McIlroy lives up to hype with breakthrough win

Rory McIlroy shot a course record 10-under-par 62 on Sunday to win the Quail Hollow championship by four strokes and enhance his reputation as one of the brightest emerging talents in professional golf.

The Briton blew away a top-quality field which included Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson to become the youngest player since Woods to win on the PGA Tour, finishing at 15-under after a masterclass of shotmaking on a notoriously difficult course.

“Ever since I was 10 or 11, I wanted to be a professional golfer and you know it’s been a crazy ride to this point,” McIlroy told reporters after sealing victory two days before his 21st birthday.

“I’m going to have a bit of a party on Tuesday night.”

Mickelson, chasing back-to-back titles after winning the U.S. Masters last month, closed with a 68 to finish outright second at 11-under while Angel Cabrera of Argentina also carded a 68 to finish third, a further shot back.

Zimbabwean Brendon de Jonge was fourth and Bo Van Pelt fifth as overnight leader Billy Mayfair fell out of contention after shooting 76, but no-one could keep pace with McIlroy.

“I thought a 68 would be good enough,” Mickelson said. “But I’ve got to congratulate Rory, you just never expect something like 62.

“He’s an incredible player, just an amazing talent.”

WOODS WOES

Woods limped out of the tournament on Friday after failing to make the cut for only the sixth time as a professional, raising questions about how long he can continue to dominate the game after the sordid revelations about his extramarital affairs.

Mickelson is rapidly closing in on the number one ranking and on the same day McIlroy won his maiden title in the U.S., 18-year-old Ryo Ishikawa shot a 58, the lowest single round score on any of the major golf tours, to win in Japan.

“He’s the guy that we followed and the guy that we turned on our TV and the guy that we went out to practice so hard,” McIlroy said.

“All the younger guys have flourished at such an early age because Tiger set the benchmark so high.”

McIlroy has been earmarked for greatness since his early teens and won his first European PGA title in Dubai last year but his final day at Quail Hollow was undoubtedly his finest performance to date.

He almost missed the cut himself, scraping in by a single stroke Friday after making an eagle at his third last hole, but fired a 66 on Saturday to give himself an outside chance of winning.

He started the final round four shots off the lead in a tie for seventh but stormed to the top of the leaderboard with eight birdies and an eagle.

He completed the last six holes in just 18 shots, making an eagle at the par-five 15th when he drilled a five iron from 206 yards to within four feet then draining a 43-foot putt on the last to break the previous course record by two shots.

“To cap a day off like that was probably fitting, it’s one of those moments that you’ll always remember,” he said.

Tibetan women launch art campaign to mark Panchen Lama”s birthday

Dharamsala, Apr 26 (ANI): The Tibetan Women”s Association launched an art campaign in Dharamsala to mark the birthday of the 11th Panchen Lama.

The 11th Panchen Lama is the second highest-ranking figure in Tibetan Buddhism.

Sunday marked the 21st birthday of Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, named by Tibet”s spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, as the 11th Panchen Lama.

Prayers were held at several places in India including the northern hill station of Dharamsala, home to the Dalai Lama, on Sunday.

More than 20 acclaimed Tibetan artists created a portrait of the imaginary face of the 21-year-old Panchen Lama, during the Panchen Lama Artwork Campaign.

One of the portraits made by the artists would be chosen as an emblem for the campaigns aimed at pressing for the release of Panchen Lama.

“All of us are really saddened by the fact that despite 15 years of his imprisonment and despite 15 years of our consistent call for his release, we have not heard a word about him since his abduction in 1995,” said Dhardon Sharling, spokesperson of Tibetan Women”s Association

“Today, we are all remembering the Panchen Lama, who is the most important spiritual leader for Tibetan Buddhism and for the Tibetan people at large,” he added.

Also, as a part of the awareness campaign, young monks and nuns from the monastic institutes in and around Dharamsala wrote essays expressing their thoughts on the Panchen Lama.

“Today is the 21st birthday of the Panchen Lama. We have come here to share our feelings. We are just writing some poems and whatever we feel about him,” said Tenzin Cheodon, a Tibetan Buddhist nun.

After the 10th Panchen Lama died in 1989, Beijing and the Dalai Lama made rival choices for his successor, and the Dalai Lama”s choice, then aged six, suddenly disappeared from public view. (ANI)

According to sources, Brown has been looking for places like clubs in New York, Miami and Las Vegas.

“They don”t want to mess up their relationship, or their potential relationship, with Rihanna,” the New York Post quoted a source as saying.

Brown is now said to be looking for private homes or restaurants in Manhattan. (ANI)

Free-hitting Tamim attacks England bowling

Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah plundered the England bowling to lead Bangladesh to 8 for 330 at close on the opening day of the second Test in Mirpur.

Off spinners Graeme Swann and James Tredwell shared five wickets between them to restore some parity as the tourists recovered from the early onslaught of Tamim, who had given them a storming start with 85 off 71 balls in the morning session.

Tamim celebrated his 21st birthday with fireworks, attacking every England bowler before debutant off spinner Tredwell had him caught by wicketkeeper Matt Prior.

The left-handed opener made his intentions clear when he got off the mark with a boundary off the first ball of the innings and completed his fifty in just 34 deliveries with three successive fours off Swann.

He blasted the next ball for a six to take 20 runs from what was Swann’s third over in the game as Bangladesh made the most of favourable batting conditions.

Tamim, who was dropped by Paul Collingwood off Tim Bresnan on 11 and by skipper Alastair Cook at mid on off Stuart Broad on 36, clubbed 13 fours and a six in his sixth Test fifty.

Broad ended a 53-run opening stand between Tamim and Imrul Kayes, with Steven Finn taking a fine diving catch to dismiss the latter for 12, but Bangladesh still raced to 95 runs in the first hour.

After Tredwell ended Tamim’s 66-run second wicket stand with Zunaed Siddique, Swann showed he had recovered from his earlier battering by trapping debutant Jahirul Islam lbw for a duck.

Swann later dismissed Zunaed lbw for 39 to give England its first success in the post-lunch session.

Finn claimed the wicket of Mahmudullah in the first ball of his second spell with Collingwood taking an easy catch at backward point.

Mahmudullah was dismissed for 59 after sharing a fifth-wicket stand of 59 with skipper Shakib Al Hasan.

Shakib fell one run short of his fifty when he was trapped lbw by Tredwell.

Vice-captain Mushfiqur Rahim took charge after Shakib’s departure and hit some beautiful shots before Bresnan had him caught behind for 30.

Swann picked up his third wicket of the day by trapping Abdur Razzak (3). Naeem Islam (33 not out) and Shafiul Islam (8 not out) were at the crease at the close.

Mom’s no show at Brooke Hogan’s 21st birthday bash

Washington, May 13 (ANI): Brooke Hogan’s mother Linda Bollea was notably absent from her daughter’s 21st birthday party.

The singer brought in her coming-of-age birth anniversary last week at Sin City’s Spago Restaurant alongside her boyfriend, father Hulk, brother Nick, and a few close friends.

Brooke made multiple efforts to contact her mother and let her know that she was more than welcome at any of her birthday celebrations, and that she would love her to be there.

But, a source said, Linda preferred not to attend the intimate affair.

“Linda was really, really hurt. But Brooke has sided with her father in all of this, she was adamant about not celebrating with her mom or extending an invitation,” Fox News quoted another source as saying.

And after the dinner, Brooke partied with her beau inside PURE nightclub, while typically protective Hulk looked on disapprovingly.

Linda filed for divorce from the semi-retired, pro-wrestling husband in November 2007. (ANI)

Urban’s alcohol problems took our marriage for a toss: Kidman

Sydney, Apr 19 (ANI): Hollywood actress Nicole Kidman has admitted that her husband Keith Urban’s alcohol problems sent their fledgling union into a tailspin.

“We were thrown into his alcohol problems three months into the marriage and that was big,” The Sydney Morning Herald quoted the 41-year-old actress, as telling the Daily Mail newspaper.

The Australian beauty confessed that Urban had admitted his problem and spent time in rehabilitation, a step that made their relationship stronger.

“We became the closest we could become because we had to bare our souls. We did 10 years of marriage in just three months. When the addiction takes control of someone’s life, it’s terrifying. But there is hope, and we work on it every day,” she said.

Kidman said that giving birth to Sunday Rose in her 40s has given her a greater sense of her own mortality.

“It’s bittersweet,” she said.

“I want to be around to see Sunday Rose’s 21st birthday . . . My relationship with death used to be far more ambivalent . . . now it feels much more important for me to stay in the world,” she added. (ANI)

Domestic violence experts dismayed by Rihanna-Chris Brown ‘reunion’

New York, Mar 1 (ANI): Domestic violence experts were dismayed – but not surprised – after learning of Rihanna’s reunion with boyfriend Chris Brown.

Brown, 19, who was arrested for allegedly assaulting 21-year-old ‘Umbrella’ singer, was charged with making criminal threats following an alleged attack on Rihanna after a pre-Grammys party on February 8.

Since the incident, Brown was trying hard to get back to Rihanna by showering her with expensive gifts. He even called Rihanna on her 21st birthday to apologise.

Following the incident, Rihanna had scrapped a planned birthday bash in New York and postponed concerts overseas. The pair is currently at one of Sean ‘Diddy Combs’ homes.

Now, experts are concerned what message this would send to the beauty’s fans, reports The New York Daily News.

“It makes perfect sense that she would go back to him,” said Madeline Garcia Bigelow, director of the domestic violence project at Manhattan’s Urban Justice Center.

“The reality is that when you’re in an intimate relationship with anyone you tend to give people chances,” Madeline added.

“I think it sends a really negative message that it’s okay to remain in an abusive relationship and just to accept an apology and move on,” said Manhattan psychologist Dr. Jane Greer.

“I think she’s a role model and that’s why it’s such a concern,” Jane added. (ANI)
