Shiv Sena-BJP alliance confident of victory in Maharashtra assembly polls

Mumbai, Sep 19(ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena on Saturday expressed confidence about emerging victorious in the forthcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections.

“It is 45 years since Shiv Sena came into being. And this first day of Navaratri happens to be a red-letter day in the history of Shiv Sena that has crusaded for the cause of Samyukta (unified) Maharashtra. Considering all these aspects, I feel it is an auspicious timing (of) declaring the seat arrangement and we are confident of our combine emerging victorious,” said Uddhav Thackeray, Executive President of Shiv Sena party.

Leaders of both the parties confirmed that there was no bargaining for seats between the two allies.

“Today, is the first day of Dussera and we have arrived at the figures of seat sharing. Yes, it is 169 and 119. The 169 in favour of Shiv Sena and 119 for BJP and it will be interesting to note that both the figures end in 9, a lucky number; 169 and 119. And now onwards we will work on joint strategy. There is no clash of interests and now onwards we will devote to the selection of suitable candidates,” said Gopinath Munde, senior BJP leader.

In the 2004 elections, Shiv Sena had contested for 171 seats while BJP had contested for 117 and jointly they had bagged 119 seats in the legislative house of 289 members.

The alliance of Congress and regional National Congress Party (NCP) had emerged victorious in the 2004 polls. (ANI)

Lalu Yadav wants to work for RJD’s revival in Bihar

Patna, May 24 (ANI): Having suffered a major jolt in the recently held elections, the Rashtriya Janata Dal supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav wants to revive his relations with the people of Bihar and revive his party’s fortune.

Addressing a meeting here on Sunday, Lalu said that he would spend time with the people over the next one year so as to revive his party.

“I am not going to Delhi. I will spend all my time in Bihar. I will visit all the villages in Bihar. I will spend one year among the poor people,” said Lalu Prasad Yadav.

RJD was able to bag only four seats in the recently concluded general polls, 18 less than what it got in 2004 elections.

Just prior to the polls Lalu entered into an alliance with regional Lok Janashakti Party (LJP) headed Ramvilas Paswan and Samajwadi Party (SP) headed by Mulayam Singh to form the Fourth Front.

The Fourth Front faced an embarrassing defeat, with LJP’s supreme losing his own seat and Lalu Yadav’s party garnering just 4 seats. The three parties were unable to retain even half of the 64 seats won by the trio in 2004.

Having committed the folly of not contesting jointly with the Congress party, these parties faced reverses in their strongholds of India’s eastern Bihar and Uttar Pradesh states. (ANI)

C.P. Joshi: a quiet performer in Rajasthan politics

C.P. Joshi: a quiet performer in Rajasthan politicsNew Delhi, May 22 (IANS) C.P. Joshi, a professor of psychology who turned to politics and swung the December 2008 Rajasthan assembly election result in the favour of the Congress, gets a central cabinet berth Friday. Though he comes off as a shy and simple man, he seems quite adept at realpolitik.

Joshi, 58, has won the Lok Sabha elections from Bhilwara constituency in Rajasthan.

As the state unit president of the party, he is credited as the architect of the Congress victory in the assembly elections — though he himself had lost by just one vote.

It is his and Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot’s efforts that the Congress walked away with as many as 19 of the total 25 parliamentary seats in the state. This was a total shock to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which had won 21 seats in the 2004 elections.

Joshi was a cabinet minister in Rajasthan from 1998 to 2003 and held important portfolios like education, panchayati raj, rural development, public health engineering, policy planning and information technology.

Joshi, who sports a light beard, was born in Kunwaria in Rajsamand district July 29, 1950 and did his masters in physics and a doctorate in psychology besides holding a bachelors degree in law.

Narendra Modi in Delhi for negotiations with Third Front

New Delhi, May 14 (ANI): Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi arrived here today to begin negotiations two days before the final counting.

Modi is scheduled to begin negotiations with the Third Front leaders. He is expected to hold talks with All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) Chief J Jayalalithaa.

Earlier, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader M Venkaiah Naidu met Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Chief Chandrababu Naidu.

On Wednesday, BJP president Rajnath Singh said the BJP will emerge as the single largest party and NDA will form the next government after votes are counted on May 16.

“The BJP will emerge as the single largest party. The BJP-led NDA will get a majority or will fall short by a small margin in which case I am confident that other political parties will support us,” Singh said.

Singh refused to name the political parties, which are likely to extend support if NDA falls short of a majority.

“This is a part of our strategy. I will not say anything at all on this issue,” he added.

The BJP-led NDA is trailing behind the Congress-led UPA in the projections given by different exit polls in the Lok Sabha elections.

The surveys shown by electronic channels after the end of fifth phase of polling placed the BJP-led NDA not very far behind the UPA and the Third Front likely to get little over 100 seats.

The exit polls were proved wrong in 2004 Lok Sabha polls, with most of them projecting BJP-led NDA as the winner which did not turn out to be correct.

In 2004 elections, the Congress and its pre-poll allies got 216 seats against a projection ranging from 170 to 205 seats. The BJP-led NDA had secured 187 seats against the projections of over 240. (ANI)

Congress-led UPA slightly ahead of BJP led NDA in exit polls

New Delhi, May 13 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party led NDA is trailing behind the Congress-led UPA in the projections given by different exit polls in the Lok Sabha elections.

The surveys shown by electronic channels after the end of fifth phase of polling today placed the BJP-led NDA not very far behind the UPA and the Third Front likely to get little over 100 seats.

Star News channel gave Congress led UPA 199 seats against 197 of BJP led NDA followed by 100 seats to Third Front and the Fourth Front getting 36 seats.

India TV channel projected UPA to get anywhere between 195 to 227 if 32 seats of RJD, LJP and SP are added. The channel gave NDA 189 and the Third Front 113. Others are projected to get 14 seats

Headlines Today channel gave Congress and its allies 191 seats against 180 to BJP and its allies. The Left parties, which played a crucial role in the outgoing Lok Sabha with 60 seats, has been projected to get 38 while.

The exit polls were proved wrong in 2004 Lok Sabha polls, with most of them projecting BJP-led NDA as the winner which did not turn out to be correct.

CPI-M will not support Congress under any circumstances: Karat

London, April 14 (IANS) Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) general secretary Prakash Karat has ruled out supporting any Congress-led alliance after the elections – ‘whatever the circumstances’.

The Marxists will not support the Congress even if it were the only way to prevent the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from coming to power, Karat told the BBC’s Hindi-language service in an exclusive interview.

‘That (preventing the BJP’s return to power at any cost) was our slogan in the 2004 elections. This time we are going to the people with an appeal to defeat the Congress as well.’

Karat said his stance had won the approval of the CPI-M Central Committee and denied the Third Front was an opportunistic alliance.

‘We have a shared ideology on [anti-economic reform] and we are all opposed to a strategic relationship with the US. Also we favour a truly federal structure in a country as vast as India.’

Ruling himself out of the race for prime ministership, he said, ‘Many leaders are competent. From our point of view we have no pre-conceived notions on who the prime minister should be. We are more concerned about the policies of the next government.’

‘I am very happy being the party general secretary and would rather retain this than have any other role in public life,’ he added.

Former Haryana CM Bhajan Lal to contest from Hisar

Chandigarh, Apr 11 (ANI): Former Haryana Chief Minister Bhajan Lal will contest the general elections from Hisar parliamentary constituency on a Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC) ticket.

Lal, the nine-time MLA and two-time MP, would contest against Congress’ Jai Prakash and Indian National Lok Dal’s (INLD) Sampat Singh.

Lal had floated the Congress in December 2007 after being sidelined in the state unit of the party. He was later disqualified from the state assembly for forming a separate party while being a member of the Congress.

Bhajan Lal’s son and HJC chief Kuldeep Bishnoi has decided to not to contest elections this time.

Bishnoi, who was elected to the Lok Sabha on a Congress ticket from Bhiwani parliamentary constituency in the 2004 elections, was also disqualified as an MP on similar grounds.

The polls in Haryana are scheduled to be held on May 7. (ANI)

Pre-poll surveys in Kerala predict sweep by Congress-led front

Thiruvananthapuram, April 11 (IANS) With just five days to go for the Lok Sabha elections, three pre-poll surveys in Kerala predict a sweep by the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) but the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) is still hopeful of good results.

The first prediction that came out Thursday was The Week-Zee Voter durvey, which said the UDF is likely to win 15 seats and the LDF five.

Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan responded Friday evening by saying that the party won 18 seats in the 2004 elections and will win all 20 this time.

Hours after Vijayan’s statement, the Times of India came out with its survey results, which were on the same lines as The Week-Zee Voter, predicting 15 seats for the UDF and five for the LDF.

Another report based on a pre-poll survey carried out by two market research firms – Thiruvananthapuram-based RGIDS and Kochi-based Sameeksha Research and Analytical Consultancy – predicted 18 seats for the UDF and two for the LDF.

Congress leader Oommen Chandy said he was confident that his party would perform extremely well in the polls.

‘We will sweep the polls like in 1977. I speak from the response I got after my tour of all the 20 Lok Sabha seats,’ said Chandy.

In 1977, the Congress-led coalition won all the 20 seats but it had the support of the Communist Party of India (CPI) at that time.

No objection to forming Telangana state, says Sonia

Hyderabad, April 7 (IANS) Congress president Sonia Gandhi Tuesday said her party has no objection to carving out a separate state of Telangana, but stopped short of making any commitment on the issue.

Addressing two public meetings as part of the party’s campaign in the backward Telangana region, she said the Congress would take up the issue on priority.

‘As far as Telangana is concerned, the chief minister (Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy) has made a statement in the assembly and the Congress has also said in its election manifesto that it has no objection to formation of a separate Telangana state and will take up this issue on priority,’ Gandhi said in meetings in Karimnagar and Bhongir in Nalgonda district.

The Telangana region along with north coastal Andhra will go to Lok Sabha and assembly polls in the first phase April 16.

In the 2004 elections, Gandhi had promised that her party would respect the sentiments of the people of the region. The Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), fighting for separate statehood to Telangana, was then an ally of the Congress.

This time the Congress is contesting the elections on its own while the TRS along with the Left parties has joined a grand alliance led by the state’s main opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP).

Gandhi criticised the TDP for its somersault on the issue but refrained from attacking the TRS.

‘The same TDP, which opposed separate Telangana state, is today trying to be the biggest votary of Telangana. I want to ask them: why they failed to give separate statehood to Telangana region during their rule? What have they done for Telangana and its development?’ she asked.

She pointed out that the Congress government under the leadership of Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy took up several irrigation projects and set up an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Telangana.

In February this year the state’s Congress government set up a legislative committee to go into the issues raised by the demand for a separate state.

Govinda clarifies his position on poll code violation

Mumbai, Mar 21 (ANI): Actor turned Congress MP Govinda visited a Mumbai District Collector’s office on Friday and clarified his position on poll code violation charges.

Govinda had been charged for allegedly distributing cash at a function to celebrate Holi.

“If he tries to induce the voters, or if a candidate tries to induce voters, it amounts to bribery. He can be prosecuted,” said Vishwas Patil, the western Mumbai suburban District Collector.

Govinda denied any wrongdoing.

“I think this is wrong. Religion, tradition and culture cannot be linked to politics. Neither, it was my constituency nor have I filed my nomination from there. Even it is not proved that the poor people were from my constituency. So it was my responsibility to answer the queries,” he said.

Poll authorities on March 12 announced an inquiry into the case.

Govinda had been accused of violating the Model Code of Conduct by the Election Commission for distributing money during Holi.

Maharashtra Chief Electoral Officer Debashish Chakrabarty ordered an inquiry into the incident in which Govinda allegedly distributed cash outside his Juhu residence last Wednesday.

Sri Lanka opposition leader under pressure to step down

Colombo – Sri Lanka’s opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe who signed a Norwegian-backed peace deal with Tamil rebels as the country’s prime minister in
2002, is under pressure from his own party to step down, local newspapers said Wednesday.

A section of lawmakers from the opposition United National Party (UNP) Wickremesinghe to step down.

Senior party members are to meet Wednesday night for discussions on the issue.

The calls for Wickremesinghe to step down because of his “unpopularity” come amidst successive military victories for the government of President Mahinda Rajapaksa against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, which help to boost Rajapaska’s ratings.

Wickremesinghe, who turns 60 on March 24, shot to the limelight in 1993 when he was named premier after then-president Ranasinghe Premadasa was killed by a Tamil suicide bomber and then-premier DB Wijetunga took over the presidency.

He came under party-internal criticism as he has lost 18 local and national elections since 1994, but was prime minister a second time from late 2001 to early 2004.

Nearly half of the 80 UNP lawmakers have crossed over to Rajapaksa’s government since the 2004 elections, some of them holding important portfolios. (dpa)

Govinda accused of violating Model Code of Conduct

Mumbai, Mar. 13 (ANI): Actor turned Congress MP Govinda has been accused of violating the Model Code of Conduct by the Election Commission for distributing money during Holi.

Maharashtra Chief Electoral Officer Debashish Chakrabarty has ordered an inquiry into the incident in which Govinda allegedly distributed cash outside his Juhu residence on Wednesday.

“I have directed the returning officer Ashwini Joshi to find out whether the Model Code of Conduct has been violated by Govinda. Once the report is ready, it will be forwarded to the CEO,” Suburban Collector Vishwas Patil said.

The Bollywood comedian, however, defended himself by saying that distributing money during Holi has been a ritual of him for years.

“I really don’t know why such a big issue is being made out of this. This is a ritual I do every year. I donate money to the poor and needy, and these include eunuchs, poor people in my area and actors who are financially in a bad shape,” Govinda said.

Even during the 2004 elections, Govinda’s was accused of violating the Model Code of Conduct for using pictures of national personalities and saints during his campaign. (ANI)

RJD to contest 2009 elections in Bihar with UPA allies

New Delhi, Feb 24 (ANI): Union Railway Minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad Yadav on Tuesday said his party would contest the Lok Sabha polls in Bihar along with United Progressive Alliance (UPA) allies.

“Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and RJD, which are the UPA allies will contest together. I want that we contest together,” Lalu told media persons in Parliament.

He, however, ruled out conceding more than 13 seats given to the UPA allies in 2004 elections.

The Minister stated that none of the allies would give up the seat if there was no consensus.

“None of us would give up a seat if there was no consensus. We will sit together and discuss,” he said.

In the 2004 General Elections, RJD contested 26 seats, LJP (8), Congress (4) and NCP (1), in the 40-seat State Assembly. (ANI)
