UPDATE 1-’Date Night’ ekes out disputed box office win

LOS ANGELES, April 11 (Reuters) – Television comics Steve Carell and Tina Fey scored a disputed win at the North American box office on Sunday, as “Date Night” narrowly beat last weekend’s champion “Clash of the Titans.”

The duo’s romantic comedy earned $27.1 million during its first weekend, said its distributor 20th Century Fox, coming in at the high end of pundits’ forecasts.

“Clash of the Titans” grossed $26.9 million, said Warner Bros. But the studio said it estimated a $26 million weekend for “Date Night.” Two rival studios also gave the edge to “Clash,” while another said the race was too close to call.

“It does seem a little bizarre that they squeezed it out,” Warner Bros. domestic distribution president Dan Fellman said of Fox’s estimate. Fox declined to respond.

A clear winner will emerge on Monday when the studios release final data for the Friday-to-Sunday weekend.

Box office estimates are based on executives poring through the history books to research the trajectories of similarly themed films at the same time of year. The Sunday component is particularly open to revision since the studios release their three-day estimates early in the day.

Either way, the sales for both films were at the high end of industry forecasts. Pundits had predicted “Date Night” would open in the $23-27 million range, with “Clash” seen earning about $25 million.

Internationally, it was no competition. “Clash” led the field for a second weekend with sales of $54 million from 31 countries, taking its total to $119.2 million.

The mythological epic opened at No. 1 in Russia, France and Germany, Warner Bros. said. “Date Night” earned a modest $7.1 million in 35 markets, led by a $2 million contribution from a No. 3 opening in Australia, Fox said.

‘DATE NIGHT’ EARNS $7.1 MILLION OVERSEAS

Carell (“The Office”) and Fey (“30 Rock”) star in “Date Night” as a suburban couple pursued by crooks in a case of mistaken identity. Shawn Levy (“Night at the Museum”) directed the critically acclaimed film. Fox, a unit of News Corp (NWSA.O), said the $55 million movie skewed to older couples.

“Clash of the Titans,” the latest action film to jump on the lucrative 3D bandwagon in the wake of the success of “Avatar,” has earned $110.5 million after its first 10 days. It lost 56 percent of its opening-weekend audience, a slightly smaller drop than pundits had forecast. Warner Bros. is a unit of Time Warner Inc (TWX.N).

Former champion “How to Train Your Dragon” was a close No. 3 with $25.4 million, falling just 13 percent from last weekend. The DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc (DWA.O) production has earned $133.9 million after three weekends.

Rounding out the top five were filmmaker Tyler Perry’s sequel “Why Did I Get Married Too?” with $11 million, and the Miley Cyrus drama “The Last Song” with $10 million. Both in their second weekends, they have tallied $48.5 million and $42.4 million, respectively.

“Why Did I Get Married Too?” was released by Lionsgate, a unit of Lions Gate Entertainment Corp (LGF.N). “The Last Song” was released by Walt Disney Pictures, a unit of Walt Disney Co (DIS.N). (Reporting by Dean Goodman; editing by Paul Simao and Todd Eastham)

Tina Fey loves to drop the F-bombs

New York, March 22 (ANI): Comedienne Tina Fey has confessed she loves swearing and thinks the use of swear words can even get “charming” at a certain age.

The “30 Rock” star, who plays Liz Lemon in the hit series, told Esquire “I really love cursing a lot” and spoke of her fondness of F-bombs.

“But as I get older, I realize it”s a little unseemly for women of a certain age,” the New York Daily News quoted her as saying.

“But once you pass 65, you can hit it full tilt again and it”s charming,” the 39-year-old added. (ANI)

Alec Baldwin has ‘body double for 30 Rock role’

Washington, September 12 (ANI): Actor Alec Baldwin has a body double for his 30 Rock role, as he can’t spare enough time to film it himself, it has emerged.

The star apparently works just three days a week, as he needs to travel back to Los Angeles to spend time with his daughter Ireland.

According to sources, such a situation has led to the comedy show’s creator and star, Tina Fey, organizing rehearsals and scenes around Baldwin’s absence, by using a stand-in.

“Tina saves Alec’s speaking lines for his arrival on set, but everything else is shot with a stand-in,” Fox News quoted an on-set source as saying.

Most shots featuring Baldwin’s character are shot from behind or sideways.

The insider said: “Those [body double takes] make it into the final cut of the show. There are many back shots and side shots that don’t show Alec’s face, because it is his stand-in on Alec’s days off.

“The goal is to have everything ready to shoot Alec when he’s there, with as little stress as possible.

“He does not have the desire to be tied to a set six or seven days a week, and Tina was willing to work it so that he could get everything he wanted. Alec can pretty much do anything he wants at ’30 Rock’.” (ANI)

Actor Alec Baldwin gives ‘serious thought’ to political bid

London, July 9 (ANI): Alec Baldwin is considering swapping his acting career with a political one in the US, saying he is giving “a lot of serious thought” to the bid.

The 30 Rock star, in an article on his blog, said that serving voters was “a sacred trust” and that he had the “desire” to run for office.

The 51-year-old Democrat, who has two Golden Globes and an Emmy award to his credit, said that he was yet to decide on a specific political office, reports the BBC.

The actor told Playboy magazine that he would not leave his hometown for a political career, saying: “I’m a carry-me-out-in-a-box New Yorker.”(ANI)

Alec Baldwin to pen parenting book

Washington, June 22 (ANI): Alec Baldwin is planning to pen a parenting book as the actor fears parents may be going too soft on their kids.

The 30 Rock star, who previously revealed that he had become suicidal after his private voicemail to his daughter calling her a “rude little pig” was leaked, said that he was stunned at the way kids were being handled nowadays.

The 51-year-old explained that some parents opted to treat their children kindly at all times since they themselves were yet to get over their harsh past at the hands of their own parents.

“It will be ironic for some people, but I’m going to write a parenting book,” Contactmusic quoted him as telling Playboy magazine.

“We’re at… an awful place right now in terms of parenting. People are raising their children with the belief that we need to be friends with our children.

“Kids have too much power and call too many of the shots, telling their parents what they will and won’t do,” he added. (ANI)

NBC sees some hope with Thursday premieres

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – A pair of series premieres Thursday night gave NBC hope for an eleventh-hour comeback this season.

The 10 p.m. debut of the network’s new cop drama “Southland” was narrowly topped by the premiere of CBS’ mystery-thriller “Harper’s Island,” while Amy Poehler’s comedy “Parks and Recreation” opened to a solid number.

“Southland” (9.9 million viewers), from “ER” producer John Wells, built solidly on its “30 Rock” lead-in (6.7 million).

“Harper’s Island” pulled in more viewers (10.2 million), but it lost a big chunk of its “CSI” lead-in (16.7 million), and lost viewers during the telecast. ABC aired repeats.

NBC surrounded 8:30 p.m.’s “Parks” (6.9 million) with two original episodes of “The Office” (7.3 million and (8 million). It replaced “Kath and Kim,” which premiered to 7.5 million viewers last October and went on to average 4.9 million during its 17-episode run.

Neither of NBC’s premieres posted numbers the fourth-ranked network would have celebrated last fall. But coming near the end of another difficult season, they’re refreshing in the wake of dismal performances by the likes of “Kings” and “Chopping Block.”

“Clearly it’s a marathon and not a sprint, but we’re really invested in these shows, and they are really super-high quality, and last night gives us some space and belief that they’ll continue to perform,” NBC co-chairman Ben Silverman said.

“Southland” and “Parks” demonstrated what could be described as “inconclusive potential” Thursday night, and the network hopes that when heavy-hitting ABC returns to originals in two weeks, the new shows will hold their own.
