Melbourne, Jan 29, (ANI): The third-seeded duo of Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles cruised into the finals of men’s doubles of the Australian Open.

Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles defeated the unseeded Polish-Austrian pair of Lukasz Kubot and Oliver Marach 6-3 6-1 taking just 58 minutes to win their semifinal encounter.

Mahesh Bhupathi has now a chance to grab his fifth men’s doubles Grand Slam title, his first Australian Open title and 11th overall.

This Indo-Bahamian pair put up a sterling show at the net and broke their rivals once in the first set to take a 1-0 lead and then outplayed them in the second to clinch the issue. (ANI)

Teacher unveils book inspired by Obama and family

Washington, Jan 8 (ANI): A Prince George”s County teacher is so inspired by Barack Obama that he has gone ahead and wrote a book of word searches and puzzles based on the President-elect and his family.

The Rev. Eugene Williams Sr., of Clinton has self-published “Words, Cross & Across: Word Searches on Barack Obama” inspired by Obama’s rhetoric and his family.

The 67-year-old author said that he got struck by the idea for the book last year when his 10th-, 11th- and 12th-grade English students at Annapolis Road Academy, in Bladensburg, failed to understand many of the words in Obama”s book “The Audacity of Hope” and Martin Luther King”s “I Have a Dream” speech.

“I see it as a family-oriented book. It”s a good way to bring families together and learn new words,” The Washington Times quoted Williams as saying.

He further said that he designed the searches and charts with word meanings and usage components so that students could also learn definitions.

In fact, a large number of his words were taken from the SAT prep class he taught, but not all the words are so complex.

In fact, he deliberately used words such as “father,” “nice” and “bank” to balance out “elucidate,” “puissant,” and “gregarious,” thus making it possible for even younger children to learn from the book.

“We want parents to sit down with children as young as 2- or 3-years-old,” said Williams.

For writing the 156-page book, Williams even made it a point to watch the president-elect on the Web site YouTube, to help him make better associations with Obama”s word choices.

“I teach words by association,” said Williams.

The book will be available at Local bookstores, Amazon.com and his Web site, www.academicresourcesunlimited.org, and the proceeds from its sales will go to Academic Resources Unlimited Inc., a nonprofit group created by Williams.

“People are buying everything about Barack Obama,” said Williams.

After the release, he sent two copies of “Words” to the Obama campaign office in Chicago – one for the President-elect and another for his wife, Michelle.

Williams said he knew the Obamas would appreciate his book because they shared the same philosophy on education.

“With an educated populace, we have a better society,” said Williams. (ANI)

BBC denies new Doctor Who Matt Smith knew about betting

London, Jan 6 (ANI): The BBC has denied new Doctor Who Matt Smith had any knowledge about the betting that took place over the identity of the 11th Doctor.

A wager had been waged on Smith, 26, at odds of up to 80-1, and when he landed the role unexpectedly, he was dragged into a betting scandal after bookies, who stood to lose tens of thousands of pounds, said the wagers had been placed after the BBC told the new Doctor he had gotten the role.

Most of the bets were placed in Northamptonshire, the county Smith grew up in, but a BBC spokeswoman has denied that he or anyone he knew was involved in the betting.

“The BBC has no knowledge of anyone betting on the outcome of the identity of the 11th Doctor,” the Daily Star quoted her as saying.

It appears that several people at the Corporation were “in the know” about the appointment, and that Smith had been told he had the part shortly before Christmas.

But the BBC refused to confirm exactly how many people knew about the appointment.

Paddy Power spokesman Darren Haines said that they took 40,000 pounds in bets on Smith and his rivals.

“The vast majority of these bets were placed in Northamptonshire. What can I say – it’s not normally a hotbed for this kind of betting. It seems somebody knew something,” he said.

“But good luck to those involved. That’s what gambling is all about – having an edge. I’m just upset I wasn’t on it,” he added.

Last night a Northamptonshire police spokesman said that the force would investigate any complaints of insider gambling in conjunction with the Gambling Commission.

If found guilty they and anyone who dishonestly tipped them off face two years in jail and a fine.

However, Betfair confirmed they knew the person who requested Smith be added to their market and everyone who bet on him, and said that they would fully co-operate with any inquiry.

“Betfair knows the identity of everyone who places a bet on the site and we are positioned to monitor all of our markets,” Betfair’s spokesman Tony Calvin said. (ANI)

Matt Smith is the new ‘Doctor Who’

London, Jan 4 (ANI): Actor Matt Smith will be the 11th ‘Doctor Who’ – and the youngest actor ever to play the cult television time traveller.

The 26-year-old’s name was unveiled by BBC bosses in a special one-off show.

Smith will be taking over from David Tennant, 37, and is due to first appear on screens as the revered doctor in 2010.

He becomes the 11th Time Lord since the programme first aired in 1963.

“I”ve got this wonderful journey in front of me where I”ve got these six months to build this Time Lord – and that”s such an exciting prospect,” The Sun quoted him, as saying.

And current star David Tennant will be on hand to guide him.

Matt added: “I have been warned about what to expect and I think David is going to be a good source of information for that as well.”

The previous doctors are William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann and Christopher Eccleston.

Retiring star David added: “I’m proud to be one of 11.” (ANI)

New Delhi, Jan 2 (ANI): The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA)  today approved the implementation of a centrally sponsored scheme to universalise access to and improve quality of education at secondary stage, called Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) during the 11th Five Year Plan.
