the case.”

Harvey hoses down finals talk

Fremantle coach Mark Harvey admits the club is under an enormous amount of pressure following its perfect start to the 2010 AFL campaign.

The Dockers edged Geelong by seven points at Subiaco Oval on Sunday to make an unprecedented start to the season with three wins from three.

But Harvey refused to talk up his team’s chances of reaching the finals despite their unexpected start to the year, ahead of their round four clash with the Saints.

“I’ve been realistic with where we’re at,” he said.

“At the moment we’ve probably been meeting teams at the right times and we are taking advantage of that.

“We haven’t had a lot of injuries … but some of these other sides have had some significant problems in the first three rounds and that’s why it will balance itself off at some stage.

“That’s why you be realistic about where you’re at.

“I wouldn’t have thought there would be too many coaches or clubs talking about finals at this time of the year.”

Harvey said that the pressure surround the club may have led to himself and several players being bland during press conferences.

“I think we are under a fair bit of external pressure. Maybe if we release that maybe you will see the character come out,” Harvey said.

“There’s external pressure on and off the field, perhaps we just need to let go of that a little bit and just relax and let the characters evolve in the game and play the game.

“Don’t make a minor thing significant and that’s what is happening at the moment and that’s why you’re probably seeing a lot of players and coaches being like that.”

St Kilda will be without injured skipper Nick Riewoldt (hamstring) and suspended forward Justin Koschitzke for the match against Fremantle.

Harvey said their absence would make the Saints unpredictable and also dismissed suggestions the fallout from the Mick Malthouse-Stephen Milne spat could affect St Kilda.

“I would have thought maybe it’s a distraction for a day or two and then you move on,” he said.

Dockers defender Chris Tarrant (ankle) is a likely starter against the Saints but Nick Suban will miss 1-2 weeks with his own ankle complaint.

Harvey said Docklands held no fears for his side after posting two wins there already this year – a preseason win over North Melbourne and their round two victory over Essendon.

Meanwhile, Mark Harvey is ready to talk to the club’s hierarchy about a new deal but is not concerned about his future.

Harvey entered the AFL season under immense pressure to keep his job after leading the Dockers to just six wins in each of the previous two seasons.

The 44-year-old is out of contract at season’s end but an impressive start has seen his stocks rise significantly.

“I’ve never been pushing the issue,” Harvey said when asked about the contract situation on Wednesday.

“Whenever the decision comes to sit down and talk about things we’ll do it.

“But at the moment all I’m doing is coaching and making sure we are getting the best out of the players.”

One in 10 rental properties unfit to live in

The Victorian Council of Social Service (VCOSS) says it is disgusted with the findings of its investigation into the quality of affordable rental accommodation in Melbourne.

The organisation is urging the Government to legislate basic living standards for rental properties.

VCOSS volunteers visited 116 rental properties advertised in newspapers throughout Melbourne and Geelong on two weekends in March.

VCOSS chief executive Cath Smith says one in 10 of the properties surveyed was unfit to live in.

“The basic findings were that quite a lot of houses lacked two or more of some basic features such as locks on all doors, the absence of extensive mould, the absence of cooking, heating, electrical safety switches, those sorts of features,” she said.

Ms Smith is disgusted with the findings.

“We’re not a third-world country,” she said.

“We’ve got a residential tenancies act that does not actually define what kind of habitability standards are expected,” she said.

The state’s telephone and web financial counselling service, MoneyHelp says minimum standards are urgently needed to ensure all rental properties are healthy, safe and affordable.

Carolyn Bond says a third of their callers last month were renters and two thirds of them were in housing stress.

“While these renters are often struggling to pay for their housing, they are not necessarily getting a good deal for that money,” she said.

No Rooney for Bayern decider

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has been ruled out of the Champions League second leg quarter-final against Bayern Munich by manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Ferguson said overnight that he was “not prepared” to risk Rooney’s ankle injury against Bayern, which won the first leg 2-1 in Munich last week.

Rooney opened the scoring for United last week but suffered ankle ligament damage after landing awkwardly on his ankle in the final minute of play.

He was expected to be out of action for two to three weeks.

However recent reports claimed the England international had responded well to treatment, giving fans hope that he could make a shock return to the United bench for the decider against Bayern.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has said he would not risk using Rooney if he was not 100 per cent fit, and reports late Sunday said the club’s medical staff had given the striker only a 40 per cent chance of playing.

In Rooney’s absence United suffered a 2-1 defeat to Premier League title rivals Chelsea at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Tendulkar’s absence from Twenty20 World Cup great relief for teams: Afridi

Islamabad, Mar. 29 (ANI): Pakistani captain Shahid Afridi has said that master blaster Sachin Tendulkar’s absence from the next month’s Twenty20 World Cup will prove to be a big relief for other teams.

Tendulkar, who quit T20 international cricket along with Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid in 2007, is in a great form at the IPL-3 but he has ruled out the possibility of returning to the format.

“The way he has blossomed in the last few years, he is only getting better and better as a batsman. If he is not playing for India in the Twenty20 World Cup, it is certainly a big advantage for other teams,” the Daily Times quoted Afridi, as saying.

“If Tendulkar had played in this World Cup, I am sure he would have made a big impact for India,” he added.

Afridi feels that Tendulkar’s batting style is getting better day-by-day.

“With every match he seems to be growing as a batsman and getting better. He is playing like a teenager. There is no sign of age affecting his game at all,” he said.

“The biggest thing that he still enjoys playing the sport and his hunger for runs has not died at all,” he added. (ANI)

Strauss says skipping Bangladesh tour’s benefits will be seen during Ashes series

London, Mar 27(ANI): England skipper Andrew Strauss has said that he was right to take a break from captaincy of the national team and rest himself for the tour to Bangladesh, but insisted that he will never do it again.

Strauss was accused of “disrespecting Test cricket” by Australian legend Shane Warne for resting instead of touring Bangladesh.

“I can understand the criticism – their argument the captain should be there all the time is a valid one. But I think we must look at ways of making sure our players are performing at their best when we need them most,” The Sun quoted Strauss, as saying.

“The benefit of taking some time off now will only be seen in the summer and into next winter. We have some very important cricket coming up. Come The Ashes, we”re going to need as much energy and enthusiasm as we can muster. I still think missing Bangladesh was the right decision,” he added.

Strauss, who will return to lead the side against Bangladesh in May and Pakistan in July, said that it was not a unilateral decision.

“Myself, head coach Andy Flower and England managing director Hugh Morris spoke about it for a number of months. This break was an opportunity we saw in the schedule. I don’t think I’ll need another one,” he added.

In his absence, Alastair Cook led England to whitewash victories in both the one-day and Test series and Strauss said: “It was fantastic to see some guys in Bangladesh who hadn”t been involved in the Test team have a go.”

“Cookie did things his way and did an excellent job, but I think the lads understand the principles we”re putting in place,” he added. (ANI)

Panax achieves drilling goal

Panax Geothermal has finished drilling and securing its Salamander 1 well at Penola in south-eastern South Australia.

The company has achieved its goal to reach the 4,000 metre mark by mid-March.

Panax Geothermal reached a depth of 4,025 metres in 44 days, setting a record for the Australian geothermal sector in the process.

The absence of oil and gas has been declared a positive and the company is now preparing to perform a flow test on the well, which is yet to reach its normal temperature after the cooling effect of the drilling process.

Panax aims to set up a 5.9 megawatt demonstration plant at the site by the end of next year before expanding to commercial production scale.

Community service for drunk golf cart driver

A man has been sentenced for high-range drink driving in a golf cart in southern New South Wales.

Clinton Reynolds, 28, had been at Christmas drinks at a golf club last December and in the absence of taxis, his friends thought it would be funny if they drove home in a golf cart.

Today Wagga Wagga Local Court heard Reynolds had been driving the cart for two hours and was dropping a friend off when police caught him south of Junee.

The court heard it would have been a quicker journey if the four alcohol-affected friends had got out and walked.

Magistrate Tony Murray said Reynolds put his friends at considerable risk but gets some benefit from his honesty with police.

He must do 50 hours of community service and cannot drive until next February.

New Delhi, Mar 19 (ANI): Delhi Daredevils will take on Chennai Super Kings at the Feroze Shah Kotla here on Friday in the third edition of the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament.

Both sides will take the field without their respective captains.

Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been ruled out of IPL for 10 days due to an elbow injury. He was hurt by a Shane Bond delivery during their match against the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Delhi Daredevils captain Gautam Gambhir too is nursing a hamstring injury that makes him a doubtful starter for today”s match.

Suresh Raina will lead the side in Dhoni”s absence and Dinesh Karthik will lead the Delhi Daredevils. (ANI)
