High housing price impacting Chinese middle-class people’s health

New Delhi, Apr 22 (ANI): China’s high housing price is impacting middle-class fortunes and causing them health problems, according to a survey done by two Chinese universities.

The survey, jointly conducted by the Beijing-based Xiaokang Magazine and Tsinghua University, said Chinese middle-class people are under great pressure and do not feel good about their health: 88.9 percent said they were or will be over fatigued, and 53.3 percent said they were not satisfied with their physical and mental conditions.

Respondents of the survey were civil servants and white-collar workers in the city. They are mainly post 80s, 70s and 60s, with more than 80 percent of them having a monthly income of more than 3,000 yuan (440 dollars), the China Daily reports.

“If the soaring housing price cannot be curbed effectively, China’s middle class may collapse,” said Tang Jun, a sociologist with the China Academy of Social Sciences.

About 80 percent of civil servants and white-collar workers said they were under great pressure, and more than 60 percent said their pressure was mainly about buying a house and paying mortgage loans, the survey said.

More than 60 percent of the respondents said they were sacrificing their health for money, with 16.1 percent saying they can accept this deal and 45.4 percent saying they don’t want to accept this deal but have no choice, according to the survey.(ANI)

Swansea seniors in cyberspace

Tasmania’s first internet cafe for seniors has opened in Swansea on the east coast.

The May Shaw Health Centre has opened the internet cafe with funding from the Rudd Government’s Broadband for Seniors initiative and donations from the local community.

The centre’s business manager Mike Hannon says getting older people online helps them remain active and productive.

“It gives older people a bridge back to the younger generation because they then have a common interest in the technology that enables them to communicate.”

“We consider it vitally important that we can offer our residents, who generally are well into their 80s, something that takes away the disadvantage of being old and gives them the advantages of [being] anyone and anything they want to be on the internet,” he said.

Fans frequently mistake Cusack for Spacey and Broderick!

London, March 30(ANI): Actor John Cusack has admitted that people often mistake him for Kevin Spacey and Matthew Broderick.

The Being John Malkovich star said that a lot of people couldn’t tell correctly the films he has acted in.

“Sometimes people say, ”I loved you in American Beauty”, or ”I loved you in Ferris Bueller”s Day Off”. I go, ”No, no, no!”” the Daily Express quoted Cusack as telling Us Weekly magazine.

Meanwhile, he recently said that he”d love to go back to the 80s and watch artists such as the Rolling Stones, David Bowie and the Sex Pistols perform. (ANI)

Trio bash senior on scooter

Police are searching for three men who attacked an elderly man on a motorised scooter in Gippsland last week.

Police say the men in their late teens and early 20s punched the man in the head after he refused to hand over money at Lakes Entrance on Friday morning.

Leading Senior Constable Ross Martin says two men driving past in a four-wheel drive stopped to help the man, who is in his 80s.

He says it was a disgusting assault.

“It’s just disgusting … Lakes is a great town, it’s a bit of a blight on the town and in fact the old bloke required an oxygen bottle, he carries the oxygen bottle on his seat under the scooter, he’s just a soft target and we’re very disappointed,” he said.

John Cusack says he’d love to travel back to 80s

London, March 29 (ANI): John Cusack has said that he”d love to go back to the 80s

However, the 43-year-old also said that he”d like to travel back in time like his Hot Tub Time Machine character primarily for the music.

The actor stars with Chevy Chase in the comedy, which sees a group of friends go back in time using a hot tub.

“It would be pretty fun if you could go back to when your favourite bands were first playing. Like if you were a drummer, you could go back to Liverpool right when the Beatles fired Pete Best and they”re looking for a drummer and replace Ringo Starr. There could be a couple of historic opportunities there,” the Mirror quoted him as saying.

“Or you could go see the Rolling Stones” first American tour or something, or see David Bowie or see the Sex Pistols when they first came to America. You could do an awesome rock ”n” roll tour and see bands” first explosions,” he added.

However, Cusack admitted that not everything about the 80s was great.

“I think the fashion would have to fall under the terrifying things of the 80s. The legwarmers, the scrunchies, the mullets, the primary colours. The list goes on and on. And I have a wide variety of fashion horror shows myself that”s available on cable, seemingly all the time,” he said. (ANI)

”Despicable” woman preys on elderly men, cons them out of cash

Melbourne, Mar 27 (ANI): An Australian woman, who has been dubbed as ”despicable”, is said to be preying upon elderly men by making sexual advances towards them before relieving them of their cash.

The woman, who calls herself “Catted” and is aged in her late 30s to early 40s, has stolen hundreds of dollars from men aged in their 70s and 80s.

Police said that on each occasion she made “sexual advances” towards the men before stealing from them, and in each case, the men had recently visited a bank or ATM and withdrawn a significant amount of money.

Detective Inspector Chris Goddard said he was disgusted by the predatory nature of the crime.

“It”s quite despicable and reprehensible that people are preying on elderly members of the community,” the Daily Telegraph quoted him as saying.

So far police know of three victims but believe there may be more and want them to come forward.

“We now have three incidents we are investigating but suspect that there may be several other victims,” Insp Goddard said.

The first incident occurred on March 3 when the woman approached an 80-year-old man outside a supermarket in Oatley.

Then on March 18, the woman followed a 71-year-old man after he got off a bus at Strathfield, then she tried to grope him before taking his wallet.

Only five hours later on the same day, she befriended an 86-year-old man at a hotel in Auburn. She followed him home and made a sexual advance before stealing a large amount of cash.

Insp Goddard said police were reviewing break and enters of elderly people”s homes over the past few months to see whether the same woman was involved.

Police are also investigating whether a second woman, a 26-year-old from Strathfield arrested earlier this week over the robbery of elderly men, is connected.

Catted smokes, is of Aboriginal appearance with medium-length black hair. (ANI)

Groper stalks, robs grandpas

Police are looking for a woman who they say is groping elderly men before robbing them in Sydney’s west.

More than 40 men aged in their 70s or 80s have been attacked around Auburn in the past few weeks.

Officers have already arrested a 26-year-old woman over the attacks.

She has been charged with four offences and remains in custody.

But they are looking for another older woman who they believe is behind the other offences.

She is described as being in her late 30s or early 40s, and they have CCTV footage of her.

Introducing herself as Katie, the woman approaches and befriends her victims at shopping centres, bus stops or in pubs. She gropes them before taking their wallets.

In one case, the offender chatted to an 86-year-old at an Auburn pub. She followed him home and made a sexual advance before walking into his house and taking a large amount of cash.

Hey Dad! star to take allegations to police

Hey Dad! actress Sarah Monahan has flown from the United States to Australia to make an official complaint over her alleged sexual abuse while on the hit TV show.

Monahan has made claims in magazines and on television that Hey Dad! actor Robert Hughes abused her while she played his on-screen daughter in the 80s and 90s.

Hughes has vehemently denied the allegation and his legal team has been in contact with NSW Police.

On Thursday night, Monahan told Channel Nine she had flown from the US especially to make an official complaint.

“As soon as people said ‘you need to go to the police’ I was at the airport within three hours and caught the first flight out,” she said.

“We’re headed straight to the police.”

NSW Police say they “stand ready” to launch a formal investigation.

Detective Superintendent John Kerlatec, commander of the Sex Crimes Unit, confirmed police have started collating information.

“A number of police have been assigned and are ready to take up any follow up investigations or inquiries that need to be done,” he said.

He added: “Police need to see detailed allegations by any victims to determine what crime or crimes have been committed.”

Detective Superintendent Kerlatec says while police are not yet conducting a formal investigation, they are looking into it.

“Because of the exposure of this matter, people have made contact that either know of somebody who may be a witness, know of someone who may have additional information,” he said.

“It would be dangerous not to collate that information at this time.

“At some point in the future, if and when an investigation increases, it may be a lost opportunity to find that information then.”

Hey Dad! was one of the most popular shows on TV in the late 1980s and early 90s.

The sitcom focussed on the whacky adventures of Martin Kelly – an architect, single-handedly raising three children after the death of his wife.

But it is now likely to be better remembered for the allegation by Monahan to Women’s Day magazine and to Channel Nine’s A Current Affair that she was fondled during her time with the show.

Monahan, who now lives in the US, played young schoolgirl Jenny Kelly on the program for six years.

Initially, she would not name the man she claims assaulted her.

But on Wednesday night, A Current Affair pointed the finger at Hughes, who played the father of Monahan’s character.

From Singapore, where he now works, Hughes told the show he strenuously denied the allegation.

“I’m absolutely, totally shocked at the allegations and I deny, absolutely deny everything,” he said.

“I’m absolutely puzzled as to why this is being said now.”

London, September 8 (ANI): A single released by Japan’s future prime minister, Yukio Hatoyama, two decades ago has sparked a bidding war amongst fans at an auction site.

‘Mind is sharp as a steel trap’ even in old age: Study

Washington, Aug 22 (ANI): Many studies have suggested that cognitive function declines in old age, but a new study led by a Ryerson University researcher shows that this is not always the case.

In the study, Dr. Lixia Yang of Ryerson University and her co-author, Ralf Krampe of the Max Planck Institute for Human Development, Germany, found that seniors were able to retain 50 per cent of concepts they learned almost a year ago.

“This finding was astonishing. We always assumed that seniors would have great difficulty in grasping new concepts and maintaining what they’ve learned. But our research demonstrates this is not always the case,” Yang said.

47 seniors in their 70s and 80s completed a series of tests that measured three areas that normally decline with age: reasoning, processing speed and visual attention.

They then repeated the same tests eight months later in a follow-up study. For example, to test the older adults’ visual attention, one test involved finding ‘target’ letters, like the letter ‘D’ with dots above and below, among other letters with similar patterns as fast as possible.

“This study suggests that seniors’ minds are still sharp, and they can be productive members of the workplace, as long as they receive appropriate training,” Yang said.

The study has been published in this month’s issue of the Journal of Gerontology: Psychological Sciences. (ANI)

Goldstone further revealed that Jackson, who became hooked on sedatives, also resorted reading children’s books to relax. (ANI)

Women in Iran’s ancient Burnt City outlived men

Tehran, June 22 (ANI): Archeological studies have found that the female inhabitants of Iran’s ancient site of Burnt City outlived the male members of their community.

Men died between the ages of 35 to 45, while women lived well into their 80s, Farzad Forouzanfar, head of the Burnt City archeology team, told Press TV.

Forouzanfar said that the area witnessed considerable population drops and that the number of the female inhabitants of the area was more than the males.

Located near the city of Zabol in Sistan-Baluchestan Province, Burnt City spans more than 300,000 hectares and dates back to 5,200 years ago.
