Two held with idols worth Rs.20 crore

Lucknow, May 27 (IANS) Two men have been arrested from an Uttar Pradesh town with two ‘ashtdhatu’ (eight-medal) antique idols worth Rs.20 crore in the international market, police said Thursday.

Shahabuddin and Ashok Prasad opened fire as they were nabbed Wednesday evening in Taryasujan, 350 km from here.

‘Acting on a tip-off, we intercepted the two. They opened fire at us. After a one-hour gunfight, we managed to arrest them,’ police inspector Nitish Srivastava told reporters.

‘We are yet to ascertain the place from where the two men brought the idols as they gave contradictory statements. They are being interrogated.’

The two have confessed that they have been operating for the last five years in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh.

While Shahabuddin is from Uttar Pradesh, Prasad hails from Bihar. Both are in their early 40s.

Malaysian lorry driver claims masseuse “nearly molested” him

Kuala Lumpur, May 11 (ANI): A Malaysian lorry driver has laid claim that he was “nearly molested” by a masseuse in Bedong, Kedah.

According to the Harian Metro, the man, who is in his 40s and known as Mail, said his friend had introduced him to the services of the single mother who conducted her business from home.

He revealed that the woman, who is in her 50s, would conduct her massages in a room while her children were in the living room.

“I was told to come for massages three days in a row with each session costing RM30,” the Star Online quoted him as saying.

He suspected something was amiss when on the second day the woman started massaging his private parts.

“She suddenly lifted my sarong and climbed on top of me. What is more shocking is that she wasn’t wearing any underwear,” he revealed.

Shocked by the woman’s actions Mail immediately shoved her away, causing her to fall. He put on his clothes and ran out of the house.

“I am angry at the woman’s action as she had tried to take advantage of her customers. She should have just provided massage services, not sex,” he said.

Mail did not return for his third day appointment.

“A friend told me that the woman only gave massages to men and she had been doing this for years. She is also reputedly very popular with men,” he added. (ANI)

Kylie Minogue rolls back the years in new video

London, May 10 (ANI): Kylie Minogue has turned back the clock by looking as beautiful as when she first became famous in the new promo for her latest single ‘All My Lovers’.

The bootylicious singer looked as stunning as ever in a trendy white cobweb-style T-shirt, knee-high boots and black undies.

“Kylie may be in her 40s but she looked absolutely stunning – as beautiful as when she first became famous,” the Daily Star quoted an onlooker as saying.

“And that bum of hers, is enough to make any woman jealous – and any man go weak at the knees,” she added.

Kylie got director Joseph Khan to make the sexy video after he worked on 28-year-old Britney Spears’s ‘Toxic’ promo, as well as ‘Lovegame’ by Lady GaGa, 24.

The Aussie singer, who has been dating Spanish model Andres Segura, 32, since 2008, is set to release new album ‘Aphrodite’ in July. (ANI)

Police hunt Times Square bomb suspect

New York police are trawling through hundreds of hours of video tape from surveillance cameras in the hunt for those responsible for the attempted bombing in Times Square.

Police say they have numerous leads already but none of them point to the work of international terrorists, despite a claim of responsibility from the Pakistani Taliban.

Propane tanks, fireworks, petrol and a clock device were all removed from the vehicle parked in Times Square, and police say the “amateurish” bomb could have created a “significant fireball” if it had detonated.

Theatre-goers were heading to dinner while thousands of other tourists filled Times Square when street vendors near 45th Street spotted the car.

Rallis Gialaboukis was selling hot dogs about seven metres away.

“[The car was] abandoned, hazard [lights] on and people started talking amongst us,” he said.

“[We could] see the smoke coming out of the car, like seeping through the windows, and you could see it.

“You couldn’t see what’s in the car, nobody could see and then as they were trying to evacuate … away from it it just went off inside the car – an explosion went off inside the car.”

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said the bomb was probably beginning to detonate but malfunctioned.

“It looks like it would have caused a significant fireball and you have large numbers of pedestrians in that area so yep, we were lucky that it didn’t detonate,” he said.

The police have 82 of their own surveillance cameras to check, plus hundreds of hours of material from privately owned security cameras in the area.

Already they are looking for a white man in his 40s who was acting suspiciously.

“He also was seen shedding a dark-coloured shirt, revealing a red one underneath. He put the darker one into a bag that he was carrying,” Commissioner Kelly said.

“This happened about a half block from where the vehicle was parked.”

Detectives are also en route to a town in Pennsylvania where a tourist believes he may have captured the suspect’s image on his video camera.

Taliban claim

The Pakistani Taliban have claimed credit in a video message but Commissioner Kelly says nothing indicates they are to blame.

Homeland security secretary Janet Napolitano said authorities were treating the incident “as if it could be a potential terrorist attack”.

“The derivation of that, we do not know. And that’s what the investigation will tell us,” she said.

New York congressman Peter King says the possible connection to international terrorist groups cannot be ruled out.

“Just because it’s not done by a bombing expert doesn’t mean that we can rule out an international connection or even just having a cell or operatives in this country working together,” he said.

Twenty-four hours after the attempted bombing, Times Square was again filled with people.

But New York’s mayor Michael Bloomberg says the attempted bombing is another reminder of what the city faces every day.

“Tonight is a further reminder of the dangers that we face,” he said.

President Barack Obama, who is surveying a massive oil slick in Louisiana, says he is monitoring the situation in New York and will ensure justice is done.

Tourists flock to Kufri to beat the heat

Shimla, May 3 (ANI): As the mercury rises across northern India, Kufri in Shimla is attracting lots of tourists.

The climate of Kufri is providing much-needed relief to many tourists who leave behind temperatures in mid to high 40s.

“I am from Ahmedabad, the temperature is 47 degree Celsius and here the temperature is very low and here we are enjoying the low temperature and the beauty of hills. The weather is very nice here,” said Prateek, a tourist.

Locals involved in the tourism business say that this tourist rush indicates a good season for them this summer.

“As the summer is going up, tourists are rushing to Kufri. We are having a good business these days. As the mercury will rise in May and June, this rush will increase more. This is good for the hundreds of local youth involved in horse-riding business here,” said Shiv Singh, who arranges horse-riding trips for tourists.

From Shimla and Kufri, tourists also move to other tourist destinations in Himachal Pradesh, like Manali and Dalhousie.

The maximum temperature in most hill-stations of Himachal Pradesh varies from 24 to 27 degree Celsius. (ANI)

Therapy benefits even when it comes to very distressed married couples

Washington, April 20 (ANI): Therapy can help even very distressed married couples if both partners want to improve their marriage, says a new study.

The study, conducted by Andrew Christensen, a UCLA professor of psychology and lead author of the study, included 134 married couples, 71 in Los Angeles and 63 in Seattle. Most were in their 30s and 40s, and slightly more than half had children.

The couples were ”chronically, seriously distressed” and fought frequently, but they were hoping to improve their marriages.

“We didn”t want couples who would get better on their own. We wanted couples who were consistently unhappy. We excluded almost 100 couples who wanted couple therapy but who did not meet our criteria of consistent and serious distress,” Christensen said.

The couples received up to 26 therapy sessions within a year. Psychologists conducted follow-up sessions approximately every six months for five years after therapy ended.

The couples all participated in one of two kinds of therapy. The first, traditional behavioural couple therapy, focuses on making positive changes, including learning better ways of communicating, especially about problems, and better ways of working toward solutions.

The second, integrative behavioural couple therapy, uses similar strategies but focuses more on the emotional reactions and not just the actions that led to the emotional reactions. In this approach, couples work at understanding their spouse”s emotional sensitivities.

Christensen uses the integrative therapy, the second approach, which he described in his 2000 book ”Reconcilable Differences”. The couples who used this approach read the book as part of their treatment, while the couples in the traditional therapy group read a different self-help book.

When the therapy sessions were over, about two-thirds of the couples overall had shown significant clinical improvement.

“Given this population, that”s a good figure. If couples do not improve in 26 sessions, that is a bad sign. This is not psychoanalysis,” said Christensen.

The integrative therapy approach was significantly more effective than traditional therapy over the first two years of follow-up. The difference between the treatments, however, was not dramatic and did not last as the years went on.

Five years after treatment ended, about half the couples were significantly improved from where they were at the start of treatment, about a quarter were separated or divorced, and about a quarter were unchanged.

At that five-year mark, about a third of the couples were “normal, happy couples,” said Christensen.

For another 16 percent, their marriage was significantly improved and was tolerable, if not very happy.

“They”re clearly better and their marriages might last. We know from many studies that couple therapy can be beneficial to couples, although it certainly does not help all couples. We also know distressed couples tend not to get better on their own,” Christensen said.

For therapy to work, both partners have to be strongly committed to saving the marriage, and both need to be willing to do their share to work at the relationship and not just blame the other, Christensen said.

The study appears in the April issue of the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, a publication of the American Psychological Association.

Clintons say they are too old to be in the US Supreme Court

New York Apr. 19 (ANI): Former US President Bill Clinton has said that President Obama should consider someone younger to fill the recently vacated Supreme Court post, adding that both he and his wife, Hillary Clinton, are too old to merit consideration.

“I”d like to see him put someone in there, late 40s, early 50s, on the court, and someone with a lot of energy for the job,” the 63-year-old Clinton told ABC”s “This Week” when asked about President Obama”s upcoming replacement of Justice John Paul Stevens.

Since Stevens, 90, announced his retirement, both Clintons have been mentioned as possible nominees to the high court.

The New York Daily News quoted Clinton, as saying that no matter whom Obama nominates, he should expect a fight from Senate Republicans.

But he said he and his wife would counsel the president against picking either of them.

“She would be good at it,” Clinton said of his wife, 62, adding that at “one point in her life, she might [have] been interested.”

“But she”s like me, you know, we”re kind of doers,”

Clinton said. “I think if she were asked, she would advise the President to appoint some 10, 15 years younger.”

As for himself, he said: “I”m already 63-years-old.”

Clinton neglected to mention that his law license was suspended for five years after he left office as part of a settlement over the Monica Lewinsky affair. (ANI)

Cyclist killed in Anzac Highway crash

A cyclist has been killed in a collision with a truck at the corner of Anzac Highway and Cross Road at Plympton Park in Adelaide.

The crash happened just after 7:00am and police say the man in his 40s died at the scene.

City-bound traffic on Anzac Highway was reduced to two lanes for several hours.

There has also been a death in a crash on the Dukes Highway in the south-east of South Australia.

A man died when his car hit a tree about four kilometres west of Keith, just before 8:00am.

There have been 45 road deaths in South Australia for the year compared with 37 at the same time last year.

Rough ride: trio rescued from roller-coaster

Two teenagers and a woman in her 40s have been given the all clear by ambulance officers after being trapped on a roller-coaster at Sydney’s Royal Easter Show.

The trio were stuck in a horizontal position in their seats, five metres above the ground, for about 90 minutes when the roller-coaster stopped unexpectedly about 4.00pm.

Fire Brigade Superintendent Ian Krimmer says emergency service workers used a ladder truck to bring the passengers down safely.

“It would have been a stressful time for the three people. They were stuck for over an hour,” he said.

“It’s been a combined effort to bring them down by the three services: police, fire and ambulance.

“They’re currently being assessed by ambulance crews on the ground and the cause of the incident will be investigated shortly.”

A WorkCover inspector will examine the roller-coaster tonight and determine if it is safe to continue operating.

Acupuncture can help calm highly anxious dental patients

Washington, Mar 30 (ANI): A visit to the dentist provokes extreme fear and anxiety in many people. Now, a new study has suggested that acupuncture can prove helpful in the management of the uneasiness related to dental treatment.

The small study has been published in Acupuncture in Medicine.

The fear and anxiety ahead of the dental visit is a condition termed odontophobia. And up to a third of patients report moderate anxiety at the prospect of dental treatment, studies show.

The authors base their findings on 16 women and four men from eight dental practice lists.

Each of the patients was moderately or extremely anxious about going to the dentist for treatment, as assessed by a validated questionnaire – the Back Anxiety Inventory (BAI).

All were in their 40s and had been trying to deal with this problem for between two and 30 years.

The BAI score was assessed before and after five minutes of acupuncture treatment, targeting two specific acupuncture points (GV20 and EX6) on the top of the head.

The acupuncture was carried out by the dentists themselves, all of whom are members of the British Dental Acupuncture Society.

The average BAI score of 26.5 fell to 11.5, and all 20 patients were able to undergo their planned treatment, whereas before this had only been possible in six – and then only partially and after a great deal of effort on the part of both dentist and patient.

The authors point out that several attempts have been made to conquer this type of anxiety, including sedatives, relaxation techniques, behavioural therapies, biofeedback and hypnosis. The research indicates that these do help, but they are time consuming and require considerable levels of psychotherapeutic skills, if applied properly, say the authors.

They caution that further larger studies are needed to confirm the value of acupuncture in these sorts of cases. (ANI)

”Despicable” woman preys on elderly men, cons them out of cash

Melbourne, Mar 27 (ANI): An Australian woman, who has been dubbed as ”despicable”, is said to be preying upon elderly men by making sexual advances towards them before relieving them of their cash.

The woman, who calls herself “Catted” and is aged in her late 30s to early 40s, has stolen hundreds of dollars from men aged in their 70s and 80s.

Police said that on each occasion she made “sexual advances” towards the men before stealing from them, and in each case, the men had recently visited a bank or ATM and withdrawn a significant amount of money.

Detective Inspector Chris Goddard said he was disgusted by the predatory nature of the crime.

“It”s quite despicable and reprehensible that people are preying on elderly members of the community,” the Daily Telegraph quoted him as saying.

So far police know of three victims but believe there may be more and want them to come forward.

“We now have three incidents we are investigating but suspect that there may be several other victims,” Insp Goddard said.

The first incident occurred on March 3 when the woman approached an 80-year-old man outside a supermarket in Oatley.

Then on March 18, the woman followed a 71-year-old man after he got off a bus at Strathfield, then she tried to grope him before taking his wallet.

Only five hours later on the same day, she befriended an 86-year-old man at a hotel in Auburn. She followed him home and made a sexual advance before stealing a large amount of cash.

Insp Goddard said police were reviewing break and enters of elderly people”s homes over the past few months to see whether the same woman was involved.

Police are also investigating whether a second woman, a 26-year-old from Strathfield arrested earlier this week over the robbery of elderly men, is connected.

Catted smokes, is of Aboriginal appearance with medium-length black hair. (ANI)

Groper stalks, robs grandpas

Police are looking for a woman who they say is groping elderly men before robbing them in Sydney’s west.

More than 40 men aged in their 70s or 80s have been attacked around Auburn in the past few weeks.

Officers have already arrested a 26-year-old woman over the attacks.

She has been charged with four offences and remains in custody.

But they are looking for another older woman who they believe is behind the other offences.

She is described as being in her late 30s or early 40s, and they have CCTV footage of her.

Introducing herself as Katie, the woman approaches and befriends her victims at shopping centres, bus stops or in pubs. She gropes them before taking their wallets.

In one case, the offender chatted to an 86-year-old at an Auburn pub. She followed him home and made a sexual advance before walking into his house and taking a large amount of cash.

Australians in PNG face more charges

Five Australian men facing drugs charges in Papua New Guinea could also be charged with several customs offences.

The tourists have been charged with possessing a dangerous drug after police in Bougainville allegedly found 470 grams of marijuana on board their 54-foot yacht, the Perenti.

The men were released on bail after appearing in court in Buka yesterday and will reappear on Thursday.

The PNG Customs Service is also investigating the men’s arrival into PNG waters from the Solomon Islands.

A customs spokesman said they could also be charged with failing to obtain customs clearance and four other offences related to the marijuana.

Their current charge of possessing a dangerous drug could see them face up to 18 months in jail.

PNG police have not released the names of the men, who are aged in their 30s and 40s.

Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs says one of the men is from Queensland and the rest are from New South Wales.

They have been ordered to stay in Buka until their next court appearance.

Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs says one of them is a 46-year-old Queensland man but no other details have been provided.

All of the men have been charged with one count of possessing a dangerous drug and face up to 18 months in jail.

They were released on bail after appearing in court in the provincial capital Buka on Monday afternoon.

They have been ordered to stay in Buka until their next court appearance on Thursday.

America’s Jihad Jane pleads not guilty

London, Mar. 20 (ANI): An Pennsylvania woman dubbed as America’s “Jihad Jane” has pleaded not guilty for plotting to murder in a foreign country.

Colleen LaRose, 46, who was accused of plotting a conspiracy to murder a Swedish cartoonist, appeared before a federal court wearing a green jumpsuit and with corn rows in her blonde hair, The Telegraph reports.

A May 3 trial date has been set.

Authorities claim that LaRose wanted to kill the Swedish artist who had offended Muslims, and grew acquainted online with violent co-conspirators from around the world.

In a YouTube video, LaRose said she was “desperate to do something” to ease the suffering of Muslims.

LaRose spent most of her life in Texas, where she dropped out of high school, married at 16 and again at 24, and racked up a few minor arrests.

After her second divorce, LaRose followed a boyfriend to Pennsylvania and began caring for his father while he worked long hours.

As she moved through her 40s without a job or any outside hobbies, her boyfriend said she started spending more time online.

However, her boyfriend Kurt Gorman does not consider her religious.

In August she stole her boyfriend”s passport and fled to Europe without telling him, making good on her online pledge to try to kill in the name of Allah, according to the indictment.

From June 2008 until her August 2009 departure for Europe, the woman who also called herself “Fatima Rose” went online to recruit male fighters for the cause, the indictment charged.

She had also agreed to marry one of her overseas contacts, a man from South Asia who said he could deal bombs and explosives, it added. (ANI)

Ponting blasts Aussies, asks them to lift performance against Kiwis

Auckland, Mar.5 (ANI): Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting has urged his one-day international squad to train harder and lift their performance against New Zealand in the second of five Chappell-Hadlee matches to be played at Auckland”s Eden Park.

Following their two-wicket loss in Napier on Wednesday, Ponting”s men are reportedly desperate to show some improvement in Saturday”s game.

“A lot of our batsmen need to look at themselves long and hard to make sure they do better next time,” said Ponting, who was critical of batsmen getting out in the 30s and 40s and not getting big scores.

Mike Hussey, with 59, was the only player to score a half-century in Australia”s 8-275 before New Zealand made 8-281 including man-of-the-match Ross Taylor”s 70.

“Every game that we play has to be like it is your last. I didn”t think we were necessarily playing with that sort of attitude, especially with our bowling and our fielding,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Ponting, as saying after Wednesday”s game.

“We”ve got a little bit of work to do before the next game,” he said. (ANI)

Out of form Bopara wants to be England’s main man

London, Sep 11 (ANI): Ravi Bopara, who has been struggling with his batting form, remains convinced that he will become an international star despite a desperate struggle against Australia.

He has already been dropped from England’s Test team and is now in danger of relinquishing his place in the one-day team.

The Essex batsman was speaking up for England’s under pressure one-day side after three miserable performances in the past week that have handed Australia a 3-0 lead in the NatWest Series.

According to The Sun, Bopara knows he has no alternative other than to fight and discover some form from somewhere, or to lose the series by a humiliating margin, perhaps even a dreaded 7-0 whitewash.

“I don’t doubt my ability. It is just a case of getting my game in order. There is a lot to come from me yet. A big score can turn it round. I’ve made a few 40s and 50s but I want to go out and win games for England,” Bopara said.

“I don’t want to get scores that just do enough to give England a chance, I want to seal the win. I’m desperate to do that but not over-desperate because that’s when things can go wrong.

“I want to be the main man for England. I would love to go out at Lord’s on Saturday and smack the Aussies around. I still think we can pull this series out of the fire – England normally respond well when we are down,” he added.

Since scoring three tons in three Test innings against West Indies earlier this year, Bopara has been struggling with the bat. (ANI)

Batman voted Britain’s Favourite Super Hero Ever

London, Sept 3 (ANI): Caped crusader Batman has been voted Britain’s favourite super hero in a new poll.

The ‘Dark Knight’ pushed webslinger ‘Spider-Man’ at the second place followed by the ‘Superman’ at third.

Batman, the alter-ego of billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne, has been immortalised in the 1960s TV series as well as a big budget movie franchise.

A video game called Batman: Arkham Asylum was also released last week.

“No matter how often he’s reinvented – a noir detective in the 40s, a camp icon in the 60s, a gothic Knight in the 80s – he’s always the coolest, most iconic and recognisable superhero there is,” the Telegraph quoted Dave Golder, editor of SFX.co.uk, the website which conducted the survey, as saying.

‘Wolverine’ and ‘Iron Man’ wrapped up the top five.

Britain’s top 10 favourite super heroes are:

1. Batman

2. Spider-Man

3. Superman

4. Wolverine

5. Iron Man

6. Green Lantern

7. Captain Britain

8. Deadpool

Bras are men’s latest stress busters!

London, Jul 11 (ANI): Unwinding after a stressful day at work now comes easy for men with the introduction of the latest anxiety-busting accessory – a bra made specifically for them.

The garment, which comes at 20 pounds, is made of soothing silky material, and it is said to make the wearer feel “calm and revived”.

Makers of the bra have produced 5,000 in a choice of white, pink or black, but they fit only the smallest of manboobs as they come in just one size, a tiny A cup.

Wishroom, a mail order undies firm, started selling the Bra-O in Japan last year, and most of its customers are “salaried men” and office workers in their 30s and 40s.

“They’re not interested in cross-dressing, they just find wearing a bra relaxes them,” the Sun quoted Wishroom boss Masayuki Tsuchiya as saying. (ANI)
