I did not prepare Italy fully, says Lippi

(Reuters) – Italy coach Marcello Lippi took full responsibility for their humiliating World Cup group stage exit on Thursday although the players also accepted their share of the blame for a dreadful campaign.

Sports | Italy

The holders lost 3-2 to World Cup debutants Slovakia, who qualified for the last 16 with Paraguay from what had looked an easy-looking Group F for Italy.

“I take all responsibility. I haven’t prepared this team well enough,” an ashen-faced Lippi told a news conference without even being prompted by a question.

“I didn’t think we could win the World Cup but I though we would do better.”

In a strikingly honest assessment of what went wrong, Lippi pummeled himself verbally for 15 minutes.

“I failed to train the team well enough, they weren’t ready for such an important match. For an hour and 15 minutes, for psychological reasons I think, nothing worked,” he said.

The 62-year-old, a national hero when he led the Azzurri to 2006 World Cup glory, had already announced he would step down again after the finals. He will be replaced by Cesare Prandelli.

Lippi first quit straight after their triumph in Germany but returned in 2008 after Italy’s disappointing European Championship campaign under Roberto Donadoni.

“I don’t regret coming back, I came back with great enthusiasm,” he added.

His stark words took some of the sting out of the Italian reporters who were waiting to savage a campaign that began with two 1-1 draws.

“I have no intention of getting straight back into coaching and training after this,” added Lippi. “I’ll take some months off and we will see.”

At previous tournaments, Italy have often blamed controversial refereeing decisions for causing their exit but this time they all collectively hung their heads in shame.

“When we won the World Cup we all got given national medals of honor. Now they’ll give us medals of shame, which is right,” midfielder Gennaro Gattuso told reporters having played his last game for the Azzurri before international retirement.

“Italian football must examine its conscience. Tonight we have reached rock bottom,” he added.

Midfielder Andrea Pirlo, who said he would not quit Italy but feared a cycle had ended, echoed Gattuso’s views.

“We have done something shameful,” he said. “We haven’t won a game. It’s everyone’s fault.”

Jonas Brothers spent more than 30mins trapped inside elevator

New York, May 20 (ANI): The Jonas Brothers and one of their bodyguards found themselves trapped in an elevator for almost an hour after their sold-out LA concert at The Grove, it has emerged.

“For the first 15 minutes they thought it was funny, but after 30 they started to worry,” the New York Post quoted an insider, as saying.

The source added: “Security guards finally managed to pry open the doors. The elevator was between floors. The brothers are skinny and easily squeezed out, but it was tougher for their giant bodyguard.”

A rep for the band said the singers got stuck for 30 minutes and added, “Everybody got out fine.” (ANI)

YouTube marks 5th b’day with 2 billion hits everyday

London, May 18 (ANI): It has been 5 years since the inception of YouTube, the video sharing website, and it is still going strong – with an astounding 2 billion hits per day.

According to Google – its owner – that”s nearly double the number of people who tune into the US”s three prime time TV stations combined.

Just seven months ago it clocked up to one billion downloads a day.

“I see this great growth opportunity in the online video market and we are positioning ourselves to be a leader,” BBC News quoted co-founder Chad Hurley as saying.

“We are a stage and we give everyone in the world an opportunity to participate and that is being a video platform for creating a solution for people to not only upload and distribute their videos on a global basis but to find and share videos.”

While he is ecstatic about the achievement, he insists that they have a longer way to go.

“Two billion video streams is a large number but on average people are only spending 15 minutes a day on the site compared to five hours a day watching TV.

“I don”t think we could have ever planned or imagined we would get to the scale or the size we are today. We were mostly trying to create a video solution for ourselves based on our own frustrations. We are proud of what we have achieved so far but we have a lot of work ahead,” said Hurley.

Google bought the site near the end of 2006 for 1.65 billion dollars – a sparse looking page on which the first video ever was posted by co-founder Jawed Karim.

And from thereon began a trend – with people posting everything from cat videos to political videos to “how to” videos to entertainment.

“We wanted to create a level playing field that gave everyone that ability to be seen and heard,” said Hurley.

“Maybe early on people only recognised us or explained YouTube by placing it in a box but there are so many people on our site and we receive so much content over a 24 hour period, it can”t be about one thing,” said Hurley.

YouTube made a mark with several other videos – that of a wounded girl dying in front of a crowd during the Iranian election protests, a YouTube interview with President Barack Obama, Ronaldinho”s Nike advert and singer Susan Boyle”s performance on Britain”s Got Talent competition on TV.

“YouTube really is a phenomenon and is very much part of popular culture,” said Catharine P Taylor, media blogger at news website BNET.com.

“It really is a game changer because it gives everybody a platform to broadcast from. There are many examples where an average citizen has become a big hit on YouTube and that is something that would have been impossible to contemplate five, six years ago.”

The slogan for YouTube is “Broadcast Yourself” which Hurley said was a play on “be yourself and also captured in my mind the essence of the site which was to let people express themselves.”

YouTube started has had temporary glitches over copyright issues ever since it was started. But the owners have ensured that it is pulled out as soon as possible to avoid getting into any legal tangles.

“They have made a lot of progress about weeding out illegal content,” said Allen Weiner senior vice president of research at Gartner.

“They are serious about it. Their future depends on it.” (ANI)

Brit women ‘too busy to take care of themselves’

London, May 10 (ANI): A new survey has revealed that British women do not have time to care for their looks. They barely exercise and almost always resort to takeaway meals.

The survey of 1,000 women by sweets firm Panda Licorice, revealed that 45 per cent spend less than 10 minutes a day on hair and make-up. They have only two hours per week for ‘me’ time.

Seven in 10 get dressed in less than a 15 minutes. Nearly three-quarters of women say they would love to have more time to themselves, reports the Daily Express.

Nearly 500 admitted doing less than 30 minutes’ exercise a week, with nearly one in five not doing any.

Only one in 10 women find the time to cook an evening meal from scratch, with four in five regularly resorting to takeaway meals. (ANI)

”Joe the Plumber” wins seat on Ohio GOP committee

Columbus (Ohio, US), May 6 (ANI): Samuel `Joe the Plumber’ Wurzelbacher, who stumped for Senator John McCain during the 2008 presidential campaign, is now a political player in Ohio.

According to the New York Daily News, Wurzelbacher won a seat on the local Republican Party committee in Toledo”s Lucas County.

He nabbed the seat, one of 400, with a 38-24 vote.

The group is responsible for selecting the county chairman and setting the party”s local agenda.

In 2008, Wurzelbacher was thrust into the spotlight when McCain referred to him as “Joe the Plumber” during a debate with then Senator Barack Obama.

Even though his name was not Joe, and he was not technically a plumber, he soon became a popular sound bite.

Wurzelbacher has turned his 15 minutes of fame into a political career.

He has written a book, “Joe the Plumber: Fighting for the American Dream,” and speaks at events around the country.

An effort to draft him to run for Congress last year ultimately fizzled out. (ANI)

Judy Moran acted oddly at murder scene: witness

The Melbourne Magistrates Court has heard Judy Moran was acting unnaturally and oddly when she arrived at the scene of her brother-in-law’s murder.

Judy Moran is one of four people accused of the murder of Des Moran, who was shot dead in an Ascot Vale cafe last year.

The witness told the committal hearing that Judy Moran arrived at the murder scene within 15 minutes.

She told the court that after Judy Moran arrived, another woman commented that it was funny how quickly word spread about the murder.

The woman also told the court Judy Moran did not try to go near the cafe where her brother-in-law was shot.

“I couldn’t work out why she was walking around near the police and not going to the Ascot Vale Deli,” she said.

She thought Judy Moran was acting oddly when she ran over to police as they cordoned the area.

“She bent over, put her head down and seemed to be crying and carrying on, stamping her feet.”

Three others have been charged with the murder including Suzanne Kane, 46, Geoff Armour, 44, and Michael Farrugia, 45.

‘I would have been killed’: survivor criticises CFA advice

A man who lost his father in St Andrews on Black Saturday has said he “would have been killed” too if he had followed CFA advice on what to do in a bushfire.

Robert Pierce, 62, died while staying to defend his house in St Andrews, despite sheltering in a bunker-like structure with metal shutters.

The commission heard the Country Fire Authority (CFA) had previously inspected the house and advised that it was defendable.

Mr Pierce’s son Nicolas successfully defended another house 300 metres away.

But Nicolas Pierce told the inquiry he had not followed CFA guidelines about putting out spot fires and said, had he been doing so when the main fire hit, he would not have survived.

He also said the CFA advised that a fire front ordinarily lasted 10 to 15 minutes, but on February 7th, it took more than an hour to pass.

McCamey, Davis lead Illinois over Michigan 51-44

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Demetri McCamey scored 14 points and Mike Davis added 13 points and 12 rebounds as Illinois beat Michigan 51-44 Tuesday night.

The Fighting Illini (18-10, 10-5 Big Ten) were coming off a 2-2 stretch in which they had played four straight Top 20 teams, and had an easier time with the struggling Wolverines.

Michigan (13-14, 6-9) got 15 points from Manny Harris, but still fell back below .500 a season after ending an 11-year NCAA tournament drought.

Illinois led 26-18 at the half, holding Michigan to 20 percent shooting, but went into an offensive slump of its own at the start of the second half. The Fighting Illini missed their first nine shots of the half, allowing Michigan to take a 27-26 lead with 15 minutes to play.

Illinois, though, responded with a 15-6 run and held on to win.

Britons spend 1 month of their lives looking for TV remote!

London, Sept 18 (ANI): Britons waste one month of their lives searching for the television remote control, a new study has found.

After studying 4,000 individuals, the researchers found that the average viewer loses it an average of 3.2 times a week and spends more than four minutes looking for it each time, reports The Scotsman.

That means each week Brits spend 15 minutes hunting for the device.

Kathryn Drought, of Sky, who led the study to launch the broadcaster’s Free Weekend Pass, said: “The remote control is such a well-used item in the nation’s homes.

“It’s one of those things we’re forever trying to find – normally down the back of the sofa.

“TV plays such a big part in our lives. It’s not surprising who is in control of the remote is such a hot household topic.”

Three in ten volunteers admitted hiding the remote from a partner or housemate, and 17 per cent have thrown it at someone in a fit of “remote rage”, the study found. (ANI)

Jet Airways strike may end today

New Delhi, Sep 11 (ANI): The three-day stalemate at Jet Airways finally neared a resolution late on Thursday night with the management reportedly agreeing to reinstate the four sacked pilots and the agitating pilots agreeing to resume duty.

The formal agreement will come by Friday noon when the striking pilots will hold talks with the Jet Management.

The conciliation talks has been convened by Chief Labour Commissioner S K Mukhopadhyay.

The four-day strike has led to the cancellation of nearly 700 flights, costing hardships to over 28,000 passengers.

The report of compromise comes on Thursday after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh inquired about the crisis at the Cabinet meeting. The hopes for a solution were pinned on Friday’s conciliation talks convened by the Chief Labour Commissioner.

President of Aviation Guild Girish Kaushik said the pilots are ready to return to flying duties in 15 minutes from the moment their four colleagues are reinstated.

Kaushik hoped there would be some understanding at Friday’s conciliation talks.

Women spend about one year of their lives deciding what to wear

London, July 9 (ANI): A new poll’s findings suggest that women spend almost one year of their lives deciding what to wear.

The poll involving 2,491 women suggests that choosing outfits for work, nights out, dinner parties, holidays, gym, and other activities means the average woman will spend 287 days rifling through their wardrobe.

The researchers behind the study say that the biggest chunk of that time is used up picking a killer ensemble for Friday or Saturday nights out, or selecting the right clothes for a holiday. ccording to them, women, on average, spend 16 minutes every weekday morning deciding what to wear, and around 14 minutes on a Saturday or Sunday morning.

“What you wear has a direct impact on how you feel about yourself and it is important a woman feels exceptional in her outfit. Whatever the occasion your clothes portray an image and we understand this is fundamentally important to women,” the Telegraph quoted a spokesman for clothes giant Matalan, which compiled the results, as saying.

The study was based on an adult lifetime from the age of 16 to 60.

It showed that most women would spend around 20 minutes deciding what to wear before hitting the town on a weekend night.

The researchers say that week nights out can take up to 20 minutes a time too.

They further say that deciding on what clothes to take on holiday takes about 52 minutes each time.

On holiday, women generally take 10 minutes in the morning trying to find an acceptable outfit, with another 10 minutes spent picking evening clothes.

Besides, dinner parties, Christmas parties, and black tie events at around 36 minutes a time six times a year – adds up to three and a half days.

The study also found, on average, women will try on two outfits each morning before coming to a final decision, and that one in two women spend 15 minutes the night before work working out what to wear. (ANI)

Heavy rains cripple normal life in Mumbai

Western Railways delayed its service due to the submergence of tracks in Grant Road and Boriveli.

Road traffic was hit on the Eastern and Western highways of Mumbai with vehicles moving slowly due to poor visibility and water logging.

Brihan Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials were said to be struggling hard to reach places affected by water logging. (ANI)

Brit woman hangs herself on fishhooks as part of Paris shark protest

UGC to set up national ragging helpline by June 15

New Delhi, May 27 (IANS) The University Grants Commission (UGC) Wednesday issued guidelines for a national call centre to be set up to enable ragging victims from across the country to register their complaints by dialling a toll free number.
“The Education Consultancy India Ltd (ECIL) has been entrusted with the job of setting up of the national call centre. By June 15, it will be operational,” UGC Chairman Sukhadeo Thorat told reporters Wednesday.

The helpline will be equipped with software that will pass on the complaints directly to the head of the institution within 15 minutes to help the administration protect the victims.

Thorat said the helpline will operate around the clock and the UGC will monitor its functioning.

Under the anti-ragging laws, student offenders can be fined up to Rs.250,000 or rusticated for one to four semesters if found guilty of ragging.

The offence will be treated as a severe criminal act, he added.

The new provisions laid down by the UGC also requires that the parents and students give a written undertaking, at the time of admission, that they are aware of the ragging guidelines and will report any such incident.
