Stars, listeners bridge gap as music booms in India

The booming music industry is bridging the gap between Indian fans and international stars as the business of music moves to the interactive digital space and more stars perform live in the country.

The cornerstone of the new big-ticket Indian music is its global face.

This month drew two of the biggest names of international music – Lady Gaga and Metallica – to India while Oct 31-Nov 15 is crowded with several international names who will perform at the Delhi International Arts Festival.

The festival is hosting nearly 2,000 performers. The Jazz ensemble Paul Beaudry and Pathways will perform in Delhi Nov 1.

“India is a big English speaking market. If a recording label has to push the envelope in this market, it has to bring more artists (musicians) to perform in India,” Sony Music India marketing director Sanujeet Bhujabal told IANS.

He said “several global venues and property with performance space have come up for the Formula One races”.

“India also has the IPL (Indian Premier League) which is also likely to draw a lot of international stars to India in the future,” the official said.

He said “English music contributes to nearly seven percent of the music business globally”.

Universal Music India, Lady Gaga’s recording label, said the “exploding entertainment economy of India is drawing top billboard musicians to India – and selling out concerts”.

“I think India is kind of a strong country globally. It cannot be ignored any more. It has a huge economy and the consumption of music has increased,” Universal Music-India vice president Sunil D’sa said.

It has created more awareness about India and its culture abroad and opened up two-way exchanges, he said.

The government in the last few years has become more proactive in using culture as a people-to-people contact between nations for better bilateral ties. There has also been an increase in government-sponsored international music festivals in India.

A public-private partnership policy to promote culture in the country has seen the government lend its name to several institutions to present international stars in India, a source in the culture ministry said.

The internationalisation of music has also been prompted by a change in the format of consumption pattern.

Sunil D’sa said: “Music has moved to digital platforms. It is on mobile phone caller tunes, ring tones, iPhones and iPads.

“Universal Music has set up a separate cell for digital music to cash in on the space,” he added.

Universal Music has also made inroads into the regional market in Maharashtra, Punjab and Bengal to promote local talent, he said.

Young fans in India now keep in touch with their favourite musicians on Facebook, Twitter and a number of other social networking websites – some promoted by the recording labels and musicians themselves.

“The size of the youth population is spurring the growth of music industry and related entertainment,” D’Sa said.

On Friday, a foyer at Hotel Taj Mansingh in the capital bustled with fans and media, who were waiting for a brush with pop icon Lady Gaga, in India to perform at a Formula 1 (F-1) after-party.

The musician met some fans, the winners of a Meet Lady Gaga contest sponsored by a leading media house – and was “amazed by India and its people”. The tickets for Lady Gaga’s debut concert Sunday priced Rs.40,000 have been sold out.

Her new album, “Born This Way”, has connected to India with two Bollywood remixes of her tracks.

Sony Music this month launched famous jazz ensemble Spyro Gyra’s new fusion album featuring a Hindi track.

The band said the album was its gateway to Indian and Hindi music – and new segments of audience.

Bhujabal said: “Indian listeners will also look for richer music on digital platforms when Sony Music and Universal Music Worldwide launch Vevo, a premium online music video platform, a year later.”

According to industry insiders the three-day F-1 race which began Friday had pulled several invisible walls down in the entertainment scene because of its youth appeal.

“The race is known for their after-parties where music is central to entertainment. An after-party for the F-1 is hosting Lady Gaga and several international DJs,” a Delhi-based event manager said.

Liquor companies have added glamour to live music-related entertainment in the last decade by sponsoring several annual rock concerts and international performers in India.

Novel theme makes ’7aam Arivu’ a good watch (Tamil Movie Review)

Film: “7aam Arivu” (Seventh Sense); Cast: Surya, Shruthi Haasan, Johnny Tri Nguyen, and Ramanathan; Producer: Red Giant Movies; Director: A.R. Murugadoos; Cinematographer: Ravi K. Chandran; Stunt: Peter Hein; Music Composer: Harris Jayaraj; Rating: ***

“7aam Arivu” has dared to tread on a different path by talking about rejuvenating the “past glory” by reactivating DNA of one’s forefathers. It also talks about bio-war waged by a neighbouring country.

The movie begins with a well-made documentary on Pallava prince, Bodhi Dharman (Suriya), who lived in 500 BC. He travelled to China and took shelter in a hamlet. His excellence in medical science and martial arts save the villagers from various dangers and they fall at his feet and become his students. He teaches them Tamil medicine and martial arts. After his demise, his teachings spread all over China and its people adore him as Tao.

Cut to the present, Aravindh (Suriya), a circus artiste meets Suba Sreenivasan (Shruti Haasan), who visits the arena in search of a monkey for her research work. Aravindh, who instantly falls for Suba, volunteers to help her. Slowly they come close to each other and Aravindh’s love for Suba gets thickened.

Meanwhile, Operation Red, a conspiracy against India, is planted in China. It is a cruel bio-war that could cause the loss of millions of lives.

Dong Lee (Johnny Tri Nguyen), a martial arts and hypnotist expert, is deputed for the job. The one man army lands in India to spread a decease that doesn’t have any vaccine or medicine. He has another important job on hand. He has to kill Suba, whose research on Bodhi Dharman could spoil their plans.

Aravindh gets a shock when he learns that Suba’s closeness towards him is not out of love and neither is she looking for a monkey – she actually wants to do experiments on him!

Dejected Arvindh is not ready to hear Suba’s side of story — Suba’s research revealed that Bodhi Dharman was Aravindh’s forefather and that their DNAs match. She wants to activate Bodhi’s DNA in Aravindh to recreate powers of the Pallava prince. If she could successfully make Aravindh inherit those powers, he would be able to thwart Operation Red.

Whether she is able to convince him forms the rest of the story.

No doubt Murugadoss has brought in a different theme to the cliché ridden Tamil cinema. He has done it with proper homework. He has executed the narrative well — be it depiction of olden days or martial arts.

The concept of activating forefather’s DNA in one’s body is interesting. He has given us a visual treat with the help of cinematographer Ravi K. Chandran and art director Rajeevan.

Peter Hein has added value with his awesome stunt choreography – the climax fight is outstanding.

The problem with the movie is the flat narrative, which lacks curiosity element. Murugadoss’ hard work gets diluted since he reveals everything in the first hour.

The rest of the movie, quite predictable scene by scene, mars the impact of the film.

But Murugadoss chose a right actor in Johnny Tri (Vietnamese actor well-versed in martial arts) to don the role. Johnny makes an astonishing impact with his body language and powerful eyes.

But Murugadoss has relied too much on his hypnotist skills that it looks like a comedy after a point. Villain’s effort to kill Suba and Aravindh in a busy Chennai street falls flat because of the unconvincing hypnotist angle.

The politically inclined dialogues do not fit into the narrative though they trigger applauds from the audiences. Linking the just concluded war in Sri Lanka and the “conspiracy” by China defies all reasoning and ends up being rhetoric.

Murugadoss, who has given some lovely song sequences in “Ghajini”, has gone wrong in placing songs here – songs serve as brief intervals. Harris Jeyaraj’s songs resemble some old hits. His background score is impressive in many places including the climax.

Surya’s commitment and hard work is visible in each and every frame. His portrayal of Bodhi Dharman is quite credible while his performance in the climax is outstanding.

Good looking Shruti gets a heavy role and manages to pass muster.

“7aam Arivu” is the case of good story marred by flat narrative.

Is Kalki pregnant?

These days the entire happily wed gang of heroines are under the scanner. Following actor Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan's pregnancy, every other married heroine is said to be in the family way, including Shilpa Shetty and Lara Dutta. The latest actor rumoured to be preggers is actor Kalki Koechlin.

Though the promotions for her films are on in full swing, Kalki has been taking it easy due to her health. But her sporadic appearances at the promotions have added grist to the rumour mills. Tongues are wagging about the actor being pregnant.

Says a source, “While her co-stars in the upcoming movie — Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Katrina Kaif — embarked on a road trip, Kalki was

there only on Day 1 and that too, to see them off. In fact, she was puking that day, which may have sparked off the rumours of her being pregnant. Anyway, this is not the first time since her marriage to director Anurag Kashyap that there is a buzz about Kalki being preggers.”

Sources close to the actor have refuted any such development. “Kalki is not pregnant. She is unwell due to acute stomach infection. It is monsoon and people tend to take ill. At present, Kalki is just a few films old and is an ambitious actor. So like her counterparts, she will first want to focus on career before planning for a baby,” said the source.

Seems like this is one issue that will require a really convincing reply. So, what's the truth Kalki?!

Age no hurdle, job must be done: Amitabh Bachchan

JAIPUR: After a hectic trip to the Ajmer dargah, Amitabh Bachchan came to the city where he met scribes at a press conference. The Big Man of the film industry spoke to TOI. Excerpts:

Many critics believe that the film Bbuddah Hoga Terra Baap has a slow first half and a well-edited second half? Do you think some more sequences and scenes could have been incorporated to make it an wholesome and interesting film?

I don’t think so. People have their own opinions and suggestions. I had seen the film not as the actor, but as a cinegoer at a theatre after a long time in Hyderabad. Let me tell you, I liked the film in totality and I was actually entertained by the talented director Puri Jagannadh’s project.
Did you experience any pain, lethargy while shooting for the film especially in the fight sequences, since you are almost 70?

When I have been assigned a job, I can’t shy away from it because of my age. I gave my best to ensure that all scenes especially the fight ones looked real. I did not experience any pain and let me tell you that I accomplished the job well within the stipulated deadline.

Given a choice, will you act with your grandchildren?

It depends on whether they would want to act. It also depends on the script and the role I am offered. I would be thrilled to share the screen space with them.

You have been a successful blogger. People have liked your writing style. Since there’s a dearth of good scriptwriters, would you like to try in this domain?

I personally believe that writing in Hindi cinema needs improvement. I don’t think scriptwriting is my cup of tea. Mujhey Kahan likhna aata hai bhai saab.

Filmmakers are coming up with projects which have a social message. What is your take on corruption and the quota issue?

I think corruption and reservation are becoming major problems. I am doing a Prakash Jha film Aarakshan. I think filmmakers should definitely come up with more films and ideas depicting social messages.

Sex is Cameron Diaz’s favourite sport!

Cameron Diaz has revealed that sex is her favourite sport and also said that she was always in the mood for sex.

“Sex is the sexiest word in the English language. Just the word is sexy to me. There”s something to it, don”t you think? Sex is my favourite sport,” Contactmusic quoted her as telling the News of the World newspaper.

“What”s the quickest way to get me in the mood? I”m always in the mood,” she added.

The 38-year-old star, who recently split with baseball star Alex Rodriguez, also admitted she is in no rush to get married, and would rather make her ‘own rules’.

“I don”t think we should live our lives in relationships based off old traditions that don”t suit our world any longer. I think a lot of people are married to people that they”re not romantic with anymore,” she said.

“We have to make our own rules. I just didn”t ever marry anybody that I then had to get divorced from. We break up. We move on,” she added.

Bond of life: 007 ties knot

LONDON: British actors Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz have married, a US representative for Craig said on Sunday.

“They are married,” said an LA spokesman for the 43-year-old actor, best known for playing superspy James Bond in the film franchise. He provided no more details.

People magazine said the couple, who were first cited as a couple last autumn, married in a quiet ceremony in New York on Wednesday.

Weisz, 41, won an Oscar for her role in ” The Constant Gardener” and starred in ” The Mummy.” The newlyweds play husband and wife in the upcoming “Dream House” , due out in the US in September. The British actors had been quietly dating. The wedding previously was reported by the British newspaper News of the World.

Craig is the latest James Bond and will star in “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” He entered the international spotlight when he starred in “Casino Royale” and ” Quantum of Solace” as James Bond.

The James Bond star, who was married to actress Fiona Loudon for two years (from 1992-94 ), has a 19-year-old daughter, Ella. Craig was also involved with Satsuki Mitchell, before calling it quits in early 2010. Weisz, 41, who split from ‘Black Swan’ director Darren Aronofsky last November, has a five-year-old son Henry

The eyes of more than Texas are upon Rick Perry

CNN hosts the first New Hampshire Republican presidential debate on Monday from Manchester at 8 p.m. ET. Follow all the issues and campaign news leading up to the debate on CNNPolitics.com and @cnnpolitics on Twitter.

Washington (CNN) — The stars have aligned for Rick Perry to enter the 2012 presidential race.

Now all eyes turn to Austin, as Republicans wonder whether the swaggering Texas governor will actually take the plunge.

Perry, the longest-serving governor in Texas history, boasts a national profile among Republicans and Tea Party activists, a network of deep-pocketed donors and a track record of creating jobs in the midst of a recession.

The implosion of Newt Gingrich’s presidential campaign on Thursday — an upheaval that saw the former House speaker’s entire senior staff abandon what critics saw as a sinking ship — left two of Perry’s closest advisers, David Carney and Rob Johnson, without a candidate.

The sudden availability of his top advisers combined with the unsettled nature of the Republican presidential field has left the door wide open for Perry to step onto the national stage.

“Why wouldn’t he run?” asked Mark McKinnon, a former George W. Bush adviser and longtime Perry observer. “One of the only things holding him back was two key members of his team were with Gingrich. And now that’s no longer a problem.”

McKinnon said, “There’s a huge gap in the Republican field right now, and as a former six-man football player, Rick Perry knows how to run to the hole.”

While Perry has long been the subject of presidential buzz, the speculation began anew last month when he told reporters at a bill signing in May that he would “think about” running after the state concludes its legislative business.

The regular session ended last month, but Perry convened a special 30-day session to deal with budget matters and immigration legislation that won’t finish until the end of this month.

Meanwhile, Perry and his political team have been flooded with messages of encouragement in recent weeks, a deluge that’s only picked up in the wake of the Gingrich spectacle.

Multiple legislators in the pivotal early primary state of South Carolina recently reached out to Perry and asked him to consider running, CNN has learned.

And after repeated efforts to contact Perry’s team, a leading Tea Party activist in Iowa said he was finally able to get through to a political adviser on Friday to talk about a potential visit to the first-in-the-nation caucus state.

Ryan Rhodes, the chairman of the Iowa Tea Party, said he spoke with one of Perry’s aides about the possibility of joining up with an 18-day statewide bus tour he is organizing. Five GOP presidential candidates are scheduled to appear at stops along the tour.

“I was assured that they appreciate any offers to come to Iowa, but they said the governor is in the same place in his decision as he was before,” Rhodes said of his conversation. “They said he won’t make a decision until the session is done.”

That message is consistent with what Perry’s office has been saying publicly — that any decision about the presidential race will come only after Perry takes care of official state business.

“He is thinking about it, but he is thinking about a lot of issues,” said Mark Miner, the governor’s communications director.

Miner brushed aside the White House buzz but said it’s understandable that Republicans would want Perry to run, because Texas, with its business-friendly climate, has weathered the recession better than most states.

“He is conservative, fiscally responsible governor that has a successful record,” he told CNN. “There is always going to be talk about he running for higher office because of success he has had.”

Despite the denials coming out of the governor’s office, veteran political observers in Texas have detected an unmistakable change in Perry’s tone about the race, stoking further speculation about his plans.

For years, Perry would act “exasperated” when asked about his White House ambitions, according to Jason Embry, the capitol bureau chief for the Austin American-Statesman.

Not anymore.

“When team started saying he had no intention of running, instead of saying that he was not running, it was an important pivot that none of us took lightly,” Embry told CNN. “And then he started saying he was focused on the legislative session, which was a far less strident denial than he had given in the past. And then, of course, in late May he said he was going to think about it. So there has clearly been an evolution.”

Perry-watchers say not to expect an announcement anytime soon. The governor would presumably have to huddle with his advisers and donors to plot out a campaign strategy.

But senior Democrats are at least taking the prospect of a Perry campaign seriously.

“I think absolutely there is a path to victory for him on the Republican side,” said one Democratic strategist familiar with the Obama campaign’s thinking.

The strategist predicted that Perry could appeal to social conservatives and Tea Party activists in Iowa and South Carolina but might face problems in New Hampshire.

If Perry manages to win the nomination, the strategist said, he would be haunted by his infamous 2009 suggestion that Texas might secede from the United States in the face of federal overreach.

“It would certainly be an interesting campaign, running against somebody who is running for president of the United States who had previously said he’d consider seceding from it,” the Democrat said.

Long live ‘The Man Who Would Be King’

“THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING”

Blu-ray widescreen, 1975, PG, mild violence

Best extra: There’s just one – “Call It Magic: The Making of ‘The Man Who Would Be King’ “

IN THE VINTAGE feature “Call It Magic,” director John Huston says it took him 20 years to get Rudyard Kipling’s story made. The roles of Danny Dravot and Peachy Carnehan, he adds, were intended for Clark Gable and Humphrey Bogart.

No knock, but it’s hard to see them in place of Sean Connery and Michael Caine. In fact, it’s hard to see anyone else in this swashbuckling epic. Connery and Caine embody Danny and Peachy, roguish ex-soldiers in late-1880s British India who hatch a scheme: They’ll go to remote Kafiristan, train an army, set up a king, usurp him, then, Peachy says, rob the place “four ways from Sunday.” Privy to their plan is Kipling himself, played by Christopher Plummer.

Danny and Peachy almost pull it off, too – until hubris and delusion knock Danny from his throne. In the feature, producer John Foreman says “King” is a celebration of the human spirit, the pitfalls to which it is subject and the glories that are possible. Indeed it is. It’s also an indelible portrait of friendship and a rip-roaring adventure.

The film gets a considerable boost in high-def. Detail, for the most part, is spot-on; it softens a little when the camera pulls away, but that’s typical of movies made in the 1970s. The color, though, is exceptional – super-saturated but authentic. Huston went to Morocco to shoot in its markets and mountains, and every frame just bristles. If you caught “Zulu” when it came out on Blu-ray a few years ago (and if you didn’t, you should), it’s the same deal. The sense of place is real.

The audio isn’t as dynamic. Again, chalk it up to the vintage. The center speaker gets most of the action; dialogue, however, is distinct and the soundtrack is never tinny.

It would’ve been nice to get some new extras – interviews with Connery and Caine, maybe a feature about Huston, Kipling or India under British rule. But you can’t have everything, right? “The Man Who Would Be King” will do nicely.

Lovers Who Wander

Dion and the Belmonts was a leading American vocal group of the late 1950s. The group formed when Dion DiMucci joined The Belmonts – Carlo Mastrangelo, Freddie Milano, and Angelo D’Aleo – in late 1957.

Dion And The Belmonts – Lovers Who Wander lyrics

When she kissed me I was born and she said goodbye
And I knew right away I was born to cry
Now I’m happy and the joke’s on her
Cause I found that place for lover’s who wander

She took my love, said she’s not comin back
So my world and my sky was all turnin black
Now I see the light, I’m wise to her
Cause I found that place for lovers who wander

A walkin around thinkin about her
Never thought I could live without her
She broke my heart, I really showed it
Look at me now, you’d never know it

Now my story can be told with a smiling face
I’m the luckiest guy in the human race
My dreams have gone for her
Cause I found that place for lover’s who wander

Wo wo wo yeah, she took my love you see
Yeah, she doesn’t bother me
Yeah I found that place to be
Yeah, ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Yeah walkin around thinkin about her
I never thought I could live without her
She broke my heart, I really showed it
Look at me now, you’d never know it

Now my story can be told with a smiling face
I’m the luckiest guy in the human race
All my lovin dreams have gone for her
Cause I found that place for lover’s who wander

Dum dum did it, dum dum did it…

Lonely Teenager

Dion and the Belmonts was a leading American vocal group of the late 1950s. The group formed when Dion DiMucci joined The Belmonts – Carlo Mastrangelo, Freddie Milano, and Angelo D’Aleo – in late 1957.

Dion And The Belmonts – Lonely Teenager lyrics

I wanna go home where I belong
‘Cause now I’m just a lonely teenager

When I was sixteen, ran away all alone on a stray
What can I do, what can I say
I’m a lonely teenager

Now I’m seventeen, still alone
Wondering if I should go home
Or maybe stay out of my own
I’m a lonely teenager

I’d love to go back home where I belong
I know I’ll be alright
If I just stay out of sight

I wanna go home where I belong
‘Cause now I’m just a lonely teenager

I’d love to go back home where I belong
I know I’ll be alright
If I stay out of sight

I wanna go home where I belong
‘Cause now I’m just a lonely teenager, lonely teenager

Abraham, Martin And John ! Lyrics

“Abraham, Martin & John” is a 1968 song written by Dick Holler and first recorded by Dion. It is a tribute to the memories of icons of social change, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Jr., John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy. It was written as a response to the assassinations of King and the younger Kennedy in April and June 1968.

Anybody Seen My Old Friend Abraham, Martin And John ! Lyrics :

Has anybody here seen my old friend Abraham?
Can you tell me where he’s gone?
He freed a lot of people,
But it seems the good they die young.
You know, I just looked around and he’s gone.

Anybody here seen my old friend John?
Can you tell me where he’s gone?
He freed a lot of people,
But it seems the good they die young.
I just looked around and he’s gone.

Anybody here seen my old friend Martin?
Can you tell me where he’s gone?
He freed a lot of people,
But it seems the good they die young.
I just looked ’round and he’s gone.

Didn’t you love the things that they stood for?
Didn’t they try to find some good for you and me?
And we’ll be free
Some day soon, and it’s a-gonna be one day …

Anybody here seen my old friend Bobby?
Can you tell me where he’s gone?
I thought I saw him walk up over the hill,
With Abraham, Martin and John.
